Atlanta Hawks: Celtics 79, Hawks 76

  • This was a typical game of late for the Hawks against good competition. You can’t fault their effort, especially because they were missing three rotation players (not counting Al Horford) and playing the second night of a back-to-back. They didn’t fold when the Celtics took a15-point lead in the fourth quarter and their arena sounded as if they were playing on the road.
  • But you can find plenty not to like about Atlanta’s execution. Or, in the case of Jeff Teague’s 3-point try that missed everything by a good five feet, you can find fault with their failure to finish good opportunities. Josh Smith’s exasperation with that final play spoke volumes.
  • Teague: “I overshot it. I thought I was farther than I was. It happens. I knew they were going to double team Joe [Johnson] and either me or Josh would get a shot. Seeing that there was a big guy flying at me, I just tried to get it up. That caused me to shoot it higher and longer.”
  • Doc Rivers: “Teague got a wide-open shot and we got lucky on that part of it. We wanted to have them dribble it up and foul them once they got to half court. Clearly we didn’t do a good job of that.”
  • Joe’s shot-making display in the fourth quarter wasn’t enough to salvage an awful offensive game for the Hawks. The Celtics remain a top defensive team and the Hawks continue to struggle to score against such opponents.
  • “We have to have good movement,” Joe said. “We have got to make hard cuts. We don’t do that against the good teams that have great defense. It’s going to be tough to score. It was tonight. I look at certain possessions, sometimes we don’t make hard cuts. Against the upper-echelon teams you have to move, cut fast because when you get a little crease and a little crack you have to take advantage of it.”
  • Larry Drew: “Noticeably, we didn’t hold screens. They were really fighting through them, particularly when we were trying to free shooters up like Joe. You have to set the screen and hold the screen. You can’t allow them to come through it. If they come through it, it’s a foul. Particularly in the first half we didn’t do a good job with that that’s why every time Joe caught the ball there was somebody there guarding him.”
  • Joe couldn’t finish some good chances around the basket early. He caught fire from the outside in the fourth quarter but it was too late. He only got 6 shots in the period while Teague missed 4 of 5 and Josh missed all three of his attempts.
  • When he came out for the postgame, Joe looked at the stat sheet and cursed out loud at his seven turnovers. He did have six rebounds and baited Paul Pierce into foul trouble.
  • Josh made his first three jump shots and then didn’t make another. But it looked to me that a good number of those misses were the function of bad offense leading to a low-percentage shot rather than settling by Josh. That doesn’t include his missed 3-point try in the fourth quarter when he was going for the kill shot.
  • Teague had eight points on 13 shots and three assists against two turnovers. Drew spent most of the night barking at him to go get the ball from his teammates and push it when he got it. You see Teague flush on Allen and show some fire and wonder why he can’t be like that more often.
  • Don’t discount the effect that Zaza Pachulia leaving the game had on Atlanta’s offensive stagnation late in the third quarter. It’s not just that Jason Collins offers little offensively, it’s also that Zaza keeps the offense moving in the high post. He had 13 rebounds, four on offense.
  • Kirk Hinrich started off strong defensively while chasing Ray Allen around the typical gauntlet of screens, but then he appeared to get lost when Allen made a pair of 3s during the decisive 17-2 run. “We had a miscommunication on one coverage, and it led to Ray making a couple baskets for them, and the next thing you know they were up 14 points. But we responded and still had a chance. It’s just a tough loss altogether.”
  • Tracy McGrady was drafted to play on the second game of a back-to-back because of all the team’s injuries. He didn’t have much lift in his legs while playing 14 minutes. McGrady couldn’t set up teammates like usual, either.
  • Jerry Stackhouse had a mismatch against Keyon Dooling and took advantage by twice scoring over him with baseline jumpers.
  • Ivan Johnson still has too many uncertain offensive moments.
  • Boston continues to creep up on the Hawks in the East while Atlanta needs to make a run to catch the Magic.
  • Pierce: “We have about 20 games left so this is the stretch run. Every game can put up one spot in the standings is what it seems like these days, so every game is big.”

“This team would win 73-75 games if Al was here to get the rebound.” – Panty-action

DUI, I will give it another try; I guess I [secretly] want your job.

Panty-action, in this lockout-shortened season of 2011-2012, each NBA team is scheduled to play 66 regular season games. If the Hawks ended this regular season with a win-loss record of 66-0 and then went on to win a total of nine [9] playoff games this postseason, those 75 total [regular season and playoff] wins would finally give the Hawks an Eastern Conference Finals [ECF] appearance but would result in an ECF series defeat/elimination of 4-1 [or one win to four losses] to its opponent.

