Vivlamore reporting from Milwaukee.
Here is a quick look at tonight’s game against the Bucks with the Hawks coming off Sunday’s four overtime victory over the Jazz – their third game in three nights. Add tonight’s game at the Bucks and tomorrow’s home game against the Bulls and that’s five games in six nights. The Bucks are playing their fifth game in six nights.
The Hawks will be without forward Vladimir Radmanovic due to his back. Radmanovic missed four straight games with the back injury before playing 17 minutes against the Wizards on Saturday. He did not play (coach’s decision) in Sunday’s epic against the Jazz.
While Radmanovic is the only player out (besides Jannero Pargo recovery from an appendectomy) coach Larry Drew said several other players are hurting and weary.
“We will see how it goes,” Drew said of going deep into his bench. “I think the one thing I’ve been pretty adamant about, I’ve got to be very mindful of the minutes my starters are playing. I don’t want to pile a lot of minutes on those guys. We do have some guys who are a little banged up, nicked up. Having to play tomorrow night, I don’t want to pile the minutes. Hopefully, we can come out and play well and I can have a normal rotation. If that’s not the case, it’s not the case. But we will keep an eye on the minutes.”
Drew admitted he is not sure just how his team will respond to another game so soon.
“Don’t know,” Drew said. “We’ve come off three tough games. … I know we needed that day off yesterday in the worst way. We came in for shoot-around today and guys seem to have a little energy, which I was happy to see. As far as a performance, to be perfectly honest, I don’t know. I’m anxious to see how we respond after these last three ball games.”
Joe Johnson played 55:23 against the Jazz. Zaza Pachulia (54:10) and Jeff Teague (52:32) also broke the 50-minute mark.
Drew expects an even more up-tempo Bucks team with the trade-deadline addition of Monta Ellis from the Warriors. The Hawks got similar games from the Bucks in two previous meetings this season (both five-point Hawks wins). Ellis adds another scoring dimension.
“I’ve always been a big Monta Ellis fan,” Drew said. “He is, in a lot of ways, similar to Joe Johnson. He can really score once he gets it going. … As far as playing up-tempo that doesn’t change. They just have another guy to break the defense down and put points on the board.”

This is one of the very, very rare occasions when I don’t have a problem with LD going with Kirk over Teague. Teague hasn’t protected the ball, and Kirk is doing what needs to be done right now — feed Joe and Josh and get out of the way.
Wish they would go back to Joe in the post. Make Ellis work. Those are easy points if you can get Joe in the paint with Ellis on him.

Well, it looks like my predictions for this week are already wrong. I thought the Hawks would win this game. Anyway, I’ve got to tip my hat to the Bucks and to Monta Ellis. I have more respect for the Bucks than I have for most teams in the league because they always make the most out of what they have. They were down 2 of their better scorers tonight with both Ilyasova and Delfino out, and they still got it done.
Monta Ellis is also more impressive than I had thought in the past. When it came down to winning time, he just took over the game and carried the Bucks through the fourth quarter. He’s not just a volume shooter or scorer, the way he may have appeared to be in the past. He’s capable of scoring efficiently in a variety of ways, but he also impacts the defensive end and does a good job of play-making for others. Nice pick-up for the Bucks. Having that go-to scoring option in Monta gives Milwaukee a dimension that they’ve desperately lacked for several years now. They’ve always been a good defensive team, but they struggled to score the ball in the past. Now, they actually look good on both ends of the floor. If they are healthy come playoff time, I could see them giving one of the top seeds a serious run.

Whoever captures that 8th seed should be interesting to watch in the playoffs in the first round. The Knicks have more talent than the Bucks, but the Bucks seem to have better chemistry and they play better team basketball. Still, both teams are interesting. The Knicks right now seem more likely to capture the 8 seed, but it will be fun to watch the seeding down the stretch of the regular season.

Oddly enough, Gerald Wallace, who is a pretty athletic finisher, was close to or leading the league in getting shots blocked for a while this season, I think. Glen Davis, I believe, led the league in blocked attempts in one of the previous seasons also. So, Marvin and Zaza are definitely not the worst.

“Jeff Teague seems to always get owned vs. Milwaukee. Didn’t see game but I’m sure Jennings owned him”
One of the main reasons for his perceived struggles vs. Milwaukee/Jennings is probably the fact that Jennings is one of the few guards who is just as quick, if not quicker than Teague, which makes it difficult for him to penetrate into the paint. When you keep Teague out of the paint, you take away a lot of his effectiveness. Teauge doesn’t seem to have much confidence in his outside game yet, or at least it doesn’t seem like it.

I’m a bit surprised that Joe struggled so much in the fourth with Dunleavy guarding him. By my recollection, Dunleavy has never been known as a good or great defender, but he was effective against Joe. I guess the length bothered Joe, and with Joe not relying on quickness as much as size to score, I suppose Dunleavy’s possible lack of foot-speed really didn’t hurt affect his ability to effectively defend Joe.
Still, if you would have told me that Dunleavy was going to do a better job defending Joe than Mbah a Moute before the game, I wouldn’t have believed it.

You sure seem to have the time to.
Let us know what you find out.

@James
Dunleavy is a good defender. He’s not great but he won’t get killed. He’s taller than Joe Johnson and just as big and quick. Plus he has long arms so he can bother shots that way. Actually he’s just a good NBA player.
I actually like this Bucks team without that overrated center. Now they are playing to their best players strengths which is run n gun (controlled) on offense with Jennings and Ellis and then gamble in the passing lanes and dig downs on defense.

James,
Gerald Wallace and Glen Davis are not teammates. Wallace get a lot of his shot blocks b/c he drive to the basket alot and Glen doesn’t have much of vertical leap. However, I think both guys are better scores than ZaZa and Marvin…

I think Ivan and the bench will be the difference with the hawks attempting to get past the 2nd round this year

“No my friend, that’s what YOU would say. I think their effort was laudable, despite losing the game. Too bad you seem to think that all the rest of us should think just like you. Damn, what a boring place this would be. You should celebrate the vast range of views here, but you seem to have a hard time with that. You are an intelligent blogger, but you cross the line when you start telling other bloggers what they “should” say. No offense intended, just FYI.”

You have a problem with my suggesting what bloggers “should” say, then you proceed to tell me what I “should” celebrate. There goes any credibilty you may have had. Bloggers express their opinions–that’s what this is for–regardless of how I think they “should” feel. And that’s all my entries are–opinions. I’ve crossed no lines here.
If you think a “good” effort and the resulting loss is “laudable,” then you represent the very reason ATL’s pro sports teams have claimed only one championship in more than 150 seasons of competition. There are NO excuses for that level of ineptitude, and acceptance of losing by you and too many others will only help ensure that sports history repeats itself in this city.

I still believe in Jeff Teague the problem he’s not a superstar yet, but compared to many other PG’s we’ve had he’s the best since a long time ago.
Yes even over Bibby and Kirk right now why cause he’s young and the only thing he really doesn’t have is that outside shot yet.

“I’ve always been a big Monta Ellis fan,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said before the game. “He is, in a lot of ways, similar to Joe Johnson. He can really score once he gets it going.” That’s great to hear the Bucks now have their equivalent to Joe Johnson per Larry Drew. Now does that mean the Bucks are paying HIM $120M also like we do Joe Johnson???
