Celtics at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
7:07 pm March 19, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Marvin Williams (hip) and Vladimir Radmanovic (back) are out. Jermaine O’Neal (wrist) and Chris Wilcox (heart) are out for the Celtics.
- Willie Green (hamstring) says he will return after missing eight games. Green says he may have sat longer if not for Jannero Pargo being added to Atlanta’s long injury list: “I told that coaches and trainers it’s a matter of getting on the floor. I’m at that 80 percent range but, the fact of the matter is no one on the team is feeling 100 percent. I feel good enough to get out there.”
- Drew said the crowded injury list means he may use Tracy McGrady on the second game of a back-to-back: “Because we are so limited there is a chance we will definitely use him again tonight. We just take it a day at a time.”
- Drew said Pargo is scheduled to return to Atlanta from Cleveland tomorrow after having an appendectomy Sunday. Drew said Pargo will be out two to four weeks.
- Jeff Teague and Kirk Hinrich are Atlanta’s only healthy point guards. Drew said Joe Johnson and McGrady also can fill in.
- Drew on the Celtics: “This is a game that has a lot of meaning. This is our first encounter with Boston this year. I think both teams are looking to make a statement. With them on the long road trip they are on, we are a little depleted but we feel we are a capable team that still has the ability to win. We are going to come out and approach this game with playoff intensity. It’s going to be a physical game, it’s going to be a war. I think this is a statement game. ”
- Green on the Celtics: “Those guys are very good basketball players. You hear things like they are older and not moving as quickly but that’s a team that is getting ready for another playoff run. We have to come in tonight focused with the mindset that we have to play them like they were a few years back going to the Finals.”

Good defense on both ends, but LD’s subs are making this harder.

KG likes playing on the outside, and the Hawks spent the last few minutes guarding him with Zaza, who isn’t very comfortable playing D outside the paint. One of the rare occasions where they may have been better served to go small.

The reason Joe goes off on lesser teams is because they don’t seem to double team him. That’s why he scored so much last night. Joe can get past almost any player in the NBA when he’s not being double teamed.
I think most coaches in the league know to double team Joe Johnson right off the bat.

Every time the Hawks have kept Rondo out of the paint and put a body on Allen, the Celtics have settled for a jumper.

So, all this talk by Willie Green, and I haven’t seen him on the floor once. He’d be a better option than cheeseburger Collins.

This is actually kind of false being that joe doesnt drive the ball he just dribble for a fade shot or attemps a runner in the paint…no post ups

But Hawks don’t have to make it so hard, though. All they gotta to do is keep establishing Josh in the post, and have him kick out to Joe or Kirk.

3 fouls on Pierce. That time Teague flopped to draw the offensive foul. Hawks guards have been good at that this game.

I really don’t mind the Hawks playing this pace. People assume the Celtics are better off playing a slow paced game because they are old, but they are not a good rebounding team (which you need to be if you play slow, so that you can maximize the number of possessions you get) and they don’t get to the line very often. If the Hawks keep Rondo out of the paint and Kirk keeps sticking to Ray Allen, they are just going to shoot jumpers the rest of the game and not collect many of their misses. The Hawks can live with that.

Joe and Al generally have these types of games against playoff teams. Pursue Chris Kaman if he gets a buyout, and if you are serious about advancing in the playoffs.

How can Teague set/establish the tempo when Josh dominates the ball continuously?
