Atlanta Hawks: Warriors 85, Hawks 82
11:32 pm February 29, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- If you didn’t just click on the headline with the score, would you be able to tell which game Larry Drew was talking about when he said this about his offense: “We settled, especially in the first half. I thought we shot way too many jumpers. We cant’ be seduced into taking jump shots. We fell prey. We’ve got to be smarter and understand the flow of the game. It’s one thing if you are making jump shots but, if you are not, then you can’t settle.”
- I’ve been covering this team for 2 1/2 seasons now and Drew (and Mike Woodson before him) could say the same thing about the vast majority of the games the Hawks play. The difference between winning and losing often is the difference between making or missing those jump shots–with the occasional twist, like tonight’s 16 of 26 shooting from the free-throw line.
- A night after the Warriors were blown out by Indiana, they beat the Hawks not with a high-possession, high-efficiency game–which would still be bad but at least somewhat expected–but with defense, rebounding and David Lee and Monta Ellis doing what they do down the stretch.
- The Hawks saw Dominic McGuire, replacing Stephen Curry in the backcourt, collect 15 rebounds while successfully harassing Joe Johnson (who was sore-kneed, but still). The Hawks couldn’t score or rebound against a bad defensive and rebounding team.
- “I’m not surprised,” Drew said. “They are pretty relentless on the glass. You have to get bodies on guys. Lee is a good rebounder. [Ekpe] Udoh is a good rebounder. McGuire, that’s what he does.”
- It’s true that Lee and McGuire are good on the glass. But Udoh is not a good rebounder and collected 8 in 31 minutes against the Hawks. Brandon Rush had eight in 29 minutes, Klay Thompson had six in 29 as Golden State got 18 rebounds in 91 minutes from its bench vs. three in 49 minutes for the Hawks.
- Speaking of the reserves . . . Thompson worked over Willie Green, who still played 21 minutes in small lineups even though he wasn’t scoring. Tracy McGrady, who can rebound and create shots for others (even if he’s still struggling to finish or get calls), didn’t play after a six-minute stint in the first quarter.
- Remember when the Hawks blew all those layups against the Lakers? The Warriors are not the Lakers but they recorded nine blocked shots and the Hawks couldn’t finish against them, either. “I thought we just missed a lot of point blank shots with nobody us,” Johnson said. “It happens. It’s tough but I’m sure we will bounce back and get the next one. This is definitely a tough loss for us because we definitely felt like we should have got the win.”
- Monta Ellis sure likes to shoot a lot of Js. But he supplemented that with lots of post-ups against Jeff Teague, who struggled to hold his ground and challenge once Ellis fired away. Teague had a solid offensive game that could have been better if his teammates made more of the good looks he created.
- McGuire is the latest rangy wing to make it tough on Joe to score. After a 1 for 8 start, Joe made 5 of his next 9 shots. He looked stiff-legged at times. “It got a little stiff, especially in the fourth quarter,” he said. “Other than that, I was pretty good. I wouldn’t say I’m 100 percent but I was decent.”
- “A few times he looked like he was dragging it a little bit,” Drew said. I know the Hawks need to keep winning games but if eight days off doesn’t get Joe to 100 percent then perhaps they should think about sitting him, especially considering his history of poorly managing his injuries. You can’t question Joe’s toughness so he doesn’t need to prove it at the expense of never getting the knee right.
- Drew said Green sprained his back when Lee crashed into him. He didn’t have any details on his status.
- Josh Smith missed 15 of 20 shots while taking too many Js, was sluggish on defense, and could have had more than eight defensive rebounds with better focus. The Warriors encouraged him to face up when he looked like he wanted to post up.
- Marvin Williams missed some open looks. He usually attacks the basket when that happens but tonight he stopped doing that after he struggled to finish when he got there. At least he had five defensive rebounds.
- Zaza Pachulia struggled to finish, too, which is his weakness. But he played to his strengths, too, doing good work on the boards and offering some resistance when the Warriors ventured inside.
- Kirk Hinrich has been iso-happy lately.
- Drew and Johnson each were offered the rust excuse.
- Drew: “It could have been [rust]. One thing is with a few days off, you don’t want guys laying around the whole break. But I’m not blaming it on that. We didn’t play the way we were capable of playing and we didn’t play with energy.”
- Johnson: “Granted, the layoff, but, no excuse, man. They beat us to a lot of hustle plays. They got a lot of easy baskets. We shot a lot of jump shots and we weren’t making them, so it was tough.”

“I can see our guys needed [the break] not just from a physical standpoint but from a mental standpoint,” Larry Drew said. “It’s good to get away from everybody. I’m sure they were glad to get away from me, and now we will look to finish up the second half of the season.”
Yea, I can sure see the difference having the break made tonight.

LD seems to have no control over his players on the court but seems to have a lot of control whom he let’s play or not play which are usually poor decisions. To bad he has no offensive system.

The Hawks need to be wary of blowing opportunities against subpar teams. They are now 2.5 games ahead of the Celtics and Knicks. If the Hawks drop below the 6th seed, it’s highly likely that they’ll have a first round exit from the playoffs this year. Unless, of course, you think that the Hawks will beat either Miami or Chicago in a 7 game series, then you probably agree with me. Luckily, the East has been so weak, overall, this season, that it would take a lot of poor play by the Hawks for the to drop down to the 7 or 8 seed at this point, especially when you consider that their schedule will be lightening up a bit soon.

I’m looking forward to Friday’s game against Milwaukee. Milwaukee is another team that is pretty good defensively, but struggles to score the basketball. They are, arguably, even more devoid of offensive weapons than the Hawks are right now, especially now that they are without Bogut. That should be an interesting game. I’m guessing it will be a “grinder”. The winner of that game will likely be determined by whether or not the Hawks make jump shots, as many of their games ultimately are decided. I’m just hoping Josh doesn’t take 20 shots (mainly jumpers) again. That really needs to stop if the Hawks want to win games on a consistent basis.

As usual, L.D. puts the loss entirely on the players, without accepting any of the blame and without acknowledging any of his mistakes. I can really respect when a coach comes out and admits his own mistakes like a professional. Even Stan Van Gundy isn’t shy about doing that. At least he’s honest.

I would trade Josh for anyone who is a legit NBA starter. Two of every three jump shots he attempts are basically automatic defensive rebounds for the other team. I have no idea if he is smart or dumb, but I do know that he consistently demonstrates that he will make very poor decisions on a basketball court. Perhaps it is misplaced confidence or ego and it is truly sad that someone who could be such a positive force continues to hurt his team. Let’s just accept it for what it is and move on to someone else. I for one am weary of seeing the same errors of judgement on his part.

You have a 6′8 G/F in Tracy McGrady who can see the court better than anybody you have on the team and you only play him six minutes ?? Yet you’re ok with Josh & Joe dribbling the air out of the ball only to jack up bad jumpers ???
This coach doesn’t have a clue and is just happy to have a job…Mgmt has given him a hall pass for this season because of the injuries and because of the lack of $$ they’re willing to spend to upgrade this team..

Take a look at this excerpt from
Zach Klein’s Article on Josh Smith’s Omission from the All-Star Game :
“Recently, I spoke with two NBA coaches and promised their anonymity so they could speak freely about Smith. While both coaches said Smith would, without question, make their team better, both do not believe he is an All-Star yet.
Why?
“He doesn’t play hard the entire game,” said one Eastern Conference coach. “If you break down an 82-game season, he’s an All-Pro for 30, very average for 30 and does not show up to the arena for 20 of them. An ‘All-Star’ does not do that”
The problem, according to both coaches, is Smith’s love affair with the long jumper.
“He takes long two-pointers, which is the worst shot in the game,” said the Eastern coach. “We hope he scores his first two shots, because we know he’ll keep shooting from out there.”
The NBA three-point line is at 22 feet in the corners, 23 feet 9 inches at the top of the key.
Long two-pointers are from 20-22 feet and this year Smith has attempted 71 of them, shooting 36 percent.
Of the other All-Star reserves, all of which are picked by Eastern Conference coaches, Luol Deng took 30 shots from between 20-22 feet. Andre Igoudala attempted 22 and Paul Pierce took 10.
Deng, Igoudala and Pierce combined for 62 long-range two-pointers while Smith has taken 71.
“What that tells you is that he is difficult to coach,” says one Western Conference coach. ”
Now, do you understand why Josh hasn’t been selected to the All-Star team. Was tonight enough evidence of what the coaches are talking about? Josh would be so much better if he played to his strengths or if he had a coach that could discipline him and hone him into doing so.

Yes, Josh really works hard out there…sometimes. He was really working hard tonight when he gave David Lee all the open, high-percentage jump shots. Yes, somebody has to shoot the ball, but should the guy who is shooting under 36% from the field in his last 5 games and 55% from the free throw line for the season really the guy you want leading the team in shot attempts if you want to win? I don’t think so,

I have trouble blaming Teague for the way he plays. He’s totally confused as to what he is supposed to do. He’s really a scoring guard in a point guard’s body. He hasn’t proven that he’s a true play-maker for others, and when he plays to his strengths and is aggressive trying to score the ball, L.D. complains about how he’s playing. I don’t expect much out of Teague other than solid defense with L.D. coaching him.

