Vivlamore reporting from Philips Arena. Here is my updated game story from Friday’s victory over the Wizards.
One figure was written clearly on the Hawks’ locker room white board. It read simply 53 percent.
That was the only point coach Larry Drew needed to get across to his team during a halftime speech Friday. The Wizards were shooting such a high field-goal percentage – and the Hawks’ defensive effort was clearly the issue.
The Hawks came out with a much-better effort in the second half, erased a six-point deficit, en route to a 102-88 victory over the Wizards at Philips Arena.
“Defensively, we made a stand,” Drew said. “I came in at halftime and that team was shooting over 50 percent against us in the first half. I just told the guys that was ridiculous. … I knew we could be a better defensive team than what we were showing. We just had to make up our mind to go out and guard people and not rely on help. That third quarter we made a strong stand defensively.”
The Hawks held the Wizards to 43 percent shooting in the second half and had 16 of their season-high tying 30 fast-break points in the final two quarters. The Hawks also forced 22 turnovers, including nine by Wizards point guard John Wall.
“It starts with our defense,” Drew said. “We can’t come out thinking we can outscore people. We have to defend and be solid. The first half I thought we gambled [defensively] entirely too much.”
The Hawks didn’t fall victim of a classic trap game – but they came close for awhile.
Home after a six-game road trip, where they went 2-4 including losses in four of the last five games, the Hawks rallied against the lowly Wizards. The didn’t return from the trip until landing in Atlanta at 5 p.m. on Thursday after a cross-country flight.
Joe Johnson led the Hawks (25-19) with a game-high 34 points, tying his season high set two games ago against the Nuggets. He scored 15 first-quarter points, half the Hawks’ total after the first 12 minutes. He was 6-of-7 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Johnson had 18 first-half points. The Hawks are 14-2 when Johnson scores 20 or more points.
“We had great ball movement and I was in the right place at the right time,” Johnson said. “…You can make the first couple, get a couple easy baskets, and the rim just starts to get a little bigger. Tonight was just one of those nights.”
The Hawks also got 23 points, seven rebounds and eight assists from Josh Smith. He tied Dikembe Mutombo for sixth on the Hawks’ all-time offensive rebounds list (1,228). Smith has scored 20 or more points in eight of past nine games.
“We came out a little sluggish,” Smith said. “I don’t know if it’s because we were traveling so much. Normally when you come from the west coast you have a couple of days to recuperate. We had less than 24 hours to recuperate. We came in and probably were a little flat coming in. When we finally found our stride we were able to play some defense in that second half and go away winning.”
Jeff Teague added 14 points and Zaza Pachulia nearly had a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
The Wizards (10-33) led by at the half 54-50 and by as many as six points early in the third quarter. However, the Hawks closed the third on an 18-6 run. Smith scored the first eight points of the third to close the Hawks within two points, 60-58. The Hawks got 3-pointers from Johnson, Kirk Hinrich and Jannero Pargo on the decisive run. They led 71-64 at the end of the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Smith early in the fourth quarter pushed the Hawks lead to 10 points. With 6:17 remaining in the final period they lead was14 points and the rout was on.
“That’s been happening the last three or four games,” Pargo said of the team’s defensive effort. “We have to realize we are not playing the type of defense we are capable of playing.”
The Hawks, who snapped a two-game losing streak, extended their home win streak to eight games over the Wizards, who last won in Philips Arena on Jan. 11, 2008. The Hawks also kept their position of sixth in the Eastern Conference playoff race. A loss to the Wizards, combined with Celtics win over the Kings late Friday, would have dropped the Hawks to seventh, a half-game behind Boston.
The Wizards led at halftime thanks to a 17-4 run midway through the second quarter. The Hawks led by seven points before Shelvin Mack and Roger Mason hit back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite the run. The Wizards capitalized with 15 points off turnovers in the first half.
The Wizards were led by Trevor Booker with 18 points. The Hawks limited Wall, who was a major concern, to 14 points.
The Wizards played short-handed without Nene and Brian Cook, who have yet to join the team after Thursday’s three-team NBA trade deadline deal.
The Hawks, who also defeated the Wizards by 18 points in December, will play in Washington in eight days to conclude the season series.

