The Hawks, as expected, didn’t make any major trades by today’s 3 p.m. deadline. Instead, they sent a second-round pick to Golden State for cash to help offset their first-ever luxury-tax bill that will be due at season’s end.
Under CBA rules, picks can be sold for up to $3 million but the Hawks will receive much less for their pick since first-round picks routinely sold for $3 million under the old CBA. In addition, under the new CBA there is an annual cap of $3 million on cash involved in trades, further driving down the price of picks.
The Hawks owned two second-round picks after acquiring one from the Suns in the Josh Childress sign-and-trade last summer. The Warriors will receive the lesser of the two picks and, since the Suns likely will finish with a worse record than the Hawks, Atlanta probably will keep that pick.
It was a quiet trade season overall for the Eastern Conference, with only three developments figure to affect the Hawks.
The Magic still will be a factor when the one potential blockbuster fizzled and Dwight Howard (ultimately) chose to to opt in for 2012-13. The Pacers traded a second-round draft pick to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa, who gives them some needed offensive punch. And the Sixers traded Ricky Sanchez to Memphis for Sam Young.
That was it as far as teams currently leading the Hawks in the East. The Bucks were the only other team in position for a playoff spot to make a move, acquiring Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson.
Check back later for a video blog with my thoughts on the Hawks.

Be in to check how you guys feel after people start seeing Horford is a tweener, that Zaza outperforms defensively & we held onto instead of going for a win now move.
how many playoffs has Horford actually NOT had a health concern?

I would go in on the Hawks but I don’t even feel like it right now. Hearing we traded a draft pick for some cash blew my high. Like northcyde said the Spirit Group really needs to just get out of the game. Clearly they are not committed to winning a championship.

Wow, didn’t the owner talk about how they were not a cheap team? And now they go ahead and trade a pick for cash just to help them with their first LT season… We could have used that pick to help fill the roster with Johnson’s huge contract, we all know ASG will want to keep him because they think he is a superstar.

Hawks are 2-1 against Indy this year, and 0-2 against Philly. Philly traded for Sam Young, and Pacers get barbosa.
If we meet either of these 2 teams in the playoffs, can we beat them in a 7 game series? I think so, but with the trades they made, they will be a tougher out.

I can’t wait until somebody in the organization points to the fact that the Hawks are one of the only teams to go into the luxury tax this year as proof of its commitment to winning. We went into the luxury tax for:
Jerry Stackhouse
If the Hawks kept Keith Benson on the roster instead of Stackhouse, he would be on a sub-veterans minimum deal and probably would have made the signing of Damp until the end of the season unnecessary. Benson blocked more shots in the pre-season than Damp has this season.

Boston would have all the respect in the world if they had that roster. All eyes on LA if they put that shtt together.
Us? “We like our core.” “We need to be healthy.” Stand pat slip to 8th seed. ASG deserves to miss completely and get 0 playoff revenue.

“Dumping a low 2nd round pick for cash is a more efficient use of assets than dumping a productive player to get under the tax line.” – Najeh
This may be true, but I can’t help admiring the PR savvy of the Hawks organization. The timing of selling off a draft pick right after the organization’s commitment to winning a championship has been publicly questioned is really impressive.

The self appointed best owners is Atlanta are so cash strapped they are selling off draft picks. The arena is in crap shape and the scoreboards dont even work at an arena with an electronics company sponsor. Time to blame the Atlanta fans again. Looks like it is time for a fire sale. Let’s sell everything not nailed down as we go down tubes. Anyone want to buy some used basketballs????

northcyde,
My issue is how do you give JJ one of the richest contracts in the League, and then sit on your hands? Is JJ’s contract really worth 2 home playoff games (JJ gets us 2 home games in the second round imo)
***********************
Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Pay him like a superstar, but choose not to build the team around him.
They’re so committed to these “core” group of guys, that they may not even understand that you may have to trade one of them, to make us better. Even if you trade for something slightly less ( or for multiple good players ), it may make the team better.
And smh @ a Hawk ticket rep calling me today, asking me about my experience at Philips Arena. I like Philips. The arena or in-game experience isn’t the problem. The inconsistency of the team is. But I’ll still go to the games if I’m in the ATL area. Knicks game is sold out, but I’ll probably be there anyway.
I’m not the type of fan to worry about. It’s those other fans that want you guys to do something significant, but refuse to do to, so you are in danger of losing them.