Rod from College Park,
Discussions FTPB. Don’t waste your time arguing with these “bozos” regarding the value and importance of Jamal Crawford during his tenure with the Hawks. They [the bozos] actually forget that Jamal saved the Hawks in the first round for the past two post-seasons. The bozos forgot that the Hawks were down 3-2 to the Bucks in 2010 going into Game 6 which was an elimination road game. Jamal came off the bench in Game 6 against the Bucks and led the the Hawks in scoring with 24 points. The Hawks defeated the Bucks 83-69 in Game 6 and tied the series at 3-3. Think about it. Jamal scored 24 of the Hawks 83 points in a playoff elimination game. In Game 7 of that same series, Jamal came off the bench again to lead the Hawks in scoring with 22 points and to lead the Hawks to victory. I think the score was Hawks, 95, Bucks, 74; the Hawks eliminated the Bucks 4-3 [or four games to three games]. I believe the Hawks margin of victory was 21 points in [that] Game 7; I could be wrong.
We don’t need to go into what Jamal did in the first round of the playoffs vs. Orlando in 2011. The fact that Jamal led the Hawks in scoring by averaging 20.5ppg off the bench stands on its own merit. The Hawks defeated the Magic 4-2 in that series. Jamal made all kinds of clutch and momentum shifting three point shots as well as two four-point plays in the 2011 playoffs series versus Orlando.
I think this year will be vastly different. I don’t think the Hawks will get out of the first round in this year’s playoffs especially if Al Horford doesn’t return from his injury. The Hawks simply can’t score. I also believe that some of the players that the Hawks will depend on in crunch time will freeze up in the playoffs. Some of these players include Josh Smith, Jeff Teague, Kirk Hinrich and Marvin Williams. The Hawks should not depend on those aforementioned players to make clutch baskets in crunch time.

Eric’s comments are spot on! Osh really does not have a clue! Either he was taking one of his off the mark jumpers………and it was the usual kiss of death when he made his first one…….or he’s now decided he’s effective getting the ball and backing his man down……….which his 5 for 20 shooting proves is not a good idea. Best part of the game…..not really cause I do like to see the Hawks win…….was how the crowd started the nooooooooooo response when Osh got the ball on the wing late in the game and looked like he was going to jack another one.

Say, if you give T-mac another 20 mins to play, the worse that can happen is still another L, which is something the Hawks recently getting from many teams above/below 50% w/l record.

Smith had attempted 202 shots from 16 – 23 feet going into tonight’s game, shooting 32%
Those 202 shots represent 40.6% of all of his shots coming from that range. In other words, for every 10 shots Josh shoots, 4 of them will be long 2 point jumpers.
I wished they kept a stat on how many points a guy via offensive rebounds. Say a guy gathers in 21 offensive rebounds, and scored 30 points off of them. His point per offensive rebound stat would be 1.43 points per offensive rebound.
What I’m getting at, is how many points has Josh scored, when he’s gotten an offensive rebound. I could actually look that up, but it would take coming through the play by play of every Hawks game up until now. When I have a few hours to kill, I’ll look that up.

Isaiah Thomas: 12 points, 4 dimes, 3 boards, 46% shooting, 1.4 3s in the month of February. 19 points, 7 dimes, 4 boards on 50% shooting as a starter. If he was playing in New York he’d probably be getting Jeremy Lin-type coverage. Instead, he’s ballin’ out in Sacramento where only people like me who picked him up in fantasy basketball notice him.
Last pick in the draft, 12 spots after Benson who isn’t even a Hawk anymore, and he’d be by far the best backup PG on the team (and might even have given Teague a run for his money the way he is currently producing). Yet another Hawks draft miscue. Yeah, it’s hard to fault them when every other team passed him up too, but somehow these 2nd round gems never fall into the Hawks’ laps. At some level that is a function of scouting as much as bad luck.

Playing T-Mac, with Tracy playing a key role, would be an omission of incompetence by Drew. So to prevent being wrong, he doesn’t play him and expand his role on the team.
You got a guy who can legitimately play 3 positions, and he’s just wasting away on the bench.
And we’re still losing in the process. Drew thinks that because one thing worked against one team, that he can do it all the time. Just play your most talented people Drew. If you have to play them at multiple positions, so be it.

Anybody who watched the All-Star game can see that Joe Johnson doesn’t look like he belongs anywhere near that game, and he is begin compensated as the best of them. As bad as Woodson was,at least he actually tried to define roles for players.
The first game Jamal Crawford played for the Hawks (can’t remember which team) he was trying to force himself into the Hawks offense. He struggled mightily and after that Woodson pulled him aside and told him to play his game and be aggressive. After that, he went on to be the Hawks leading scorer off the bench, and seemed to be more comfortable whenever he was out there. Minus his putrid defense, Jamal gave us an element off the bench we seldom see nowadays.
My point is this, L.D. is absolutely abysmal when it comes to defining roles, which is why you see Josh taking so many jumpers. One thing good coaches do is they define roles to players according to their strengths and I’m sure if you ask ANYONE (except Josh) what his strengths are, you will not hear the words CONSISTENT JUMPSHOOTER. Again, whenever Woody saw Josh getting jumper-happy, he pulled him aside and let him know about it, because he knew Josh wasn’t utilizing his strengths. And if Josh could not get with the program, he was penalized with less PT. Woodson at least kept his players in check, while L.D. gives them free reign over him.
Also, Teague should look to attack the basket more when he has the opportunity (playing to his strengths). One thing I notice when Teague drives and kicks the ball out, he often kicks out to the perimeter where Josh and Joe are waiting for a jumpshot. Again, this is why I say the Hawks should run more pick-n-rolls, especially with Teague and Josh.
It will take time for Teague to develop into more of a passing PG . He was a score-first PG in college and this is virtually his rookie year, so there are going to be growing pains if you try to mold him into a pass-oriented PG in his first year at the helm. This is also where a true vet PG like a Steve Nash or Jason Kidd could help.
Lastly, I’m tired of L.D. not taking any responsibility for these loses. He can blame all the players on the team, but never want to point the finger at himself. There’s no excuse why TMac only logged 6 minutes, especially with L.D.’s man-crush VRad out. L.D. is holding this team back and the ASG is holding him and the entire team for ransom.

JJ is NOT the highest paid player in the NBA, he is the player that signed the highest contract on that particular summer.
We are treading water right now due an absence of coaching.
LD is hopeless and you cannot expect players who are basically on self management when on the floor to simply “get it” and perform collectively in an effective way.
LD is simply a different version of Woody.
Both are “natural born assistants” who have a limited knowledge of the game on how to manage a roster and the rotations and that’s it.
Many of our players have flaws, but so did most of the players in other better competitive rosters.
CHI, before Thibs was also treading water and now look at them. Regardless of who the put on the floor, the wins come.
It’s not on the players, AT ALL.

YEP! TMac plays a type of basketball which is completely different from LD’s “motion offense” so TMac does not get any burn.
There is nothing wrong with some of the offensive sets which LD introduced. Some of the rotations, backdoor cuts, cross court passing works BUT you can’t do that exclusively.
TMac can post, drive for contact and dish, play the pick n roll and LD seems to dislike that because it makes him look bad (apparently)…

Memo to Jsmoove.
Stop shooting the long ball. You are one of the best rebounders on the team. Given the amount of bricks this ATL team shoots, you are needed down low to snag a few offensive rebounds.
Your game is more suited to low post and fast break offense, efficient rebounding, blocks, and a steal here and there. Every single long jumper causes this ineffective offense to become 10 x worse. Maybe you see a low scoring game game and think, “I guess someone needs to score.” Don’t do it from outside. It is not your game.
Now, on to LD.
Larry Drew has turned into a complete joke of a coach. Coaches need to mold their players according to their more beneficial attributes. Pause… while we check J-Smooves stats this year. Someone sure does have a low 2pt field goal percentage for shots outside of 18ft.
Larry, why don’t you play Tmac a little bit more. He appears to have a bit of knowledge when it comes to running an offense. We have all seen Tmac play a pick and roll game with our bigs that have resulted in a number of shots closer to the basket. I should say this happened earlier in the year, when Tmac was actually getting minutes.
Some time has passed since then, and LD has given Willie more and more time. Willies numbers have gone stagnant after some unexpected hot shooting earlier this year. So now he is playing poorly on offense… at the same time he may as well have his feet anchored to the floor on defense. LD keeps giving him minutes.
So for now, LD likes to play his bench guys that 1. Cannot Defend, 2. Cannot Rebound. 3. Have Zero Inside Game (minus zaza). 4. Cannot Create Offense outside of a long jumper.
Hopefully those trade rumors are true and this team gets blown up. Larry Drew, hope ya don’t coach another game for the Hawks. Take care.