Wow . . why do people continue to make excuses for Josh? If anybody else shot 5 – 20 FG, they would’ve been ripped to shreads. If Josh would’ve shot that terribly, but 75% of his shots came in the paint, people wouldn’t make that big of a deal of it.

But for a guy who wants to be the #1 offensive option on the team, he simply can’t play like he did tonight. He is not a guard. He is our PF. And he needs to mix it up in the paint . . period. No exceptions.

- 0 FT attempts
- 1 offensive rebound
- 7 of 20 shots within 10 feet

Dude simply has to stop being punked all the time, and go to the rim . . or at least hang around the rim to see if he can get some offensive putbacks.

He shouldn’t be given a pass for that shooting performance, despite the rebounds and assists . . no more than JJ should get a pass for waiting until the last 2 minutes of the game to really start making shots.

Coddling baby time is over. Time for these guys to start playing to their strengths and delivering.

Ivan Johnson still has too many uncertain offensive moments

**********************

That means that he fits in well with the rest of his teammates. Because every single player on this team has too many “uncertain offensive moments”

Ivan should be getting ALL of the PF minutes off the bench, and some of the C minutes.

Enough said…

Kevin Garnett, who delivered 16 points and 8 rebounds in 37 minutes, was asked if Teague’s dunk angered the team. “I don’t even know who you are talking about. That guy’s a nobody,’’ he said.

After Teague missed the trey, scores of Boston fans taunted him, and the Celtics ran out the final four seconds to snap a two-game losing streak and even their record at 3-3 on this season-long eight-game road trip.

Our starting PG is a joke…

Did MC really just call the Hawks a “perennial playoff” team? Three years running is a nice stretch but hardly perennial. This team – acknowledging the loss of Horford – will be an easy out for someone in Round 1. That will prompt the feckless ownership to break up the core. We’ll see how “perennial” this playiff run will be.

northcyde,

Josh should have played better. No question about it.

I am only identifying a few important facts:

The Hawks were +6 when he was on the floor in spite of his poor shooting.

You CANNOT disregard 11 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals with just 1 turnover.

Josh’s mental issues – as I believe I identified a few weeks ago – have re-emerged with JJ’s return to form reclaiming main cog status with his excellent shooting.

Josh is envious of backcourt players’ games and when JJ steps up he loses focus on what was going well for him.

Now we need to see if he can revert back to doing the right things or if he will go into a funk again.

Nonetheless, the offense should ALWAYS go through Josh with him getting the rock in the block on ALL possessions.

The game last night was just junk. I thought both teams looked tired. There was never any flow.

Hinrich was awful last night. I am really anxious for him to be gone. He never shows up for games like last night, against good team. It’s too bad Pargo was unavailable for the game. He would have helped when Hinrich was busy falling on his face.

Joe’s turnovers….I’m not sure where I stand. I saw him yell at Zaza twice, after throwing the ball away. It was like Joe was mad at him for not being where Joe thought he should be. I have to side with Joe on that, I think….hard to tell sometimes.

Teague…not sure what his deal is. I liked the attitude after the dunk. However, you have to back it up. The Celtics have tried to bully the Hawks for years. It was nice to see Teague give it back to them. But, then….the Hawks totally wilted. Teague’s 3 at the end just shows he is not ready for Primetime. That was f’ing pathetic. He should take sh#t for that.

Josh played well, I thought. He should have taken Garnett to the hole more. Garnett cannot guard him.

Hawks have to go on a roll now. The schedule is in their favor. Either they take advantage or they will end up at the 7 or 8 seed.

Rick Sund talked to us (season ticket holders) before the game. Nothing really enlightening. He was interesting to listen to, though.

This is why you move Josh to SF when Horford return, Josh would have destroyed Pierce in the paint the hole game.

Why people are bashing Teague, he plays hard every game, one thing Teague had problem with is pushing the ball up and finding open lane, Rondo has to be consider the best defensive guard in the NBA, so people bashing Teague on here has 0percent basketball IQ and should be banned from blog.

Teague played against the best PG defender in the league, JUST DAM.

I did not see the game, so all I have is box score and blog comments. In a game like this, we missed Marvin, Willie (why didnt he play?), and Pargo (imo).

- Teague is not clutch at all. We have seen him both hesitate to take the last shot, or take the last shot, and be way off. Hopefully he will improve
- What’s up with Josh? 3-15 against Cleveland, and 5-20 against Boston.

Vava,

Josh is envious of backcourt players’ games and when JJ steps up he loses focus on what was going well for him..

If that’s the case, whose fault is that? Shouldnt Josh be mentally strong enough to share the load? And it shouldnt matter to Josh who is playing well. Wins should be all that matters.

Hawks cannot afford to fall to #7, which would mean a first round exit against Chicago or Miami.

