Nets at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • Zaza Pachulia (Achilles) and Vladimir Radmanovic (back) are out. Marvin Williams and Ivan Johnson return.
  • Larry Drew is starting Jason Collins in place of Zaza. The Nets have Shelden Williams starting at center with Brook Lopez (ankle) out.
  • Drew on starting Twin: “He’s been a starter before and he gives us a defensive presence. I like getting him back into the starting lineup. I hate doing it under these conditions but at least he gets back into a rhythm against the starters. Since he’s just getting back I think it will be getting him back with that starting group. I’m excited to see how he responds to it.”
  • Zaza says he was worried about his Achilles because it was hurting yesterday but it felt better when he woke up today. He said he plans to make the trip for tomorrow’s game at the Wizards.
  • Drew said Vlad Rad shot around at yesterday’s light practice: “He still won’t be available to play. It sounds like the back is getting better. He still will be day-to-day.”
  • Ivan’s new baby, born Wednesday, is named Ivan Kaydan Johnson Jr.:“It’s a new start to my life. Hopefully I can get him to where I’m at right now without all the extra journeys. Everybody congratulated me so it made me feel good to be a new pop.”
  • ESPN dropped the April 11th Hawks-Celtics game in favor of Knicks at Bucks.

Najeh,

If you compare the 2011 playoffs seeds and win totals to the 2009 playoffs seeds and win totals. The top seeds were better, swing in the middle with Atlanta, and Orlando, and bottom feeders were pretty much the same. Plus you had a 2 seed in Boston who was fresh off a World Championship. I’ll stick with my OPINION. The East was tougher back then. Plus, I don’t say that Miami, and Chicago, are great because they have won absolutely positively nothing to this point.

The Truth,

Thanks for all the love and support. Hope my future post are to you liking. LOL

Larry Drew starting the WORST NBA player in the league in Jason Collins. The blackmail of a head coach continues, as a guy shooting .294 FG with .375 FT suggests something very tragic is going on in terms of extortion/blackmail on Jason Collins end. The guy averages 0.9 pts/game, gets beat on EVERY possession he plays defense, gets beat on the boards CONSISTENTLY, commits numerous turnovers, commits numerous moving screen (does he even know how to set a screen), is the slowest player in the league, offers nothing on the offensive, defensive, or transition games, shoots ,294 from the field, and he is our starter at C? WOW!!! Eric Dampier did you date Larry Drew’s daughter or something?

Hi guys, its your favorite goofy dufus here in big Jason Collins. I am very smart and plan to open up a tax business with some of my Stanford bros. I had lasagna and a salad for dinner tonight. I wear size 18 shoes for my big goofy feet. Enough about me, here is what I think I will do tonight in the basketball game against the Nets. I will play 32 minutes. I will grab 2 rebounds. I will score 0 points. I will go 0-4 from the field, and 0-2 from the FT line. I will have 0 blocks and 0 steals. I will commit 5 fouls. I will have 4 turnovers. Thank you guys for the love, I like Larry Drew.

What do you guys think of my .294 FG percentage and .375 FT percentage? That means out of every 100 shots I take…29 go in the basket!!! and out of 100 free throws I make 37 of them!!! Yeah….I am Jason Collins….and I want to get that 0.9 pts up to a full 1 point/game by the end of the year.

Considering Jason’s role on the team, I don’t think he’ll ever get 100 shots up in a single season with the Hawks. Josh might get 100 shots up within a few games, and Joe might do the same, but Jason is lucky if he is even passed the ball on this team. So, I don’t think his field goal percentage is much of an issue, and the same goes for his FT percentage, since he very rarely goes to the FT line and L.D. rarely has him in games in crunch time unless it’s against the Magic.

Collins’ usage is not nearly high enough to really judge him based upon stats. His value on the court is something does not show up on the stat sheet. As long as he does the thing he does well on a consistent basis while he’s in the game, we shouldn’t complain.

at least marvin remains off the bench and jj the sf.

maybe dampier gets some time to show twin needs tie or suit jacket on at games sitting in the second row behind the bench so ld doesnt look stupid. -8 in 9+ minutes to be a huge part of the hoston resurgence.

rod compating 2008 when we won 37 vs the year with 53 wins next to the year ld takes over to follow that year is hysterical. the east in cmparison to the west has been down sonce the years of bird, then isiah and finally mj they dont remember top to bottom competition. even this year looks awful for softness in the east. whatever you are on a roll with irrationalization.

btw woodys last year was our window and basg wouldnt spend to get a big. singular teams with only queen and dh were all in the way and if stern and refs hadnt gotten in the way we shiwed we were better than the cavs that year. never again will we be that close unless worlds collide and the pairings fall out like najeh suggested as our best chance the other day.

So Jason Collins gets away (suppossedly) with averaging .290 FG%, .375 FT %, and 0.9 Pts./game because he plays “good” defense. But he doesn’t, he gets beat consistently, he commits fouls when he doesn’t get beat, he commits turnovers whenever he is passed the ball, he commits moving screens all the time, and he is slow. So how does a guy who cant shoot at all, provides no offense, gets beat on defense, is slow, can’t rebound, and commits turnovers and penalties at innoportune times help the team? He doesn’t he hurts the team, and it is not uncommon to see Jason Collins with a +/- of -13 like last game at Cleveland.

1) If you hate Kirk Hinrich at the pg position, you should be shutting up about this already.

Najeh Davenpoop

Kirk has played well while starting at the 2 and the offense looks better with him at the 2 as opposed to Marvin at the 3. Pretty much every possession where he brings the ball up and plays the point is a wasted possession, though. As long as he stays at the 2 and Teague runs the point, everything is fine.

