Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
5:50 pm March 21, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- UPDATE: Larry Drew says Al Horford, out since Jan. 17 surgery to repair a torn left pectoral, got some shots up yesterday. “That’s very encouraging to hear,” Drew said. “I don’t know how far he was able to raise his arm.”
- But Drew said he’s still assuming Horford won’t return this season: “From Day 1 when he had the surgery I was told he would be out for the regular season and there’s a remote possibility we can get him back for the playoffs. My mindset has been to count him out for the year. I don’t want to get my hopes up and the team’s hopes up that he can come back and then he doesn’t and then a mentally there’s a letdown.”
- Vladimir Radmanoivic (back) is out.
- Marvin Williams (hip) said he would test his injury before the game but Larry Drew ruled him out and said he’s not sure when Williams will return.
- Ivan Johnson returned to San Antonio to deal with his girlfriend’s pregnancy. He’s not expected to return by game time.
- Willie Green (hamstring) is expected to play after he dressed for Monday’s game vs. the Celtics but didn’t play.
- For the Cavs, Anderson Varejao (wrist) is out and Daniel Gibson (ankle) is questionable.
- I’m still getting lots of inquiries on Twitter about the Hawks signing one of the free agents who’ve been released. Atlanta’s roster is full, so they would have to waive a player (and eat the salary) or buy out a player (no candidates for that) to open up a spot for the new guy. Either move would add to the team’s payroll and luxury-tax bill. In other words, it’s not happening.

“Najeh, you are probably the only person in the world who would even sugest that Atlanta fans are comparable to NYC fans in terms of passion for their team. but you’re a homer, so I guess that is to be expected.”
I absolutely think Braves fans are better fans than Mets fans. Not so coincidentally, the Braves have been much more successful in recent history than the Mets have.
The point is that fans everywhere are mostly the same. If the team gives them something to cheer about, they will respond accordingly. Boston fans and New York fans are passionate about their teams because they have more rings than Saturn. Atlanta fans are not so passionate about our teams because we don’t have sh-t other than the 1995 Braves. This idea that certain cities have worse fans than others is just another media creation. If ESPN was based in Atlanta instead of Bristol, CT, there would be no talk of how bad Atlanta sports fans are.

shea has been pretty empty in spite of its new status. not even that could move the meter. really there are few municipalities that support the home team with unconditional love. the bulls couldnt do it when they slumped. maybe the packers, bears, cubs and red sox can do it; add to the list if you want as i am sure i missed some but true winning not entertainment breeds attendance not the other way around. no show on broadway continues endlessly.

From a Basketball Prospectus article recapping the Sloan conference, posted by Bret in response to my Jason Collins post:
http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=8912756&postID=7934142396278852558
“The patron saint of adjusted rebounding is the player to whom I compared Udoh, veteran center Jason Collins. The Maymin-Maymin-Shen team found that Collins increased his team’s defensive rebound percentage by more than any other player from 2006-07 through 2009-10 despite never grabbing more than 14.4 percent of available defensive boards (league average for a center is around 22 percent). Subjectively, the explanation for this discrepancy has been that Collins is so good at boxing out he allows his teammates to grab additional rebounds.”
WOW! Go Jason Collins!

1. Sell 2nd rd pick for cash…maybe $1M…
2. Cant buyout min wage player w month left? …$200k?

I’m not surprised at all that Collins increased his team’s rebound rate by boxing out. I also think he does a good job using his body to seal off defenders to create a lane for teammates driving inside from the perimeter. He’s a specialist. He sucks at most things, yes, but there are a few things he does really well, and most of them involve positioning his body properly and understanding where he needs to be on the floor.

That is a great and fresh new perspective about the X-Facto Jason Collins. The intangibles are never seen on a stats cube, and are invaluable to the Hawks defeating the Magic in a 7 game series – home or away.
If zaza can just keep up Horford’s end of the bargin we good – except they have no back up bigs that are useful.

