Atlanta Hawks: Warriors 85, Hawks 82

  • If you didn’t just click on the headline with the score, would you be able to tell which game Larry Drew was talking about when he said this about his offense: “We settled, especially in the first half. I thought we shot way too many jumpers. We cant’ be seduced into taking jump shots. We fell prey. We’ve got to be smarter and understand the flow of the game. It’s one thing if you are making jump shots but, if you are not, then you can’t settle.”
  • I’ve been covering this team for 2 1/2 seasons now and Drew (and Mike Woodson before him) could say the same thing about the vast majority of the games the Hawks play. The difference between winning and losing often is the difference between making or missing those jump shots–with the occasional twist, like tonight’s 16 of 26 shooting from the free-throw line.
  • A night after the Warriors were blown out by Indiana, they beat the Hawks not with a high-possession, high-efficiency game–which would still be bad but at least somewhat expected–but with defense, rebounding and David Lee and Monta Ellis doing what they do down the stretch.
  • The Hawks saw Dominic McGuire, replacing Stephen Curry in the backcourt, collect 15 rebounds while successfully harassing Joe Johnson (who was sore-kneed, but still). The Hawks couldn’t score or rebound against a bad defensive and rebounding team.
  • “I’m not surprised,” Drew said. “They are pretty relentless on the glass. You have to get bodies on guys. Lee is a good rebounder. [Ekpe] Udoh is a good rebounder. McGuire, that’s what he does.”
  • It’s true that Lee and McGuire are good on the glass. But Udoh is not a good rebounder and collected 8 in 31 minutes against the Hawks. Brandon Rush had eight in 29 minutes, Klay Thompson had six in 29 as Golden State got 18 rebounds in 91 minutes from its bench vs. three in 49 minutes for the Hawks.
  • Speaking of the reserves . . . Thompson worked over Willie Green, who still played 21 minutes in small lineups even though he wasn’t scoring. Tracy McGrady, who can rebound and create shots for others (even if he’s still struggling to finish or get calls), didn’t play after a six-minute stint in the first quarter.
  • Remember when the Hawks blew all those layups against the Lakers? The Warriors are not the Lakers but they recorded nine blocked shots and the Hawks couldn’t finish against them, either. “I thought we just missed a lot of point blank shots with nobody us,” Johnson said. “It happens. It’s tough but I’m sure we will bounce back and get the next one. This is definitely a tough loss for us because we definitely felt like we should have got the win.”
  • Monta Ellis sure likes to shoot a lot of Js. But he supplemented that with lots of post-ups against Jeff Teague, who struggled to hold his ground and challenge once Ellis fired away. Teague had a solid offensive game that could have been better if his teammates made more of the good looks he created.
  • McGuire is the latest rangy wing to make it tough on Joe to score. After a 1 for 8 start, Joe made 5 of his next 9 shots. He looked stiff-legged at times. “It got a little stiff, especially in the fourth quarter,” he said. “Other than that, I was pretty good. I wouldn’t say I’m 100 percent but I was decent.”
  • “A few times he looked like he was dragging it a little bit,” Drew said. I know the Hawks need to keep winning games but if eight days off doesn’t get Joe to 100 percent then perhaps they should think about sitting him, especially considering his history of poorly managing his injuries. You can’t question Joe’s toughness so he doesn’t need to prove it at the expense of never getting the knee right.
  • Drew said Green sprained his back when Lee crashed into him. He didn’t have any details on his status.
  • Josh Smith missed 15 of 20 shots while taking too many Js, was sluggish on defense, and could have had more than eight defensive rebounds with better focus. The Warriors encouraged him to face up when he looked like he wanted to post up.
  • Marvin Williams missed some open looks. He usually attacks the basket when that happens but tonight he stopped doing that after he struggled to finish when he got there. At least he had five defensive rebounds.
  • Zaza Pachulia struggled to finish, too, which is his weakness. But he played to his strengths, too, doing good work on the boards and offering some resistance when the Warriors ventured inside.
  • Kirk Hinrich has been iso-happy lately.
  • Drew and Johnson each were offered the rust excuse.
  • Drew: “It could have been [rust]. One thing is with a few days off, you don’t want guys laying around the whole break. But I’m not blaming it on that. We didn’t play the way we were capable of playing and we didn’t play with energy.”
  • Johnson: “Granted, the layoff, but, no excuse, man. They beat us to a lot of hustle plays. They got a lot of easy baskets. We shot a lot of jump shots and we weren’t making them, so it was tough.”