Don’t know why u Hawks fans are tripping. Hawks do this every year. They make trades at odd times, when people least expect it.
And I also told you folks Hawks will not trade Josh this season, even if he asked for it. And I’m glad they didn’t. Don’t see anything good out there.
Been a Hawks fan for years, but I’ve only been to one game. Shame on me! Why, though?
Before I spend free money like that, I have to know that I am getting my money’s worth. I ain’t got it like that to be blowing bucks on a Hawks team that is almost destined to lose. So I watch from my tv, post on their blog, send support from my posts and blogs, and hope they get it right enough to win a championship. If they ever get it right, then I will attend more games.
Right now, the ASG is not committed to winning a championship, they just happy being a “good” team making the playoffs. So they sell picks, and try to stay under the cap. Can someone tell me the last team that won a championship while under the cap? So anybody going crazy Hawks did not do a trade this year is nuts, unless they are season tickets holders, and even those should know better.
There are very few superstars in this league, and Hawks have none of them, and little chance of getting one. Josh might turn out to be one. That is why I do not appreciate the Hawks even thinking about trading him. Sometimes, no trade is better than a trade. How about we wait till the Hawks get completely healthy, maybe playoff time, before we pass judgement? Because I think they have a better squad this year than they have had in a long time.
I am as frustrated as every fan out there, but I have learned to treat the Hawks with a grain of salt, take them as they are, for what they are and not get overly emotional. I view every big game like the Hawks are gonna lose. So when they do, I am not devastated, and if they win, I am giddy with joy.
Hawks are a Jerkill and Hyde team for now, and fans just have to realise that, deal with it, and not go nuts when Hawks lose a game, don’t get a high profile coach, or make a trade at the deadline. Deal with it. The ASG is a cheap organization. Don’t expect anything great from them.
Goodnight, folks.

Can you say bad karma? You screw over the city by buying the hockey team when you clearly didn’t want it, and then after years of not doing anything productive with it, you sold it to the quickest bidder, which now resides in a town in the middle of nowhere in Canada.

Reasons I don’t go to the Hawks games but watch online.
1. The DJ don’t play enough rap music. To hype up the crowd you gotta play some Future – Tony Montana not no Pitbull & Ne-Yo – Give me Everything Tonight
2. Hawks have not had a center since Mutumbo left and still won’t sign one. Collins, Dampier, Nazr Mohammed, Zaza, Solomon Jones, and Horford don’t count.
3. I only can go on one side of the arena. I ain’t paying extra for the same view.
4. Too many thirsty azz groupies rooting for the visiting team and looking for they next simp to take money from. I would holla but I only mess with chicks south of the equator.
5. Last year getting blown out at home by the Bulls in game 6. They got they tail beat and acted like they didn’t even care. If the team don’t care why should the fans.

Blast . . that team is decent at home. Not as good as in year’s past, but decent. I’ve been to about 20 – 25 games the past 3.5 years ( including playoffs ), and the Hawks maybe lost 6 of those games. Thank God I’ve never had to sit through one of those 30+ point blowouts at Philips. They normally win when I watch them live.
Go to tomorrow night’s game vs the Wizards. That should be one of the cheapest tickets of the year, and you should be able to see the Hawks win.

Expect Josh to join the Brooklyn Nets to start the ‘12/’13 season. No D12 means the Russian’s got a huge need for someone who can be paired with Deron to create a bit of excitement in the new arena on the opposite side of the Brooklyn Bridge. As we approach the draft, look for the Nets to offer the Chump (Sund) one of their two lottery picks and a filler for Smoove.

I have nothing against Josh Smith BUT either he or Al Horford has to be traded. The play the same position and neither is very effective when both of them are on the court together. Playing Horford out of position at C isn’t fair to him. Smith shooting 3’s is a nightmare. What could we expect to receive for Josh Smith?
