Updated: Johnson out versus Bucks due to knee injury

Vivlamore reporting from Philips Arena.

The Hawks will be without All-Star guard Joe Johnson for tonight’s game against the Bucks.  He will also miss Saturday’s game against the Thunder. Johnson returned from tendinitis in his left knee for Thursday night’s game against the Warriors. Despite scoring a team-high 18 points in 38 minutes, Johnson had trouble with the knee late in the game.

“After the Golden State game, Joe doesn’t feel like his knee is 100 percent and he did experience a little discomfort, particularly in the second half,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “We made the decision to hold him out until that knee gets stronger, until he feels like he is closer to 100 percent.”

Beyond the next two games, Drew said there was no timetable on how long the team would be without their leading scorer. He termed Johnson’s status as “day-to-day.”

“We are going to closely look at it and treat it and try to strengthen it,” Drew said. “Right now, it’s weak. He has been making progress but the knee is weak. We feel it will do him more good to where he can strengthen it to where it’s closer to 100 percent.”

Johnson missed the Hawks two games prior to the All-Star break and did not play in the exhibition in order to rest his knee. The game against the Warriors was the first game back.

“Right now the focus to get it stronger,” Drew said.

In other injury news, the Hawks will also be without Willie Green tonight and Saturday. The guard is suffering from back spasms and getting hurt against the Warriors.

Josh Smith, despite an illness, will play tonight. Vladimir Radmanovic, who missed the Warriors game with an illness, practiced Friday morning and Drew said a decision will be made of his status at game time.

I can’t believe that rumor about Josh for Garnett is true. Hawks have no reason to do that trade.

I’m not against them trading anyone on the team. But, they can’t make a trade where they get their a$$es handed to them. Garnett for Josh is a HUGE win for Boston. Plus, I hate KG. If it weren’t for Howard and LeBron, he would be the biggest douche in the league.

Well looks like a 20+ shot attempt night for Josh. Might be time to start clearing some salary and acquiring some first round picks. Even if this team makes the playoffs, the only team I can see them beating in the first round is Orlando. If they have to match up against anybody else then its one and done. The sad part is that the ASG will use injuries as an excuse to bring back the core and LD next season.

@Section 303. The reason the Hawks might consider the KG deal is because of that huge expiring contract he has. It would help the Hawks financially. If the Hawks have a chance to clear a bunch of salary and maybe get another first rounder, they might do that deal but I dont see Sund being that bold.

I actually like this “new” strategy of the Hawks, shifting away from a heart-breaking 1st rd exit to a higher draft pick. As in a poker game, know when to hold and when to fold. The Hawks apparently see it for what it is.

The games will be more enjoyable to watch now with no expectation to win. Let Josh launch as many jumpers as he wants as he can auction for his next jig and give role players like Ivan a lot of burns.

The only thing we asked is that these players play hard, don’t lay-down and play to win.

How much more than Josh does Garnett make?

And, if this deal is for real (I stil don’t think it is. Sund is always hush-hush about this stuff), I’m hoping for a lottery pick. No need making the playoffs with a starting 5 of Joe, Teague, T-Mac, Zaza, (insert whatever stiff you want as 5th starter. Will assume Garnett never plays a minute after the trade).

knee tendonitis probably patellar is maybe worse than an acl injury as it can cripple you. he definitely doesnt heal without prolonged rest, not operable and it can come back quickly once the pattern of injury is repeated. basically, it is a chronic overuse pattern injury, not good for the home team. hopefully it is minor but that is what folks always expect it to be but hard to predict or evaluate thouroughly.

At this point….I’d MUCH rather they trade Josh for picks and expiring contracts than try to limp into the playoffs only to be bounced in the 2nd round yet again (assuming they aren’t one and done). Trade Josh and anyone else they can to free up some kind of space, amnesty Marvin, and try again next year. They are stuck with Joe and his contract so I guess you build around Joe, JT, and Al. It’s a better option than being mediocre year after year. They aren’t winning anything with this group.

KG & Josh are so far apart in salary ($9M), and I don’t see Atlanta taking back more salary in a deal.

About the only way I figure it working is the following:

Josh Smith, Marvin Williams &

for

KG & draft pick(s) (Boston has its own pick available, plus the Clippers’ 1st rd pick).

I would actually consider taking that deal if Boston would include both 1st rd picks. As of yesterday, that would be 15th, 21st & 24th picks in the draft, and Boston or Atlanta could end up in the lottery at this point (depending on injuries & additional trades).

Hawks would go in to the offseason with $40M committed to Jeff, Joe, Al & ZaZa, with 3 first rd picks, 2 second rd picks, and right to vets like Garnett, Hinrich, O’Neal, and McGrady.

Ra’mon,

I wish Sund would be stupid enough to trade Josh to Boston in the same conference, lol. Its funny, most of the bloggers on here say to trade Josh. But a CHAMPIONSHIP organization is trying to trade their best asset for Josh. Did I not just say two days ago that Josh is the closest to Garnett in the league?.

