Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 103, Cavs 102

  • The Hawks played hard after a lackluster start (especially Josh Smith) and Joe Johnson made some big shots. Jerry Stackhouse (!) balled like it’s 2001. The Hawks won, which can never be taken for granted in this league.
  • But, honestly, that’s about all the praise I can muster for them after this one.
  • The Hawks just made fewer blunders than the Cavs at winning time and escaped with a hard-fought-but-fortunate W. “I thought we were dead in the water down six with two minutes to go,” Larry Drew said. “I guess the basketball gods were with us. We made plays to finish.”
  • I guess that’s one way to think about it, but one of the basketball gods had a strong resemblance to Byron Scott. He decided not to foul before Joe tied it with a clean look from 25 feet in regulation. “We figured we would just play solid defense instead of taking the foul,” Scott said.
  • Neither did the Cavs pressure, blitz, deny, trap or do anything to disrupt Joe on that shot, the 3 he made just before that or the short J he made near the end of overtime. Compare that to the way the Celtics absolutely would not let Joe have a chance to beat them late in the game Monday.
  • I just can’t believe the Cavs didn’t do something, anything to prevent Joe from getting clean looks with the game on the line and neither could Joe: “I really was surprised that I caught it and turned and I was that wide open. All I could think about was getting it up.”
  • Joe needed one screen to get in position for the game winner. Antawn Jamison appeared to consider helping when Joe got closer to the basket but then decided it was best to let him take an uncontested 12-footer. “We gave them the game,” Scott said, and at least he included himself.
  • Before all of that Drew had tried to one-up (one-down?) Scott by choosing not to to foul with the Cavs up 89-88 and about a three-second differential between the game and shot clocks. Kyrie Irving blew by Kirk Hinrich for a layup to score with 5.4 seconds to go and actually could have ran off even more time and left the Hawks with maybe a second or so.
  • “I thought about [fouling],” Drew said. “But I made the decision to go ahead and defend. I didn’t think they take a shot at the expiration of the shot clock. I thought we would get another opportunity.”
  • Zaza Pachulia blew another important layup and this time he was even more wide open than he was at Denver. Zaza had a good game otherwise and is having a career season but finishing at the rim remains the big hole in his game. Sometimes he looks like he’d rather be fouled.
  • Drew: “I told him, ‘Big fella, I’m going to continue to come to you and I have all the confidence in the world in you. You’ve blundered a couple but it doesn’t change the way I feel about you.”
  • Bad: Joe needed 19 shots for 22 points. Good: He made big shots, made five of six free-throw attempts and had six rebounds, five assists against zero turnovers and two (!) blocked shots.
  • Josh settled for Js late but I’m inclined to cut him slack. He had little help on the boards (13 of Atlanta’s 26 defensive rebounds, four of its 11 offensive), was alone as usual defending the rim and nobody else was really making shots until Joe did so late in the game.
  • Josh and some people around him think he takes too much flak from hometown fans. I don’t think that’s always true but it would be in this case if the focus is on his missed Js after had had nearly half his team’s rebounds, more than half of its free throws and played 51 minutes. “I’m tired as a mother[bleeper],” he offered before hitting the showers.
  • Once again the Hawks faced a bad team and, instead of smothering them with defense, went ahead and tried to trade baskets. At least the Nuggets are a good offensive team. There’s little excuse for the way the Cavs came out scoring so easily. “We didn’t come to play in the first quarter and it gave them confidence,” Drew said. “We offered no defensive resistance. They scored at will.”
  • The Hawks picked it up in the second quarter by getting steals and running. Josh started it off with eight straight points on drives or free throws and then Stackhouse (!) kept it going with a flurry of steals, passes, and 3-pointers.
  • The Hawks had a game by then, though. A (rare) good start to the third quarter wasn’t enough to shake the Cavs, and Irving had a lot to do with that.
  • Irving’s talent + Jeff Teague’s typically blase pick-and-roll D + Kirk Hinrich’s declining footspeed=problems for the Hawks.
  • At least Teague had 12 points (6 of 9 FG), seven assists, four steals and just one turnover. Hinrich was 4 of 13 from the field with a couple short misses.
  • Willie Green returned after missing 10 games with back and hamstring injuries. He played 15 minutes. “It felt OK, not great,” he said. “It’s just about continuing to monitor it and hope it continues to get better. I want to continue to get in rhythm.”
  • Drew said Ivan Johnson will return to play against the Nets Friday and Marvin Williams could return: “We hope to get some bodies back.”

