Vivlamore reporting from Philips Arena.
The Bulls will be without Derrick Rose tonight against the Hawks, the eighth straight game he has missed with a groin injury.
For the Hawks, Vladimir Radmanovic is a game-time decision with a back injury. The forward has missed five of the past six games with “tightness” in his back. UPDATE: Radmanovic will not play.
Without Rose, Hawks coach Larry Drew said his team will not change the way they approach playing the Eastern Conference leader. Rebounding and controlling the paint will be the key.
“Still a very, very capable ball club of winning without Rose,” Drew said. “We will attack them the way we have in the past. We have to control the boards. We have to control the paint. They really play an aggressive style in the paint area. We are going to have to bring a playoff intensity against this team because they are not going to hand it to us. They are not going to roll over because Rose is not in the lineup.”
Turnovers will be another issue facing the Hawks. They committed 22 turnovers in Tuesday loss at the Bucks, tying their third most this season. Ten of those turnovers came in the first quarter when the Hawks fell into a deficit they spent much of the game trying to erase.
“That is totally against the way we want to play, particularly on the road,” Drew said. “We talk about controlling the tempo, limiting our turnovers and how important it is to win the board game. At the end of the first quarter we had 10 turnovers. We were at a pace that wasn’t very good for us. Here we are 15 games until the end of the regular season and we are still talking about the same things we were talking about the first week of the season. It is something we will continue to harp on. As a coach, you hope at this point of the season, we are past that point where we are turning the ball over that many times. It’s the way we are turning the ball over. A lot of those errors are unforced, where we are trying to force the issue. Hopefully, we’ll just get better at.”
Jeff Teague had seven of the turnovers, but Drew’s message to his young point guard was simple.
“The only thing he needs to learn is how to bounce back,” Drew said. “… At this stage the last thing I want Jeff to do is play cautious.”
Finally, Drew expects to go deeper into his bench tonight against the Bulls, the fifth game in six nights. He had wanted to play more reserves against the Bucks but didn’t want to stop the momentum the starters had in erasing a 17-point deficit. Tracy McGrady played just 6:50, Willie Green played just 6:23 and Jerry Stackhouse did not play.
“I thought we had exerted a lot of energy to tie it and take the lead and I really wanted to ride the warm guys,” Drew said. “I was hoping I could rest both Josh [Smith] and Joe [Johnson] momentarily, which they did the start of the fourth, but I thought it was important to hang on to the momentum that we did have.
“Tonight, may be a little different story. I might have to go deeper into my bench.”

“You have a problem with my suggesting what bloggers “should” say, then you proceed to tell me what I “should” celebrate. There goes any credibilty you may have had. Bloggers express their opinions–that’s what this is for–regardless of how I think they “should” feel. And that’s all my entries are–opinions. I’ve crossed no lines here.
If you think a “good” effort and the resulting loss is “laudable,” then you represent the very reason ATL’s pro sports teams have claimed only one championship in more than 150 seasons of competition. There are NO excuses for that level of ineptitude, and acceptance of losing by you and too many others will only help ensure that sports history repeats itself in this city.”

The goal of every sports fan in the world should be for his or her sports team to win the ultimate prize – a championship.
How some of the people here cannot see this is just deplorable.
People on here are just praying we can get to the 2nd round this year and are praying for the best matchup. I guess it’s the norm on this blog to settle for mediocrity.
Glad that a select few of us rise above it. Go Dawgs

Gratifying to know that someone sees the performance of ATL’s teams in the same light I do, GM JeJe. I’m afraid we’re heavily outnumbered, but won’t change my feelings, and I don’t believe it will change yours either.
All I want is a championship–and no more excuses. With over 150 seasons of pro sports competion in ATL producing only one title, I don’t believe I’m being unfair at all–or asking too much.

