Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • UPDATE: Larry Drew says Al Horford, out since Jan. 17 surgery to repair a torn left pectoral, got some shots up yesterday. “That’s very encouraging to hear,” Drew said. “I don’t know how far he was able to raise his arm.”
  • But Drew said he’s still assuming Horford won’t return this season: “From Day 1 when he had the surgery I was told he would be out for the regular season and there’s a remote possibility we can get him back for the playoffs. My mindset has been to count him out for the year. I don’t want to get my hopes up and the team’s hopes up that he can come back and then he doesn’t and then a mentally there’s a letdown.”
  • Vladimir Radmanoivic (back) is out.
  • Marvin Williams (hip) said he would test his injury before the game but Larry Drew ruled him out and said he’s not sure when Williams will return.
  • Ivan Johnson returned to San Antonio to deal with his girlfriend’s pregnancy. He’s not expected to return by game time.
  • Willie Green (hamstring) is expected to play after he dressed for Monday’s game vs. the Celtics but didn’t play.
  • For the Cavs, Anderson Varejao (wrist) is out and Daniel Gibson (ankle) is questionable.
  • I’m still getting lots of inquiries on Twitter about the Hawks signing one of the free agents who’ve been released. Atlanta’s roster is full, so they would have to waive a player (and eat the salary) or buy out a player (no candidates for that) to open up a spot for the new guy. Either move would add to the team’s payroll and luxury-tax bill. In other words, it’s not happening.

A loss tonight and we are only 3.5 games ahead of the BUCKS in the Loss column, 9th seed.

Collins fails to retrieve the defensive board and then compounds the situation by giving up an and-1. [smh]

Down by 14 to an inferior team. Hey, I have an idea. Let’s shoot jumpers.

I would say LD is only playing Collins because Ivan is injured, but based on the Celtics game that’s not entirely true.

“The point is that fans everywhere are mostly the same. If the team gives them something to cheer about, they will respond accordingly. Boston fans and New York fans are passionate about their teams because they have more rings than Saturn. Atlanta fans are not so passionate about our teams because we don’t have sh-t other than the 1995 Braves. This idea that certain cities have worse fans than others is just another media creation. If ESPN was based in Atlanta instead of Bristol, CT, there would be no talk of how bad Atlanta sports fans are.”

The one notable exception is Philadelphia. Those people are crazy. They take a perverse pride in their being fans. I lived in the city for three years while getting my master of divinity.

Collins and Diamper are a waste of money and roster spots. Just eat their contracts to signed Hollins and Hickson.

If the Hawks get a first-round playoff matchup against the Magic this postseason, Collins will be useless against Dwight Howard.

Hawks cant afford to lose to the weenie teams. Milwaukee and NY are coming for dat azz. Btw, the Hawks never have ‘energy’ at home when Joe plays. Come on guys. Get your shizz together!

Big Ray

Recognizable symptom – Josh and Joe both trying too hard to do too much, and not using the proper methods = missed shots.

This is why “playing with energy” is partially a myth. You do need to have direction.

Najeh Davenpoop

I like this play the Hawks have been running where Josh comes from the other side of the floor to receive the ball in the post. When they run this play, he almost always gets the ball closer to the hoop than he does if he has to work for post position using his own strength. The closer to the hoop he receives the ball, the lower the likelihood of him shooting a jumper.

Big Ray

my bad, that’s Donald Sloan. Whatever…he still burned Teague, who looks like he doesn’t much care to play tonight.

Josh is holding the point of attack. Keep giving it to him, and he’s gotta keep going to the hole.