I think that Atlanta’s attendance in all sports are where they should be. I think that the best this teams’ attendance can be would be 10-15th and that’s pretty good. What I don’t agree with is how everyone thinks that the attendance will sore up to the top 5 just because of winning championships or winning games. I think that fanbases around the USA have shown their true colors and reality is that Atlanta wont scratch the top 5 in attendace just by winning titles. You look at the Blazers and the Hawks and you realize that the blazers are the exact same team the hawks are minus an ownership group. I do think that Atlanta has a clouded fanbase because of the gigantic international community and migration from outsiders. However, I just dont think that the grass is as green as some say it will be with a championship- a good- coach- a superstar- maybe two superstars- possibly 3 superstars- an MVP. I mean that’s a lot of garbage to ask for just to get a top 5 team in attendance. I just don’t see it happening. 10-15th at best is just about right regardless of what ESPN says.

The Haeks (yes that’s what they are to me) are holdin on for dear life in the NBA, period. I’m sure you bloggers are enjoy the Knicks game tonight vs. Hawks @ Cleveland? The Hawks will make this game interesting (make you want to look at them) only because the score will be close. That would be the only reason why I will flip the channel on my remote. Notice the difference of leadership Mike Woodson vs. Larry Drew. LD isn’t even in Woodson’s league. LD still coaches like an amateur on a middle school level. LD could be substituted by any high school coach. Why doesn’t he just resign? The man lives in California and needs the gig. ASG is the main culprit. They seem like they need a group consensus to make any decision to make a move on a player, coach, or GM. I’ll never forget the time-when the Hawks fired Mike Woodson. A question was asked over the firing of Mike Woodson-and I believe it was Sund, who answer that although Mike Woodson had a good winning record-that when they hire LD-they will take that chance and see where the cards fell. Since Mike Woodson has been gone the Hawks do win, but only because they had the talent built while Woody was putting the Hawks together. ASG and Sund are playing the conservative card-don’t mess with nothing and hopefully when everyone is healthy, things will work out. Meanwhile, these professional players and prospects have the Hawks number (their history/ bio.) They know the Hawks have the worst management or maybe the second worst in the NBA. They also know that LD is not a good coach-no, not even an average coach-he is a poor coach. Some of these fans just don’t see this, or don’t want to face the truth. They want to Blame Josh, Joe, or Kibbles-n-bits (Marvin) for the Hawks disarray. The truth is, the Hawks are jacked up. I want to be a Hawks fan, but they make it real hard-because of their issues. I’d like to see them play well, but as soon as they seem like they are playing well, then it’s LD who drops the ball. One night Josh is up; the next-he’s a ball hog. Joe’s up one or two games-then he presses his iso-Joe- and it’s a loss. But guess what? The common denominator in all the Hawks mishaps-is the coach. No one on the Hawks payroll of course, wants to burn bridges, and I understand that. That’s why when Charles Barkley called out the ASG group on TNT-I felt as sense of relief-that someone wasn’t scared to tell the truth about this management team on national TV. What did Barkley have to lose? He’s paid, and doesn’t owe anything to those clowns at ASG. same goes for Shak, and Chris Webber. The more people know about the Hawks-the more their cards will be pulled and maybe one of these days-95% of the fan base will know, as well-and make the ASG change their dull-dead to the wood, hardheaded, arrogant no caring attitude-about running this organization-or sell the damn team. The Hawks at best-are playing like an 8th seed team and shouldn’t be thought of any more than that. If that is acceptable to you-Mr. Sund & ASG-then keep on doing what you’re doing-and that is-nothing.

I like this play the Hawks have been running where Josh comes from the other side of the floor to receive the ball in the post. When they run this play, he almost always gets the ball closer to the hoop than he does if he has to work for post position using his own strength. The closer to the hoop he receives the ball, the lower the likelihood of him shooting a jumper.

I like the play the Hawks were runnin’ on offense. Teague and Josh pick n’ roll with a pass to the wing as Josh goes around the baseline. Then a pass to Josh on the low post very close to the basket. Got 2 FGs and 2 FTs out of it. Keep runnin’ it.

