Atlanta Hawks: Ivan Johnson ‘back to full status’

If you are wondering if things are all good as far as Ivan Johnson is concerned, consider the scene at the end of Hawks practice today.

“Hey, Ivan, did I shoot you out?” Larry Drew called out.

“I let you win,” Ivan responded.

Drew schooled Ivan in a game of H-O-R-S-E before practice, then afterwards said there would be no more discipline for the rookie’s verbal altercation with teammates during the Celtics game.

“He’s back to full status,” Drew said. “He came in and gave me a big hug this morning. I brought him in this morning and shot him out before we got started. He’s back on board.”

I know this is the kind of thing that inspires conspiracy theories among those who like to fashion the facts to fit their preferred narrative about Drew’s relationship with players. But there’s no evidence there will be any lingering fallout from this. Heck, Drew kept playing Josh Powell after he suspended him last season, and it’s not like Powell was giving the Hawks much.

Also remember that Drew played Tracy McGrady 22 minutes the very next game after he publicly complained about his playing time and 15 minutes in the game after that. McGrady’s subsequent reduced role was about his declining production and withdrawn demeanor, not his gripes. McGrady has been noticeably more engaged lately and, what do you know, he’s getting more time (and playing better).

Ivan said he’s ready to move on.

“It’s things I’ve got to learn in the league, how to channel my anger,” he said. “It’s still going good, it’s just the heat of the moment, man. I’m so competitive in a game that you want to win, you don’t want no mistakes to happen.”

Notes

  • Zaza Pachulia (foot) was ruled out for the next two games, both against the Raptors. Drew wasn’t sure Zaza’s status when I talked to him so he didn’t say which lineup he would use against the Raps.
  • Josh Smith (ankle) and Joe Johnson (rest) got treatment today. Both are expected to play against the Raps. “At this point it is more about maintenance than getting the work in,” Drew said. “We want to approach this last week-and-a-half as sort of a maintenance-type deal for our starters.”
  • It turns out the Hawks won’t clinch a playoff spot if the Bucks lose to Indiana tonight.
  • The Celtics helped out the Hawks by losing to the Raps last night (even though the Raps did their best to give back the W at the end). Atlanta is one game ahead of Boston for homecourt in a 4/5 series. The Celtics would win the tiebreaker.
  • Surely Toronto’s W over Boston got Atlanta’s attention. “We are playing a team that is in position to play a spoiler,” Drew said. “As I told the guys, every game is a playoff game. That’s got to be our mindset. We can’t take any team lightly. Our focus is, ‘A,’ we want to finish strong, and ‘B,’ we want to be playing our best basketball.”
  • The Magic are in trouble. Dwight Howard is out indefinitely with a herniated disk. I’m still struggling with a bulging lumbar disk more than six months later. Dwight is a world-class athlete who will get 24/7 treatment but, other than that, it’s the exact same situation.

Good thing about quick tempers is that dissapate just as quickly. As long as those toward whom the anger is directed are able to let it go just as quickly.

I think, after watch this play out, that Drew handled this incident – whatever it was – very well. Now Ivan better be ready to respond in the increased role for the next two games

Sorry to hear about your back. I am sure your condition is better than Marvin’s (even when he’s healthy) – no homo.

Wish we could get more info on what Ivan said/did.

Toronto beat Boston but we can’t.
NJN beat Philly [in Philly] but we can’t.

That’s 0-5 vs. those two teams. And we are 2 GB of 3 seed

Michael I am getting tired of you APOLOGIZING and MAKING EXCUSES for our PATHETIC COACH. It seems as if you are taking a shot at us fans/bloggers. You know this DUMB, LACKLUSTER COACH WHO WE HAVE ONLY BECAUSE HE IS CHEAP, plays favorites on this team and is part of the problem why we struggle down the stretch against most teams over 500. You need to write more articles calling Larry “Stupid” Drew out on how he messes this team up with his substitutions and strategies. Michael you know HINRICH has no business getting PARGO’S minutes. You know that this IDIOT COACH should be playing TMAC over Marvin “Duck” Williams. Ivan should get more minutes and probably should start over Collins. You make me sick with these tired little articles. Why don’t you quit and let VIVLAMORE have the job. Larry Drew should is a bad coach building on what Woody established. You have the nerve to talk about conspiracy theories, Michael. This coach puts players in according to either how much he likes them or how much they make. doc,

I’ve wondered before whether I’d be able to get away with using some of the tamer words I’ve learned on the blog that come from the Urban dictionary. But I haven’t seriously considered actually trying it.