This feels like one of those games where the Hawks will claw back into the game in the 3rd quarter, tie it up in the 4th, run out of gas and lose. Kind of like yesterday. The Bulls are not going to knock down contested 3s all day but their defense will carry them through.
The Bulls’ D is very good but the Hawks are bailing them out on that end by not posting up. Post up Josh and use his passing ability to make the Bulls pay for their defensive style.

LD and Sund both don’t have a contract for next yr and it shows..because LD is trying so hard to keep his job when its obvious that he will be coaching the D League next yr ..I seriously doubt anybody is going to give him a head coaching job in the NBA.

Ok. Let’s see the comments this time. All of the allocades for LD-the last game with the Bucks notwithstanding. Some bloggers even wanted to give LD “coach of the year”? Come on-back to reality. I give credit where credit is due. Yes, the Hawks were doing ok with the five game win streak before the Bucks, but then lost to the Bucks. Now, tonight, they play the Bulls, and can make up some ground on the Magic because they are currently losing to the Knicks. The Hawks will show you what they are made of-mediocrity, period. Yes they show fight. But how long can the fight continue when you have a coach like LD. I’m glad I have other things to do, because I stopped focusing on the Hawks long ago. I’ll watch games, but games like these-against a very good Bulls team? When the Hawks have a huge lead, I’ll watch until I see how long the Hawks can maintain it. A game like tonight is hard to watch, because: A. The Hawks are being outcoached. B. The Bulls players play with heart and will and have sucked up the Hawks spirit and energy. C. Other than the Jazz, the Hawks can not win against post 500 teams. Please do not re-new, any option for LD, and do not give Sund another year in the Hawks organization. Most sports writers who know the Hawks situation will agree with me, and I’ve read the owners (ASG) are waiting until the end of the season to make that decision maybe as carrot stick for LD and Sund. You can’t give what you don’t have-and that’s experience in winning.

Good job by Joe passing out of the double quickly and Josh by moving without the ball toward Joe to catch that pass. I’d rather see them post up Josh, but as long as whoever is posting up gets rid of it quickly when they are doubled, that’s how the Hawks are going to regain their offensive rhythm.

I don’t think he will put Collins back in over Ivan unless Ivan gets into foul trouble. Maybe that’s a little wishful thinking, but I don’t think Collins would have gotten so many first half minutes if not for Ivan’s 2 fouls.
I don’t like Kirk at point guard, and that will surely happen at some point in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but the Hawks can get by if they stick to posting up Josh during that time. The problem really only arises when Kirk has to create offense, which is what happens when LD takes out all the starters toward the late 1st-early 2nd quarters of every game.
“What is the Hawks offense?”
Haha… it should be post ups and pick and rolls every possession (mostly post ups since the Bulls have done a good job defending pick and rolls).

The Hawks need to play with that kind of intensity and belief. When it come down to it; that’s really what it’s all about. Most times, the Hawks coaches (LD, specifically), don’t really believe that he himself can coach. Then you have the Hawks players looking for leadership from who? Then they start to belive less of themselves as the game rolls on-esp. against good teams. They are down by 12 @ halftime. They will try to mount a comeback run, but Tom Theb will dose that flame out quickly and won’t give LD a snowballs chance in hell. The Hawks are just content to keep that sixth playoff spot & nothing else. Just like the Falcons, they shine against bad teams at home, but when put in the national spotlight, they can’t take the heat (no pun intended) and so-they get tossed out the kitchen.

Really, the Bulls from 3 in that first half reminded me a lot of Joe’s first quarter against the Jazz. When you are hitting contested shots from 20+ feet away with regularity, there’s not much the D can do to stop it other than wait for you to cool off. The trick is to take advantage when the other team cools off and put your own run together.

LD is the problem. He talks about match ups but he is clueless when it comes to playing to his teams strengths. Every freaking thing is an Isolation for Joe or Josh, or a broken play.
Tracy McGrady is a 6′9 G/F and he has regulated him to being a mannequin because he doesn’t run the offense thru him and doesn’t give him any shots or minutes for that matter.

