Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 106, Kings 99

Sacramento–The Hawks engaged the Kings in a smallball, free-wheeling game, kept them off the offensive glass and won. All of that overshadows the lax closeouts and careless turnovers that allowed the Kings to hang around longer than they should have.

  • Larry Drew went with Kirk Hinrich at shooting guard, Joe Johnson at small forward and Marvin Williams on the bench. I’ve long favored that alignment and Drew has said he’s considered using it regularly but never has committed to it and still isn’t.
  • “Possibly,” Drew said. “I’m big on matchups. Coming into this game, one of my fears was they started three guards. I didn’t want to put our club at a disadvantage having Marvin chasing guards. It has some value for us in playing Kirk in that starting spot. We bring in a guy who gives us a toughness. We are a little bit more defensive-minded with him in there. When Marvin comes off the bench, he comes in more as being a first, second or third option.”
  • Marvin was in attack mode while bulling his way to the basket and dunking on people. Could it be that coming off the bench might offer him some advantages? “I don’t know about advantages,” he said. “I guess it gives you a chance to see how the game is going to be called and how its’ going to be played. I think that’s really the only thing. I just wanted to come out and be aggressive coming off the bench. [Drew] told me earlier in the day and it was no big deal.”
  • The potential weakness for this starting lineup is rebounding but not tonight because Zaza Pachulia was beasting on the boards. He could have had an even bigger night if not for a suspect call on his fourth foul. “He was playing his butt off,” Josh Smith said. “Whenever he’s able to be active like that on the glass, he’s that much more effective.”
  • Small ball became even smaller for the Hawks with Zaza in foul trouble. It worked because Josh had more success handling DeMarcus Cousins’ skill around the basket, Vladimir Radmanovic suddenly grabbed rebounds like he’s 6-10 and Jeff Teague and Joe got it going offensively.
  • “I had to make a decision whether to bring [Erick] Dampier back in the game or move Josh to the five spot,” Drew said. “I made the decision to go small on Cousins. He was having a good game. I didn’t want to start double-teaming him and opening up the 3-point line. It worked to our favor offensively because we were able to do some things differently and it was a bad matchup for them.”
  • The Hawks had some good offensive possessions in the fourth quarter because Josh and Joe made good decisions out of double teams. “We missed some shots out of the double team but we made the right play,” Drew said.
  • “When Josh was posting I tried to get weak side,” Joe said. “I knew he would find me. We played off of him. He had it going. ”
  • “Normally that diagonal pass is open to the other swing but he was definitely open,” Josh said. “I was able to get him some easy looks, some open jump shots. I was able to knock down some jumpers and score on the block. They were drawn to me and I was able to make plays out of the double team and out of the dribble drive.”
  • Josh had his jumper working early so the Kings were forced to respect it. “Offensively, he’s a tough cover,” Keith Smart said. “He’s too big for a small forward and too quick sometimes for a power forward. He chases the ball to the shot clock. Anything that he sees going to the basket, he’s going to chase that and going to try and control the basket, control the paint. His jump shot was working tonight.”
  • Clearly the trade request isn’t affecting Josh’s play. A Sacto media guy asked Josh if he wants to be a “Hawk for life”: “I’m here. I have one more left on my deal. We have to see what happens. I just have to keep playing the way I’m capable of playing and keep doing what I’m doing and not worry about any outside distractions.”
  • Another Sacto media guy, who apparently doesn’t have an Internet connection, asked Josh if there were “rumors or something about you being traded.” Josh: “”Can you ask me another question?”
  • Another efficient scoring night for Joe (21 points on 13 shots, 9-for-9 on free throws). This time he actually looked better in the second half than the first. But Joe has never been great at getting around defenders and you can see that losing even just a little bit of quickness makes that task nearly impossible.
  • Joe said he’s back in the lineup for good and doesn’t plan on sitting on the second night of back-to-backs or doing any other modifications for the knee. “It feels good,” he said. “The strength is about 85-90 percent. It’s way better than I was two weeks ago.”
  • Teague (16 points on 11 shots, seven assists, three steals) had a strong effort. He was in control while weaving through Sacto’s defense. Teague seemed to get fired up once Isaiah Thomas got him a couple times.
  • Hinrich’s jumper is looking better. He did good work against Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton.
  • Another ineffective stint for Jannero Pargo, which was surprising since this figured to be his kind of game.
  • Tracy McGrady got a DNP-CD. “This was a game where I’m looking at the matchups,” Drew said. “This Sacramento team, they are young and get up the floor. From a matchup standpoint it made sense to shorten the rotation to go with more speed.”