A lie just dont care how it gets told or miss leads……
The NBA season opened on the 25th of December, Al ruptured a Major muscle on the 13th of Jan 2012. That put the magnitude of Al’s impact at less than 3 weeks on the season where hes averaged 12.4 pts and 7rbs and more turnovers than blocks.
So lets get real. His production has been minimum and bland. He has had zero effect and was easily replaced and Upped by Zaza and Ivan, Johnson.
Al played 11 games this year. NO impact. Period.
This team has much better chemistry with out him and everybody knows and accepts their roles.
Zaza is our center now backed up by Ivan and Dampier.
Josh is our starting powerforward and will not be moved to help Al.

In Al’s 11 games played, he averaged 12.4 pts, 7.0 rebs, shot 55% from the field, and had 16 total turnovers to 14 total blocks.
In Zaza’s 44 games played, he averages 7.3 pts, 7.3 rebs, shot 49% from the field, and has 63 total turnovers to 20 total blocks.
So how is ZaZa by himself better than having Al & ZaZa?
(By the way, comparing blocks & turnovers is just dumb. It tells you absolutely nothing about the quality of player.)

T-s, why did you include me in all of that foolishness on the last blog? I posted ONCE on the blog last night, and that was at 8:02 and then went back to watching the Tourney. When I checked back today, you had used my name and tried to shut down the blog. WTF, man?
I just don’t get it. I have tried (in vain) to be polite to you, despite your attacks on me. You seem to be convinced that I am some blogger named Subtlety, and that I’m a Horford fan instead of a Hawks fan. Once again, I’ll tell you that you are wrong. There is not a player on the Hawks that I would not trade, if it made the team better.
Just stop with the BS, man. If you are a Hawks fan, why on earth would you PURPOSELY make this blog an unpleasant place to be for other Hawks fans? Are we not in this together as fans of the same team? I guess not, because you try to divide fans based on which player they like, never dreaming that MOST fans (unlike you) root for the name on the front of the jersey.
I’m a Hawks fan, not a fan of a certain player. When any Hawk does poorly, I’ll be honest and say so. When they do well, I’ll say so. I don’t understand an agenda that denigrates not only players of the team you SAY you are a fan of, but also any fan who backs that player. Seems silly to me.

Najeh,
“I don’t give a sh-t about offense.”
–Mike Woodson (actual quote).
What I found interesting was from a yahoo sports article vava posted;
For all his flair as a run-and-gun sideline stalker, D’Antoni’s Knicks actually ranked higher defensively this season before his resignation (10th in the NBA in defensive efficiency) than any of the Atlanta Hawks teams coached by the supposed defensive specialist in Woodson..
Is it because Bibby was that bad? Chandler that good?
Also interesting;
These are the rumors, as tossed out by the New York Daily News, and the New York Post. Lin may start for a spell, but the ball is out of his hands as the Knicks slow down to the sort of isolation-heavy offense that Woodson preferred in Atlanta. The Daily News’ Frank Isola is even using well-sourced guesswork as he suggests that Lin could be replaced as a starter by Baron Davis “within two weeks,” though Woodson insists that Lin will remain his starter for now.
Par for the course for a coach that accidentally (and, if we’re fair, indirectly) referred to Lin as a rookie in his meeting with reporters on Thursday. Howard Beck of the New York Times dug even deeper in his take:
“Woody’s inclination would not be to play him,” said a person who has worked with Woodson..
Woody being Woody. Lucky for Lin, Baron is hurt. And somewhere, Teague is laughing.

Funny, articles abound about Woody’s possible impact on a single player while the entire team looks re-born. Sometimes, you have to wonder if the object is individual accomplishment or team success. I’m gglad he is no longer the Hawks coach and I hope he does extremely well in NYC. Always seemed like a super-classy guy.

