Atlanta Hawks: Hawks trade second-round draft pick for cash

The Hawks, as expected, didn’t make any major trades by today’s 3 p.m. deadline. Instead, they sent a second-round pick to Golden State for cash to help offset their first-ever luxury-tax bill that will be due at season’s end.

Under CBA rules, picks can be sold for up to $3 million but the Hawks will receive much less for their pick since first-round picks routinely sold for $3 million under the old CBA. In addition, under the new CBA there is an annual cap of $3 million on cash involved in trades, further driving down the price of picks.

The Hawks owned two second-round picks after acquiring one from the Suns in the Josh Childress sign-and-trade last summer. The Warriors will receive the lesser of the two picks and, since the Suns likely will finish with a worse record than the Hawks, Atlanta probably will keep that pick.

It was a quiet trade season overall for the Eastern Conference, with only three developments figure to affect the Hawks.

The Magic still will be a factor when the one potential blockbuster fizzled and Dwight Howard (ultimately) chose to to opt in for 2012-13. The Pacers traded a second-round draft pick to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa, who gives them some needed offensive punch. And the Sixers traded Ricky Sanchez to Memphis for Sam Young.

That was it as far as teams currently leading the Hawks in the East. The Bucks were the only other team in position for a playoff spot to make a move, acquiring Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson.

Check back later for a video blog with my thoughts on the Hawks.

Come on, did anyone expect the Hawks to actually try to improve the team? All they’re trying to do is manage the salary situation they got into by overpaying folks like JJ, Marvin and Bibby. Funny how fans saw this coming but Hawks management didn’t.

I hope many of you stay away from Philips because of the actions this management group is taking. That’s the only way retribution can occur.

The ASG has to be the most incompetent group every assembled. Sund and LD are just 2 hangers on who would rat out their mother to keep their position.

well even though we stand pat this time, I feel it had something to do with all the injuries we have had this season, if the team was healthy enough and producing better, other teams would be more interested in trading, especially in horford’s situation, rick sund probably thinks we are on the talent level of chicago bulls and so he feels we are good enough to compete and should only get “healthy” up until the playoffs

I think we can connect the dots that the Hawks were trying to move Kirk without taking back salary or equal salary. They were probably trying to save money in any trade deal that were propose. Like you said, follow the money. Jamal couldn’t go to a team he preferred in a sign and trade deal b/c the Hawks didnt want to take back salary. Josh Chills deals looks even worst now that they sold the pick and didn’t use the TPE they got from Phx for him. ASG thought they could pull the wool over their fans eyes by signing Joe to the max contract alwhile trying to sell the team to get from under the responsiblity of seeing it thru. These owners are over their heads and budget. Sell this team to someone who can afford to run it properly.

I can do bad all by myself. Shout out to Sautee for the word of the day: Ka-Fizzle!

We didn’t even know there was a basement? Old farm houses typically just have the shelter on the outside, like in the Wizard of Oz. I forget what you call those things … A bunker for tornadoes? A canning shed? Anyway … The basement will be something to see next.

I am NOT a movie buff at all, more into reading medical books and watching sports. Mainly because, I always know what gonna’ happen before it does and I find most obvious plots extremely boring and generally fall asleep in cinema theaters or, like In The Passion of Christ … I just walk out after 10 mins, due to the violence. So, this walking dead is special for me, because I’m hooked – which is awfully rare for a “wanna be” know it all like me. LOL

The reason I choose those five is because they all have one thing in common better futures than most other Teams in the NBA.

T’wolves finally got a PG and they have Love plus D-will(Derrick) will be beasting and the only thing they might be missing is a C at the moment a dominant C that is.

OKC nothing to say about them we know why their future is bright.

Dallas Yeah their old, but in this offseason could land Deron and who knows might land Dwight too LOL!

And if you don’t already know this I will make it obvious, even with Al Horford (who should really be playing PF) the Hawks are one of the most undersized teams in the league and have been for a LONG time now. #1 Overall Signing Joe Johnson to that contract should have let him walk

#2 Not getting us a good C in here many were available today so we could finally shut up Al Horford

#3 Signing both Marvina Willaims and Mike Crap Bibby those contracts

#4 Giving away our draft pick last year we lost out on Chris Singleton

#5 Picking Marvin Williams #2 overall and thinking he’s a good player

#6 Did I mention keeping Marvin

#7 Trading away Mo Evans, Mike, Jordan Crawford, and someone else I forgot for just Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Sausage Armstrong.