Are you talking about the Same Woodson… WHO DID DOUBLE DWIGHT, which allowed them to destroy the Hawks in the second round? You know… the year he got fired. LD was the coach who let Zaza, Al, Collins play him one on one. That’s why the Hawks own Orlando now.

Hope Woody learned his lesson. lol

I think Teague is passive because of Josh, LD, and JJ (last season). Teague can take over a game offensively for short stretches, but I think he’s being pounded on about being a pass first PG. So he hesitates and doesn’t go with his instincts.

He’s definitely more Jason Terry than Jason Kidd, but he’s seems to be a little more prone to the PG position than Jason was. Jet was more like a poor man’s Monta to me.

But you know, coming out of College that was Jeff’s scouting report – more Lou Williams than a pure Point Guard. I think it’s funny sometimes when we get a player, and he is who we knew he was, and then complain about it.

We do it constantly with the Falcons and Matt Ryan. Everybody knew Ryan was a decent QB, but not elite. He was in the same discussion as Flacco and Henne. But he was the most NFL ready. He was a #3 pick, not a 1 or 2. It’s not like anybody expected him to be dominate. He’s an above average NFL QB, good enough to win, but not elite.

And everybody knew this when we drafted him, but now we expect different. Jeff, Matt, Josh, JJ – It is what it is people. Complaining about the obvious isn’t going to change it.

Like Marvin. He stinks in a certain way. #2 draft pick bust – major – explosion – awful. But the same guy get’s picked #25, and we say wow, he’s had a decent NBA career, and has some value. It is what it is people – some need to get over it.

I get this sense that Woody and Larry are not fond of each other? What did Woody think Larry stabbed him the back or something to that affect?

Will Woody throw him the finger?

Naw he’ll probably leave in the starters and try to bury the Hawks by 40? Yup….

Woodson always doubled Dwight because All Star Al could not play straight up man to man defense on Dwight. Dwight was much to physical for All Star Al. He does not have to worry about that with Chandler. Actually I think Zaza has learned a lot for Collins in terms of how to play Dwight head up, which has helped the Hawks have major success against them.

I’m not shocked at Stack playing decent. Grant Hill, Camby and those guys can do it late in a career, why not Stack? And he’s fresh, hasn’t seen the court much this season.

I think a team being fresh for the playoffs this condensed season is going to be very important.

And I think for Woody to keep winning, Amare and ‘Melo gotta stay healthy. That’s the only thing keeping me from buying in to the Knicks – Can those two stay healthy, and can Lin keep going now that the grind is going to be catching up with him. I’ve said from the get go, get back with me last of March, 1st of April, and let’s see how Lin is doing. Average players like Lucas at Chicago are putting up guady numbers, just because they’re fresh in this chaotic, condensed season.

But the condensed schedule has been good for the fans. Less down time between games – keeps interest pretty high.

Overall I give the Hawks a B+. How can I not at 27-20 with a tough schedule and the injuries we’ve had.

Slimjr,

From what I heard, LD backdoored Woody. LD basically went to management and told them that he would be willing to coach the team for much less than what they would have to pay Woodson. Perfect situation for the cost cutting ASG, who refuse to spend money on a coach. That is why he is still the lowest paid head coach in the league. Woody is only interim. He may have been justified in his actions, because if I remember correctly, Drew was trying to leave, and had another job offer, and Woodson blocked him. I don’t think that they are too fond of each other.

But his jump shot was not falling. So hats off to Woody with the adjustment of running pick and rolls and setting screens off the right elbow and with Lin tricky crossovers, the Sixers 1-3-1 zone was breached! Game over!