TMac to Dallas now that Odom is wanting out makes too much sense. Hawks should target Roddy Beaubois and Dominique Jones. Jones is the most likely given Dallas’s PG depth. Hawks were high on Jones coming out of college. 6′4″ combo guard with a 6′10″ wingspan. Was top 10 in scoring his last year in college. Top 5 at getting to the free throw line. Measurables were equal to John Wall in size and speed, just didnt have the same leaping ability. Kid needs minutes.

A night of tough defeats all the way around….I got a chance to play the Home Depot Game, during the 1st quarter last night. Lost by $2. Though, I could have given less than a d@mn about any of the items we were playing for.
Hawks were trying to coast last night. I think they thought it was a game they could halfa$$ for a half and then turn it on to get the win. They aren’t good enough to do that. Add in the terrible shot selection, and last night was a debacle. Bad loss. Golden State was a touch above a D-League team last night. Pathetic.
I was most disappointed that Teague wussed out on taking the late 3 point shot last night. Hawks down 2, Teague gets the ball, he’s wide open for a top of the key 3…..afraid to shoot. Drives in and throws up a brick off the back of the rim. I am down on him today for being scared to take that shot.

Thoughts:
1) Do you think Joe Johnson is going to have MORE of these “nagging injuries” throughout the bulk of his insane contract, or LESS, as time goes on? Remember, we have a long ways to go with this contract, and the lighter part of it (if there is such a thing) will have already come and gone by the end of this shortened season. The best part is that the injury topic never even comes to light until it’s affected Joe to the point of where he’s giving you somewhere around 14 or so points per game. Then we get to have the whole conversation about how the injury explains his decreased performance….
2) Josh Smith with another near-useless double double, negated by his horrible shooting against a team that knows very little about defense, despite the continued efforts of Mark Jackson.
3) 38 rebounds by our starting frontcourt. You’d think that this should/would evoke some praise, right? Well, just so happens we STILL lost the battle on the glass to the Warriors and negated it and any other positive stat of any kind by missing a metric ton of jumpers.
4) It’s that time of year again. Teams are movin’ and shakin’, trying to get things done to get better, or at least put themselves in position to get better. The Hawks don’t appear to be one of those teams. Go figure.

It’s the culture of this ballclub. They have a loser’s mentality, but enough pure talent to win more than they lose…but lose when it counts. Change the culture, and change the results. @Section 303…Those are the types of mistakes you’re gonna get from Teague or any player for that matter when you hold them back for two years. As mentioned in an earlier post. Teague is essentially in his rookie year. If had even played more last season he would have taken that jumper last night. GREAT JOB Drew!!!

man enough with blaming others for teague’s mediocre performances. maybe just maybe he’s not as good as some of you think. he’s not a scrub but he’s not a floor general either. i always point back to summer league when teague first came out he hardly dominated against guys that were fringe nba players.
as for the 3 he passed up last night, it was the right move. he didn’t settle for a jumper (which everyone else did last night) and drove it inside the lane and took a tough runner but one i’ve seen him make plenty of times throughout his short career.
as for the calls to trade josh after a bad game. it’s just silly. who do you think wants him and realistically who do you think you’ll get for him. bah!
funniest point in the game last night was in the final seconds josh had a chance to shoot a 3 and the entire crowd groaned. the light has to come on eventually. does it not?

honest_abe, I agree. That was funny when the crowd let out a groan, fearing Josh was going to take the late 3. I wonder if there is another player in the league that gets that type of reaction from their home fans? I can’t think of one.
Games like last night are Josh’s downfall. He blames politics for not getting in the All Star Game. But, coaches clearly see how difficult he is to coach. I do not think Wooden or Drew ever told Josh to jack up fall away jumpers with 16 seconds still on the shot clock (a play that happened last night). Josh just does not get it. Starting to think he never will.
And, I disagree with people on here that constantly say Josh makes up for it on D. He doesn’t. I think many allow his random highlight blocks to impair their judgement. Those plays are great. They are far overshadowed by his bad shots and lazy play.

honest_abe, could not disagree more on Teague passing up the late 3. It was there. You could see him actually thinking about taking the shot. Instead, he drove. Ended up throwing up a contested, falling down floater. It had no chance. The 3 was a better shot. He was just afraid to take it.
In Teague’s defense, he never gets calls. He drove the lane, got knocked, makes the shot, and gets no call. Happens every night.

I may be fool-hearted for following this “rambling wreck” around I-285 (the big circle), but at least I’m not stupid. I didn’t watch this game last night because there were 50 alternate re-runs on satellite to see that were far more entertaining.
I don’t need to read a score box to know that Josh threw up enough bricks to build a Midtown highrise and the Hawks lose. Say what you will about Joe Johnson, but he only takes shots he is capable of making. Like Joe said at he break last season in the middle of Drew’s first year at the helm, “We are all jump shooters, it is what it is.”
That my cohorts is the bottom line. We do NOT have a Real Coach or a Real GM. Every solid football teams builds it roster on the lines first and foremost. Then, look at the skilled positions from there (WR,CB,RB,DB). This team has no center, just a boat load of knuckle heaDS WHO BELIEVE THEY ARE SKILLED JUMP SHOOTERS!.

I really hope the Hawks dont make the playoffs this year so we can get a decent draft pick. No good veterans want to come here.. So we need draft picks..
we always trade away our draft picks and no decent free agents want to come here… somethings got to give..
I use to say this team will be alright.. but this team is to use to losing together, so when they lose, they lose bad..
People that are hoping that Dwight Howard comes here, I doubt it.. Seriously doubt it.. nobody wants to be a hero to a losing team, they want to join another good team. Who would go from Orlando to the Hawks..
But its hard to just be a fan of another team, unless I jump on somebodies bandwagon. and who wants to be a fan of another sorry team.
Trade Joe Johnson and a first round pick for Monte Ellis.. At least bring some excitement to the roster.
stop bringing all these dull veterans who nobody cares about.. If you want new fans, you have to do something new.. ..
Cant keep doing the same old thing and expect a different outcome

We’re so dependent on jumpshots that we’ve completely lost balance in our offensive. Josh is our best post player but he still prefers to shoot jumpers opposed to going to the rim. It appears that the injuries are really starting to cause problems with the rotation and I’m not certain who’s going to be left by the end of the year. LD is clearly struggling with find line-ups that work. Not much to say in terms of solutions, because really effective trades don’t seem realistic. I think LD needs to have a serious talk with Josh about his need to stay in the paint, not because of his love of jumpers, but just to balance the floor.

Larry Drew lost the team as soon as he took over and the players knew that. Thats why they were so happy to have him as a coach cause they would get to keep playing selfish basketball.
There is no reason a team with this much talent should lose to a Golden State team on the road minus one of their star players. Just look at this team:
STARTERS
Teague – Still timid, cant finish at the rim, gives up on defense.
Joe J – 20 mil/yr averaging less than 25 pts? I thought the Star
player was supposed to bring you 30 plus a night?!
Marvin – NO COMMENT.
Josh – The most talented DUMB player in the NBA. I have constant
tried to find another player in the league like him and there
is NONE.
Zaza – Back up C with not much athletic ability. Plenty of heart and
guts but terribly clumbsy.
BENCH
Kirk – They traded away JC2 who is straight ballin and averaging 20
pts per with the Wizards for this guy?
W Green – Pretty much the only pure shooter on the team.
T-Mac – Leadership of the bench. If you are not going to play the
guy, trade him!
Ivan – Feel good story in Atlanta that gets held back by Larry Drew.
Dampier – Management sat on their hands too long and this is what they
got. And he is sitting on the bench not being used!
Vlad – Can someone tell me what he does???
Pargo – Trade KH for anything taller than 6-9 and let this guy follow
up Teague. Atleast his jumper is ok.
Stack – Why is he on the team?
Is there anyway the NBA can step in and take over this organization? I just dont know how much more of this I can take. Absolutely pathetic.
And seriously…WHAT TEAM IN THE NBA WOULD HAVE JOSH SMITH AS A CAPTAIN???! Only in Atlanta.
Larry Drew as a head coach? This guy is way in over his head with this team, but thats what you get when you shopping on the cheap like ASG.

You should never hear a coach say, he as setup plays and his team does not follow them. He should never be quoted as saying the guys started settling for jump shots and the other team took advantage. You are the coach and are ultimately the person held responsible. I fear the guys have stopped listen to him and I question whether he can get them back.
We have a group of guys with a lot of talent but I am not sure if the chemistry is there to make a good team. Jeff has to stop passing the ball as soon as he comes across mid-court He should setup the play and run it. Smoove stands out there and won’t go inside. Part of it is I think he believes he won’t get touches if he doesn’t come out. Al had started to hang around the free throw line before he got hurt. Both seem to think the ball won’t get passed inside and all they will do is fight for rebounds. Zaza has amazing heart but can’t finish and someone should have been sending him to Big Man school every off-season since he has been here where he could work on the fundamentals and post-up moves. Marvin did have one year where he really worked on his outside shot in the off season and start well a couple of years ago. Joe, shoud be able to take over a game at any time and he is not doing it. I could go on but you get the point.
There is no need to hash over all of the observations that have been made here. Coaching plays such a vital part in this and LD does have a staff. What are they doing? What are the practices like and why don’t we do more pick and rolls? In the end, LD is going to lose his job. He seems to have already lost the team.