#8 Rick Sund as a GM

#9 Billy Knight as a GM

#10 The Josh Childress Trade(that whole saga actually)

#11 Darfting Jeff Teague letting him rot on the bench

#12 Not letting Josh be the leader of this team

#13 Naming three captains

#14 Hiring Larry Drew to replace Woodson when we knew how that would turn out

#15 Did I mention Keeping Joe Johnson

#16 Giving away Keith Benson who will at least end up being serviceable.

Melvin, it is hard to trade an expiring contract for another expiring contract. That is what I was hoping would happen, Hinrich for Beasley with some fillers on both sides to make it work. Last year, I was hoping for Jamal for Dalembert. In lieu of addressing the expense side, Sund bailed out the owners by generating revenue via the sold draft pick.

Sorry fellow bloggers, but a GM who is able to maintain the financial ledger isn’t likely to be viewed poorly by his bosses. Again, the best shot at significant change comes when the ASG stop believing (or have clear proof) that 6 home playoff games is no longer possible. And I am fearful that they will simply decide that missing the mark this season was only due to Horford’s injury (along with the 5+ games missed by several other players throughout the season).

Of course, the other possibility with regards to Hinrich is that Willie Green is not coming back anytime soon and they needed to maintain backcourt depth to ensure they make the postseason.

Given LD’s hihly sophisticated offense that never falls short of scoring 20 points in a quarter, maybe they were concerned that too much mid-season change would hurt more than help.

Well, it’s obvious that the ASG could care less how the rest of the season plays out. All they are trying to do at this point is save face and cash (fail).

Can’t believe how inept these owners are. Honestly, trading a draft pick (which I’m 100% certain would be gone by this time next year) for cash because of luxury tax, and for what? STACKHOUSE AND DAMPIER?? Every move this organization makes sets the team back by years.

Guess all we can look forward to is a first round sweep (assuming we make the playoffs). If no playoffs, look for a repeat outcome and team next season with the main reason Sund and LD staying being because of injuries.

I’m curious as to what will happen if we suffer the same fate with injuries next season? The future certainly looks bleak and predictable.

Then believe also in “The Truth”

Given the rapid decline of the 6th seeded Hawks since the All-star break
Given the Hawks “short-sighted” FA additions
Given the surging Celtics and rejuvenated Knicks and Bucks
Given a tighter playoff picture giving hope to the otherwise hopeless teams
Given the “stand still” attitude of mgmt/owner killing the interest of the fan-base

We were all told to expect a cost cutting move, so I can’t act too surprised at this. I would have been a lot more disappointed if the Hawks had salary-dumped a player (Hoopinion thought it might be T-Mac) to get under the tax line. I still look forward to the day when the Hawks have owners who don’t mind spending money and spend it wisely, but dumping a low 2nd round pick for cash is a more efficient use of assets than dumping a productive player to get under the tax line.

Big Lou, it is a reference to LD’s early press clippings when he was introduced as the new head coach and also a reflection of some of the sight-unseen-support that he received on this blog as the clear offensive mastermind this team previously lacked. His 5-man attack is a complex scheme that is difficult to learn and defend. Remember, he held a camp with the players just for the purpose of teaching his revolutionary offense.

I haven’t seen that one, but I will order it on netflix asap. I’d be interested in any other must see films if you have any. I haven’t seen much that has changed my paradigm, (one’s world view) since E.T., Aliens and Color Purple … two of those are Stephen Spilberg’s work. So, I have a lot of catching up to do.

My favorite genre is Sci-Fi and my least favorite is horror. So this, Walking Dead is huge for my obsessive compulsive personality. I got OCD and ADHD coupled with a type “A” issues by the grace of God. Not much I can do about that, so I refuse synthetic man made drugs to treat … instead i embrace it and try to use my flaws to my advantage. So far, so good. LOL

northcyde,

My issue is how do you give JJ one of the richest contracts in the League, and then sit on your hands? Is JJ’s contract really worth 2 home playoff games (JJ gets us 2 home games in the second round imo)

***********************

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Pay him like a superstar, but choose not to build the team around him.

They’re so committed to these “core” group of guys, that they may not even understand that you may have to trade one of them, to make us better. Even if you trade for something slightly less ( or for multiple good players ), it may make the team better.