Nobody predicted that Mattie Ice would not be able to throw the ball over 15 yards. Nobody said that he would be a sitting duck in the pocket, and look like a deer in headlights when pressured. He is slowly becoming Marvin Williams like. Hope he is really in the gym strengthening his arm this offseason, so that the Julio Jones pick does not become a wasted pick. I agree with Dawg, Doc and others who allude that Teague is the whipping boy of the team. He is the youngest, least experienced on the team so he has become the lightning rod for Drew to scapegoat, punk out and yell at. It begs to question; would Drew do Drew II like he do Teague? Or would he support him like this:

Drew: “I told him, ‘Big fella, I’m going to continue to come to you and I have all the confidence in the world in you. You’ve blundered a couple but it doesn’t change the way I feel about you.”

Such an understanding, compassionate and biased coach. Had LD gotten into Zaza’s grill after the Denver loss and held him accountable for his butter fingers, maybe he would have jammed that ball last night.

Joe finally did what he is paid well to do. Time will tell if this translates into clutch shots against playoff competition. Josh Smith had a great game in the paint and his lunch pail on the court – he must step up big like this against our eastern rivals every game, whether that is Garnett, Bosh or Boozer.

SteveW,

Mike Conley’s numbers:
1st year; started 46 of 53 games, averaging 26 mpg.
2nd year; started 60 of 82 games, averaging 31 mpg.
3rd year; started 80 of 80 games, averaging 33 mpg.

Jeff Teague’s numbers:
1st year; started 3 of 71 games, averaging 10 mpg.
2nd year; started 7 of 70 games, averaging 14 mpg.
3rd year; started 47 of 47 so far, averaging 33 mpg.

In addition to the draft positions you mentioned, Teague’s PT first 2 years were erratic at best. So the fact that Teague’s 3rd year is comparable to Conley’s 3rd speaks volumes to how far Teague has come (imo).

Rod, a major problem I see with Ryan and unfortunately this cant be taught is his pocket awareness..He holds onto the ball to long and he’s very hesitant to step up in the pocket like Eli will do in a NewYork minute to get his ball down field with zip.

Ryan moves backwards and throws off his back foot therefore decreasing accuracy and velocity on the ball…He ends up putting to much air under them…

“Your comparison of Jeff Teague to Mike Conley is certainly a valid one. Mike’s 3rd year and Jeff’s 3rd year are extremely close in almost every area – Shooting %, Rebounds, Assists, Scoring, Steals etc.”

I don’t think their playing styles are all that similar, but Conley was considered somewhat of a bust until last year — his 4th year in the league and 3rd as a starter — when the Grizzlies went to the second round. I think some of us forget that Teague only has a half a season worth of starts under his belt. We are complaining about a guy with 47 career regular season starts after he put up 7 dimes, 4 steals, 12 points on 67% shooting against only one turnover in a win. He’s going to be fine.

This isn’t quite true. Mel Kiper said Ryan was the best QB prospect he had ever scouted (that was the exact point that I stopped listening to anything Mel Kiper said). There were a lot of people chewing out the Dolphins for picking Jake Long #1 instead of Ryan. Really until about two months ago the consensus among most NFL writers was that Ryan is already elite, even though the numbers and production clearly stated otherwise. The hype has always been there for him. It’s just the production that has never matched it.

LD’s decision not to foul at the end of the game was frightening. If the Cavs had any idea what they were doing, they would have sat at the half court line and thrown up a high-arching shot as the shot clock expired. By the time the ball would have been rebounded, the game would have been over.

Najeh – I think I vaguely remember Kiper saying that. Most everybody else I read said on a scale of 1-10, Ryan was like an 8 (I’m paraphrasing many reports into 1). So that’s all I’ve ever expected of him. Very good, at least in the regular season. Most NFL ready, check. But not going to be a 9 or 10 in this League, with your Mannings, Bradys, Brees types being 10’s, and some just behind them as 9’s.

Bradford on the other hand, as a consensus stud, really took a step back last season, regardless of injuries and his team. He didn’t look all there.

I think Ryan is a serviceable QB, and can take a team to a Superbowl if he is surrounded by very, very good pieces. But he’s not the type to carry a team to a ‘Bowl it looks to me.