Actually, over the past year we’ve had several black young families join the church. They’d probably understand the terms and call me out.

You ought to see our church now. When I came five years ago it was an older white congregation. There had only been one infant born during my first three years. Now we have lots of babies and several of them are black. Every Sunday morning there are old white ladies carrying around the black babies after church. It is the most beautiful sight. I haven’t heard even a whisper of racism. Just the opposite. It is what I’ve always thought the church should be.

What might surprise many on the blog, however, is that we are a very theologically conservative congregation. I like to say we are a bible-believing, Jesus-loving presbyterian church. And if I were to poll the congregation most would probably identify themselves as politically conservative as well. I don’t talk politics at all and discourage it among the congregation as it would distract us from the gospel and likely divide us unnecessarily.

Mark,

I’m no fan of Larry Drew. But you can’t rag on MC for not tearing him apart. Fisrt, it would hurt his access. But more importantly, it wouldn’t be true. Larry Drew has this team winning. They are exceeding all our expectations. He has overcome their disfunctions, their loss of Horford, and their numerous other injuries. Who among us would have thought they’d be seriously competing for 3rd in the east?

Either you have to give Drew credit or Sund credit for putting together such a good roster that is able to overcome Drew’s definiencies. Who gets the credit, Mark? Please tell us…

Grandad,

I don’t abhor Rob Bell. He is always “keeping it real”. He encourages people to stop pretending to be something they’re not. My lack for enthusiasm for Bell is more methodological than theological. He takes a less direct path to Christ than I prefer. He encourages people to seek out for themselves. I prefer, actually I am conscience bound, to take the more direct path to Christ. Jesus’ and Paul’s method must be my method.

From a less serious standpoint, I’ve read some of Bell’s writings and viewed several of his videos. He gives me a headache. I’m too old-fashioned I guess.

Rather have LD. As badly as he fails with substitutions and end game mgmt, he’s doing better than d’antoni at personality mgmt and sometimes that’s more important. Sadly we’re heading into the playoffs where most coaches are good in more than one area.

I’m wondering what acts or nonacts were considered “withdrawn demeanor” as well. I personally believe Joe Johnson and TMac need to be on the court for more minutes – it would help Joe not fall in love with initiating the offense so much when we are in close. When games are close late, every team knows who is getting the ball first . . . and that’s not always a good thing. TMac can beat a single defender off the dribble and should get more consideration from LD when games are in the final minutes/seconds. Defenses won’t be so eager to collapse on Joe because there will be another 6′7 scorer on the floor. And the big will have more license to play closer to the basket. Smith should not be on the perimeter with the clock down to seconds. That’s a guard’s job. MC, why are you not calling LD out for that play selection against Boston? You represent the fans, not the Hawks – no matter how much you get along.

MC thinks LD is doing great with game preparation. He has it on authority from completely independent sources, all associated with the Hawks organization, that LD’s game prep is better than Woody’s. That puts him on the same level as Thibs!

doc,

I am familiar with the german pietists who moved toward mysticism – Schleiermacher, Bultmann, Harnack, etc. Their theological liberalism moved them away from the objective standard of Scripture. I’m more “bible-centered” than any southern baptist you’ll ever meet, but my belief in God’s absolute predestination over every creature and circumstance centers me on God’s free grace rather than my religious preformance & legalism.

Back to mysticism. Because of the mysticism’s rejection of scripture, I’m generally not a fan of the mystics. However, I loved Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “The Cost of Discipleship”.

I realize my idea of a mystic might be a little different than what you meant. Correct me if I misunderstood what you mean by mystics.