And smh @ a Hawk ticket rep calling me today, asking me about my experience at Philips Arena. I like Philips. The arena or in-game experience isn’t the problem. The inconsistency of the team is. But I’ll still go to the games if I’m in the ATL area. Knicks game is sold out, but I’ll probably be there anyway.

I’m not the type of fan to worry about. It’s those other fans that want you guys to do something significant, but refuse to do to, so you are in danger of losing them.

Don’t know why u Hawks fans are tripping. Hawks do this every year. They make trades at odd times, when people least expect it.

And I also told you folks Hawks will not trade Josh this season, even if he asked for it. And I’m glad they didn’t. Don’t see anything good out there.

Been a Hawks fan for years, but I’ve only been to one game. Shame on me! Why, though?

Before I spend free money like that, I have to know that I am getting my money’s worth. I ain’t got it like that to be blowing bucks on a Hawks team that is almost destined to lose. So I watch from my tv, post on their blog, send support from my posts and blogs, and hope they get it right enough to win a championship. If they ever get it right, then I will attend more games.

Right now, the ASG is not committed to winning a championship, they just happy being a “good” team making the playoffs. So they sell picks, and try to stay under the cap. Can someone tell me the last team that won a championship while under the cap? So anybody going crazy Hawks did not do a trade this year is nuts, unless they are season tickets holders, and even those should know better.

There are very few superstars in this league, and Hawks have none of them, and little chance of getting one. Josh might turn out to be one. That is why I do not appreciate the Hawks even thinking about trading him. Sometimes, no trade is better than a trade. How about we wait till the Hawks get completely healthy, maybe playoff time, before we pass judgement? Because I think they have a better squad this year than they have had in a long time.

I am as frustrated as every fan out there, but I have learned to treat the Hawks with a grain of salt, take them as they are, for what they are and not get overly emotional. I view every big game like the Hawks are gonna lose. So when they do, I am not devastated, and if they win, I am giddy with joy.

Hawks are a Jerkill and Hyde team for now, and fans just have to realise that, deal with it, and not go nuts when Hawks lose a game, don’t get a high profile coach, or make a trade at the deadline. Deal with it. The ASG is a cheap organization. Don’t expect anything great from them.

Goodnight, folks.

I’ve been to about 20 – 25 games the past 3.5 years ( including playoffs ), and the Hawks maybe lost 6 of those games. Thank God I’ve never had to sit through one of those 30+ point blowouts at Philips. They normally win when I watch them live.

Go to tomorrow night’s game vs the Wizards. That should be one of the cheapest tickets of the year, and you should be able to see the Hawks win.

Expect Josh to join the Brooklyn Nets to start the ‘12/’13 season. No D12 means the Russian’s got a huge need for someone who can be paired with Deron to create a bit of excitement in the new arena on the opposite side of the Brooklyn Bridge. As we approach the draft, look for the Nets to offer the Chump (Sund) one of their two lottery picks and a filler for Smoove.

1) I agree. That organist tries to play rap songs on the organ, but it just sounds lame as hell. You would think in a city that is pretty much the epicenter of hip-hop these days, that they would definitely play more rap, or even reach out more to those stars to help promote the Hawks. But they do neither.

2) LOL @ that collection of centers. Also . . R.I.P. Jason Collier.

3) I like sitting in the 200 sections behind the goals. Section 201 or 207 used to be great seats to see the game AND see the stat scoreboard. But those are just regular seats now. I did buy a club level seat for the Philly game off the street for $50 right after tip-off ( normally $114 ).

4) Fine azz women at Philips ( especially in the club section ). And if you don’t think those South American chicks don’t have the same agenda as some of the American groupies, I got some beachfront property to sell you in Bankhead. Horford’s new wife knew EXACTLY what she needed to do to get Al.

5) The Bulls just beat us. After Teague went down, that was it. Because Jamal DEFINITELY wasn’t about to keep us in the game, with the way he shot after Game 1 of that series. Bulls were just too powerful.

Like I told Blast . . . the Hawks are not a bad home ticket. Not as good as they used to be, but not a bad ticket at all. Very nice arena. Decent food. Just have to hope the right Hawks team shows up.

