Atlanta Hawks at Pacers: Game thread

IndianapolisLarry Drew ruled out Al Horford returning before the end of the regular season: “What I’ve been told he’s definitely out for the regular season and there is a possibility [of return] for the playoffs.” Al has said he should know more about his timetable when he returns to see his doctor next week.

  • Joe Johnson (knee) and Willie Green (back) are out. Tracy McGrady (knee) and Jerry Stackhouse (ill) are active. Jeff Foster (back) is out for the Pacers.
  • Joe plans to play at some point during the trip. Drew: “Right now we don’t know [when]. We are just going off how he feels. He has his good days, he has some bad days. It was his decision and our decision to allow that thing to heal to at least get to the point where he can play with a little bit more consistency [and] where the knee feels good. Since we shut him down it feels better. Right now the focus is to get him stronger.”
  • McGrady said he has to manage his surgically-repaired left knee: “It doesn’t do very well on the back-to-backs. I didn’t have my balance and planted it wrong [vs. the Thunder]. It was already sore before the game.” Drew: “I don’t think he’s 100 percent but he feels like he can go. We will see how he looks.”
  • Stackhouse ended up traveling with the team Monday. “It was some kind of food poisoning or something,” he said. ” Yesterday was not a good day.”
  • I’ve covered a lot of games in this building, both with the Heat and Hawks, and I can tell you what’s likely going to happen: The Pacers are going to beat up on the Hawks and there are not going to be many whistles. That’s just how it is.
  • Drew: “This team, they play very physical at home. The last time we were here at this building, they physically took us out of what we wanted to do. Our last meeting at our place we kind of turned the tides. Anytime you play against an Indiana team, because they are so big and athletic, you have to match the physicality. That certainly will be the case tonight.”

Josh Smith Northcyde’s ever convenient scapegoat.

And even worse is that Ivan Johnson has lately been coming in for Zaza to play center in LD’s smallball lineups. Not coming in for Josh. When Ivan plays forward the spacing changes he’s taking “camping out at the top of the key” aka making the proper rotation.

Here’s Ivan at PF

Nothing to report for the Hawks in the area or trades – typical. Quality GMs are wheelin’ and dealin’ and Sund is just chillin?

Drew: “I don’t think he’s 100 percent but he feels like he can go. We will see how he looks.”

Genius!!! No one is 100 percent at this point. Play the man!

We need Ivan to play a lot of minutes at center… he’s the only player available with enough size and speed to counter Hibbert when Zaza goes to the bench. Hibbert is a dirty player who has caused several injuries to opposing players this year. The Hawks have got to put a big body on him. Ivan may give up height but he can push Hibbert away from the basket and make him work.

No sense camping out at the top of the key if ya cant shoot from there? Move without the ball and trust your guards will find you on the pick and rolls and back door cuts cause they will..

Teague will improve if he see’s people cutting instead of standing around and watching him take his man off the dribble from the perimeter…

Trust your Guards…..

This feels like one of those games where the Hawks fall behind in the late 1st/early 2nd quarter and spend the rest of the game trying to claw back into it, only to fall short in the end.

Pacers by 11. Kirk is giving up a half a foot to Paul George at SG. Not a good matchup for him.

Nique just said “nimbers” and “Hibbits” in the same sentence.

Key subplot: Hibbert is the most obvious target about agents “making a bid” for All-Star selections. If Josh ever wanted to make a point about being an All-Star snub, this is the game to do it, while the Hawks are missing two other All-Stars and he is practically the only option.

The Pacers’ home record is not that great as to reflect some kind of special home court advantage. They are 11-4. If they lose tonight their home record will basically be tied with the Hawks.

All you fans of Josh you came to the wrong blog page.

This is Al horfords Fan club and we are part of the Al horford led MEDIOCRE PLAYER MOVEMENT where we despise talented players who work hard and get better, shame on you Josh.

We believe in mediocre talent and sub par performances. We love failing in the playoffs and if our leader All MEDIOCRE AL disappears in the playoffs as he has for 39 games it puts us in a state of euphoria.

We emphatically hate JOSH SMITH on this MEDIOCRE MOVEMENT BLOG PAGE, he played great in the playoff last year, worked extremely hard in the off season and is playing OUTSTANDING this year. As bright as his light is shinning we will search very diligently to find something in his game that WE dont like and that will become the focus of our blog. WE HATE JOSH!!

Bring us back our 12pts 8rb no blocks ordinary Al, We love it when instead of focusing on winning and bringing some tenacity to the center post, he digresses and starts internal fights about playing JOSH’S POSITION, or when he ESCORTS the opposition to the rim and takes snap shots of them dunking on us. We love that lack of effort. We are the Mediocre Player Movement, formerly known as the BUBBA CREW. We get excited when LAZY Al rips a ankle out of joint or detaches a limb from his body to get out of work. WE LOVE THAT. GO AL!! WHOO WHOO WHOO….