Danger time for the Hawks.
Home games vs Milwaukee and OKC . . . then 7 of the next 8 are on the road. That’s 10 games. The Hawks could easily go 2 – 8 during that stretch. If they do, that will put us below .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2008.
What will Gearon and the boys do then? Continue to sit on their hands?
How I wish there was a way to pry Pau Gasol from the Lakers for Josh Smith . . . or convince Jersey that Deron Williams will not stay in Brooklyn, and they’d be better off rolling with Joe Johnson.
Wishful thinking though.

So there you have it; the majority of these posts come from people who know that LD’s got to go. Maybe Hawks management is waiting on the numskull owner to sell this sorry excuse of a team. But look on the bright side: at least they didn’t get blown out by 30pts. When I started looking at this game after halftime, they were only down by 10. I said to myself, well, I’ll watch and see if they could come back-if they’re not blown out. Well, they got down by 15 or so, then I said to myself, I think they’ll be blown out. All of a sudden, they were on a run, and it kept me watching (I was about to change channels)-and then they tied the game up. That’s what they came up short at the end. This is my observation: The Hawks have been playing lazy ball-and by sheer talent, they should never be trailing and shooting such a low percentage. It tells me this: most of the Hawks didn’t use the All-Star break to make any personal improvement. ie. such as going to a gym during the 5 day break to, if nothing else-practice your “sorry” ft shooting percentage-that is something that you can control. Work on drills to make you quicker, study film, practice with your fellow teamates. When have the Hawks ever had a “players only meeting?”, probably never-why? because there is no leader on this team. Is Joe a leader? No Josh? Hell to the No!!!, Teague? Yea right. Point is: all followers, no players who can lead. Physically, the talent is there; mentally, no not one. It starts from the top. Why didn’t the Hawks take on Shaq? Because it would have been-Shaq’a team. Does management really want a “leadership” type of guy, who walks the talk-to come into their oganization? No, plain and simple. Look at T-Mac. Case closed. Keep this in mind when trades are made and see who they bring in. They want someone with some talent, who’s not going to question management-and needs a contract-they would be willing to spend what they could cheaply afford-like T-Mac, but without the mouth of discord.

I think you have a point about players better than Josh also having bad shooting nights. But here’s my point about last night: He settled over and over with PLENTY of clock. He’s not a good enough outside shooter to be settling for that instead of taking it inside where his % is so much higher.
I don’t care that he missed 15 shots NEARLY as much as I care that he made the same bad choice repeatedly to the detriment of the TEAM.

*******************
Great observation. And I think that was the main reason why they didn’t bring in a proven coach like Avery Johnson. Avery wanted more control than to just be the basketball coach. He wanted to control basketball operations, which meant that the Hawks would be molded in the way Avery wanted.
The ASG want a bunch of “yes men”, from the coaches to the players. And it’s not only who they brought in as free agents, it’s who they’ve let go. Jordan Crawford is recently starting to play some really good ball lately, but they let him go without blinking an eye, for Kirk Hinrich.
Jordan was a loose cannon type player that simply needed to be taught the game. Drew didn’t have the patience to work with Jordan, so he was expendable in the eyes of the Hawks organization. Flip Saunders was basically letting that guy do anything he wanted, as well as the other Wizards. His shot selection was absolutely horrible. Under Randy Wittman, he’s playing much better basketball and even attacking the rim and drawing fouls. The Wiz have major chemistry issues though, so it hasn’t translated into wins.
As for Shaq . . . lol . . . he would’ve been too strong of a personality for the Hawks to handle. But maybe that’s who they needed to get them out of their comfort zone. Shaq wasn’t a leader . . ever . . but he would’ve shaken things up a little, as long as he stayed healthy.

Orlando is desperate. Trying to get Nash & Ellis, but don’t have the trade assets to pull it off. However, they do have enough to trade for Joe Johnson.
Turkoglu, Reddick & a 2013 unprotected 1st rd pick.
Flip Reddick to Minnesota, or somewhere, for an expiring contract.
Turk can stick around for a couple of years, shoot 3’s better than Joe, and at half the cost over 2 less years.
Then focus on moving Marvin…..for anything.
And yes, I like Turk better than Marvin. At least Turk can make a lay up. Turk shoots 46% from 2. Marvin shoots under 40%. Somethings wrong when you shoot better from 3 than 2.

Just happy to split wins against Orl and GS. Figured Feb. would be worse and they would be hovering slightly above 500.
10-9, 9-10 seems about right for March. 35 win is enough for a playoff spot for the Hawks. Assuming they finis with 10 wins that gets them 30 wins by April.
Would rather have Fasenko the rest of the year instead of Damp. It’s scary how similar Damp and “in shape” Twin really are.

Whoop de freeking do. Marvin stunk last night, just like Joe and Josh stunk last night also. So he had 11 points and 12 rebounds. So what. He actually decided to try and do his job for once. He is actually taller and longer than Josh. He should be rebounding like that every night. He still shot 33% from the field, 0-3 from 3point range, could not finish at the rim numerous times, disappeared in the second half, and missed a key free throw down the stretch. You are a prime example of a typical Atlanta fan. Always settling for mediocrity. Leave Marvin alone. LOL. Marvin is just as responsible for the loss, as Joe Johnnson, and Josh Smith. They both still had better numbers than Marvin, and Marvin had (as you say) a good game, and they can be critisized, what makes Marvin Williams any different.

About Marvin, being a former 2 pick and being shopped without any offers tells you all that’s needed to how much of a failure he’s been here.
This mofo scored 2 points in 49 minutes against Ny and Orl. Not quite as bad a stretch as Biedrins who scored 2 points during a 97 minute span. Some of these clowns (you know who you are) wanted to trade Josh Smith for him some time ago.

“It’s not Marvin’s fault” the Hawks as a team are missing alot of shots. But unlike Josh, Marvin should be knocking down his open shot coupled with his inability to create his own shot kills this team. Marvin’s play produced Josh play (force to be the second option). A reliable shooter in the starting lineup would be a great start until Al returns.

Marvin has to go. Everyone has maintained their play at a high level to some degree these past couple of years.
Small forward is the easiest position to upgrade. The four other starters bring something to the table that is hard to upgrade from. You realistically can’t say this with Marvin, he’s the clear weak link.
There is no player we can get at the 4 or 5 that will make Marvin better. There are many players at the 3 that compliments Josh and Al. It is this simple.

A clear and distinct role for every player would make his limited head coach experience go smoother. If the coach has a vision for how the style of ball he’d like to play and can’t get his players onboard he’s walking toward the unemployment line.
The players have be doing this game the majority of their lives. They know how to compete on the court even when the coaching sucks. Everyone has to shoulder some blame for a team has talented has the Hawks.

Hawks are 38 – 39 in their last 77 regular season games.
Wow.
Other than the 1st round upset vs Orlando, this has been a .500 team for over a year now.”
I said this last year during the latter parts of the year and before our regular season 6 game losing streak. Someone called me out saying we were much better than average, but really, if you aren’t a contender, what does it matter what you’re called?
LD reminds of Bobby Cox and his intuition moves. He puts guys on the court when he has a feeling. We bring in Damp because of no depth and does Damp even play 10 mpg? Why are you complaining LD, when Sund gives you a guy off the couch and you won’t play him? Are you afraid he’s gonna look better than Collins?
This is an organization that is totally frustrating to watch just flounder around out there. Remember Sund said we will go as far as Joe takes us….well, this blog already knows it, but the ASG can’t seem to see the limitation of this team.
And what do you expect from a team getting beat to loose balls and hustle plays when we’re the oldest team in the league!
With the potential for Green out now, who does LD turn to? Yes, VRad over T-Mac….that outburst is going to cost him. LD holds grudges after being called out.
Did JC1 do something to call LD and Sund out to not even get a sniff? I say he sure did, yet no one is calling them on it.

First line of defense on any NBA team that plays Atlanta (1) Give Josh Smith the open jumper, hit the boards and run (2) Do rule no. 1 as many times as you can (3) Give Josh Smith the 3 pointer (4) Do rule no. 3 as many times as you can, get the long rebound and run (5) Act like you’re guarding him and play a sneaky zone (he will shoot). That’s about it and that’s the key to beating the HAWKS.