I’ve been giving JJ a hard time this season, but he has been playing better the last 5 games or so, and even he is making more of his 3-pt shots. One thing that has helped is a lot more of his shots have come in rhythm, especially with the offense going through Josh a lot more.
However, we need JJ to play like he did last night when we go up against teams over .500 (like he played against Denver). Hopefully he has turned a corner. If Josh can continue to do what he has been doing, and JJ plays like he did last night, I like our chances a lot more

I think people assume Woody is a defensive coach because it’s so obvious that he is not an offensive coach. The truth is he’s neither. He’s the NBA’s Herman Edwards. Good at motivating and leading a locker room, but clueless when it comes to Xs and Os and game management. Classy, stand-up guy, yes. Good coach, not even close.

Najeh, Knicks lost 6 games in a row and have led by as many as 30 in the last two contests. I think re-born is an appropriate term. A .500 Hawks team would HAVE to be considered a disappointment, considering that every previous season of winning basketball has been generally considered a disappointment (or irrelevant). So yeah, I’ll hold firm to both statements, thank you.

Last night was a testament of how poorly coached we are.
Josh’s recent development as a decently reliable low post scorer lead to WAS double teaming him, leaving open guys in the perimeter for shots or passes to the free man.
One of the most infuriating quicks about the Hawks has been that our best shooter (JJ) is pounding the ball for 15 seconds on ISO plays who either end up in low percentage shots or outlet passes to worse shooters, most notably Josh who typically ends up with the hot potato deep in the clock.
Double teams in the post are substantially more advantageous for the team playing offense (see ORL and their one trick pony routine of waiting for the double team on Howard to release their 3 point shooters) than double teams in the perimeter.
Outlet passes are easier for many reasons, including the size of the author but also the ability of the recipients.
On the contrary, a perimeter player when double teamed typically has trouble making an advantageous pass out of the double team since double teams are frequently done with quick, agile perimeter players (or with longer players than the ball handler) and any entry passes are bound to be received by players who are less agile and have worse hands.
Basically, IF Josh keeps up at this level and our offense goes primarily inside to him, JJ (and everyone else) will have a much easier life and the Hawks far more chances to succeed.

It wasn’t always good coaching, but he got the job done and had everybody in their place. Problem is he had on offensive system to speak of and the switching on defense made my head spin and tongue wag after a while. It got old and wore on us all. It was time for ole’ boy to bounce.

Najeh,
It seems like the offense is less stagnant with Hinrich starting instead of Marvin. I think having an extra ball handler helps the ball moving on offense. I think we are not losing much on defense b/c Hinrich can guard SGs and Joe can guard SFs effectively.
One more thing having Kirk in starting lineup allows for Joe to concentrate on being a scorer versus trying to create. He’s getting more catch and shoot opportunities with Kirk and Teague in the backcourt.

Best thing to be said in re. Hawks…
- remaining March schedule chock full of below .500 teams…
- after a brutal Feb schedule of contenders (4-9)…
- the Hawks have a slim chance of looking like contenders again..
- Alas, the Hawks play to the level of their competition…
- Instead of closing the gap on conference leaders, expect…
- them to tread water to a slightly better than .500 record for March…
- Amazing how a blow-out of the hapless Washington Generals…
- cant get people so giddy???

Melvin on a blog-roll too. Very astute observations from the upper deck: I’m glad Kirk is still on our team. Kirk is no Jamal, but Jamal is no Kirk either. They each bring different elements to a team.
Speaking of: did Pau and Jamal get moved? If not, why not? If I were the Lakers, I would not have moved Pau … They can still make some noise in this post season.
All you gotta’ do is let the injuries keep piling up and, when the real season starts, every team is 0 – 0. It’s a new day and a new game. A whole ‘nother level!

In the last pre-game blog, LD said he liked the success of bringing Marvin off the bench last year. But if that’s the case, why did it take Marvin getting injured for LD to go back to it?
LD has no clue. And his words and his actions do not match.
najeh,
if it was up to woody, there would have been no Linsanity, because he would have been pulled when he was making all those turnovers early. I think woody is a good assistant coach, and a stand up guy, but a bad hc on offense and defense.

