Atlanta Hawks: Hawks trade second-round draft pick for cash

The Hawks, as expected, didn’t make any major trades by today’s 3 p.m. deadline. Instead, they sent a second-round pick to Golden State for cash to help offset their first-ever luxury-tax bill that will be due at season’s end.

Under CBA rules, picks can be sold for up to $3 million but the Hawks will receive much less for their pick since first-round picks routinely sold for $3 million under the old CBA. In addition, under the new CBA there is an annual cap of $3 million on cash involved in trades, further driving down the price of picks.

The Hawks owned two second-round picks after acquiring one from the Suns in the Josh Childress sign-and-trade last summer. The Warriors will receive the lesser of the two picks and, since the Suns likely will finish with a worse record than the Hawks, Atlanta probably will keep that pick.

It was a quiet trade season overall for the Eastern Conference, with only three developments figure to affect the Hawks.

The Magic still will be a factor when the one potential blockbuster fizzled and Dwight Howard (ultimately) chose to to opt in for 2012-13. The Pacers traded a second-round draft pick to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa, who gives them some needed offensive punch. And the Sixers traded Ricky Sanchez to Memphis for Sam Young.

That was it as far as teams currently leading the Hawks in the East. The Bucks were the only other team in position for a playoff spot to make a move, acquiring Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson.

Check back later for a video blog with my thoughts on the Hawks.

“First off Sautee, you have to UNDERSTAND that being ELITE is what you do in the REGULAR SEASON not the PLAYOFFS, so that KILLS your argument right there.”

First off, it was Rick Sund who said we were elite because we were one of 3 teams to make it to the second round. Does Rick Sund now deny saying that?

And, let’s see where are we in the regular season standings?

Oh, we’re 6th in the East and 10 teams have better records than we do. Is that elite? Nope.

Some of you fans have to admit that we maintained CONSISTENCY. TMACfan, we APPRECIATE your support. Ray remember that our GOAL is CONSISTENCY. This year we wanted to win 3 GAMES in the SECOND ROUND, but injuries have really slowed us down. Ray don’t be like fans of other teams that are UNGRATEFUL. Just wait until we are HEALTHY. Collins will be a BIG HELP FOR US.

Is there any regular blogger here who can buy in to us standing pat?

I just don’t understand the mindset of a team who could very well still drop out of the playoff picture.

My wish now since we can’t make a move is to simply let this thing implode, waste another season rooting on these guys, and dismantle the oldest team in the league. Sund has his money now….its too late for him to feel any pain.

I hope many of you stay away from Philips because of the actions this management group is taking. That’s the only way retribution can occur.

The ASG has to be the most incompetent group every assembled. Sund and LD are just 2 hangers on who would rat out their mother to keep their position.

Am I showing how disgruntled I am? Nene? McGee? Camby? Good gosh.
Josh, I hope you get your wish.

Kevin, seems like it is quite possible that Sund was only offered a few magic beans and/or flat soda in return for what he was willing to trade. Without knowing the specifics about every trade discussed, it is hard to say if he should have done something or even if he did the right thing by NOT moving forward with a trade. At the end of the day, he answers to his bosses and not the fan base.

You know it’s funny, I came on today….checked all the trades that were made and wasn’t a bit surprised that we didn’t make any significant moves. I wasn’t mad or angry or upset….it’s become like second nature. I don’t expect these guys to do anything, anymore. It’s a shame we have this talent pool, but not using it to get pieces we really need.

Crazy to think the quick and sudden developement of Faried made Nene, who some on here were drooling for, expendable. Even crazier to think a year ago we traded our chance to get him away for a guy who is a shell of himself currently and we couldn’t even get a pick for.

My issue is how do you give JJ one of the richest contracts in the League, and then sit on your hands? Is JJ’s contract really worth 2 homeplayoff games (JJ gets us 2 hoome games in the second round imo)

I think its time for the fans to say what they really feel about this organization. I got a feeling that these r-tards will drive the product down so badly that they will sell to a owner that will send this team to another city and that is happen right now. It is the same for the Trashers fans right now (they are still in first place the SE divison). Somebody needs to find a way so our voices can be heard or we going to lose another professional team.

AJ, excuses left and right, the facts are the ASG and Sund are okay with mediocrity and continue to screw the fan base.
I hope the media in this city continue to bash their logic and actions of the ASG and never give them an opportunity to promote their agenda.