“The Magic would be willing to trade Dwight Howard to Chicago in exchange for Omer Asik, Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer and a valuable first-round pick from Charlotte, according to a report.

Chicago will not move forward with the trade scenario without assurances that Howard will sign a long-term deal with the Bulls, which he’s given no indication he’ll do.”

Sund isn’t about to move 2 ‘all-stars’ for D12. You think the Bulls can get him with only one?

Fine with me, I am good with what we have, and let’s let Sund tell us once again we go as far as Joe takes us.

I’m assuming your Knicks reference is intending to point figures at Melo but he has lead his Denver team to a WCF. Same as Amare and Chandler won a ring last year with the Mavs.

While you can say you wouldn’t want that decade long albatross around your neck, go out and tell someone you’re a Hawks’ fan and see what kind of response you get.

Both of those teams have seen something besides the 2nd round, so is there really a discussion here?

Both Philly and Indiana have passed us right by, have they not? We’re a 6 seed today, looking at our favorite punching bag, Orlando. Do you really like our chances against any other winning team this year? I want our guys to win, but until they do it, we have no clue if they can even win a pivotal series.

So, another satified season getting to the 2nd round should we ‘upset’ our 1st round matchup?

Melvin, the discussion was about teams and their futures. Pacers & 76ers have a far brighter future than Knicks and Magic.

Melo had a guy named Billups next to him during that WCF run. Team won 54 regular season games and had a player in Billups who brought tremendous leadership. My guess is that in the last 20 games Melo has played for the Knicks, they have lost 65% of them. And my guess is that the Knicks have won 65%+ of the games without Melo in the past 4-6 weeks.

“Dwight Howard to Chicago in exchange for Omer Asik, Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer and a valuable first-round pick from Charlotte”

We simply can’t beat this.

The best we could manage would be Horford, Marvin (if they were dumb enough), Teague and a first round.

Eventually, our leverage could be to take a worse contract than CHI is willing to accept in the package (Turk) and to accept that we could be looking at a 1 month rental.

Honestly, I would trade Horford + Marvin and a 1st for Howard+Turk in a heart beat even without ANY assurances from Howard that he would stay.

However, I would couple this move with the hiring of Larry Brown to take us there. I am sure that he would jump at the opportunity and he is the best available HC if we take into consideration that Sloan is retired and Phil Jackson cannot implement the triangle offense in 1 month.

Melvin, no I missed that Josh is looking for a group hug to make him feel better. So now we’re making changes to appease Josh based on 10-12 good games? And since I have missed most of the chatter for the past 10 days, let me get this straight. Horford is a bum because he said he wanted to play a different position for the Hawks but Josh is a hero because he says he will only play for the Hawks if they make changes that suit him? That conclusion is about as dysfunctional as hiring the lead assistant.

And why wouldn’t the Bulls make that trade without knowing that Dwight will sign long-term? Why not just roll the dice and resolve themselves to the notion that he will LOVE playing next to D. Rose and the passionate Bulls fanbase? Oh yeah, because a GM that gives away the farm for a 2 month rental would need to find a new source of income in July when Howard signs with the Mavs or Nets, that’s why.

AJ,

Horford will never be a difference maker and Josh is proving that he might still become one (he is being right now).

That alone make their situations completely different.

Also, Horford has a preference to play in a position where he can’t help us as much as Josh does and has a preference for not playing in the only position where he can be effective.

Not a question of being a bum, but I would rather go to war with Josh than with Al who has become a softie.