As bad as Woodson was,at least he actually tried to define roles for players.

The first game Jamal Crawford played for the Hawks (can’t remember which team) he was trying to force himself into the Hawks offense. He struggled mightily and after that Woodson pulled him aside and told him to play his game and be aggressive. After that, he went on to be the Hawks leading scorer off the bench, and seemed to be more comfortable whenever he was out there. Minus his putrid defense, Jamal gave us an element off the bench we seldom see nowadays.

My point is this, L.D. is absolutely abysmal when it comes to defining roles, which is why you see Josh taking so many jumpers. One thing good coaches do is they define roles to players according to their strengths and I’m sure if you ask ANYONE (except Josh) what his strengths are, you will not hear the words CONSISTENT JUMPSHOOTER. Again, whenever Woody saw Josh getting jumper-happy, he pulled him aside and let him know about it, because he knew Josh wasn’t utilizing his strengths. And if Josh could not get with the program, he was penalized with less PT. Woodson at least kept his players in check, while L.D. gives them free reign over him.

Also, Teague should look to attack the basket more when he has the opportunity (playing to his strengths). One thing I notice when Teague drives and kicks the ball out, he often kicks out to the perimeter where Josh and Joe are waiting for a jumpshot. Again, this is why I say the Hawks should run more pick-n-rolls, especially with Teague and Josh.

It will take time for Teague to develop into more of a passing PG . He was a score-first PG in college and this is virtually his rookie year, so there are going to be growing pains if you try to mold him into a pass-oriented PG in his first year at the helm. This is also where a true vet PG like a Steve Nash or Jason Kidd could help.

Lastly, I’m tired of L.D. not taking any responsibility for these loses. He can blame all the players on the team, but never want to point the finger at himself. There’s no excuse why TMac only logged 6 minutes, especially with L.D.’s man-crush VRad out. L.D. is holding this team back and the ASG is holding him and the entire team for ransom.

JJ is NOT the highest paid player in the NBA, he is the player that signed the highest contract on that particular summer.

We are treading water right now due an absence of coaching.

LD is hopeless and you cannot expect players who are basically on self management when on the floor to simply “get it” and perform collectively in an effective way.

LD is simply a different version of Woody.

Both are “natural born assistants” who have a limited knowledge of the game on how to manage a roster and the rotations and that’s it.

Many of our players have flaws, but so did most of the players in other better competitive rosters.

CHI, before Thibs was also treading water and now look at them. Regardless of who the put on the floor, the wins come.

It’s not on the players, AT ALL.

YEP! TMac plays a type of basketball which is completely different from LD’s “motion offense” so TMac does not get any burn.

There is nothing wrong with some of the offensive sets which LD introduced. Some of the rotations, backdoor cuts, cross court passing works BUT you can’t do that exclusively.

TMac can post, drive for contact and dish, play the pick n roll and LD seems to dislike that because it makes him look bad (apparently)…

Memo to Jsmoove.

Stop shooting the long ball. You are one of the best rebounders on the team. Given the amount of bricks this ATL team shoots, you are needed down low to snag a few offensive rebounds.

Your game is more suited to low post and fast break offense, efficient rebounding, blocks, and a steal here and there. Every single long jumper causes this ineffective offense to become 10 x worse. Maybe you see a low scoring game game and think, “I guess someone needs to score.” Don’t do it from outside. It is not your game.

Now, on to LD.

Larry Drew has turned into a complete joke of a coach. Coaches need to mold their players according to their more beneficial attributes. Pause… while we check J-Smooves stats this year. Someone sure does have a low 2pt field goal percentage for shots outside of 18ft.

Larry, why don’t you play Tmac a little bit more. He appears to have a bit of knowledge when it comes to running an offense. We have all seen Tmac play a pick and roll game with our bigs that have resulted in a number of shots closer to the basket. I should say this happened earlier in the year, when Tmac was actually getting minutes.

Some time has passed since then, and LD has given Willie more and more time. Willies numbers have gone stagnant after some unexpected hot shooting earlier this year. So now he is playing poorly on offense… at the same time he may as well have his feet anchored to the floor on defense. LD keeps giving him minutes.