@ Rick Sund
Hey, I do understand the signing of Joe Johnson in this past off season. At that time he was all we had in terms of a Superstar. I think that the best thing at this point is to first of all….make sure that Josh stays in Atlanta. I don’t know if you realize this or not, but with Joe’s knees starting to give him problems, he’ll continue to miss games. I think you should get with Josh and try to get him to bring Dwight back home. You can use that as a marketing tool. ATL BOYZ or something. Now if you really want to put our team in the Elite class it starts there. Then you really have to push hard for Josh to be selected as an All Star. His numbers state than he is an All Star. As far as Joe is concerned, you need to use the newly approved AMNESTY CLAUSE. That is the only way we can take the cuffs off of us. Now if Joe is thinking of winning a Championship in ATL, “RESTRUCTURE MAN”. If you want to , feel free to give me a call sir. I really want to discuss this with you. OFF:(706) 563-6513…..HM: (706) 989-9950 Cell: (762) 822-8299 Cell 2: (706) 681-4767. I know you are a busy man, but it’s imperative that we speak sir. Don’t find it funny that Dwight gave up his opt out clause, at the same time Josh Smith started wanting out of Atlanta to compete for a championship.

Since Dwight does not want to go to Atlanta and possibly NJ, he has given management until the start of the 2013 season to bring in talent. Orlando can pay him more money, they sign Josh who wants out to play with Dwight & Deron Williams will probably opt out of NJ since they have not gotten him any surrounding talent.

It was a pipe dream because it’s the worst contract in professional sports and nobody is going to take it on. If we could have dumped Joe, we could be in a position to go after Dwight in 2013 when his deal expires. As it stands, we will have our top 6 players under contract for one more season. After next season, Josh will be an unrestricted free agent and will likely sign elsewhere. Zaza will be an unrestricted free agent and will likely sign elsewhere. A season and a half from now Joe won’t be half the player he is now. The Hawks already have to switch on picks for him because he can’t get around them. End of 2012-13 it will probably be time to Amnesty Joe and perform a complete rebuild… the long awaited KABOOM!

Furthermore, not only will we not be in a position to go after Dwight when his current deal runs out, ORL will have sufficient cap space to make an offer to unrestricted free agent Josh Smith. If we had traded Joe to ORL, they would not have been in a position to try to sign Josh as a free agent after next season. Has anybody noticed the Josh and Dwight both have deals that expire in Summer, 2013? Anybody paying attention?

IMO, going in to the offseason with these 6 contracts in place (Teague, Joe, Marvin, Josh, Al, and ZaZa), it pretty much guarantees that Josh will be traded before the draft, and we will not receive equal value. We won’t receive equal value because part of the value we’ll be looking for is for the other team to absorb some salary with their cap space. Look for something like Josh for a top 10 pick. I’m still betting on New Jersey, who could be willing to play Wallace and Smith at the forward spots next to Lopez.

“We won’t receive equal value because part of the value we’ll be looking for is for the other team to absorb some salary with their cap space.” – Just Joe

Whose contract do you think they’ll be asking another team to absorb? The roster next year will be those six players plus hopefully Ivan Johnson signed to an affordable, multi-year contract with the roster filled out by minimum salary scrubs. The only current Hawks I hope to see back beyond Teague, Joe, Josh, Al, Marv, Zaza and Ivan is Pargo and Greene. Kirk will find a better deal somewhere else and Greene is more productive.

So which salary? The only salaries you want to get rid of out of those 7 players are Joe and Marv, and nobody is taking either one.

What I think the Hawks should do next year is try to go a whole year with few injuries, hopefully with a brilliant draft pick that makes the rotation and gives the Hawks 8 players. Give Sund a chance to find another Ivan in the off-season. Then take that lineup and let it go as far as it can.

Next year if Al is healthy, I expect it to be both the culmination and the swan song of the current Hawks iteration. I think we can do real damage. They paid Joe all this money… don’t trade Josh. Let it play out for a final season (preferably with Nate McMillan as coach). Maybe the Hawks break through and make the ECF. We’ve beating Miami, Chicago and Oklahoma City in impressive fashion this year. Maybe Josh has so much fun in the process he decides to say.

But you will never get equal value for Josh unless you get a first, second or third-team All-NBA player (or possibly a top-3 draft pick) in return.

No Trades Clause!

I didn’t know Sund had a NO trades clause in his contract, but apparently he does. Even with a noose around Sund’s neck, he could have done something to sprinkle a little hope into THIS roster. Instead he as told to “get money”

So, theoretically, I can’t put all the blame on him. What I can do is question Sund’s creativity and persistence. IMHO, Sund could have gotten Kaman for a 2nd round pick and a get that TPE to make up the difference for the future.