Although he is averaging 15 and 8, Garnett is 36 years old,and alot of miles on his bony knees. His only asset to a team like the Hawks is he carries a $21 mil expiring contract.

And which version of Garnett is Josh close to? Certainly not the Garnett in his prime.

And if the Hawks just traded Josh and pieces for Garnett, the Celtics would go further in the playoffs this season, and next than the Hawks..

Both would still lose in the first round, so it would be a wash (imo)..

I really think the only reason ASG gave JJ the contract they did is because (as David Aldridge reported), they were hoping to sell the team in the next year or 2.

JJ has been fairly healthy, but there were articles out there about what happens when SGs hit 30 (its like when running backs get to 30). A guy like Ray Allen might be the exception. Hopefully JJ will get healthy.

If you’re LD and Rick, you probably dont mind JJ being banged up, because an injured Al and an injured JJ probably means both LD and Rick will be given a pass for this year, and will return next year.

Also, with JJ injured, you can eliminate all Kirk Hinrich trade rumors (imo). It will be interesting to see how many minutes T-Mac gets.

Repost FTPB:

If Rick Sund “had played his cards right” the Hawks could be getting a top-tier point guard in Rajon Rondo and future HOFer Kevin Garnett right about now for the proverbial “head-case” Josh Smith, Jeff Teague and filler; hopefully, that “filler” is Marvin Williams. You ask what does “had played his cards right” mean? Well, I’m glad you asked. “Had played his cards right” means the following:

1. Should have re-signed to Joe Johnson to [NBA salary] “fair market value” instead of overpaying him. “Fair market value” for Joe Johnson in my opinion ranges from 4yrs., $68-$74mil. to 6yrs., $96-$100mil. and that could be a little too much.
2. Should not have re-signed and/or overpaid Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia.
3. By re-signing Joe Johnson at “fair market value”, the Hawks’ franchise allows itself to re-sign Jamal Crawford at “fair market value” which is about $8-$10mil. per year.
4. By properly “managing and valuing assets”, the Hawks’ franchise allows itself to pursue a quality, veteran, legitimate big [man] or center such as Marcus Camby or a currently disgruntled Lamar Odom.
5. After acquiring a quality big man, Al Horford can now move to his supposedly “natural” and most coveted position of power forward.

As a result, the Hawks’ new lineup is as follows:

1. PG – Rajon Rondo
2. SG – Joe Johnson or Jamal Crawford
3. SF – Lamar Odom or Joe Johnson
4. PF – Al Horford
5. C – Kevin Garnett

Sixth Man – Marcus Camby or Jamal Crawford/Lamar Odom

If the Hawks go over the luxury tax, so be it. The Hawks now have enough talent to at least make the Eastern Conference Finals as well as enough talent to win an NBA Championship. A deep playoff or championship run for the Hawks could possibly knock [the City of] Atlanta out of the top spot of being notoriously known as “America’s Most Miserable Sports City.”

O’B, the major difference between Josh and Garnett is free throw percentage. Garnett always averaged over 16 shots a game in Minnesota. And only shot over 50% from the field 3 times. With Rivers, Josh will have a defined role, and his scoring and rebounding will improve. This season, Josh is averaging the most shots in his career, and that is only 14.8 a game. I know a lot about Garnett’s game, because he was my favorite player in the NBA for a long time. And it wasn’t until Garnett’s 7th or 8th season that Garnett started knocking down the mid range jumper consistently. The difference on the rebounding numbers is, Garnett never had someone to help on the boards, like Josh has had Al. So his numbers were higher than Josh (remember KG had a terrible rebounding center in Olwokandi). That’s why Josh’s rebounding numbers has increased on the defensive boards with Al’s injury (you have seen many times where Josh would go for a rebound but let Zaza or Al get it-unlike Rodman who would wrestle a teammate for a rebound, lol). I’m not saying Josh is as good as KG. Because KG had his skills while being 7′0, so that was a huge difference. But the makeup of their game is quite similar.

Common Sense

“Wojnarowski said Ainge might be asking teams what they would offer for Rondo in an attempt to determine the guard’s trade value going forward, but that’s different than actively “shopping” him. “Boston’s not doing that with Rondo,” he said, noting that it’s unlikely the guard will be moved this month. “He’s got a very good contract,” Wojnarowski said. “The Celtics re-signed him on a favorable contract that they’re going to use at some point — you’re hoping if you’re Boston that you’re going to use him at some point as part of a package to bring in a big star player. Whether that’s somebody that’s trying to force his way out of another market, whether it’s a Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. That’s the kind of player Boston has pursued in trades and has used Rondo for. That’s what makes sense with him. He’s there to be part of a bigger package for a superstar, for a franchise player. They’re not going to trade Rajon Rondo for spare parts or just to get rid of him. That’s not going to happen.” Added Wojnarowski: “They’re not going to trade him unless they get a superstar back. So, that probably tells you they’re not going to trade him, because that kind of player is not available to them right now.” WEEI.com

Boston Celtics, Trade, Rajon Rondo | share ”
_________________

This is what I was trying to convey to Ra’mon earlier this week. Worjanowski just confirmed some sensibility. At the same time, Josh should not be traded for some old busted up spare parts either. Especially when you’re getting back a player that wants no part of the ownership mess. We don’t need any hostile talent on this roster. Just go get a Real Coach and a true Center, we good.

