The Hawks, as expected, didn’t make any major trades by today’s 3 p.m. deadline. Instead, they sent a second-round pick to Golden State for cash to help offset their first-ever luxury-tax bill that will be due at season’s end.
Under CBA rules, picks can be sold for up to $3 million but the Hawks will receive much less for their pick since first-round picks routinely sold for $3 million under the old CBA. In addition, under the new CBA there is an annual cap of $3 million on cash involved in trades, further driving down the price of picks.
The Hawks owned two second-round picks after acquiring one from the Suns in the Josh Childress sign-and-trade last summer. The Warriors will receive the lesser of the two picks and, since the Suns likely will finish with a worse record than the Hawks, Atlanta probably will keep that pick.
It was a quiet trade season overall for the Eastern Conference, with only three developments figure to affect the Hawks.
The Magic still will be a factor when the one potential blockbuster fizzled and Dwight Howard (ultimately) chose to to opt in for 2012-13. The Pacers traded a second-round draft pick to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa, who gives them some needed offensive punch. And the Sixers traded Ricky Sanchez to Memphis for Sam Young.
That was it as far as teams currently leading the Hawks in the East. The Bucks were the only other team in position for a playoff spot to make a move, acquiring Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson.
Check back later for a video blog with my thoughts on the Hawks.

Big Lou,
Man i forgot all about that. Just so spun up and fed up with Sund and ASG. Forgot the damage done previously!
Just waiting for another 2nd round knock out. And then Sund will say, “All we need to do is rest this off-season and get healthy.”

I see why the Cowboys,Steelers,Lakers,Celtics,Yankees and Red Sox have fans all over the world. It really clicked most of these fans just picked those teams up because of their home teams being pitiful. The problem is the business side of sports in some owners minds outweigh what their customers needs and wants are. Most franchise owners dont care and the end of the day its about profits. Its business to them! Just so happen this business has an emotional attachment to their customers. For instance, buying orange juice from Kroger is not a emotional attachment. But look at the effort put forth by Kroger to get you to buy it. Sports franchises dont have to advertise their product is in the hearts and minds of their fans. I guess Im in the wrong business.

Mr. Woodson is extremely effective at getting the most from the talent he has. He will gang rebound on every play and will drain all the talent Melo has to offer in Iso-Sets.
Melo will be happy. Mike will also get Melo to play great defense. Many of you forget the sticky-icky Melo put on Kobe when they made their WCF title run. Melo CAN play defense when he wants to – he really can.
Lin-Sanity may not go off as much because, Mike will play a half court game and only run fast breaks when it’s there and when it come out of the defensive opportunities.
The Knicks will see measured and the best basketball they can play. Unlike in Atlanta, Woodson has all the pieces and no gaping holes to fill, coupled with a willing to spend owner. He is a great fit there. Also, Woodson runs a very tight ship and does not bevy to horse play I’m the locker rooms and practice. It’s all business with this guy.
Mike Woodson is the “Madea” of coaches. Good Luck Mike!

O’Brien . . . maybe they could get creative, and give a couple of these artists working for the Hawks free tix to some of the marquee games. I mean, they not only have a lot of hip-hop stars in ATL, a lot of Black actors/actresses live in metro ATL as well.
The team just fails miserably in the marketing department, if you ask me. They don’t even use their players right when it comes to marketing.
It’s like tonight. After the game, they have a Christian pop artist performing in concert named Shonlock. Now I’m familiar with a few Christian artists, but I’ve never heard of this cat. Maybe that’s my ignorance of the genre though.
Just by doing some research, Shonlock had a song that topped the Christian charts for 7 weeks last year, so he is well known amongst Christian pop music fans. And he does live in Atlanta.
My question is this. Even for a Wizards game, how many fans of Shonlock are going to Philips tonight? A better question may be how much are they playing Shonlock to perform tonight? How many will stick around after the game just to see him?
If a one-hit secular rap artist can charge around $10,000 per show, how much is the ASG paying Shonlock to perform tonight?
If you’re going to have a Christian artist perform, why not secure a bigger name that could possibly bring in more people? Bring in a Stephen Curtis Chapman, or a Newsboys . . . or even a Christian hip-hop artist like Lecrae ( who is the Christian rap equivalent of T.I. these days, in terms of popularity, and has Youtube video views in the millions ).
To me, it just illustrates the minimalist thinking of this ownership group. They do the BARE MINIMUM in almost everything ( except when they re-signed JJ ). They just need to be smarter, market more aggressively, and not be afraid to take risks in trying to make this team better.