So for now, LD likes to play his bench guys that 1. Cannot Defend, 2. Cannot Rebound. 3. Have Zero Inside Game (minus zaza). 4. Cannot Create Offense outside of a long jumper.

Hopefully those trade rumors are true and this team gets blown up. Larry Drew, hope ya don’t coach another game for the Hawks. Take care.

TMac to Dallas now that Odom is wanting out makes too much sense. Hawks should target Roddy Beaubois and Dominique Jones. Jones is the most likely given Dallas’s PG depth. Hawks were high on Jones coming out of college. 6′4″ combo guard with a 6′10″ wingspan. Was top 10 in scoring his last year in college. Top 5 at getting to the free throw line. Measurables were equal to John Wall in size and speed, just didnt have the same leaping ability. Kid needs minutes.

A night of tough defeats all the way around….I got a chance to play the Home Depot Game, during the 1st quarter last night. Lost by $2. Though, I could have given less than a d@mn about any of the items we were playing for.

Hawks were trying to coast last night. I think they thought it was a game they could halfa$$ for a half and then turn it on to get the win. They aren’t good enough to do that. Add in the terrible shot selection, and last night was a debacle. Bad loss. Golden State was a touch above a D-League team last night. Pathetic.

I was most disappointed that Teague wussed out on taking the late 3 point shot last night. Hawks down 2, Teague gets the ball, he’s wide open for a top of the key 3…..afraid to shoot. Drives in and throws up a brick off the back of the rim. I am down on him today for being scared to take that shot.

Thoughts:

1) Do you think Joe Johnson is going to have MORE of these “nagging injuries” throughout the bulk of his insane contract, or LESS, as time goes on? Remember, we have a long ways to go with this contract, and the lighter part of it (if there is such a thing) will have already come and gone by the end of this shortened season. The best part is that the injury topic never even comes to light until it’s affected Joe to the point of where he’s giving you somewhere around 14 or so points per game. Then we get to have the whole conversation about how the injury explains his decreased performance….

2) Josh Smith with another near-useless double double, negated by his horrible shooting against a team that knows very little about defense, despite the continued efforts of Mark Jackson.

3) 38 rebounds by our starting frontcourt. You’d think that this should/would evoke some praise, right? Well, just so happens we STILL lost the battle on the glass to the Warriors and negated it and any other positive stat of any kind by missing a metric ton of jumpers.

4) It’s that time of year again. Teams are movin’ and shakin’, trying to get things done to get better, or at least put themselves in position to get better. The Hawks don’t appear to be one of those teams. Go figure.

Section 303,

It’s the culture of this ballclub. They have a loser’s mentality, but enough pure talent to win more than they lose…but lose when it counts. Change the culture, and change the results. But that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon, I’m afraid. Starts at the top and the ASG or whatever they want to be called these days…flat out S U C K.

@Section 303…Those are the types of mistakes you’re gonna get from Teague or any player for that matter when you hold them back for two years. As mentioned in an earlier post. Teague is essentially in his rookie year. If had even played more last season he would have taken that jumper last night. GREAT JOB Drew!!!

man enough with blaming others for teague’s mediocre performances. maybe just maybe he’s not as good as some of you think. he’s not a scrub but he’s not a floor general either. i always point back to summer league when teague first came out he hardly dominated against guys that were fringe nba players.

as for the 3 he passed up last night, it was the right move. he didn’t settle for a jumper (which everyone else did last night) and drove it inside the lane and took a tough runner but one i’ve seen him make plenty of times throughout his short career.

as for the calls to trade josh after a bad game. it’s just silly. who do you think wants him and realistically who do you think you’ll get for him. bah!

funniest point in the game last night was in the final seconds josh had a chance to shoot a 3 and the entire crowd groaned. the light has to come on eventually. does it not?

LD has lost any effectiveness with the team. He will probably be fired and Sund will hire the cheapest option available.

Section 303

honest_abe, I agree. That was funny when the crowd let out a groan, fearing Josh was going to take the late 3. I wonder if there is another player in the league that gets that type of reaction from their home fans? I can’t think of one.

Games like last night are Josh’s downfall. He blames politics for not getting in the All Star Game. But, coaches clearly see how difficult he is to coach. I do not think Wooden or Drew ever told Josh to jack up fall away jumpers with 16 seconds still on the shot clock (a play that happened last night). Josh just does not get it. Starting to think he never will.