Hawks didn’t even play particularly well during this 10-2 run. Gave up 3 open looks, an offensive board, and didn’t look great in the half court, and still shaved 8 points off that lead.
When the other team is hitting impossible shots to build up their lead, you can usually count on them cooling off, unless it’s Kobe or LeBron hitting them.

Can we start a fan petition or ask a reporter if he will ask Larry Drew as to how he can play Collins consistently when he is so awfully bad at both ends of the court. Instead of nothing he actually does more for the other team, and hurts our team. Its bad enough he scores 0 points and 0 rebounds every game, and gets beat on defense every time, but he always disrupts whatever rythym the offense has and commits turnovers as well. I can’t imagine a player who hurts his team more than Collins. He had a +/- of -9 this game, and pretty much every game is -10 or more. Can we fans get some answers about whether some blackmail or something is happening in this Collins situation? Why has no reporter inquired about this Collins situation, and why have we fans recieved no answers?

Funny how those Deng 3s don’t go in when there’s a hand in his face.
Dude is not that good. Any half decent shooter can look good if he gets open looks all game.
The difference between the Bulls and the Hawks is that the Bulls execute the offense and go to what works on offense whereas the Hawks don’t. That lets someone like Deng get open looks every game — even with no Rose — while the Hawks have to work their asses off for every look.

The most frustrating part about watching this is that the Bulls really are not any more talented than the Hawks. Cohorts, my Hawks are just gassed coming around the bend and, this schedule has been brutal coupled with all the injuries … not an excuse, but, I can’t be mad at my boys. They just were not supported in the paint after Al went down. Sund did nothing to rectify such a huge loss.
Al Horford matters. Zaza has been phenomenal and, great … but he has no backup. Ivan has been amazing in every way. Jeff has been too laid back more often than not. His spark is a flicker but, this is his rookie year. Kirk has been OK, but we need so much more.
We just gassed … Don’t berate them – look at management instead, thatks where the winning culture begins. We just don’t have owners that care about anything but lining their pockets.

” Tmac Fan ” – Tracy doesn’t need to retire. What he needs is to play for a team and a coach that knows how to use him.
LD doesn’t let him run the offense, doesn’t run plays for him nor gives him enough shots to be effective.
I can’t remember the last time Tracy has taken more than 7 shots per game in the last 30 odd games.

Tracy really has no choice. Mgmt isn’t going to waive him. I hate these kind of losses, because I care about how we play against really good teams. The HAWKS look really out matched, especially with the shooting from Deng. We beat the Bulls earlier in the season with this kind of shooting, but we certainly didn’t do it tonight. We’re not attacking the basket and not decisive enough with our passing. In the 2nd everything went south and the Bulls were hitting 3s.
Overall though, I like the HAWKS current standing in terms of the Playoffs. At this point they would be playing the Magic in the 1st round. Our best chance to make it to the ECF is to play the Magic and then play the Bulls (with Horford). I’m not certain we can beat the Bulls or Miami with or without Horford, but we don’t have any chance without him. I think his athletic ability alone, with Zaza coming off the bench can make a hugh difference. I hope we can at least see another 2nd round match-up against the Bulls, because I think Josh has really improved his game and might put on a show for the fans.
GO HAWKS!!

That game was ugly. Why Twin continues to get minutes is absolutely baffling. That dude is terrible in almost every aspect of the game. The bench really misses Pargo and it looks like T-Mac wont be getting consistent minutes for the rest of the season.

Well, it is just as I thought. Hawks lose 2 straight. Strangely, as bad as the Hawks were whooped tonight, I’m not sore about this game. The Bulls are the BEST TEAM IN THE NBA (record wise at least) and are at and/or near the top in defensive categories. This team was built the right way and houses one of (if not) the best coach in the NBA.
That being said, the Hawks are at a critical point in this stretch of games. A big losing streak could cost them in playoff seeding or knock them out of the playoffs, while a winning streak (coupled with a few losses of the teams ahead of them) could improve their playoff hopes.
I leave you guys with one thought. The Bulls have the best record for a reason—–>Thibs.

