Atlanta Hawks: Raptors 102, Hawks 86

  • This was a throwback game for the Hawks, harkening to their bygone days of ugliness. Just like old times–by which of course I mean last season–you had a lifeless loss, aggravated fans and Joe Johnson calling out teammates without naming names.
  • “I think some of us was ready, and some of us wasn’t,” he said. “It just kind of gave a bad effect on the whole team. But give Toronto credit. They were better than us tonight. If we come out and start like that tomorrow, they’ll be better than us [again].”
  • Not sure who Joe was talking about or if he included himself (seven points on 12 shots) among those not ready. Really, it could be anyone outside of Ivan Johnson and Josh Smith. No one else on Atlanta’s roster provided much evidence that they expected to actually have to play to beat the Raptors, who really do deserve credit for taking it to the Hawks.
  • “Our season has been up and down but we’re not going to lay down,” James Johnson said. “We still have pride, we’re still men, and this is our job.”
  • Larry Drew echoed Joe’s concerns while naming a name: “Early, I know Jeff Teague seemed very passive. His energy level wasn’t very good. I put [Jannero] Pargo in earlier than usual just to try to muster up some energy. Not taking anything from Toronto, I thought they played hard. We told our guys that’s not a team that has rolled over. The played extremely hard against Boston.”
  • Joe’s gripes didn’t end with who was or wasn’t ready. Asked about the stagnant offense, he said: “It’s been like that for quite some time. I don’t feel like we take advantage of mismatches for whatever reason. It’s frustrating because of where we are at this point in the season.”
  • That’s also the reason this is such a bad loss. It’s been a while since the Hawks turned in such a listless performance, and it would be easier to chalk it up as a bad night if the Hawks weren’t playing for home court. Then again, it’s doubtful many of the fans at the game tonight were inspired to run out and get their playoff tickets.
  • “I don’t think this is a game you put our of your mind,” Willie Green said. “I think this is a game we need to think about. We’re supposed to be getting ready for a playoff run. It was a letdown on our part.”
  • Actually, come to think of it, this would be a bad L even if the Hawks didn’t have something to play for. That’s always going to be the case when Ben Uzoh, Alan Anderson and Justin Dentmon outplay Teague, Joe, Kirk Hinrich and whichever-bench-guards-were-in-there.
  • I’m not sure which was the worst sequence. Was it Josh throwing away the inbound pass just before halftime, leading to Uzoh’s score right after DeMar DeRozan had flipped in an uncontested jumper? Or maybe it was Josh taking a seat and Joe failing to check in, leaving the Hawks with four players on the floor as play started?
  • I’m going with those two Pargo airballs in the fourth quarter because, if you can’t even count on Pargo Time, what else is there?
  • I’m thinking Dwane Casey played a good amount of zone with the hope that the Hawks, especially Josh, would settle for Js. It worked. “You can’t win a championship with it, but it’s a good thing to have in our back pocket,” Casey said.
  • Ivan (14 points on 9 shots, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals) was really the only guy to match Toronto’s effort and pace for the entire game. He needed help.
  • Jason Collins started. He lasted less than six minutes. It seemed as if Drew had finally given up on playing Collins in anything but a very narrow role, but this wasn’t it.
  • Drew says he likes to start Hinrich because he adds defensive tenacity to the lineup. It’s true that Kirk plays with spunk but he’s just not the defender he was even last season, and I’m not saying that just because he struggled with a tough matchup tonight.
  • Green stayed behind in Atlanta as his wife prepares to have a baby.
  • Michael Cunningham, Hawks beat

Only two things I got out of the game tonite:

1) Hawks are already resting for the playoffs – just like last season

2) Casey should currently be our Head Coach.

“Mitch Lawrence of the Daily News reports the Hawks have offered Rick Sund a “deal to stay” but he told the team’s owners he will decide after the season if he wants to continue as GM. Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. has said any contract talks for Sund would happen after the season.” – Michael Cunningham

1. Hawks’ mgmt. overpays Joe Johnson by initially offering him [J. Johnson] a maximum [contract] deal thereby eliminating any [back-and-forth] negotiations.

2. Hawks’ mgmt. doesn’t re-sign Jamal Crawford, the Hawks’ best “pure” scorer and MVP of the first round of the playoffs last year and let Jamal Crawford walk for nothing [in return].

3. Hawks’ mgmt. agrees to extend Marvin Williams’ contract which clearly overpays him [M. Williams] based on his services, contribution and performance.

4. Hawks mgmt. trade a 2010 first round [small forward] pick for another 2010 first round [shooting guard - Jordan Crawford] pick. The traded-for first round pick [Jordan Crawford] was traded for oft[en] injured Kirk Hinrich.

5. Hawks’ mgmt. signed Mike Bibby to a contraction extension which overpaid him [Bibby] for his services and performance.

6. Hawks’ mgmt. signed Vladimir Radmanovic, Jerry Stackhouse, [an improperly and under-utilized] Tracy McGrady and Erick Dampier.

7. Hawks’ mgmt. signs and retains Jason Collins.

8. Hawks’ mgmt. last year signed or traded for Josh Powell, Hilton Armstrong, Etan Thomas and Pape Sy.

9. Hawks’ mgmt. overpays Zaza Pachulia on a contract extension.

10. Hawks’ mgmt. doesn’t re-sign or offer a contract extension to Mike Woodson who under his tenure as head coach helped the Hawks improve its win-loss record for six consecutive years.