Our Bigs are down, sans zaza. Zaza is not that go to guy in the paint as we saw in Denver. Zaza will never see a better opportunity to put the ball in the hole than that one. If there was any time to dunk the ball – that was it. Even if he missed, he may have gotten a trip to the line to tie it or wint it and, zaza is a decent FT shooter.

So, any old big would have made us happy. Apparently, Camby was available as well.

I know Nene must be syeaming mad to go to the Wizards of all places. Nene should have walked away from Denver right after Melo had, instead he showed loyalty and was traded anyways.

Howeve, John Wall is doing The Dougie now. Wall finally has a big man to play off of, it may be the best trade of the day in DC. Congrats to those guys in DC.

Meanwhile, the Hawks get richer under the guise of Vulture Capitalism.

Someone earlier pointed out about all the centers the Hawks have had since Mutombo and it has been a pathetic effort over the years by management.

Personally, IMO, when you take over a franchise, the first thing or place you start is down low and build around it. Its like building a house, first you get a foundation then build around it.

The Hawks for some reason have been building, but with no foundation. A bunch of 6-8 and 6-9 guys and guards. What i have noticed about this team as constructed, they dont have a big guy that can actually handle(not dribble), just handle a pass down low. Al is a guy, but (we all know he is not big enough), Zaza is the clumsiest guy i have ever seen come out of Europe!

After that, they have no one else and it absolutely baffles me that management continues to NOT do anything to get this team closer to where they should be.

And after looking at the moves made yesterday, im surely convinced management does not care about the winning product, just pocket that money!!!

From the NY Knicks ESPN forum:

Looks like the only “geniuses” here are Linsanity bandwagon fans like you.

Let’s get this straight, D’Antoni’s system has really, really erratic field goal attempts.

When there’s erratic shooting, the team can’t get back to the basket quick enough to get settled defensively. That leads to TONS of holes in the defense, and lots of fast breaks by the opposing team.

Under Woodson’s new system, the PGs are going to play slow paced offensive ball, passing to an open scorer who will predictably make a shot and give the team time to transition to defense.

This will cause the Knicks to give up less than 100 freaking points a game, giving them at least a CHANCE at winning, unlike in D’Antoni’s system once the team hit the road.

Man i forgot all about that. Just so spun up and fed up with Sund and ASG. Forgot the damage done previously!

Just waiting for another 2nd round knock out. And then Sund will say, “All we need to do is rest this off-season and get healthy.”

I see why the Cowboys,Steelers,Lakers,Celtics,Yankees and Red Sox have fans all over the world. It really clicked most of these fans just picked those teams up because of their home teams being pitiful. The problem is the business side of sports in some owners minds outweigh what their customers needs and wants are. Most franchise owners dont care and the end of the day its about profits. Its business to them! Just so happen this business has an emotional attachment to their customers. For instance, buying orange juice from Kroger is not a emotional attachment. But look at the effort put forth by Kroger to get you to buy it. Sports franchises dont have to advertise their product is in the hearts and minds of their fans. I guess Im in the wrong business. :(

Mr. Woodson is extremely effective at getting the most from the talent he has. He will gang rebound on every play and will drain all the talent Melo has to offer in Iso-Sets.

Melo will be happy. Mike will also get Melo to play great defense. Many of you forget the sticky-icky Melo put on Kobe when they made their WCF title run. Melo CAN play defense when he wants to – he really can.

Lin-Sanity may not go off as much because, Mike will play a half court game and only run fast breaks when it’s there and when it come out of the defensive opportunities.

The Knicks will see measured and the best basketball they can play. Unlike in Atlanta, Woodson has all the pieces and no gaping holes to fill, coupled with a willing to spend owner. He is a great fit there. Also, Woodson runs a very tight ship and does not bevy to horse play I’m the locker rooms and practice. It’s all business with this guy.

Mike Woodson is the “Madea” of coaches. Good Luck Mike!

O’Brien . . . maybe they could get creative, and give a couple of these artists working for the Hawks free tix to some of the marquee games. I mean, they not only have a lot of hip-hop stars in ATL, a lot of Black actors/actresses live in metro ATL as well.