If they are only being offered ‘beans’ than perhaps its because they have no idea what an asset is? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Sund was expecting a #1 in return for a Marvin…the same guy who said Bibby was in his prime……simply amazing.

@KevinM. Even if the Hawks miss the playoffs do you really think they will make any real changes? I can easily see the ASG using injuries as an excuse as to why the Hawks miss the playoffs. It would give them another reason to keep this team together. The only hope is a new owner. I dont think missing the playoffs will be enough. These guys keep excuses on deck so missing the playoffs would give them a good reason to talk about all the injuries this year.

well even though we stand pat this time, I feel it had something to do with all the injuries we have had this season, if the team was healthy enough and producing better, other teams would be more interested in trading, especially in horford’s situation, rick sund probably thinks we are on the talent level of chicago bulls and so he feels we are good enough to compete and should only get “healthy” up until the playoffs

OB, if you are bringing in a guy with 32 years experience and his best transaction is drafting the 8th best PG in 2009, I think there’s more problems than just the ASG.
Amnesty isn’t an option, our drafts are mediocre at best, and Sund himself has told you that there are no superstars coming to Atlanta.
At this rate, why do you even have a GM?

So the next time LD says we were tired after another lackadaisical defeat, we should just shrug and keep supporting the model here…..

Lucky with Teague, not so lucky with being healthy.

But built in excuses are the norm for this GM and his bosses.

cp, I expect nothing good to come from standing pat. There is lots of basketball left to play, and the depth continues to dwindle.

It’s hard to be optimistic when its blantantly obvious more help is needed. I guess Collins will fill the void though huh?

Astro,

I think we can connect the dots that the Hawks were trying to move Kirk without taking back salary or equal salary. They were probably trying to save money in any trade deal that were propose. Like you said, follow the money. Jamal couldn’t go to a team he preferred in a sign and trade deal b/c the Hawks didnt want to take back salary. Josh Chills deals looks even worst now that they sold the pick and didn’t use the TPE they got from Phx for him. ASG thought they could pull the wool over their fans eyes by signing Joe to the max contract alwhile trying to sell the team to get from under the responsiblity of seeing it thru. These owners are over their heads and budget. Sell this team to someone who can afford to run it properly.

Ka-Fizzle!

What a dud of A fire-cracker! The ASKG remind me of why I dumped my last boy-friend:

In the bedroom, he was done before he started. At the restaurant, he was spent before he pulled his wallet out. Besides, I had to pick him up for dates and for the kicker: he didn’t know any body, who knew anybody, who had a job!

I can do bad all by myself. Shout out to Sautee for the word of the day: Ka-Fizzle!
_________

FTPB: O’Brien … Yeah man, Marvin probably fell out of bed and hurt his hip that morning.
____________

Biggie Lou, thunder rocks … (LOL) my walking dead buddy! I gotta go back and re-read your comments FTPB, it was too much good stuff to absorb at first read. I find our dialogue more riveting than the Hawks lately. I’ll get back to you later with my reply. But, the basement will be the next big movie scene, if not the barn. Maybe both, because that barn has been more at play than the inside of the house so far – right? I mean after the surgery to save the kid, the big sit down dinner and, the attempted suicide
scene … Not much has happened inside there.

We didn’t even know there was a basement? Old farm houses typically just have the shelter on the outside, like in the Wizard of Oz. I forget what you call those things … A bunker for tornadoes? A canning shed? Anyway … The basement will be something to see next.

I am NOT a movie buff at all, more into reading medical books and watching sports. Mainly because, I always know what gonna’ happen before it does and I find most obvious plots extremely boring and generally fall asleep in cinema theaters or, like In The Passion of Christ … I just walk out after 10 mins, due to the violence. So, this walking dead is special for me, because I’m hooked – which is awfully rare for a “wanna be” know it all like me. LOL
_________

About the hawks! Nothing new there … I’ve yet to read MC’s new blog up yet, as usual it’s probably old news by now. We know more and sooner than the blog prints. I can’t wait until somebody in the organization points to the fact that the Hawks are one of the only teams to go into the luxury tax this year as proof of its commitment to winning. We went into the luxury tax for:

Jerry Stackhouse

If the Hawks kept Keith Benson on the roster instead of Stackhouse, he would be on a sub-veterans minimum deal and probably would have made the signing of Damp until the end of the season unnecessary. Benson blocked more shots in the pre-season than Damp has this season.