11. Hawks’ management’s excuse for not re-signing Mike Woodson is “we [the Atlanta Hawks franchise] want to go in another direction” and “it’s probably time for him [Woodson] to have his voice heard by someone else,” however, Hawks mgmt. replaces Coach Woodson with his first and long-time assistant, Larry Drew – so much for the Hawks going in another direction. It seems like “the same ol’ soup, just re-heated.” – Ken[ny] Red from the documentary “American Pimp” “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpH-BxiMWtM”

And “the Hawks have offered Rick Sund a deal “to stay”" and will let him [Sund] decide whether or not he wants to return? [smh]

That was awful. I really think the Celtics could beat the Hawks with one arm tied behind their backs. That first round series will be ugly.

Have to laugh at Joe Johnson calling out anyone. Alan Anderson (Go Spartans!) took Joe’s lunch tonight. Josh and Ivan were the only guys who bothered to show up.

Defense was terrible. Rebounding was even worse. This team sucks.

Again Joe Johnson points fingers instead of taking responsibility. Your the leader of the team and you only put up 7 points. Where is the accountability?

Again LD starts talking bad about Teague instead of calling out his captains and even himself. Some blame rests on the players but the other half is bad coaching. Where is the accountability?

Clyde, Teague was terrible tonight. Played soft and gave little effort. There were two occasions where Teague just stood and watched while loose balls were recovered by the Raptors. If Teague is going to play that halfa$$ed, he should be called out. Drew was right to do so.

Can Arthur Blank buy these Hawks already?

Did Teague and Joe Johnson go to the club last night? They played like they has ZERO sleep.

Also, I’m very disappointed in Joe’s comments. He was the main reason why they lost tonight. I lost all respect I had for him. Ivan Johnson is the only guy on that team with heart. Josh does too, but has no freaking brain.

LOL . . JJ is tripping with those comments. You can’t start out a game 1 – 8 FG and end up 2 – 12, and then say that “some of us were ready, and some weren’t”. We all know ONE PERSON who wasn’t ready.

Last name: JOHNSON . . . First name: JOE

Of course you can add Teague, Hinrich, and whomever else to that list, but it all starts with you homie. This loss, in the end, won’t turn out to be much of a big deal, because we’re probably not catching the Pacers anyway. So if you’re mailing it in like you did in the final few games of the season last year, go ahead and tell coach so that he can limit your minutes to 20 a game.

Props to Josh and especially to Ivan tonight for showing up.

Redeem yourself tomorrow, if you feel like playing.

And stop going to Magic City, or Compound, or wherever you and the wifey like to go on a Saturday night, if you got a game on Sunday evening. I knew your head wasn’t in the game when you got within 6 feet of the rim, but instead of shooting it, you passed it to Josh ( who was open ) for a 22 footer.

This loss is on you Mr. Johnson. No big deal. Just get it out of your system by the time the playoffs come. And seriously, if you’re not 100%, tell Coach Drew, so he can limit your minutes. Otherwise, stop deflecting blame to others, when you play like a backup 2-guard for Kennesaw State.

I think he may have called out Marvin once. But he’s never called out JJ. Ever.

Maybe he’s highly critical of Teague seeing that Drew used to be a PG. But still. When the leader of your squad played like he did tonight, why even waste “energy” calling out other people? When JJ usually has a bad night offensively, he usually tries to shut his man down defensively. That didn’t happen tonight.

For all the credibility LD may have built up navigating this team
through a compressed season w/o Al Horford;
he is leaking air, leaking gas, and leaking oil, plus smoke is coming

I feel that he will not complete the season with any bailable plaudits

As our team moves forward [next season] … I cannot foresee
Joe -or- Josh being on the team [together].

My reasoning;

They have never meshed as teammates.
I have asked MC point blank ‘`do they like one another ?`’
to which he has responded; ‘`they seem to get along`’ [paraphrase].

Still the two of them together have never developed a chemistry.
-undeniable-

Herein lies the rub:
Josh & his contact / Joe ditto.

Josh appears to mesh very well with Al.
Josh, on the other hand, has this contract thingy … plus,
he is at an all-time High for Trade-Value.

Joe; … tonite`s quote was disturbing.
I`m not exactly sure what to do with him … But ……………
section 303 nailed it down pretty good.
I`ll explain:
*Joe used to score
*Joe used to defend
*Joe used to shoot from long range
*Joe used to be able to get into the lane
**** There`s your problem – Joe *’`used to`’* !
Tonite Joe was abused on defense.
I mean ABUSED.
Numerous occasions, Joe would be giving effort,
only to have his man lose him and shoot an uncontested lay-up.
(MC talks about Kirk can`t guard like he once could) durn (neither can Joe)
On offense -Now- it does not take an elite defender to shut Joe down.
Just a hungry kid that works hard.

Solution(s):
1, Amnesty Joe – There is no denying it.
Joe is why the amnesty clause was re-invented, in the 2nd place.
2. Trade Josh:
* Now – before the 2012 draft for picks and a player.
-or-
3. Keep Josh – and build around he and Al + Zaza.
* Teaguer [the jury is still out]
* I still think Jeff is more Barbosa
* Therfore we still need a pg:
** sign Nash … or … draft Kendall Marshall … one or t`other
