Atlanta Hawks: Hawks trade second-round draft pick for cash

The Hawks, as expected, didn’t make any major trades by today’s 3 p.m. deadline. Instead, they sent a second-round pick to Golden State for cash to help offset their first-ever luxury-tax bill that will be due at season’s end.

Under CBA rules, picks can be sold for up to $3 million but the Hawks will receive much less for their pick since first-round picks routinely sold for $3 million under the old CBA. In addition, under the new CBA there is an annual cap of $3 million on cash involved in trades, further driving down the price of picks.

The Hawks owned two second-round picks after acquiring one from the Suns in the Josh Childress sign-and-trade last summer. The Warriors will receive the lesser of the two picks and, since the Suns likely will finish with a worse record than the Hawks, Atlanta probably will keep that pick.

It was a quiet trade season overall for the Eastern Conference, with only three developments figure to affect the Hawks.

The Magic still will be a factor when the one potential blockbuster fizzled and Dwight Howard (ultimately) chose to to opt in for 2012-13. The Pacers traded a second-round draft pick to Toronto for Leandro Barbosa, who gives them some needed offensive punch. And the Sixers traded Ricky Sanchez to Memphis for Sam Young.

That was it as far as teams currently leading the Hawks in the East. The Bucks were the only other team in position for a playoff spot to make a move, acquiring Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson.

Check back later for a video blog with my thoughts on the Hawks.

The owners shove some money in their pockets before they try to sell the team again this offseason. Somebody buy this team please.

Come on, did anyone expect the Hawks to actually try to improve the team? All they’re trying to do is manage the salary situation they got into by overpaying folks like JJ, Marvin and Bibby. Funny how fans saw this coming but Hawks management didn’t.

I can’t blame for Josh wanting to leave. I wish him well but I’m leaving out the door right behind him when it happens.

Bottom line is this team is not trying to win a championship. No other explanation. I am so glad that I stopped my season tickets two years ago, because I would simply be wasting my money. I will continue to support them and watch them on tv, but they will not get another dime from me.

@Sautee,

First off Sautee, you have to UNDERSTAND that being ELITE is what you do in the REGULAR SEASON not the PLAYOFFS, so that KILLS your argument right there. Sautee, you have to understand that it is a LEARNING PROCESS when it comes to DEVELOPING OUR PLAYERS.

We need more fans like you who are SATISFIED and know that IT TAKES TIME to build a winner. More fans need to have more PATIENCE. CraZy sees the UPSIDE in this team and knows that if we didn’t have any INJURIES and were HEALTHY we would at least be the 3 seed. CraZy doesn’t EXPECT TOO MUCH like most of you fans.

You have to REALISTIC and understand that with MY EXPERIENCE in building WINNERS I have seen a great deal. That is I can understand why Me and the Owners really LIKE THE TEAM we have. You can’t just PANIC when a losing streak happens. Every season has it’s UPS and DOWNS.

LOL @ selling a pick for cash.

These owners just need to get out of the game. Surely that Luxury Tax bill wasn’t over a million dollars. If they’re that cash strapped to sell off picks, even a 2nd round one, then they just need to get out of the NBA ownership business.

Meanwhile, a REAL KABOOM is taking place in Portland.

At minimum, we should have Jordan Crawford and Kenneth Faried as young CHEAP talent to bring off the bench. But nope. Can’t develop any talent here. Rather “rent-a-player” from Rent-A-Center for a year, then return him after the year is up.

We were OPEN to some deals, but felt it would be in the BEST INTEREST of the organization that we trade our 2nd Round pick to stay under the LUXURY TAX. I mean we need FANS TO PACK the building so we can keep our CORE INTACT. Just wait fans, when we are HEALTHY you will see a DIFFERENT TEAM.

No Astro Joe, we are CONTENT with the job Drew has done. So no coaching changes. We like the fact that Drew knows how to USE A BENCH CONSISTENTLY. We like how he has GRADUALLY WORKED IN KIRT HINRICH. His DEVELOPMENT OF TEAGUE AND JOSH. With Drew JOSH has become a SUPERSTAR and CORNERSTONE of this team. We also like the fact that he doesn’t panic and STICKS TO HIS PLAN TO REST PLAYERS LIKE TMAC THE OTHER NIGHT IN DENVER even though we didn’t have many bodies due to injury.

Not that anyone listens to me, but I have been saying “follow the money” for about 3-4 years now. I have NO idea why some of you all continue to think that the ASG is trying to win a title. They have point blank said their goal is to bring an entertaining product to the city. They haven’t spent more than $2.5M on a free agent signing since the Speedy Claxton contract. They have a formula for generaiting revenue (6 home playoff games) and won’t change things until the formula stops working. Follow the Money.