Biggie Lou, butter fingers … Let’s talk dead. I was on the AMC Blogspot today (first time ever) and, the finale show is titled:

I got $50 on it! LOL! The crew is gonna burn them walkers in that barn boy. It’s gonna’ be a Barn Burner! Isn’t it obvious? How else can 8 people annihilate 30 some odd walkers and, survive? I can’t think of another plausible plot, can you? Tomorrow night @ 9PM it’s on like popcorn, Biggie Lou.
I got the hint from when they stacked Herschel’s family in the pick up truck bed and drove them out near the woods and burned the corpses. It was a hint of things to come.
Also, Glenn will rise as the new leader of the group for thE next and 3rd season. Glenn went from a buster to baller when he shot Dale in the head. That was when the power shifted from Rick to Glenn. Rick’s power struggle was with Shane and now Shane is dead. So, it’s Glenn’s turn now and Rick will die next. I also think the suicidal girl will play a huge role in. Getting the walkers in the barn, actually she might be the barn bait … she’s ready to die anyway, besides the only role she’s had, was to feed the live chickens to her family – turned walkers in that barn.
Get your money together … If you don’t hop on board with my plot, you will be sorry. LOL!

Yea, I agree there is not much difference between Al and Zaza stat wise Al makes a couple more baskets and Zaza has a slight advantage in boards. I think the what sets the 2 apart is Zaza is more of a man in that he will fight to defend the basket whereas Al just moves out the way or goes to the perimeter.
Interestingly enough, Al lot of these guys were blaming woodson for Al being on the perimeter, but with teague, we still found Al on the perimeter. I really think Al is allergic to defense.
Back to the comparison. Zaza actually likes to play center owns the position and locks his mind on how to do it effectively. At 6′ 10″250lbs you’d expect Al to embrace the position too. His attitude and work ethics suck and thats why Zaza is a better Center than Al, not because of the statistics. they are virtually about even. we dont ask Zaza to score much because Josh is killing the 4 spot and JJ has moved to the 3 and hes killing it too.
7 – 10 points is all we need from zaza with 8-10 boards. Where he makes his time count is his aggression and assertiveness in the paint. Zaza is the real boss. Al is too soft and doesnt want to play center or defense and always ends up on the perimeter, by choice and abandons the post.
Good Job Zaza.

As I said before, I wont be talking to you so it would be considerate if you and your illusion/ subtlety package would leave me along. But really doesnt bother me how furious about me calling for an Al horford trade.
Good luck to the both of you idiots.

Josh at SF would dominate that position specially in the paint.

Good Point GM-JeJe … They should signed Josh on their own terms like they did Marvin with that player option.
What a dumb GM.
In retrospect, Josh has proved and improved himself so, maybe the contract pushed him. Conversely, Marvin and Horford seemed to relax. You never know how a player will respond, once paid.

drmaryb, inflated one, I agree that you’re correct. I owe you dinner.
Yet, they don’t kill all the walkers, though. There is a huge herd that attacks them, so the manage to kill some in the barn but still more chase after them. They run with the survivors who are left(no I won’t tell you who I think dies–mostly barn characters, though), and eventually have time to discuss the situation about Shane. I think that’s when Rick let’s them know that everyone has the virus. I think that’s what the guy at the CDC told him before they escaped in season one.
That’s my final prediction. I don’t think Rick dies. I don’t think Dale becomes the new leader.
You got it? Let’s see who’s more accurate.

Josh at SF takes him to far away from the basket when he is already dominating at the power forward position. JJ has moved to the SF position Hinrich the 2guard and teague is running point so the correct answer is:
Teague
Hinrich
JJ
Smoove
ZaZa
Why would any one want to take our best power forward our of his position to put in someone else who is not as good.?..not even close.
Thats an Illogical move and its only purpose is to help Al horford have a place on the team. It doesnt make the hawks better. Josh is not just a much better power forward, his is superior to Al. The object is to get better as the owner recently said not to give place to average play.
This teams works fine with out Al. Hed make a good back up to Josh and Zaza.
Josh is the power forward and one of the very best in the league. Leave Josh right where hes at.