AJ,

The Bulls are indeed fools because their chances at winning a ring with Rose+Howard would be astronomically high.

Deng and Boozer (and Asik) are very good players BUT:

Taj would continue to fill in at the PF slot and behind Noah who could easily and effectively spell Howard.

Rip or even Brewer would fill in the SF slot. Not exactly at the same level than Deng BUT with Rose and Howard their game would be basically two guys demolishing the opposition with role players filling in.

OB – The one caveat I would make about the Braves are the young arms. They’ve got 2-3 more young arms that really may make a difference. But I do agree with your basic premise, it does seem we were content to grow from within. We did have numbers 1 and 2 in rookie of the year voting last season, and the rookie of the year at least by some the previous year also.

Ryan is what we knew he was, a top 10-15 qb, who’s not elite. That was what was on the scouting report before the draft. Can he win a superbowl? Maybe. But he’s no Peyton Manning.

I still say try to keep Josh, trade for Dwight, keep Teague and see what happens.
The only semi-legit Josh trade rumor I currently see is the Cavs one. Varejo, Sessions, Parker for Josh, Marvin gives us a plus 3 on trade machine, and the Cavs +1, and gets us under the tax. It’s the type move I could see asg making.

And if Varejo wasn’t hurt so much, it may be an ok move. But that guy stays hurt throughout his career.

Report is the rockets have offered Martin, Scola, Dragic and a First for Gasol. Wow!

Hoops Rumours says Josh likely isn’t going anywhere until possibly the draft. Say what you want, but I can see a scenario with a bunch of hungry vets making some real noise in the playoffs. If everybody stays healthy and focused, we can make a push in the playoffs even without Horford.

Since the Clippers and Wolves want Hinrich at the 2, maybe LD had another reason for starting him there.

vava, long-term, trade makes perfect sense. But last year’s Heat team should serve as an example that sometimes thigs need to marinate before they reach their full potential. And from other rumors out there, Dwight doesn’t want to play second fiddle to Rose (said differently, he only wants to win if he is the man, he’s not interested in winning with someone else in the starring role).

Regarding Josh, if a player wants out, I would always show him the door. I struggle to think of a single player for any team that I follow that I woulldn’t trade if he asked to be gone from that team. I would have traded Greg Maddox in 1995 had he asked to be traded. Same for any Falcon, Brave or Hawk in the past 30 years. If you don’t want to wear the uni, get gone would be my sentiment. Especially if I have the ability to sell high. Of course, the assumption is that I am acquiring a comparable asset and not a stale bag of chips.

Even with his recent tear, Josh’s trade value is not high enough to bring us anything remotely close in value (yes, I consider him very valuable).

Josh’s potential as main cog is still unknown.

Never trade an asset which value is not yet determined.

Hence my rants about giving Josh the clear main cog status in a make or break opportunity.

If he makes it, we will alway gain, even if we are forced to trade him next year.

Wade is Batman, LeBron is Robin, and Bosh is Catwoman. Besides it being technically impossible, what does he expect to be in Miami?

And the Clippers support Blake Griffin 100 percent. And then you have Chris Paul there to…..so where would he fit in there and be the head honcho?

One thing I do hate about trade deadlines is when these superstars come out and say these idiotic things that make no sense whatsoever. I don’t care them demanding trades to certain teams. But be smart about it.

The Hawks have a great chance to seperate themselves from playoff slot 7 the next 2 weeks. The C’s play 9 of the next 11 on the road…ouch!

They have to make a deadline move to get new energy in there. They can’t stand pat and think they can win a 1st round series against CHI or MIA.

Meanwhile, Josh is in his 7th year (although he didn’t get the college coaching Al did), and he is just now playing at his highest level. Why are you giving up on Al? Just because he looked soft in the playoffs last year?

We would have to take a worse salary back to rid ourselves of him.

At this stage, all I can hope for is for LD to play him off the bench and maybe he plays himself out of minutes.
You can say though, that his production is better than Kirk, who just hasn’t come back with anything.