The team just fails miserably in the marketing department, if you ask me. They don’t even use their players right when it comes to marketing.

It’s like tonight. After the game, they have a Christian pop artist performing in concert named Shonlock. Now I’m familiar with a few Christian artists, but I’ve never heard of this cat. Maybe that’s my ignorance of the genre though.

Just by doing some research, Shonlock had a song that topped the Christian charts for 7 weeks last year, so he is well known amongst Christian pop music fans. And he does live in Atlanta.

My question is this. Even for a Wizards game, how many fans of Shonlock are going to Philips tonight? A better question may be how much are they playing Shonlock to perform tonight? How many will stick around after the game just to see him?

If a one-hit secular rap artist can charge around $10,000 per show, how much is the ASG paying Shonlock to perform tonight?

If you’re going to have a Christian artist perform, why not secure a bigger name that could possibly bring in more people? Bring in a Stephen Curtis Chapman, or a Newsboys . . . or even a Christian hip-hop artist like Lecrae ( who is the Christian rap equivalent of T.I. these days, in terms of popularity, and has Youtube video views in the millions ).

To me, it just illustrates the minimalist thinking of this ownership group. They do the BARE MINIMUM in almost everything ( except when they re-signed JJ ). They just need to be smarter, market more aggressively, and not be afraid to take risks in trying to make this team better.

Like Josh said, they don’t even market their All Stars in this town. No one wants to play here except for the money at the end of a career. Bench warming makes for a nice living. Traveling, hotels and hotties are pretty nice perks.

i love the hawks, we really need a superstar. why don’t Joe drive to the basket more, in order to get to the line. getting easy points from the line would allow our players to get some rest and be able to finish games. this should be our focus since we’re stuck with the players we have!!!

Big Lou

I think Joe Johnson avoids driving to the basket because that’s not his game. He is more ‘finesse floaters’ type of guy. He used to be more aggressive, until he got injured for driving to the basket in the Suns playoff game and got shafted in the off season.

The core….. The Nuggets over the last couple of years have been a very good team, but “the core” is gone! They have won over 50 games over the last four seasons and have not had a losing season since 02-03 season. They also went all the way to the Western Conference Finals. Yet the “core” – Nene, Anthony,Felton, Billups, JR Smith, Martin – ALL GONE!!!

I don’t believe in “KA BOOM” – but change had to be made (and I don’t mean LD for Woody). Marvin – don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you; T-Mac, Stack, Collins, Damp – Peace and Chicken grease! ( Give me four projects). There are guys around the league we could have that make the opposing team miserable (did you see what Mo did to us Wed).

The Hawks could have had several guys in here to ’shake it up’. Yet, they stick with the core. Start at the top with Rick Sund and keep the ax swinging until it gets to the last man on the bench!

I began checking out on this team when management revealed a deaf ear to Horford and Smoove’s comments and demands to acquire a decent #1. It was obvious to everyone the Hawks where knocking on the door of the elite class and just needed to add a couple of pieces to rise up. Over the past 2 1/2 yrs we have seen a succession of big men Nene, Bosh, Wilcox, Gasol, Howard, etc and now Bogut and Nene again become available on trades or free agency, but no Hawks moves. Why?

Whatever……My checkout is almost complete. Good job Atlanta Spirit.

The only way Atlanta will have a good team is for the Hawks to leave and another owner move his team here. I knew the Hawks were in trouble when it took half dozen owners to buy the team. It’s like having five wives. Five makeups, five hairsprays, five eye shadows and five periods.

The Hawks get Carmelo for Joe. Even swap. Josh gets to stay in Atlanta and the Knicks fans who are frustrated with Melo get Joe. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4ubaes3