Here’s the latest on Dwight Howard, who figures to dominate Orlando’s on- and off-court headlines in the coming weeks:
Add the Hawks to the list of potential Howard suitors. Marcus Thompson, while looking for Warriors rumors for the Bay Area News Group, tweets that Atlanta is offering Joe Johnson and Al Horford to the Magic for D12. Howard grew up in Atlanta and went to high school at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. Thompson notes that Howard and Hawks forward Josh Smith are friends.
Howard wants the Magic to pursue Steve Nash, and would consider staying at least another year in Orlando if the team can acquire Nash and re-sign him, according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld. Of course, given the Suns’ current stance on their point guard, such an acquisition would be a challenge.

According to Chris Broussard from ESPN.com:
Kaman will almost certainly be moved. New Orleans has no use for him and simply wants to get something — even if it’s just a second-round draft pick — for him, according to sources. A month ago, when the Hornets told Kaman to stay home and wait to be traded, they were asking for a young player, a draft pick and an expiring contract. Now, their aspirations aren’t so lofty. Golden State, Houston and Miami have interest in Kaman.
SUND….Now would be the time for the Hawks to drop Kirk an Zaza or Marvin on their plates!
Portland is now, according to sources, once again willing to part with Gerald Wallace. Back in December, talks between the three teams had Wallace joining Lopez in Orlando. …. The two Blazers who are virtually untouchable are LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum. With the Blazers struggling, everyone else is available, particularly Felton and Wallace.

Why do fans even waste their time watching this useless team? We all know they will be a first round exit, maybe second round if they seed high enough. It’s just hours/days of our lives wasted watching a horribly coached group. Then we pout and cry on the message boards to make changes that they will never do, and argue at each other on why they suck so much. Either because it’s Josh Smith’s stupidity, Jamal Crawford’s absence, Larry Drew’s incompetence, and the list goes on…
Do you seriously think they are just going to finally ‘get it’ and start driving to the basket? You think they are finally going to get it and rebound? No. Not now. Not until this organization gets an overhaul.
At they end of the day, this organization is going nowhere. Why? For they have crappy ownership, management, and coaching. I mean, they have TMAC for Gods sakes, and they never use him right!
The only sports team in ATL with a good owner and management staff is the Falcons. That’s why coaches get let go and better ones are hired. The arrow for that organization is always going up. Where the Braves and Hawks are either plateaued or going down. That’s why the teams never sell out home games. The management have no clue what the fans want.
Good luck wasting your lives posting on this board and watching this team for the rest of the year. It’s like dating a woman who you know is going to break your heart. In the end, it’s your fault for accepting the mediocrity.

I don’t see Josh taking so many asinine jumpers as a 3. As a matter of fact he takes better shots.
Why is that?
A) Given the amount of bricks this ATL team shoots, Smith+PF+Pachulia is way better with size advantage snagging a few offensive rebounds.
B) low post and fast break offense, efficient rebounding, blocks, and his size clogs the passing lanes getting us a steal here and there.
C) he gets a steal and he’s on the wing with maybe 1 guy to beat. Remember the crossover and dunk on Luol Deng? That happened at PF. And 30 lbs ago.
Smith is a SF. If he plays PF he cant post up 1/2 the NBA PFs and starts shooting jumpers.

What the hell happened to this MC? Now we have Josh tryna be Rashard Lewis.
Coach Drew speaks of having “interchangeable” pieces on this team, and this leads off into the discussion of possibly playing Josh Smith at the small forward position at times.
“He has the ability to erase a lot of defensive mistakes because of his athleticism. I won’t match him up against a lightning-quick guy where he would have to defend multiple screens. But he certainly will be able to play some 3. At the same time, he can be a tough matchup at the 3 as well. You play him at some 3, there is a high probability he is bigger than that three man, stronger than that three man. Certainly the way to take advantage of that matchup is to post him up. We will certainly try to utilize his ability against a smaller guy. It won’t necessarily be about us adjusting to what the other team does. We want to put the opponent in a position where they have to match up with us.”
You play him at some 3, there is a high probability he is bigger than that three man, stronger than that three man.
Well guess what.
David Lee was bigger and stronger than Josh Smith.
Dominic McGuire was bigger and stronger than Joe Johnson.
Monta Ellis was bigger and stronger than Jeff Teague.
Those are your key players!! Were you wanting Kirk, Marvin, and Zaza to bail you out?
You’re either incompetent, complicit with Gearon/Sund in your lineups Larry Drew. Give Josh Marvin’s spot by starting Ivan and start winning games.

Slim, didn’t LD just tell us the guys were sick of him at the AS break?
Someone did anyone else see LD act differently last night than any other game this season?
So now we have Josh making excuses for the coach’s decision-making?
I have to think that things have to be done differently to get different results, but it doesn’t look like that has been considered as of yet.
And glad that we signed Damp for the remainder…I sure would like to see him for more than the 5mpg he is getting now.

Just saw on sportscenter that Forbes has listed Atlanta has the most miserable sports city in the country…
They had T.I. on and asked him his thoughts. Dude put it on all the executives. Also gave justification regarding low attendance numbers, cited that there are other things that go on in Atlanta and ultimately said that there are no superstars.
He’s dead right on the superstars argument.

And do you remember the Blazers STILL losing those games and the series? D12, Josh, and Zaza in the same front court would win the rebounding battle nightly. Right now, who is helping Zaza when Josh is outside watching his jump shot? Our offensive rebounding is about as putrid as it can get…..we have to lead the league in 1 and outs.
And Josh and D12 downt he stretch would be hard to watch missing FT after FT. You think our team % is low now? Wait til we throw D12 in the mix!
And note, both Duncan and Robinson are career 69% FT shooters. Josh career: 66% and D12: 59%

KevinM, I disagree. With D12, Josh would want to bang in the lanes even more. Say what you want but on the block, Josh does demand a double team. So if you surround D12 and Josh with perimeter players who can feed the posts and knock down open shots, then you have a good offense. I just don’t believe LD could successfully coach a team with D12 and Josh on it, because he wouldn’t have the credibility to do so. However, you bring in a coach like JVG with that front line, and you would have something serious. Remember Van Gundy’s relationship with Ewing?

KevinM, to be honest, going forward, I believe Josh will be a better rebounding machine than Al will. As I keep pointing out, last season the difference for rebounding between the two were on the offensive glass, where it was Al’s responsibility to crash the boards, not Josh’s. On defensive rebounds, Al averaged 7.0 rebounds, and Josh averaged 6.8 virtually the same. The difference was it was Josh’s responsibility to get back on the defensive end to deter any fast break attempts by the opposition. This season, Josh is averaging 7.7 boards on the defensive glass. That number is higher than Al has ever average. If Al was already drifting away from the lane on offense, I can’t see him going back there to put up career numbers.

I don’t see Josh’s game ever going back to full time PF despite that is where his success is. Please tell me what highlights has Josh put up since he starting spending all that time on the perimeter?
This is no longer the highlight factory; it has been dragged down to bad 1/2 court sets with a motion offense that ends up with a jumper or a mishandled dump down to Zaza.
Would I like to see JT and D12? Sure, but we are probably better off having Al at the 4 instead of Josh at the 3. If ORL wanted Josh and Joe, just say yes and worry about the implications later.

Name any high flying PF’s that didn’t get a serious injury within 6-7 seasons? Stoudamire, McDyess, Kemp did about year 8th. You can’t have a successful career playing that style of basketball. That old video of Scalabrine vs Josh is 3 years old I believe.

This scouting report is old. Use size to frustrate Josh and keep him outside. Play him to his right hand.
Play big, he’s 225 lbs. dont let him back you down. Keep him off boards.
So if he cant back you down what happens? Jumper city!
We never have the better matchups throughout our whole starting lineup. Just read MC’s hints he drops in his report how many times he mentions “size” or “small”
But the absolute scariest part about Josh and saddest thing about being a Hawks fan is that Josh Smith led the team in +/- with +8 last night.
Marvin 41 minutes -7. Small bench guards negative numbers. McGrady negative numbers. Ivan at center negative numbers.
Now Dampier is back try bigger lineups.

Tell that to Grandad and LD. Tell him Josh should take Marv’s spot and that he does nothing good and find a PF who can hit a jumper.
Josh Smith led the team in plus minus yesterday (+8). Followed by Teague (+7)
Marvin -7.
Then as a fan I have to go on the 1st page and read Grandad talk about Marvin would never go 5 for 20. THAT’s THE PROBLEM. HE CANT GET HIS OWN SHOT!
That’s the saddest part of this team. Dumb coaches and fans who wont admit Josh is human and admit he doesnt have advantage in the post. And wont adjust accordingly.

KevinM, who was the last highlight factory PF to win a title? Go ahead with the answer, I’m waiting….. Josh has been trying to work on his jumper to prolong his career.”
Ra’mon, you better not represent Josh, because based on his strengths/weaknesses, your justification just lost your client millions of bucks. So why should we resign a guy who is content with playing on the perimeter, while the perimeter is the part that makes him a weak player?
It doesn’t make sense; Josh isn’t a SF, and him dropping that weight didn’t help any. He is the same guy as last year with or without the 20 lbs.
No way would I resign him and continue to watch what we have been watching….if that is his desired position, then we have 2 SFs we have to get rid of. Josh is not Luol Deng.
We definitely miss Al more and more every day.