Joe received a ball screen, and for once, came off tight

I’m happy for Woody. And he actually has a team that fits his coaching style. I hope they play Miami or Chicago in the first round though.

As for the Matt Ryan draft, I dont remember Mel Kiper saying he was the best QB he ever scouted, although there was alot of media hype. And in hindsight, the Dolphins still made the wrong decision drafting Jake Long.

Look at where they have drafted since then, and who their QB’s have been.

slim jr,

Ryan has happy feet. And sometimes, he throws the ball alway quickly because he is afraid of getting sacked (or getting hit period). I think he is good enough to help win a SB, but not good enough to lead us to a SB. But then again, how many QBs in the league are? 5?

SteveW

March 22nd, 2012
2:44 pm

I know this is a Hawks blog – but I just don’t think Ryan has much upside left. I think he’ll be at this level, or maybe slightly above for the next 5-8 years barring injury. The reason he can’t rise to the occasion in the playoffs in my opinion is because he’s already playing his max game most of the time in the regular season. There is no gear up for him, unlike Eli, Big Ben and those guys.

Cam on the other hand is a stud, and I could never figure out those guys saying he would be a 2nd round pick and stuff. I just watch football, and am not into it as I am BB, but Cam sure looked like he had all the tools playing at Auburn.

And these two guys coming out this season, Griffin and Luck, look really good also. I think there are some nice young QB’s coming into the League.

And Julio Jones looks like a major stud WR to me. If he had AJ Greens hands, you’d be looking at one of the all time greats. But he’s going to be very good for a long time – maybe Pro Bowl good. Maybe HOF good. He’s a good player.

Lord Jesus, the Matt Ryan haters yapping their traps again.

Guy just had a 4000+ yard/25+ TD season with a crappy o-line. He’s in his fifth year for God’s sakes. Not every QB is a Tom Brady/Aaron Rodgers(technically in the league for 7 years until he won). Most QB takes years to win a Superbowl. Brees, Peyton Manning, Brett Farve… just to name the ones off the top of my head, are examples of this. They weren’t outstanding when they first came into the league. Jesus, give the kid a break. I’m not saying he’s the best thing since thongs(on fit female bodies only), but he can still improve on his game from where he’s at. Give him a chance. Dude has a better win record than most of the QBs in the league–easily top ten in ability, IMO.

Shoot, even the fabulous Vick is still improving his game to this day and is a heck of a lot better than when he played in ATL. I hope that dude gets a Superbowl before he retires, too. I miss that blur of awesomeness.

And, Najeh, please don’t bring Cam Newton into this discussion as being better like you did last time. It just shows you lack of objectivity during the Matt Ryan debate.

Big Lou,

Excuses for Matty Ice huh. His team scored 2 points in the playoffs. There is really nothing else to be said. The line can’t be that bad, Michael Turner, one of the slowest backs in the league, has been one of the most productive backs in the league the past 3 years. Matty Ice gets sacked most of the time because he has zero pocket presence, never steps up in the pocket, and has not developed the skill to move around in the pocket like Brady, and Eli do. He can’t throw a bomb to save his life, and his out routes take forever to reach their destination. Overhyped is what he is. He has great numbers and a good winning percentage because Arthur Blank has surrounded him with a bunch of weapons. Pro bowl running back, pro bowl tight end, pro bowl wide reciever, another stud wide receiver, another 1st round receiver. Imagine if Vick had all those weapons when he was here. We might have a superbowl right now.

Kinda hard to step in the pocket, when the pocket collapses in 2.5 seconds. Watch the replays from last year and you’ll see why he ran outside some plays.

He has better weapons in PHI and hasn’t won one yet because he keeps getting injured. I believe her has the talent, though. Also, I do think he has better accuracy and arm strength. Yet, he’s not the QB for ATL anymore. Living in the past is for the high school QB that never got over his popularity decline once he worked at McDonalds. Our QB is Matt Ryan. He’s not the flashiest or most physical, but he is good at reading defenses and has potential. I’m giving him until the end of this season to write him off.