Let’s face it: Josh Smith is the face of this Hawks franchise whether fans like it or not. LD has to take a back seat in whatever Josh wants to do. Josh has the green light for A. Bringing the ball up court B. Taking any shots C. Etc. Somehow, can you blame him? Realistically speaking, the Hawks would have no offense without going through Josh. Joe may be second, but he’s got weak knees and he doesn’t have the strength as a small forward-which he seems to be playing in the current offensive rotation. Lately, the Hawks are marketing Josh’s profile-to sell tickets to the Phillips. Hawks management knows how fans feel about Joe’s contract and are feverishly marketing Josh. No, they really don’t want Josh to go, mean mug and all. Josh is probably their biggest prized possession at this time as there will ever be. They would have to get a similar prized player or blockbuster deal-to rid them of Josh’s magnitude. So there we have it; no deals except minor ones-as least the Hawks Sund was honest when he said that they weren’t going to make any major moves. They gave up a second round pick for cash. The Hawks know they messed up when they re-signed on Joes contract, and they seem like they’re still trying to clean that up; they’re gearing up for more money to be had for the restructuring of Josh’s contract. At this point-they know that players are concerned with the money and that Josh will more than likely-accept a matching offer from the Hawks-to counter an offer from other teams looking to aquire Josh. The difference is that-most fans know what Josh brings to the table: why I of a sudden do you think that Josh is playing his balls out game after game? He’s jocking (interviewing) and displaying his real-time resume-that’s seen night after night by ALL teams coaches and management in the NBA. Why haven’t we seen this type of play by Josh years ago? Viola, the answer is obvious; we all know that NBA players seem to go harder toward and at the end of their contract in order to parlay more money for their financial future=s-m-a-r-t. Look at what happen to iso-Joe (not his fault being called iso-Joe; LD is obviously-to blame); Joes numbers started to slip AFTER he got all his money. In Josh’s mind he knows that the Hawks will pay him whatever he asks. Josh knows he’s a better player than Joe, and look what the Hawks paid him. Will that happen to Josh-WHEN he gets his new contract with the Hawks?-probably so. What does this say to other teams who covet him and may want to sign him? To me, it says that if Josh will turn down the money that the Hawks will offer him through free agency-and let’s say he signs with another team-who he knows can or will be a serious contender and Josh likes the coach, team, management, big time sports city, etc., then Josh may turn down the Hawks money and sign with another team.

I was a casual Hawks fan, and a season ticket holder for 5 years. That year when the took Boston to a game 7 was terrific. The crowd was electric and even though we lost, there was a sense of the best was yet to come. Sadly, that was the best. I would suggest blowing the team up and starting over, but Jill Johnson’s contract makes that impossible. The kid is good but has 0 heart. They Hawks should of at least let him get an offer from another team before maxing him out. Who else would have given him that???

Didn’t the Hawks lose a couple million dollars the year we lost to Boston in 7. Josh was the most exciting player in recent history and he wants out. Coach Woodson is a much better coach than his record. The first 2 or 3 years in Atlanta, he nor no one else would have won with those guys, The core group of players still had college eligibility. He took those young players and molded them to 50 plus wins and 2 round play-off spots. The players quit on him so he had to go. I would have rather the players that quit be gone, but oh well. Now that Coach Woodson is coach of the Knicks, no way will they trade Melo for Joe. Joe was D’antoni’s man I bet Coach Woodson would rather have Melo.

Here’s an idea that would certainly improve the Hawks. A bunch of the blogging fans on the AJC pool their resources, form a “Real Atlanta Spirit” group, buy the team, spend their money to build a team and win championships back to back to back! TMACfan volunteers to be general manager. He would do a way better job by his own admission. Davenpoop could be our coach. He is probably the knowledgeable poster here. Sonny Clusters could add his touch of reality humor. So many could make a difference. It’s not unheard of in professional sports for locals to own a team. Why not, we all have better and bitter ideas on how to run the Hawks….Far superior ideas for spending the other guys moiney…What do you say. Let’s Go Hawks Gang!

You know what’s so funny the NCAA last night was better than anything the NBA put up all season long.

Lehigh over Duke and Norfolk St(representing the HBCU who in reality no one ever thinks to advance anywhere), and Ohio over Michigan. USF over Temple man it’s going to be a wild March Madness.

Telling ya’ll right now the #1 seeds besides maybe Michigan St. and Kentucky have a good bit to be worried about.

Syracuse is not going to the Final 4 that’s for sure UNC might sneak into the sweet 16, but their run might not last either.

Josh Smith to NJ Nets for Brooke Lopez, and Deron Williams,

1. Josh Smith is THE person on the team you can’t just trade him for D-will and Brook Lopez you could get way more than that.

2. Deron Williams is opting out of the NJ contract he is probably going to Dallas it is a done deal.

3. Washington has Jordan Crawford seem committed to him that was just our stupid thinking

4. We are stuck with Joe Johnson point blank.

5. Why give up on Jeff Teague he’s much quicker than Deron Williams. Doesn’t have that scoring punch/assist ability down yet, but he’s getting there.