The Hawks would have 2 bangers in the post, the reason Ivan have not look good lately is because of Woody Jr. lack of playing time for Ivan, we all no Ivan have skills but he must warm up to the game, JUST REMINISCING BACK TO LAST YEAR WHEN TEAGUE ONLY PLAYED 5MIN A GAME AND LOOK BAD, JUST DAM.

KevinM, I didn’t say Josh should play consistently on the perimeter. But I did say he does have to have a decent mid range shot, to be able to play in this league in his mid 30s. And by the way, the ’same old Josh’ as you mentioned averaged a double double for the month of February. And he shot close to 40% from the 3 point line in the same stretch. And when you say Josh isn’t Deng. Well, Marion wasn’t Deng. But in his prime, I’d take Marion over Deng any day.

A decision has to be make concerning the 3 spot. Either start TMac or make a trade for a SF. Scoring SFs are a dime a dozen in the NBA. The Hawks have Kirk, Marvin, and two 2nd round picks as trade assets. At this point, a Center is NOT an option. The Hawks cannot score, but scoring help can be found!
Next year, fire LD and make a big trade using one of your core players!

LMAO thats the point. Do you know Luol Deng has a worse FG% than Josh Smith? The guy is as likely to set a pick and roll as he is to come off a screen.
No post up game and average athleticism. Josh also plays the passing lanes better than Deng. Josh’s steal % is higher.
Josh Smith is a SF and a bunch of you’re too stubborn to admit it and give him a break.
AS IF Josh Smith isnt better than Deng. Oh but Deng does average a Marvin Williams esque 3 point % and 1 3 pointer a game. smh

During a stretch of 4 games from Jan. 29th through Feb. 4th, Ivan averaged 23.5 minutes, 9.5 points and almost 8 rebounds per game playing primarily as backup center. During that stretch, the Hawks out-rebounded 3 of 4 opponents. In the 7 games that followed, Ivan averaged 8 minutes, 3 points and 2 rebounds. In those 7 games, the Hawks were out-rebounded by 6 opponents. Against Chicago, Ivan played 2 minutes and the Hawks were out-rebounded 51-41.

I think the Hawks, should take the 1st round pick from Lakers for Kirk if that’s the only deal they can get. And attempt to move both of their 1st round picks for Kendall Marshall! I really believe Marshall is EXACTLY the floor general the Hawks need, even with Joe, Josh, and Al. Similar to what G’Dad said, Teague could come off the bench for a combo guard. Marshall would average 10 assists a game with those three. My opinion may be bias as a HUGE Tar Heels fan (love UNC way more than the Hawks, lol), but Marshall would do wonders for this team. I see Marshall as Deron Williams without the scoring.

Who is more delusional Dim Frank Wren or Dumb Rick Sund? I live in the San Francisco Bay area but am a native Atlantan. The Warriors suck. They have sucked for years. Despite the fact that no one held a gun to my head, I decided to tune in to watch the Hawks last night for the first time this season. My gosh, what a terrible basketball team. Same as it ever was with these cupcakes, they get out-worked on the boards, can’t shoot, miss free throws and make mistake after stupid mistake, made by the one of the league leaders in stupidity, Josh Smith.
Let’s see, in one 3-5 minute stretch in the 4th quarter, I saw Smith throw up brick after brick, saw him miss free throws, saw all star Joe get his pocket picked for an easy bucket on the other end, saw Marvin Williams (don’t get me started) play his usual deficient game and saw no one that could get his own shot and make it when it was needed. Same team, same as it ever was.
That’s where the reference to delusion comes in- with both Dim and Dumb, you get the same pablum, e.g., we don’t really need to make significant changes, our teams are solid. Yeah, right. Braves all time chokers and Hawks as always, simply irrelevant. Bring on March Madness……

Weaknesses: Moultrie seems to have transitioned from a SF to PF this season, sacrificing continued perimeter development in the process. Being that he’s not a true post option, he’ll likely see time at both spots on the next level.

Smith had 30 points, 17 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocked shots. According to Elias Sports Bureau, only one other player has reached those levels in all five statistical categories since the NBA started officially recording blocks and steals in 1973.
LeBron James, playing for Cleveland in 2007-08, had 31 points, 19 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and three blocks in a double-overtime game against Charlotte. James played 49 minutes, 36 seconds while Smith played 44 minutes, 41 seconds against the Suns.

Josh Smith is a homeless version of Scottie Pippen/ a bigger version of Andre Iguodala. Only a retard (Gearon,Woody,Sund) would go this long and play him as the 2nd coming of Rashard Lewis (ironically Rashard Lewis used to play SF).

Slimjr is right. I’d rather have neither one of them on Durant.
The Josh at SF next to a shooting PF theory makes sense on offense, if you have a coach who is going to force him to get in the post every possession. But Josh at SF takes him away from the basket, where his defensive impact is most pronounced, and hurts the overall team defense unless the Hawks acquire a shot blocking center. Josh doesn’t have the lateral quickness to stay with Durant off the dribble.

Josh Smith watched Monta Ellis go into the lane and he was right in the lane. Thats an idiotic basketball stereotype.
A) scorers drive to the basket; some are so quick that Josh cant come in help.
B) Remember the block on J-Rich (@SF).
How about when MVP tried to iso and ended up with a 2 handed block on Derrick Rose (Josh @ SF despite being 250 lbs)
Josh could be the best shot blocking wing in history. How about that Grandad? You buying that?
Its funny because Marvin is slower than Josh but that never comes up.
We go back in history and see the times when Josh Smith played SF & its astonishing how off people are. He passed up shots to feed the post. He tried to feed JJ and crash. He blocked shots. He got dunks. He got steals. He got rebounds.
Give me Iguodala on steroids (Josh @ SF) instead of Barkley’s anorexic brother (Josh @ PF/C).

cnnsi power rankings; Hawks at 13.
Because the Hawks were 7-1 in games decided by five points or less, they finished the first half 20-14, despite scoring only three more points than the opposition. This blend of grit and luck partially compensated for the absence of Al Horford, but as the injuries mounted, the situation began to fray in February. By the final week before the break, Atlanta was giving minutes to Jerry Stackhouse and Erick Dampier, while Tracy McGrady — a youngster by comparison — was agitating for more playing time, and Joe Johnson’s sore knee combined with the snubbing of Josh Smith meant that no Hawks played in the All-Star game..

Rod, while I totally agree that most fail to acknowledge Josh’s amazing blocks, BPG has NOTHING to do with 7 years in the league, since it’s measured BY THE GAME. It’s just total blocks, divided by overall games played, regardless of years.
Total blocks is where the “only 7 years, so far” should come into play.

Josh Smith is not as good as Nique but I feel only players will appreciate how good this guy was. All because people want Smith to be the next Charles Barkley (he wont be, he put on weight and busted his knees) instead of a bigger better Iguodala (small forward).

Would Josh Smith need to average 20ppg to play the 3?
16ppg + 9rpg + 50FG% (good TS%) + 2apg; HoF defensive rating for a 6′8 player
thats better than Luol Deng and Andre Iguodala and there teams win.
Deng and Iguodala actually are shooting worse %’s than Josh Smith on the season.
Its not about PPG its FG%. And we could win games in the 90ppg range if we played 2 big men + Josh.
2 big men + Josh. is elite
2 big men + Deng. is elite
2 big men + Iguodala. is elite
1 big man + Josh + Marvin = slap yourself Smith’s a Guard-Forward who cant shoot.
1 big man + Deng + Marvin = slap yourself Deng’s a Guard-Forward who cant shoot.

and by “cant shoot” I mean small ball (unable to post up most big men) demands you be able to shoot the 3.
Josh Smith is not a shooter and Lamarcus Aldridge,Kevin Love, that guy from PHI, and now David Lee have given him fits with their size.
Half the time Josh drives to the paint he cant score. Or they learn to force him right.
Who are these critics who keep telling Josh to drive around these big fellas? Its like telling Derrick to post up and playing him at shooting guard. Out of position.

Another wishful thinking trade. More realistic than the first one I posted, but it’s still tough to imagine a scenario where another team is willing to take on Joe’s contract.
I believe the Hawks would have enough cap space to offer Dwight a max deal in the offseason under this scenario. Could re-up Gordon and KG and run a lineup of Rondo/Gordon/Marvin/KG/Dwight out there if that happened.

One weird statistic about Marvin:
He’s 2nd in the NBA at rebounds per 48 minutes among SF’s at 10.8. Matt Barnes is first at 10.9
I mean Marvin averages more Boards per 48 minutes than LeBron, Durant, anybody else.
He’s 7th currently in rebounds per game for all SF’s in the NBA at 5.5, regardless of minutes played. That’s out of 30 teams in case your counting (and some may not know).
Not defending Marvin at all – just keeping it real. Doing some stat checks on the Hawks tonite and noticed this. Weird really if you ask me. Dearth of SF’s in the NBA right now I guess.

