Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
5:50 pm March 21, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- UPDATE: Larry Drew says Al Horford, out since Jan. 17 surgery to repair a torn left pectoral, got some shots up yesterday. “That’s very encouraging to hear,” Drew said. “I don’t know how far he was able to raise his arm.”
- But Drew said he’s still assuming Horford won’t return this season: “From Day 1 when he had the surgery I was told he would be out for the regular season and there’s a remote possibility we can get him back for the playoffs. My mindset has been to count him out for the year. I don’t want to get my hopes up and the team’s hopes up that he can come back and then he doesn’t and then a mentally there’s a letdown.”
- Vladimir Radmanoivic (back) is out.
- Marvin Williams (hip) said he would test his injury before the game but Larry Drew ruled him out and said he’s not sure when Williams will return.
- Ivan Johnson returned to San Antonio to deal with his girlfriend’s pregnancy. He’s not expected to return by game time.
- Willie Green (hamstring) is expected to play after he dressed for Monday’s game vs. the Celtics but didn’t play.
- For the Cavs, Anderson Varejao (wrist) is out and Daniel Gibson (ankle) is questionable.
- I’m still getting lots of inquiries on Twitter about the Hawks signing one of the free agents who’ve been released. Atlanta’s roster is full, so they would have to waive a player (and eat the salary) or buy out a player (no candidates for that) to open up a spot for the new guy. Either move would add to the team’s payroll and luxury-tax bill. In other words, it’s not happening.

In other news, it’s good to know that Al was back in the gym getting some shots up. Has he been cleared to start strength training yet?

I don’t think it would be all that surprising if he came back at some point in the post-season, especially if the Hawks were to get past the first sound, that means he’d have about a month and a half more of rehab before returning. What would surprise me is if he came back and was effective. That was a pretty severe injury, and after missing that much time, it seems like anyone would be very, very rusty, in additional to being tentative while worrying about re-injury.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Same here.
Regardless, Zaza is almost 7 feet tall and plays hoops for a living. Absolutely NO excuse to miss a layup. MANY layups, actually.

Point of the post was that gravity is racist to white people.

The Hawks should take advantage of this streak of “winnable” games. They have NJ and Washington coming up next. The Hawks could very easily move up to the 5 seed with their remaining schedule. There’s not much time to rest in between games, but the Hawks are going to be playing a lot of teams with losing records for the rest of the season.

Al wouldn’t have to be that close to 100% to be the best big man off the bench for this team. The problem is if LD inserts a 60% or 70% Al into the starting lineup and gives him his old role back, the way he did for Kirk. Zaza, despite the missed layups, has done a good enough job at center that Al doesn’t need to be handed his starting job back until he proves he is 100%.

About my guy Zaza:
Jan – avg 6 pts -&- 6 rebs
Feb – avg 7 pts -&- 8 rebs
Mar – avg 9.5 pts -&- 10 rebs
Interestingly; his fg% went down as his playing time went up.
*[from 22 min in Jan to 34 min currently]
Zaza gets knocked from pillar to post, doesn`t complain,
brings his lunch pail, gathers his double digit rebounds &
occasional double-double and goes on about his business.
He has developed a nice little mid-range game;
he`s the closest we have to an enforcer,
and he plays his ass off.
Zaza is like the old Timex watch catch phrase:
‘`he takes a lickin` and keeps on tickin` ‘`
Zaza gets fouled more and receives fewer calls
than any player in the association.
Plus, he`s a fan favorite !
Go Hawks / Go Zaza !

I still do not understand how the Hawks won that game. They are constantly having to make up for Hinrich and Zaza errors. Hinrich gave the Cavs 5 pts in OT. He had the bush league turnover and then the clear path foul (leading to 2 FT’s and a 3). That guy sucks.
Zaza might be the biggest choke job in the league. Guy nearly p#sses his pants anytime he has to take a big shot (sorry, big layup).
Joe and Josh bailed Hinrich and Zaza out. A Hawks loss tonight would have been on those two a$$clowns.

I can’t disagree more with those of you saying the schedule is hard. It is not. There are 12 wins there, for sure. Not every game is easy, but most of the games are at home. And, don’t forget that they have some days off coming up, which will be huge. I think the Hawks will close the season strong.
Of Course, with a piece of crap like Hinrich running around, things are never a lock. Hinrich cannot get out of this town fast enough, as far as I’m concerned.