We really need a Real GM who can scout draft picks, that is our only hope, finding a hidden gem.

Rob, I saw that ESPN Insider rumor, too. I think it would actually make sense for the Hawks. This group has peaked. There is no other conclusion to draw. Making that trade would mean they either get Howard to sign an extension or they lose him and have cap space to start over.

I just cannot stand Dwight Howard, though. I think I would grow to dislike him even more if I had to watch him night in, night out. I do not want him here, even though that trade would make sense.

To me it’s all moot anyways. I do not think the Magic are going to trade Howard. I think they will try to call his bluff. He would be leaving a lot of jack on the table if he walks at the end of the year.

Section 303, I agree. I cant stand Howard either, I just dont think he is that good of a person either. Hell of a player, but I am sure he would walk. I do believe we need to trade Joe to the nuggets for like 4 players or something lol

I would make that Dwight Howard trade just to get rid of Joe contract. Knowing the Hawks they probably throw in a first round pick with all of that.

Start Capt. Kirk at the “2″ and let TMAC sub for him at the 6 min mark of the 1st quarter?

Use Pargo to give Teague a very brief breather…Teague should get 45 mins tonight…Let him play…

Start Ivan and Bring Marvina off the bench….

“303 said this, “We all talk about the Hawks trading for this player or that….maybe they should try and work a trade for the Suns training staff? They seem to work wonders with their players.”

DMB/303, I read that was the reason Grant Hill stayed in PHX..they revived his career. Now, can they help Chills? I can’t say they are miracle workers….their version of Marvin.

Rob, I wish I had the same level of optimism about this being LD and Sund’s last hurrah. As I said earlier, I am okay with tanking this year if it means a fresh approach next year. This ownership group is not one we can count on for good decisions.

Going forward, our 3 captains cannot possibly hold the same value they had in the offseason with maybe the exception of Josh. He is our best option at changing the makeup of this team. I would take KG if it meant moving Marvin along to another culture and see what another coach would do with him. All the coaches on this board have made their case for just moving him, whatever it takes.

If Sund has anything working, I wouldn’t expect it to be that impacting.
He can’t seem to think anything other than any move is a rash move. The guy probably doesn’t even negotiate the deals.

The oldest team in the league is starting to show its age and its expertise.

the boston/atlanta rumor could really work for both sides. there are a few scenarios, but the most common would be:

KG/Rondo/Allen for JJ/JS/MW/JT and one of the vet. min guys.

A) The dollars work.
B) It works for Boston. They keep Pierce and get younger. With Pierce the alpha, the group would have a two year window – maybe three.
C) It works for Atlanta. They get Rondo – who is signed to a very good deal – and shed lots of long-term cash. They build around Rondo/Horford AND have cash to enter the free agent market with only ZaZa signed beyond this year.
D) Both teams would stay competitive this year. Both might even make the playoffs.

That about as good of a deal as you could hope for, really.

“KG/Rondo/Allen for JJ/JS/MW/JT and one of the vet. min guys.” – chuckw/deadjournalist

This is the one option I don’t like:

This amounts to relieving nearly all of the Hawk’s gravy for a few months rental since KG & Allen would not re-sign with the Hawks. Rondo is not a shoot-maker but a play-maker. He would be great if we had some horses but in this trade, they’re gone at this season.

In this scenario, rebuilding would be too costly for the Hawks. Even Sund can’t be that stupid. Thanks but I’ll would pass

I’m glad that the trade chatter is heating up. The Hawks are depleated with injuries and are giving sub-par effort during the games. Add to that LD’s crazy rotations and it is difficult to watch this team.

It would be good that KG & Ray Allen would be rentals because that means CAP SPACE and be rid of the residue that is Marvin Williams. WE also get rid of Joe’s contract and bad contracts in general

Rondo, Al Horford could easily persuade DWIGHT HOWARD to come back home. New coach in the offseasson (Doc Rivers loves Atlanta). That trade would reinvigorate the fanbase.

However I would rather have Rondo and Josh Smith and send Horford packing but I don’t think you can trade injured players.

I’d rather rebuild than see the same team trot out at home and lose to a Curry-less Golden State. Sund needs the Ainge mentality…BLOW IT UP RIGHT NOW

we don’t need shot makers we need play makers…..plus…Ray Allen and KG aren’t finished yes they are older but they know HOW to play…

plus they could get some quality players in here in free agency and not have to settle for Vet minimum players all the time

“Is it just me or has enough things happened this year to finally say let’s break this team up. ”

They should have broken the team up the day after Al got injured. Until Al’s injury, there was the hope, slim as it may have been, that this team would improve with a full year of Teague at point guard enough to challenge the Heat and Bulls. After Al’s injury, that slim hope was gone. Blowing up this team has been long overdue.