If your team is constructed correctly, your small forward should not have to rebound. Durant and Lebron don’t have to crash the glass to get defensive rebounds. The PF, and center handle rebounding. SF should be out on the break running the wings. Part of the reason you see Durant and Lebron on the other end of ally oops. Marvin’s rebounding # are a function of how poorly constructed the Hawks are. Really means nothing else.

Draft Fab Melo, and John Jenkins who will plug two big holes on this team.
Fab Melo a Tyson Chandler type player for Syracuse, thrives in a zone D so will definitely struggle adjusting to man to man, but his 7 foot big bodied frame along with his defensive mindset makes him EXACTLY what we need, valuable.
John Jenkins kid is a pure stroker, could come in and hit 5 threes at anytime and would be a huge ‘under-control’ contributor off the bench similar to JC2 but mild mannered.
Also quite a few quality bigs who could give us depth for once at the C position that will no doubt fall to the second round. All this is speculation and personal preference.

Elton Brand – should not be on this list; *[except for his college yrs]

Caldwell Jones – couldn’t leave off 1 of the Jones brothers from Albany
AK-47 – lock down defender
Dale Davis – gets a mention due to his rebounding

Elvin Hayes – In my opinion; the all-time greatest [4] pwr forward
Dwight Howard – and somewhat *over-rated

He does not rebound, comparitively, with the great Centers;

Passing; setting up teammates; running the offense; running;

athleticism and shooting.
Shooting can come around with Hard Work.
Athleticism – you`re born with it or not.

I’m so tired of critics being naive in terms of the game of basketball. Some people think that because a player averages a lot of blocks per game that it automatically indicates that he is a great all-around defender. That’s not always the case. In fact, most of the time, a high shot-blocking total indicates that a player is a great help defender or weakside shot-blocker. These players don’t typically get those blocks from individual 1 vs. 1 defense, they get them from help defense. That does not mean that the player is necessarily a good or great individual defender by any means.
Why am I bringing this up? I’m bringing it up to help people understand Josh Smith’s defensive presence better. Josh is a great help-defender in the paint, particularly when it comes to rotating over from the weak side. However, he is not a great individual defender, especially in the post. He’s definitely an active defender most of the time, but people are confusing help defense with individual defense when it comes to Josh. There are areas where he excels on the defensive end, and one of those areas is covering up for mistakes of his teammates by contesting or blocking in the paint through help defense. One of the areas where he does not excel is in the post, when it comes to defending equally-sized or bigger and stronger players. You can look through the game footage throughout the years if you don’t believe me.
One of Josh’s biggest issues defending in the post in the past is that he would too often gamble and try to poke the ball away for the steal, thereby giving his man an easy spin past him and often an easy hoop, or he’d have to bail the guy out with a foul to recover. Also, against some of the stronger and more adept post scorers at the PF position, Josh especially struggled. I’m talking about guys like Luis Scola, who has dominated Josh in the paint quite a bit in recent history over the past couple of years. Guys like Boozer (when he actually used to post up), Scola, Randolph, Aldridge, Amare, Duncan, and even David Lee can often overpower Josh in the post and score fairly easily. This is one of the reasons why Woodson used to cross-match defensively and often put Horford on the opposing team’s PF if the PF was more of a scoring threat in the post than the center, because he knew Josh had trouble defending some of the stronger post players, and Horford has always been a better individual defender in the post.
Now, with this understanding, I can see why some people argue that Josh should be playing at the 3. However, I don’t necessarily agree if Josh is going to be defending the 3 position exclusively. He can be pretty effective against some of the league’s SFs, especially ones that like to isolate to score their points or guys who attempt to post him up at the 3, since he will almost always have a size/strength advantage at the 3. Still, you have to keep in mind that defending on the perimeter is very different from defending a traditional big man. To defend at the 3 full time would require Josh to be capable of chasing the quicker perimeter SFs who know how to move without ball around the court and fight through screens. Josh had shown quite a bit of difficulty when he’s had to do so, as it is quite exhausting for someone who is used to playing at the 4 to fight through screens and run around the perimeter for an extended period of time. This would likely force the Hawks to switch on pick-and-rolls where Josh was the target of the pick.
Individually, I think Josh would be a liability on defense on some nights if he were to defend at the 3 full time. Also, this would move him further away from the basket and make his defensive presence less effective as a weak-side shot blocker. Say what you want, but it’s a lot more difficult to rotate over from the 3 point line to the basket to help out than it is to rotate over from 10-12ft. from the hoop. Josh would not only have more difficulty and be gambling more to help out with those blocks, but he’d also be expending more energy on the perimeter, defensively, which would likely cause him to be less effective, overall, as the game wears on.
Josh is not a great individual defender on the perimeter or in the post, but on most nights, I think he’d be more effective defending at the 4, provided that he is not facing a physically imposing individual match-up. Josh has the length and athleticism to challenge shots in the posts if he is able to stay disciplined and time his contest correctly, whereas he does not have the physical ability to stay with the quicker and more agile perimeter SFs in this league.
With that analysis, I firmly believe that while, overall, Josh is a very good defender, he is not an elite all-around defender like guys like Rodman who some people are comparing him to. Josh is an average-to-good defender in the post, and a slightly below-average defender on the perimeter (this is not an insult for a big man, compared to most big men, he is well above average when it comes to defending on the perimeter). Josh’s greatest asset as a defender is his help defense and weak-side shot blocking. He is a great help defender, not a great individual defender. Rodman was a great all-around defender. Comparing Josh to Rodman is asinine. Rodman is guy who could basically defend any position on the court by himself. He had the quickness, agility, and speed to defend perimeter players, and he had the strength and discipline to defend bigger players in the post and knew how to push guys off of the block before they received the ball. Remember, this is the guy that defended against one of the most physically-imposing and skilled PFs the game has ever seen (Malone) in the post, and then also was able to give perimeter scorers fits with his defense. Please do not compare Josh to Rodman. While they may be similar in size, they were very different as players. Rodman was maybe the greatest all-around defender the NBA has ever seen, but was extremely limited on the offensive end. Josh is a great help defender and a decent/solid offensive player.

One trade suggestion (not rumor) that I saw out of Minnesota is Hinrich & Marvin for Brad Miller, Wes Johnson, and Luke Ridnour.
It’s one of those deals that neither team gets all excited about, but could turn out well as a “change of scenery” for Marvin and Wes. We’d save about $3M this year, but would have the same $’s committed to Ridnour and Johnson next year, as we would to Marvin. The year after, they would actually earn more as long we pick up Johnson’s option.
Same goes for Minny. Same or less salary committed over the next two years. Any way you look at the stats, Marvin is an upgrade in size and production over Wes.
Hawks fans would be hoping Joe Johnson could show Wes how to play the big 2-guard role.

G’dad, all of Marshall’s positives are what the Hawks don’t have right now. And all of his weakness (athleticism and shooting) is what they actually have too much of right now. I see him, and I think Jason Kidd without the defense. When Kidd came in he was a horrible shooter. Now he’s in the top 3 in history. Marshall just seems like a guy who commands respect soon as he steps on the floor because of his demeanor. As I said, I would trade the Lakers’ and Hawks’ draft pick to move up to take him.

Dawgs Man,
The problem with Josh is that he is the only person on the court that thinks he can shoot. Other teams play Atlanta with a game plan and that is to bait them into shooting jumpers.
Remember how back in tha day when people played street ball or at the park? There was always that “guy” that had that awful jumpshot and whenever he got the ball, the opposing team would yell out “thats off” or “brick!” or “broke shot!”
He (that guy) would take offense and in a sense have something to prove and keep shooting anyway while at the same time discouraging the other 4 teamates and causing a riff or disruptance in the offense.
That is Josh Smith!

I can’t believe I’m asking this question, already, but…is JJ’s best years already behind him?
1) He turns 31 this year

3) He missed 10 games last year (most since 2006), and he is dealing with tendinitis this year, which seems to be a nagging injury
I think his best years are behind him, which makes his remaining 4 years, $90 mil contract a tough sell for any team.

“Jamal Crawford was 8-16 last night (0-5 from 3),with 18 points, 4 assists, 5 turnovers. Raymond Felton must really be struggling, because JC1 started at PG.”
Joe Johnson last game he was 6-17 (2-7 from 3), with 18 points, 2 assist and 3 turnovers. Jamal was off a back to back. Night before he was 8-15 (5-9 from 3), with 21 points, 5 assist and 1 turnover. One guy makes 20 million, and the other guy makes 5 million. You add it up. Also we all know here Jamal should not be running the point, but Raymond Felton, (one of Marvin Williams teammates), came in out of shape, and has been horrible this year, thus Jamal takes his job.

I sure would….I think we could fill the void maybe not this year, but once Al returns…we then can determine if O’Neal is needed.