LD should always have either Joe Johnson or Josh Smith playing while the other is subbed/out/resting. I think LD is trying to see if another player can emerge as the team’s third scoring option while both Joe Johnson and Josh Smith are out of the lineup.

I saw Collins’ stat line for that Utah game. Dude [Collins] can’t even get a freakin’ rebound in two games [vs. Utah and vs. Chicago] while playing the Center position. Is it too late to call up Benson?

These guys are tired, back-back-back, road trip, back-back…
I blame LD for this one too, like last night, pointless…
He ran them ragged in pointless game against the Bucks…
4OT vs. Jazz, road trip to Mil, and Chi, NYK, Sixers on deck…
U look at schedule and ask whats more important?…
Home game vs. Chi or irrelevant away game vs. Bucks?
I’d much rather compete at home vs #1 team?
Now, they’re demoralized and tired as hell, with red hot NYK coming…
McGrady, Stackhouse, Dampier play a combined 8 min.
John Lucas III outplays Teague, what does that say about our chances?…
LD turning into Woody – run the horses till their tongues drag the ground…
Getting beat down the way we did, why not twin tower them?
Stackhouse has fresh legs but doesnt play???
Biggest point is he shouldnt have played starters more than 20min vs. Mil…
He ruined the biggest week trying to steal a win and killed the horses…

My Hawks appeared to have no interest what so ever in competing in any basketball game tonight. Perhaps, as a collective unit they are just mentally exhausted.
And, decided this morning, we’ll get the next one. Perhaps, they are pacing themselves for the play off run. To their credit, they are physically decimated.

there was jo reason twin should have been anywhere near the court tonight. once he set foot on the court it was all decline from there. no way he cost the game but as long as he is on there it is a farce of a game. he gets separatd too quickly from his man lke six feet. i was embarrassed for him. if dampier is worse then e should have left that slot open and saved the draft pick we just sold.

I was not luck, it was Jamal Crawford.

@Rod from College Park
These haters just refuse to accept Jamal Crawford’s value while was he was [playing] with the Hawks. Even though Jamal Crawford has been struggling with his shooting in his last five games, I would still have confidence in him [Crawford] making big shots in a playoff series. Until last year, the Hawks had not won a[n Eastern] Conference Semifinal game since 1997 [Check out the link below]. Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford were major contributors in the Hawks winning Game 1 of the second round of the playoffs against the Chicago Bulls. Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford scored 34 points and 22 points, respectively. Jamal Crawford made a clutch step-back three pointer on Ron Brewer with a little over a minute left in the 4th quarter and about three or four free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory. A lot of these Jamal Crawford haters will have a rude awakening once the playoffs start.

No, Belkin wanted to veto the trade because he thought 2 first round picks and Boris Diaw were too much to give up for Joe. Belkin was an idiot. 2 first round picks may not have been necessary, but that trade worked out fine for the Hawks. Joe’s first contract — the one he had from 2005-2010 — paid him properly. It’s his current contract that sucks, and Belkin was out of the picture by the time that decision was made.