Norty-Cyde! You and I have been the marketing drums for years – yet, we get nothing from the lame duck: arthur Triche.
Like Josh said, they don’t even market their All Stars in this town. No one wants to play here except for the money at the end of a career. Bench warming makes for a nice living. Traveling, hotels and hotties are pretty nice perks.

i love the hawks, we really need a superstar. why don’t Joe drive to the basket more, in order to get to the line. getting easy points from the line would allow our players to get some rest and be able to finish games. this should be our focus since we’re stuck with the players we have!!!

I think Joe Johnson avoids driving to the basket because that’s not his game. He is more ‘finesse floaters’ type of guy. He used to be more aggressive, until he got injured for driving to the basket in the Suns playoff game and got shafted in the off season.

I’ve yet to really see Josh, Al, or Joe, even Teague of all people be advertised like that. One reason the national media stations disrespect the hawks so bad they don’t know who they are. Some know who Josh Smith is, but just barely.

The core….. The Nuggets over the last couple of years have been a very good team, but “the core” is gone! They have won over 50 games over the last four seasons and have not had a losing season since 02-03 season. They also went all the way to the Western Conference Finals. Yet the “core” – Nene, Anthony,Felton, Billups, JR Smith, Martin – ALL GONE!!!
I don’t believe in “KA BOOM” – but change had to be made (and I don’t mean LD for Woody). Marvin – don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you; T-Mac, Stack, Collins, Damp – Peace and Chicken grease! ( Give me four projects). There are guys around the league we could have that make the opposing team miserable (did you see what Mo did to us Wed).
The Hawks could have had several guys in here to ’shake it up’. Yet, they stick with the core. Start at the top with Rick Sund and keep the ax swinging until it gets to the last man on the bench!

I began checking out on this team when management revealed a deaf ear to Horford and Smoove’s comments and demands to acquire a decent #1. It was obvious to everyone the Hawks where knocking on the door of the elite class and just needed to add a couple of pieces to rise up. Over the past 2 1/2 yrs we have seen a succession of big men Nene, Bosh, Wilcox, Gasol, Howard, etc and now Bogut and Nene again become available on trades or free agency, but no Hawks moves. Why?
Whatever……My checkout is almost complete. Good job Atlanta Spirit.

The only way Atlanta will have a good team is for the Hawks to leave and another owner move his team here. I knew the Hawks were in trouble when it took half dozen owners to buy the team. It’s like having five wives. Five makeups, five hairsprays, five eye shadows and five periods.

The Hawks get Carmelo for Joe. Even swap. Josh gets to stay in Atlanta and the Knicks fans who are frustrated with Melo get Joe. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4ubaes3
Let’s face it: Josh Smith is the face of this Hawks franchise whether fans like it or not. LD has to take a back seat in whatever Josh wants to do. Josh has the green light for A. Bringing the ball up court B. Taking any shots C. Etc. Somehow, can you blame him? Realistically speaking, the Hawks would have no offense without going through Josh. Joe may be second, but he’s got weak knees and he doesn’t have the strength as a small forward-which he seems to be playing in the current offensive rotation. Lately, the Hawks are marketing Josh’s profile-to sell tickets to the Phillips. Hawks management knows how fans feel about Joe’s contract and are feverishly marketing Josh. No, they really don’t want Josh to go, mean mug and all. Josh is probably their biggest prized possession at this time as there will ever be. They would have to get a similar prized player or blockbuster deal-to rid them of Josh’s magnitude. So there we have it; no deals except minor ones-as least the Hawks Sund was honest when he said that they weren’t going to make any major moves. They gave up a second round pick for cash. The Hawks know they messed up when they re-signed on Joes contract, and they seem like they’re still trying to clean that up; they’re gearing up for more money to be had for the restructuring of Josh’s contract. At this point-they know that players are concerned with the money and that Josh will more than likely-accept a matching offer from the Hawks-to counter an offer from other teams looking to aquire Josh. The difference is that-most fans know what Josh brings to the table: why I of a sudden do you think that Josh is playing his balls out game after game? He’s jocking (interviewing) and displaying his real-time resume-that’s seen night after night by ALL teams coaches and management in the NBA. Why haven’t we seen this type of play by Josh years ago? Viola, the answer is obvious; we all know that NBA players seem to go harder toward and at the end of their contract in order to parlay more money for their financial future=s-m-a-r-t. Look at what happen to iso-Joe (not his fault being called iso-Joe; LD is obviously-to blame); Joes numbers started to slip AFTER he got all his money. In Josh’s mind he knows that the Hawks will pay him whatever he asks. Josh knows he’s a better player than Joe, and look what the Hawks paid him. Will that happen to Josh-WHEN he gets his new contract with the Hawks?-probably so. What does this say to other teams who covet him and may want to sign him? To me, it says that if Josh will turn down the money that the Hawks will offer him through free agency-and let’s say he signs with another team-who he knows can or will be a serious contender and Josh likes the coach, team, management, big time sports city, etc., then Josh may turn down the Hawks money and sign with another team.