My main beef with Kirk starting showed itself today, with Gerald Wallace dominating Joe on the boards at the SF position. The Nets’ rebounding advantage is what kept them in the game, and the biggest advantages they had on the glass were at C and SF. That’s the problem the Hawks will have to deal with as long as they go with this lineup, and tonight it was made even worse since they started a non-rebounder at center. Unless Joe makes a conscious effort to crash the boards, it puts a lot of pressure on Josh and Zaza to hold it down on the glass.

Najeh,

In all seriousness, if Marvin played to a fraction of his physical potential as a starter, this would not be a problem. Instead, he goes out there game after game and freakin’ disappears.

We need at upgrade at SF, and we could then leave SG to Joe.

I will score 0 points. I will go 0-4 from the field, and 0-2 from the FT line. I will have 0 blocks and 0 steals. I will commit 5 fouls. I will have 4 turnovers”

Well I was 0-2, not 0-4…. but I did play 13 minutes and did have 2 rebounds, and 0 blocks, and 0 steals , as well as 0 assists. I didnt commit a turnover tonight (luckily), and I only had 3 fouls, as opposed to 5. I did score 0 points though as I predicted. Pretty close prediction.

Joe is doing fine at SF because Hinrich has been good as a starter.

The real issue is the fact that Josh keeps taking hideous jumpshots. As great as he’s playing, he’d be a damn superstar if he cut out these jumpshots which HE HAS NOT, DOES NOT, AND NEVER WILL SHOT WELL

“Josh . . we get 5 straight baskets at point blank range. . and you just hoist up a jumper like that?

And your people think fans are just supposed to shut up about shots like that?”

His people may just be a little perplexed why Josh is getting clowned on a night when he’s carrying the team, when the real reason the Nets are in this game is because they have dominated the boards, highlighted by Gerald Wallace out-rebounding Joe 9-2.

*****************

Always an apology for Josh. People simply want to see him DOMINATE. Instead of 12 – 25 FG, he could’ve easily been 12 – 19 FG with a few more assists . . or even 15 – 25 FG, had he just gone to the hole.

Nope.

Fans love his effort, but hate that he constantly forces up bad jumpshots. But I guess fans can’t point out why they get frustrated with him on a night in which he shoots 11 – 14 FG on shots 13 feet and in . . but 1 – 11 FG on shots 13 feet and out.

The ish ain’t rocket science.

I guess you overlooked what Wallace shot from the field. Was the 3 – 14 FG he shot from the field the reason why the Nets were in the game, or the 9 rebounds ( with only one of them being an offensive rebound ).

But I get it. People point out something negative against Josh, and Josh supporters have to fire back. Fine. We can play that game.

JJ doesn’t rebound like he should. And Josh takes a ton of ill-advised jumpers, especially when he’s ice cold.

Here’s my marvin theory…

He’s got a strange, somewhat inflexible build. Maybe it’s his back.

At any rate, he plays stiff, which means other than hitting the jumper now and then, he’s simply limited. He can’t move with anything approaching quickness, no lateral movement anymore. He’s old before his time.

He just ain’t got “it”. Period.

The Monger

I will have to say this recent run by the Hawks will make the postseason dissapointment all that more bittersweet, because we have seen this side of the Hawks so often against lesser opponents. Against weaker teams like the Nets and Cavs… Joe and Josh play inside out, hustle on defense, make accurate fast passes all hoop while driving to the basket, push the transition game and find some good easy looks for easy baskets….basically the exact opposite of what we will see against better defensive teams in the East like the Celtics, the Bulls, and the Heat. The Hawks may once again win the first round again, but will definately lose in the 2nd to one of those teams. They need to find a way to play with this aggression and urgency against elite competition. Josh looked like a beast against Kris Humphries in the 4th quarter, and whoever else guarded him. The question is why can’t he do it against Carlos Boozer or Kevin Garnett, who aren’t even that elite of defenders anymore….I think the mental makeup for the Hawks just isn’t there. Until Joe, Josh, Kirk, and even Marvin can have shooting games like this against elite competition then they won’t get anywhere…

I definitely think Marvin would have rebounded better than Joe did tonight, but Joe played well in other aspects of the game, so I’m not complaining.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’m sitting here crying like Marvin’s grandma that he’s not in the lineup. I think this lineup (with Zaza instead of Collins obviously) is good for the most part, but rebounding is the one big question mark.

The Monger

Even when Al gets back for the playoffs, if Joe, Josh, Marvin, and Kirk don’t ball out, and Teague doesn’t push the tempo, and play like tonight with 0 turnovers while still driving the lane and being aggressive with passes, then the Hawks won’t win. They need ALL of that stuff happening, plus ZaZa attacking the boards and Al getting healthy to have a good chance against Miami or Chicago to get to their first NBA Finals…

Not even taking into account if Kirk plays good defense and starts knocking down shots like he has for the past few games, and Marvin plays up to his abilities and starts averaging 15 ppg instead of 10. Plus if ZaZa can keep up the intensity once Al returns, that will be a great Center rotation with Al and ZaZa. I know this is a bunch of IF’s, but all if takes is to get hot at the right time, just ask the Mavericks last year….they had a team that had up’s and down’s during the regular season, and just got hot towards the end last year…now they are NBA champions.

People “hate” on Marvin. That’s the difference.

It would be one thing if they actually pointed out something wrong that he constantly did throughout the game. That’s not the case with Marvin. Him just stepping onto the court causes people to “hate”.

With Josh, it’s mainly people just wanting him to stop doing one simple thing. But he refuses to do it.

He gets props for a great game tonight, especially coming up big in the 4th quarter. But people know that there’s no way he can jack up all of those jumpers when he is cold, and expect the Hawks to advance in the playoffs.