Trayvon Martin case is heating up!
Video of Zimmerman, handcuffed, arriving @ Police Station. His head is shaved and no appearance of any fight, blood, or scuffle, his gray T-Shirt has no blood stains on chest from any broken, bloody nose. He was treated by medics @ scene, but there is no band aids anywhere to cover cuts or scrapes.
If you are fighting for your life, the t-shirt should be disheveled and not firmly tucked and pristine clean. He shot that kid w/o appearant provocation.
Zimmerman’s father is a retired Judge. Hmmm … Who would you call with that “one phone call”? Dad? Mmm Hmmm … You betcha! Zimmerman’s house was originally purchased in his Dad’s name and later transferred solely to George Z.
Oh! George’s clothing WAS collected and entered into evidence for further forensic study – that was significant! We’d been told he went home with his clothes on his back, but that was false. The clothes will tell a lot about what really happened. Basically, this man looks untouched,
unscathed and, doesn’t appear to have been in a physical scuffle, as he claimed to warrant murder on a child armed with Skittles and Arizona Ice Tea.
The police report had his name, height, weight … Apparently Trayvon had I.D. On him, but was toe tagged as : John Doe for three days, while he was drug tested and examined. His parents were NOT called for three days, while thay had his cell phone in their possession!
Can you say, cover up? Also, why did the STATE ATTORNEY show up @ 1030PM All Star Sunday Night to work the crime scene and determine/decide NO ARREST of the killer. Trayvon Martin was a NOBODY @ that point.
Problem is: George Zimmerman was a SOMEBODY! The Chief Gangsta had to clean it up!
Hah!!! It back fired! They NEVER thought the whole world would care and Al Sharpton would come to town to ASK questions. Now Curious George is in hiding ans scared for HIS life! Why did he place NO value on Trayvon Martin’s LIFE?
George Zimmerman! YOU are the “Fkg – Coon” not Trayvon! He was an A / B student headed to college next year!!!

Breaking News!
Delivered to you by: drmaryb – the entertainment reporter -
Now back to the Hawks … We Lost. Take it easy on the players, they have not been duly supported by management and, have hit the wall for now. They will bounce back once they get their legs underneath them.
Hopefully, we get swept in round 2 so that Sund and Drew are relieved of their duties and ownership will be exposed with their drawers down for the ISH they have done.
The ASKG have NO ONE to blame but the man in the mirror. If, Mr. Woodson won 53 games in the regular season from 13 wins when he arrived? Then, the play off performance has to be the measurement stick!
Drew will earn or lose his JOB in the post season, and as he would say “irregardless” of his injury excuses he will have to leave based on the rotations he used and HOW they played the game! Things like:
Reigning in Josh from the perimeter, Jeff Teague’s utilization, Ivan Johnson’s usage rate, bench utilization , rotations, offensive schemes, defensive efficiency and, such. Let’s Go Hawks!

Tired? Lets get real. THEY ARE GETTING PAID! When the players signed those contracts they signed understanding the expectations of the owners and fans. They will give it all night after night even if a limb is lost during the game, they expect you back by the next quarter. That sounds crazy but I can’t give them that excuse and no other NBA team either.
Good teams beat the HAWKS by common sense, they run the plays correctly. they take advantage of lazy defense and they play to the weaknesses of the other team. Every team knows to keep Josh on the outside, give him the shot, it is known he will miss more then he makes, that alone gives teams the advantage on the boards.
Watch other teams and see how they set him up to take the outside shot, that’s a defensive play in itself. It allows them to double JJ or hit the glass. Watch when we get a lead above 11 points, Josh is gonna do his thing and the lead evaporates. When Josh plays inside other teams have a problem and JJ does what he does best and that’s “catch and shoot”…Remember, the HAWKS won in 3 OT’s without Josh. I use to be a big fan of Josh, actually up to his 5th year.
I learned then a very a hard lesson, when I realized it was all about him. He gives you enough to think he’s a team player but he’s not. When the draft comes up the HAWKS need to make a move and I don’t mean resign. Cohesiveness makes a good team great. We can blame LD because we surely did blame Woodie and they had something in common. One couldn’t harness Josh amd the other thinks he’s great. Stop blaming the coach, the owners and put the blame where it belongs and that’s on the players and I mean the ones who are paid to PLAY.
The NBA is bigtime ball, excuses are a joke and realization is a must. Know why Marvin is playing a lil bit better coming off the bench? He does not have to be the 3rd or 4th option, his game has really suffered taking the back seat to JJ and Josh. Marvin leaves the team and you will indeed be blaming everything on LD and I don’t think he is much of a coach but the problem lies somewhere else.