T-Mac, would you take on Ben Gordon’s salary if it meant moving Marvin. Does Ben have anything to justify 2 more years and 25.6M? He’s getting 28MPG and 12ppg. Would he fit on this roster?

SteveW,

If everybody stays healthy and focused, we can make a push in the playoffs even without Horford..

It depends on matchups. If we face Indy or Orlando in the first round, I like our chances. If we face Philly, I’m not sure which team will show up. If we play Miami or Chicago, we lose.

So Hawks need to avoid being the 7th or 8th seed. If we can do that, we have a good chance of advancing to the second round, which will be where we lose again for the 4th year in a row.

Pathetic Owners, Scared GM, Clueless Coach, Overpaid Player who Dominique calls a “SUPERSTAR”. If they keep Josh, they might get to the second round. If they get rid of him they might make the playoffs, but lose in the first round. It’s all about winning a CHAMPIONSHIP, which the hawks will never win. Probably not. The Lakers’ other first rounder is from the Mavs, so both of those picks will probably be in the 20s. I doubt that the Hawks can package two picks in the 20s to trade up into the range where they can get a true impact player. If it was a low lottery pick I might feel differently.

Regarding Josh indirectly suggesting discontent with the Hawks to stimulating trade talks; haven’t you guys figured it out by now?

This is nothing more than typical star player posturing going into his contract year. JJ did it when he announced he was testing the market rather than sign an extension with the Hawks in 2010. It worked out great for him and I’m sure Josh took notes.

http://hittheboards.com/basketballjunkie/2009/10/joe_johnson_to_test_free-agent_market_in_2010.html

Having Josh test the market after his rookie contract might be lingering salt added to an old wound. Josh seems to be taking an aggressive approach to handling his business this time around. But nonetheless, this is all smoke and mirrors.

Consider this; what would Josh gain pushing for a trade with 1 year left on his current deal other than to turn the heat-up within the Hawks organization. Any receiving team acquiring Josh would only pay him the same amount under his current contract. So, Josh wouldn’t net any more money next year from the trade stunt he’s pulling now. He’s just sending the message, that he’s wants to be paid (big time) if the Hawks plan to keep him.

Consider this; if Josh got snubbed from the eastern conference teams means those coaches (going into the all-star break) didn’t believe Josh was worthy of being an all-star which translates negatively in a contract year for big dollars. So Josh is swimming up stream now to convince them otherwise. BTW he’s doing a great job but the verdict on Josh of being a superstar (worthy of max money) still remains.

Based on the history of FA in Josh’s shoes, however, he has more to gain from the “stunt of discontent”, than he has to lose.

Kevin M,

All of the guys you listed averaged double figure points in the playoffs for their careers, except for Varajeo (who is known for defense), and Tyrus Thomas (who is just as big a bust as Marvin). Guys make their monry in the NBA in the playoffs. I would feel much better going into the playoffs with Shawn Marion, Richard Jefferson or John Salmons playing the 3 than I would Marvin. Hell, I would feel better going into the playoffs with Salmons playing the 2 than I would Joe Johnson at this point. Salmons usually steps up in the playoffs. Also all of the guys listed can take advantage of smaller players, and finish at the rim without getting their shot blocked.

The talks have not advanced to the ownership level, but the two teams have exchanged proposals and were mulling over this idea on Monday.”

MEANWHILE, back at the Ole Ponderosa:

“The Hawks appear determined to stand pat with their roster through the deadline, barring a minor deal that could help them for the stretch run and playoffs, sources say. One possibility would be moving Kirk Hinrich, but it would have to be a trade that helped them basketball-wise, not simply a salary dump. As for Josh Smith, who isn’t exactly denying that he’s requested a trade, Hawks GM Rick Sund’s approach to such things historically has been to deal with them in the offseason — say, around the draft, when more teams will be active in the trade market and draft picks acquired in trades will be known quantities.”

This is why the fans need to boycott! Nothing against the players, its just sorry management. They are a team full of guards with one undersized center, one that has a giant hear but little hands!