As a Tracy McGrady fan I have to say that I’ve been disappointed in his play the last 10 games…He played a lot better in Detroit last yr. I’m not sure If its a matter of how LD has used him or what but he’s better than what he’s posting in terms of stats….Nobody cares about what you did yesterday..its about what you can do today and what you can bring tomorrow…If he really wants to win a ring then he needs perform in a way that makes it hard for LD not to choose him as the first player off the bench..screw it..be selfish and take some shots…play your game..and stop thinking about fitting in….If the Hawks are going to make some noise he is a key cog in the machine…He needs to be more aggressive and a lil bit more selfish…

Does anyone have Larry Drew or Rick Sund’s e-mail? I have to ask one of them why Jason Collins is both on the roster and playing significant minutes. It is not even funny, to the point of asking them about blackmail situations involving Collins. The man is shooting .294 from the field, .375 FT, averages 0.9 points a game, is a turnover machine, and gets beat offensively, defensively, and on the boards. Not to mention he is the slowest person in the NBA by far. What is going on here, guys? Is it something we need to be seriously concerned about as fans? Could this nightmare go on for 3-4 more years with Jason Collins still on the team and still playing in games?

And I honestly think Jason Collin’s numbers must be inflated or fiddled with. There is no way he is shooting .294 from the field, it must have been from 2 or 3 “good” games, because i think it should be closer to .194 from the field from all the games I have seen. And that .375 from the line seems high as well, I would have expected it to be around .275, but I must have missed a few of his better games I guess.

Crazy game, I can’t believe the Hawks pulled it out. That 3 by Joe to put the game away was unbelievable. What a shot. I kind of feel bad for Irving, he did everything he could and was easily the best player in this game, but it didn’t matter.
This would have been a big letdown for the Hawks if they would have lost this game, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t that big of a win, just an exciting game down the stretch. This is a game the Hawks should have won looking at the standings, but there sure was a lot of drama involved to get the win. Craziest game of the year, I’d say.

Hard to believe we won the game while getting out-rebounded by 16 and Joe and Josh combining to shoot 14-45 (they’ll probably shoot a lot better next time), but the Cavaliers’ turnovers helped to balance that out. The Hawks ended up getting 15 more field goal attempts than the Cavs in this game, and I think think that was the biggest difference.

I don’t think it would be all that surprising if he came back at some point in the post-season, especially if the Hawks were to get past the first sound, that means he’d have about a month and a half more of rehab before returning. What would surprise me is if he came back and was effective. That was a pretty severe injury, and after missing that much time, it seems like anyone would be very, very rusty, in additional to being tentative while worrying about re-injury.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The Hawks should take advantage of this streak of “winnable” games. They have NJ and Washington coming up next. The Hawks could very easily move up to the 5 seed with their remaining schedule. There’s not much time to rest in between games, but the Hawks are going to be playing a lot of teams with losing records for the rest of the season.

Al wouldn’t have to be that close to 100% to be the best big man off the bench for this team. The problem is if LD inserts a 60% or 70% Al into the starting lineup and gives him his old role back, the way he did for Kirk. Zaza, despite the missed layups, has done a good enough job at center that Al doesn’t need to be handed his starting job back until he proves he is 100%.

About my guy Zaza:
Jan – avg 6 pts -&- 6 rebs
Feb – avg 7 pts -&- 8 rebs
Mar – avg 9.5 pts -&- 10 rebs
Interestingly; his fg% went down as his playing time went up.
*[from 22 min in Jan to 34 min currently]
Zaza gets knocked from pillar to post, doesn`t complain,
brings his lunch pail, gathers his double digit rebounds &
occasional double-double and goes on about his business.
He has developed a nice little mid-range game;
he`s the closest we have to an enforcer,
and he plays his ass off.
Zaza is like the old Timex watch catch phrase:
‘`he takes a lickin` and keeps on tickin` ‘`
Zaza gets fouled more and receives fewer calls
than any player in the association.
Plus, he`s a fan favorite !

I still do not understand how the Hawks won that game. They are constantly having to make up for Hinrich and Zaza errors. Hinrich gave the Cavs 5 pts in OT. He had the bush league turnover and then the clear path foul (leading to 2 FT’s and a 3). That guy sucks.
Zaza might be the biggest choke job in the league. Guy nearly p#sses his pants anytime he has to take a big shot (sorry, big layup).
Joe and Josh bailed Hinrich and Zaza out. A Hawks loss tonight would have been on those two a$$clowns.

I can’t disagree more with those of you saying the schedule is hard. It is not. There are 12 wins there, for sure. Not every game is easy, but most of the games are at home. And, don’t forget that they have some days off coming up, which will be huge. I think the Hawks will close the season strong.