I was a casual Hawks fan, and a season ticket holder for 5 years. That year when the took Boston to a game 7 was terrific. The crowd was electric and even though we lost, there was a sense of the best was yet to come. Sadly, that was the best. I would suggest blowing the team up and starting over, but Jill Johnson’s contract makes that impossible. The kid is good but has 0 heart. They Hawks should of at least let him get an offer from another team before maxing him out. Who else would have given him that???

Didn’t the Hawks lose a couple million dollars the year we lost to Boston in 7. Josh was the most exciting player in recent history and he wants out. Throw in the Bush recession there and there is little hope for cash over the cap. I assume new owners or no, will not change losing money in Atlanta. S-ck it up sports fans, this is as good as it gets.

Coach Woodson is a much better coach than his record. The first 2 or 3 years in Atlanta, he nor no one else would have won with those guys, The core group of players still had college eligibility. He took those young players and molded them to 50 plus wins and 2 round play-off spots. The players quit on him so he had to go. I would have rather the players that quit be gone, but oh well. Now that Coach Woodson is coach of the Knicks, no way will they trade Melo for Joe. Joe was D’antoni’s man I bet Coach Woodson would rather have Melo.

Here’s an idea that would certainly improve the Hawks. A bunch of the blogging fans on the AJC pool their resources, form a “Real Atlanta Spirit” group, buy the team, spend their money to build a team and win championships back to back to back! TMACfan volunteers to be general manager. He would do a way better job by his own admission. Davenpoop could be our coach. He is probably the knowledgeable poster here. Sonny Clusters could add his touch of reality humor. So many could make a difference. It’s not unheard of in professional sports for locals to own a team. Why not, we all have better and bitter ideas on how to run the Hawks….Far superior ideas for spending the other guys moiney…What do you say. Let’s Go Hawks Gang!

You know what’s so funny the NCAA last night was better than anything the NBA put up all season long.
Lehigh over Duke and Norfolk St(representing the HBCU who in reality no one ever thinks to advance anywhere), and Ohio over Michigan. USF over Temple man it’s going to be a wild March Madness.
Telling ya’ll right now the #1 seeds besides maybe Michigan St. and Kentucky have a good bit to be worried about.
Syracuse is not going to the Final 4 that’s for sure UNC might sneak into the sweet 16, but their run might not last either.

Sund is the IDIOT that paid Marvin Williams, and WAYYYY Overpaid Joe Johnson, Johnson should have been allowed to walk away, Williams should have been carried to a dumpster somewhere in the Middle east, and Kirk Hindtit??? good lawd! bout like trading the future for Mike freakin old ass Bibby!
Sund does not have a clue, he is just Billy Knight is redux!

Josh Smith to NJ Nets for Brooke Lopez, and Deron Williams,
Cleveland would get Marvin for a 3rd rounder
Joe well Joe is here unless someone gets itchy like Golden State or Washington.

1. Josh Smith is THE person on the team you can’t just trade him for D-will and Brook Lopez you could get way more than that.
2. Deron Williams is opting out of the NJ contract he is probably going to Dallas it is a done deal.
3. Washington has Jordan Crawford seem committed to him that was just our stupid thinking
4. We are stuck with Joe Johnson point blank.
5. Why give up on Jeff Teague he’s much quicker than Deron Williams. Doesn’t have that scoring punch/assist ability down yet, but he’s getting there.

The Hawks were smart for not making any trades. This is the best defensive team the Hawks have ever had.Kirk and Jeff will cause havoc in the playoffs and when Al Returns we will have 2 inside threats now that Josh has become more confindent.T-Mac-Marvin-Janero-Vlad-and Zaza off the bench will be deadly in the playoffs.Think of the bigger picture fellas.Next year Josh will have an even greater trade value and the team can package him with a first round Pick for a true small foward.