This is the Mediocre Player Movement and our goal is to bring mediocrity to Atlanta sports. We brought you

Al Hoford
Matt Ryan
Jeff Teague

Just to drop a few names. We have no ambition to win and like Al, we just want a little camel toe and a place to lay down…..

So get over it Josh. Stop playing like a Star and get back down here to Al horford’s non performing, contentious, slothful, heartless, average Al type performances that have led Atlanta OUT OF the second round of the playoffs every year.

Mediocre Al for President!!

Whooo, Whooo, Whooo.

I know Damp isn’t on the floor for offense, but on that possession where he got called for a moving screen, Teague fed him in the post literally three feet away from the basket. When you catch it with that kind of post position you have to at least try to score, especially when you are in the penalty. At least pump fake and see if you can draw a foul.

7 Hawks have 2 fouls in this game, including 4 starters.

Hawks had a chance to really step on the Pacers’ throat and blew it, but they are playing well on the glass and generally moved the ball well on offense and got good shots. Gotta do a better job guarding Granger coming off those screens and staying aggressive on D without fouling. Yeah, there were some questionable calls, but there were also some dumb reach in fouls that could have been avoided.

Also gotta get back to being aggressive on D and disrupting passes. Yeah, that might result in fouls, but so what? Josh and Teague are the only ones who should be worried about their foul total. Everyone else can be replaced by someone on the bench if they get in foul trouble.

mainly b/c Drew would rather utilize his passing/play making ability from the perimeter vs letting him play from the painted area where he’s more effective; Tmac and the C position occupied the post up area.

Interesting idea. I might do it if Washington threw in their first round pick this year, but there’s no way they go for that.

I’d probably ask for Chris Singleton over Vesely, too, since the Hawks would need a SF.

I like this team…even w/o JJ and Al. Need Willie out there – Only 6 points for the Hawks in the last 5:20, and 4 of those were FT’s in the last 30 seconds.

Trade JJ and Al for Dwight and Hedo, and see what happens.

Huge win. I am going out on a limb and predicting 3-3 road trip. Lot of heroes but Josh, Z, Pargo, TMac were the big stars. Ivan with big run in 1st half. Watching the interview with Pargo. Seems like a great guy and he can really shoot

Hawks by far the hardest schedule in the League over the past 15 games – and we’ve held our own – even with JJ and Al out.

Hollingers Schedule stats only go out 10 games, but we’ve been on top for hardest schedule for quite a while now – and with Miami away, not going down anytime soon.

Good Job Hawks!!!!!!

Quit with trades. I like the way these guys have come together and pulled out a couple of big wins but postseason this team needs Al’s rebounding and JJ’s scoring to have any chance against Bulls or Heat. This team could be dangerous with Teague, TMac, green/Pargo added to the “core”. Don’t trust LD to do much for us but Josh can provide th leadership to bring it all together.

Najeh Davenpoop

Going to SteveW’s point, the Hawks are 7-9 since February 1, and 12 of those 16 games were against current playoff teams.

The Hawks are only 2-2 in the 4 games against non-playoff teams, since they lost to Phoenix and Golden State, so they are 5-7 against the playoff teams in that stretch. Not great, could be worse, but could be a whole lot better if they had taken care of business against the bad teams. The Golden State loss in particular stings since it was completely avoidable and would have the Hawks at 8-8 in that stretch if they had won.

Ntrigue – Philly is in 1st place – so it’s the 3 Division winners, then the best records after that – but yes, we’re currently 1.5 games better than Philly.

Philly is really struggling against better competition – Chicago gets some tough competition coming up also, as does the Pacers.

Pacers by 11. Kirk is giving up a half a foot to Paul George at SG. Not a good matchup for him.

“Well why is Orlando #3 in the conf and Philly #4 and Atlanta #6 and our record is better than Philly too like Orlando?”

Division winners are guaranteed a top 4 seed, and Philly leads their division. The top 4 seeds every year are the three division winners and the best wild card, in order from best to worst records. Then the 5-8 seeds are the remaining wild cards, in order from best to worst record. Orlando is the best wild card and has a better record than Philly, so they are 3rd. Philly is a division leader, so they are in the top 4 ahead of Atlanta and Indiana, who are not division leaders.

Like I said the other day, I think the Hawks are better than Orlando, Indy and Philly. Although Philly has swept them, I like the Hawks odds of beating any of those three teams in a playoff series. However, Boston (with savvy vets) and the Knicks (offensive fire power) I think would give the Hawks problems in a playoff series. Of course nothing to say about the Bulls/Heat…

If Sund can pulloff a trade that would bring another scorer or big for Hinrich than the Hawks may improve their chances of competing with the Bulls and Heat.

BIG win, especially since tomorrow doesn’t look promising, it was important not to start a trip 0-2.

I still wonder about Drew some times. Game on the line late, basically needing to hit our free throws to wrap it up – please explain why Josh is on the floor. Yes, he’s stepped up tremendously recently, but he remains a 50% FT shooter. So for him to be on the court at that stage shows a huge lack of basketball common sense on Drew’s part.