Assuming they do not shut it down, like they did last season at the end of the year, the Hawks should win at least 12 more games. The schedule finally tilts in their favor. So, I think they should be able to hold off Boston.

Rick Sund told us that the team has complained to the league office about their schedule. The Hawks were the only team that opened with 9 games in 12 days. They are also the only team that had to play 7 games in 10 days (or something like that) more than once. Was probably the most interesting thing he said.

Also, I asked him about using advanced stats in decision making (Sloan Conference stuff). Rick Sund said he is 50-50 on it. He said that stuff has been around for a long time now (since the early/mid 90’s), but seems to just now being getting media attention. He said that when he first arrived in Seattle, the Sonics had just traded two first round picks for an old age center, just because the advanced stats said they should. The center rarely played and was a total bust. Rick Sund pointed out that sometimes, when looking at advanced stats, you have to consider how the player fits on the team they are playing for. That center probably fit his role on his previous team much better than with the Sonics.

Antother thing that come up…media coverage. Someone asked why the local media hardly promotes the Hawks. Rick Sund pointed out that in other cities they have been recently (Cleveand, Scramento) Hawks are praised in those towns. Here in Atlanta, only get ripped.

I agree with that. Read Sam Amico’s blog from Sunday. He’s the Cavs version of Michael Cunningham. He started his blog by saying “The Cavs can’t beat a good team like the Hawks….”. Totally different take.

This frustrates me, too. Very clear that guys like Bradley and Schultz are pulling against the Hawks. Will never be convinced otherwise.

Have to love when Jeff Teague says “It happens” when talking about his airball 3 at the end of the game. I’ve never seen that happen to anyone else. I’ve seen guys miss last second shots. I’ve seen guys airball last second shot. But, I’ve never seen someone miss by a wide open 3 by 15-feet like he did last night. That might be the worst shot I have ever seen in person. It was just f’ing terrible. I am searching for an adjective to discribe how brutal that shot was.

So, Jeff Teague, that shot is not “It happens” worthy. That is a bullsh#t answer. Blindfold me, let me shoot that shot, and I will come closer than he did last night. That was just a complete f’ing debacle of a shot.

You guys are blaming the wrong individuals. The one who are criticizing Teague and Josh didn’t watch the game thoroughly.

Let me enlighten you MC(you must be defending why Ovan wasn’t in) and other fans. After Teague’s dunk on Ray, Momentum was in the Hawk’s favor. That could have demoralized the Celtics completely. Yet, instead of putting the scrappy Ivan, LD puts in cheeseburger Collins. During the time he was on the floor, he created two turnovers(offensive foul and traveling) and missed FOUR FTs. This allowed the Celts to gain confidence and destroy the lead the Hawks had. LD finally put in Ivan, and in his first minutes, he takes a charge and steals the ball. Now tell me, ‘offensive inconsistency’ or not. Do you think Ivan would have missed that easy dunk Collins had when he was fouled? Do you think Ivan would have let easy scores in the basket like Collins did?

That point of the game killed all the momentum ATL had and gave it back to the Celts. Then the starters were put in to bail out LD again. It’s so clear to see that LD is the reason for that loss. The game shouldn’t have even came to that point. He’s cost ATL at least 7 games this year. Why is he still coaching? Lowest paid in the league. You get what you pay for.

That’s my morning vent. Wake me up when the Hawks get a new coach who knows how to sub properly.

COACHING

COACHING

COACHING

All is coaching my friends.

The level of player talent has obviously its highs and lows but on average the talent is reasonably spread out.

It’s on the coaching that there are HUGE differentials.

CHI won in ORL without Rose by a landslide.

That’s COACHING working in favor of CHI and against ORL (SVG’s game plan consists on feeding Howard here and there and shooting threes like there is no tomorrow and that’s it!!!).

People forget If Al, Joe, and Josh are on the court together guess who’s options 1 and 2 Joe and then Al, and third option is Josh. Fourth and fifth are Marvin then Teague.

This is why I don’t like Joe because he’s first option when on a very good team like Chicago he’d be a 3rd option or 4th at best.

It’s not rocket science and as Big Lou says above:

LD is doing the same with Collins that he did with Hinrich: bringing him too soon into the rotation.

Why?

Why not go with Ivan for extended minutes? Why not give a few minutes to Dampier who had a few effective minutes here and there rather than to give them to Collins who has just returned from injury?