Melvin,
You don’t think his skills are declining despite the fact that his scoring, assists, rebounding, and FG% are all down?
Speaking of rebounding… He is 26th in the league at rebounding per 48 minutes. 26th. Despite being 6’7”, 240 lbs. One spot above him? Jordan Crawford.
What was interesting to me is despite having Bynum and Gasol (both good rebounders), and despite using up so much energy on offense, Kobe is still 4th in the league at rp48 minutes for his position. JJ needs to step it up.
Rod,
Imo, JJ is a much better player than Jamal. But Jamal at $5 mil is a much better value than JJ at $20 mil. It’s hard to believe that Marvin is making almost twice what Jamal makes lol.

From the link High-sider posted;
With the Big Three’s window now shut, Ainge is trying to land Atlanta’s Josh Smith and other young studs, while offering up Kevin Garnett. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen can also be had, for young players and draft picks. Rajon Rondo might be leaving, too, with the Lakers and Utah seen as possible destinations..
I think Josh Smith would florish under a coach like Doc Rivers. But why would the Hawks trade Josh and filler for Garnett whose contract is expiring this year?

Rondo is a winner; it’s pure rumor (Stephen A Smith), that Danny Ainge has been or is “shopping” Rondo. Remember, four years ago-they were saying that this is Rondo’s team. Josh will flourish under Doc-that would probably be the best thing that would happen to his selfish career-this kid better get it now, before he’s an old dog that won’t learn new tricks. As for what the Celtics give the Hawks-I don’t think Garnett would want to come to this cesspool of a team; he’d just a well retire. The big three has become the “old three” and they all would rather retire, than to be coached by LD. The Hawks wouldn’t even get close to a draft pick for those aging nba vets.

The more I think about Marvin Williams and Raymond Felton on that 2005 UNC [Men's Basketball NCAA Tournament Championship] team, the more I feel that championship run was a fluke. I say this because Marvin Williams and Raymond Felton are struggling mightily right now. That [UNC championship] team had [I think] Sean May, Rashad[sp.?] McCants, Jawad Williams, Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton and some other player I can’t recall at the moment. There has to be another player because I only mentioned five players and Marvin [Williams] didn’t even start on that team. That UNC team beat the Illinois Illini in that championship game; I believe the Illini had Deron Williams, Luther Head and Dee Brown. Part of me is cool with UNC winning the championship that year because I don’t think I could’ve stomached[sic] Roy Williams crying on nationwide television [again] in a post-game interview after [another] loss in a championship game like he did when Kansas lost to Syracuse back in 2003. That was pathetic. After being asked, if he was going to be the [Men's Basketball] Head Coach at UNC after Kansas lost to Syracuse, Roy Williams, with tears in his eyes, responded, “I don’t give a sh-t [expletive] about North Carolina right now.” Roy Williams used profanity on national television without any repercussions or consequences. smh
That’s why I see collegiate athletics as coaches’ leagues and professional athletics as players’ leagues.

The trade rumor train also has Kirk Hinrich and Josh Smith going to the LA Lakers for Pau Gasol and Darius Morris. I think this trade will work-as Al Horford returns and Pau and Al would be a good frontline according to b/r. The Hawks have to look at this in their quest to go big. Uncoachable Josh would have too much pressure to be coachable in the bright lights and big movie-star city as the Lakers try to add pizzazz to compete with their new competitors, the LAC. Just sayin…

I just feel that the hawks got 3 sf’s (josh, marvin and joe) and we need a center the only one we can get value from is josh because his up side we need him but due to bad managment we have no true center and alot of money on one player that is getting old we can get a seconed rounder for marvin n a bench player not a good one joe cant be moved so that leave josh if we play are cards right we can get a center or a couple of good players for him but we will see by the 15 of march

So Ra’mon, a guy who can’t get to an AS game is the next version of Garnett in the East? I think you like his perimeter game. Josh is more like Kirilenko than he is Garnett. Josh doesn’t have the wing span he needs to have to compare to KG. If Boston wants to pay Josh +15M, let them…..I can’t see that being good for them. Now, I’m not coaching him, but I’ve think we’ve seen the best of Josh. He has 3-5 good years left.
You don’t think Boston is leveraging for Josh to maybe induce to D12 to consider them? Hmmmm.

This team is in need of a serious upgrade at point guard. When the Celtics are listening to offers for Rondo; why don’t we offer them Teague and Marvin. The money is about the same, and the Celtics want to get younger, and will need a pt. guard and a good small forward. Marvin has worn out his welcome, and an attitude change is needed. This will take some of the pressure off of JJ and the rest of the offense. Maybe Smoove will actually move inside where he should be, and start going to the basket more.

Kevin, how would Boston be leveraging Josh for D12, when they would be giving up majority of their cap space to get Josh? And do you not know how much the fans in Minnesota used to hate Garnett and the fact that he couldn’t win? If Doc Rivers is Josh’s coach, Josh will end up being an MVP candidate within 3 seasons. The numbers Garnett put up in his first season in Boston, there’s no way Josh couldn’t put up those same numbers. And if the Hawks just traded Josh and pieces for Garnett, the Celtics would go further in the playoffs this season, and next than the Hawks.

With Willie Green nursing a bad back, What’s the chances that Larry ” Dufus ” Drew brings Hinrich and Vlad off the bench before Tracy ??
I still can’t get over the fact that Larry ” Dufus ” waits til the 2nd quarter to bring in Tracy…doesn’t run any effective plays for him and then only plays him for less than 10 minutes ???
Everybody knows that Tracy should be running the offense when he’s either with the first unit or second unit and that he should be getting AT LEAST 10 shots per game…Tracy has been a career 44% scorer for majority of his career. he’s the type of player that If he misses his first 2-4 shots..he’s going to hit the next 4 shots consecutively in a row….LD YOU HAVE TO GIVE HIM MINUTES..SHOTS..AND LET HIM PLAY HIS GAME ..the proof’s in the stats when he gets significant minutes…everybody around him gets open quality shots because he knows how to read the defenses and make the correct play…
I’m sick of seeing Teague, Joe, Josh, Hinrich…dribble the air out of the ball…miss guys who are open..and settle for long 2 pt shots or bad 3pt shots..

Ra’mon, you’re thinking is that as long as Boston does 1 deal, they are finished dealing? I disagree.
After watching the NBA for the last decade, the first rule should be never give anything of value to 2 teams: Boston and the Lakers. But GMs in this league think they are smarter, yet they never come close to getting equal what Boston or LA ends up with.
Do I have faith in Sund? Absolutely not. Am I questioning whether Josh will be better somewhere else? No, I think he will be better as well as long as he isn’t the freelancer he is today.
I’m still for standing pat, canning what we have as a management tree, and bringing in new blood, whatever that is.
I would say in the end, don’t deal with Boston; they aren’t doing anyone any favors. Dump Marvin on them and see how much Doc can do for him.
Ra’mon, hit me up when Josh becomes the AS he thinks he is. I don’t see the same thing and Josh and Teague are the guys I would deal last on this roster.

Stretch, we probably get stuck with Garnett if we throw Marvin at them….and I would be okay if KG only plays 1 game, a la Rasheed.
Marvin’s numbers just need to be taken off the books by the end of this season. It’s killing any flex on this salary cap. And give Kirk away as well.

If Rick Sund “had played his cards right” the Hawks could be getting a top-tier point guard in Rajon Rondo and future HOFer Kevin Garnett right about now for the proverbial “head-case” Josh Smith, Jeff Teague and filler; hopefully, that “filler” is Marvin Williams. You ask what does “had played his cards right” mean? Well, I’m glad you asked. “Had played his cards right” means the following:
1. Should have re-signed to Joe Johnson to [NBA salary] “fair market value” instead of overpaying him. “Fair market value” for Joe Johnson in my opinion ranges from 4yrs., $68-$74mil. to 6yrs., $96-$100mil. and that could be a little too much.
2. Should not have re-signed and/or overpaid Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia.
3. By re-signing Joe Johnson at “fair market value”, the Hawks’ franchise allows itself to re-sign Jamal Crawford at “fair market value” which is about $8-$10mil. per year.
4. By properly “managing and valuing assets”, the Hawks’ franchise allows itself to pursue a quality, veteran, legitimate big [man] or center such as Marcus Camby or a currently disgruntled Lamar Odom.
5. After acquiring a quality big man, Al Horford can now move to his supposedly “natural” and most coveted position of power forward.
As a result, the Hawks’ new lineup is as follows:
1. PG – Rajon Rondo
2. SG – Joe Johnson or Jamal Crawford
3. SF – Lamar Odom or Joe Johnson
4. PF – Al Horford
5 C – Kevin Garnett
Sixth Man – Marcus Camby or Jamal Crawford/Lamar Odom
If the Hawks go over the luxury tax, so be it. The Hawks now have enough talent to at least make the Eastern Conference Finals as well as enough talent to win an NBA Championship. A deep playoff or championship run for the Hawks could possibly knock [the City of] Atlanta out of the top spot of being notoriously known as “America’s Most Miserable Sports City.”