Turning point in this game was when Zaza went out to get stitches. LD made the incorrect decision by putting and keeping Collins (a.k.a. Krispy Creme) in the game. In 9:50, Collins made several defensive rotation mistakes, missed 2 shots, fumbled a good pass from JT, missed 4 FT’s and made 2 TOs. We were yelling for LD to take him out of the game and put in Ivan. LD lost this game with his coaching decisions. I agree whole heartly! If all the so-called Gm’s Coaches and fans would/could look at things objectively they would realize that the teams is preforming well considering all the injuries.
Instead they are looking to find the negatives. They choose to try and show how smart thay are and how they can do the job better than the people who has actually been trained to do so.

From hoopinion’s game review;

Josh Smith: There’s not a direct correlation between seven jump shot Josh Smith quarters and 15 point Atlanta Hawks quarters but the two are not unrelated. We can (and should) argue circles about whether the jumpers are indicative or the cause of bad offense but the results are, either way, dispiriting. As was his remonstrating at Tracy McGrady prior to the in-bounds play that ended the third quarter. Once the ball was in play, McGrady wasn’t the one who lost a man who sneakily moved five feet to the left. He made 3-4 jump shots in the first four-and-a-half minutes. Boston let him shoot eight more. He missed them all.

The head coach:
The injuries aren’t his fault and he can’t do anything to change them. Josh Smith’s shot selection isn’t his fault. Joe Johnson’s meandering dribbling isn’t his fault. The difference there is that Larry Drew has proven incapable of instilling change. This team remains perfectly capable of overpowering inferior opposition and folding to the slightest residual competency from a marginal opponent. It’s not a good sign that the Hawks came back only once the game became ragged and desperate.

A thought regarding the opposition:
A shadow of their former selves, the aged Celtics should serve as an object lesson the Hawks as to the dangers of stasis with an expensive core surrounded by fungible spare parts. The Hawks got their core together younger, the Celtics timed their acquisitions perfectly. Without change, neither will end ceremoniously. At least the Celtics got to enjoy three Hall of Famers and a championship out of the journey.

March 20th, 2012

I have been a season ticket holder for 26 years and I’ve never been more upset about a Hawks loss. What infuriates me, and perhaps other Hawks fans, is their inability to win games against the top teams at crunch time. The better opponents turn up the D and find a way to exploit their strengths.

NBA games are often won by 5 or so plays that take only a few seconds. A few examples:

The final play of the third quarter, when the C’s had the ball with 1.2 secs to go, ball out on their sideline. Ray Allen, perhaps the greatest 3 point shooter in NBA history, somehow gets open for an UNCONTESTED shot, which of course he makes, cutting the lead from 4 to 1. After that the C’s shooting seemed to thaw and they seized control.

Early in the 4th, the C’s had the ball out of bounds with 2.3 secs left, throwing the ball in from right in front of the Hawk’s bench. They ran a beautiful pick and roll to Pietrus, who caught a great pass and dunked it.

Jason Collins’ four missed free throws; Hinrich’s 3 turnovers early in the 4th; and poor defensive rotations during the big Celtic run.

These are just reasons why the Hawks seem to never get over the hump.

On the good side: I thought Teague actually had a great game. He completely turned Rondo into a non-factor, penetrated well, and distributed the ball well.

Jon

March 20th, 2012
10:45 am

Teague needs to wake up! This lackadaisical, nonchalant attitude is beyond unbecoming. It is embarrassing for me to even watch his lackluster play. What are we paying you for? Quite standing upright, get down on the balls of your feet, put your hands up and start playing some defense with conviction. On the offensive end try moving (hustling) without the ball instead of standing around. Quit hoisting up more shots after the whistle stops play then you do during the game. I guess it’s easier to shoot when no one is guarding you. The thing that worries me the most is that he doesn’t even move into a good position on the three point line for a kick out pass once he passes the ball inside. Poor coaching, poor playing, whatever the case may be (probably both) snap out of it! You are too skilled of an athlete to take nights or even minutes off during games.

Coach certainly isn’t helping by sticking to his minutes rotations no matter how well guys are playing or by throwing in the towel questionably early in games but gee whiz! Don’t make excuses and don’t give anyone reason to point fingers. Your play alone is what can silence the critics and elevate this team. Be a leader with your voice and your actions!

im tired of the bandwagon fans.. the hawks had a off night down 2 starters and 3 important bench players.. and they are still competing and playing decent…im tired of hearing all the bs from you bloggers… be satisfied with us being 26-20 minus 5 of our players….what other team is severley shortstaffed like us

Life Lession #3012: Always conduct yourself with class.

Teague had a “poster” dunk with Ray Allen being the nearest Celtic, and got a technical foul called for how he behaved afterwards, then shot a 3-point airball with an opportunity to tie the game.

Ray Allen went on a 3-point tare and closing out the 3rd Q and into the 4th, and provided no antics.

I agree the starters should have been in the game starting the 4th Qtr.