And, I disagree with people on here that constantly say Josh makes up for it on D. He doesn’t. I think many allow his random highlight blocks to impair their judgement. Those plays are great. They are far overshadowed by his bad shots and lazy play.

Section 303

March 1st, 2012

honest_abe, could not disagree more on Teague passing up the late 3. It was there. You could see him actually thinking about taking the shot. Instead, he drove. Ended up throwing up a contested, falling down floater. It had no chance. The 3 was a better shot. He was just afraid to take it.

In Teague’s defense, he never gets calls. He drove the lane, got knocked, makes the shot, and gets no call. Happens every night.

I may be fool-hearted for following this “rambling wreck” around I-285 (the big circle), but at least I’m not stupid. I didn’t watch this game last night because there were 50 alternate re-runs on satellite to see that were far more entertaining.

I don’t need to read a score box to know that Josh threw up enough bricks to build a Midtown highrise and the Hawks lose. Say what you will about Joe Johnson, but he only takes shots he is capable of making. Like Joe said at he break last season in the middle of Drew’s first year at the helm, “We are all jump shooters, it is what it is.”

That my cohorts is the bottom line. We do NOT have a Real Coach or a Real GM. Every solid football teams builds it roster on the lines first and foremost. Then, look at the skilled positions from there (WR,CB,RB,DB). This team has no center, just a boat load of knuckle heaDS WHO BELIEVE THEY ARE SKILLED JUMP SHOOTERS!.

I really hope the Hawks dont make the playoffs this year so we can get a decent draft pick. No good veterans want to come here.. So we need draft picks..
we always trade away our draft picks and no decent free agents want to come here… somethings got to give..
I use to say this team will be alright.. but this team is to use to losing together, so when they lose, they lose bad..
People that are hoping that Dwight Howard comes here, I doubt it.. Seriously doubt it.. nobody wants to be a hero to a losing team, they want to join another good team. Who would go from Orlando to the Hawks..
But its hard to just be a fan of another team, unless I jump on somebodies bandwagon. and who wants to be a fan of another sorry team.
Trade Joe Johnson and a first round pick for Monte Ellis.. At least bring some excitement to the roster.

stop bringing all these dull veterans who nobody cares about.. If you want new fans, you have to do something new.. ..

Cant keep doing the same old thing and expect a different outcome
that is the definition of a fool!!

We’re so dependent on jumpshots that we’ve completely lost balance in our offensive. Josh is our best post player but he still prefers to shoot jumpers opposed to going to the rim. It appears that the injuries are really starting to cause problems with the rotation and I’m not certain who’s going to be left by the end of the year. LD is clearly struggling with find line-ups that work. Not much to say in terms of solutions, because really effective trades don’t seem realistic. I think LD needs to have a serious talk with Josh about his need to stay in the paint, not because of his love of jumpers, but just to balance the floor.

Larry Drew lost the team as soon as he took over and the players knew that. Thats why they were so happy to have him as a coach cause they would get to keep playing selfish basketball.

There is no reason a team with this much talent should lose to a Golden State team on the road minus one of their star players. Just look at this team:

STARTERS

Teague – Still timid, cant finish at the rim, gives up on defense.
Joe J – 20 mil/yr averaging less than 25 pts? I thought the Star
player was supposed to bring you 30 plus a night?!
Marvin – NO COMMENT.
Josh – The most talented DUMB player in the NBA. I have constant
tried to find another player in the league like him and there
is NONE.
Zaza – Back up C with not much athletic ability. Plenty of heart and
guts but terribly clumbsy.

BENCH

Kirk – They traded away JC2 who is straight ballin and averaging 20
pts per with the Wizards for this guy?
W Green – Pretty much the only pure shooter on the team.
T-Mac – Leadership of the bench. If you are not going to play the
guy, trade him!
Ivan – Feel good story in Atlanta that gets held back by Larry Drew.
Dampier – Management sat on their hands too long and this is what they
got. And he is sitting on the bench not being used!
Vlad – Can someone tell me what he does???
Pargo – Trade KH for anything taller than 6-9 and let this guy follow
up Teague. Atleast his jumper is ok.
Stack – Why is he on the team?

Is there anyway the NBA can step in and take over this organization? I just dont know how much more of this I can take. Absolutely pathetic.

And seriously…WHAT TEAM IN THE NBA WOULD HAVE JOSH SMITH AS A CAPTAIN???! Only in Atlanta.

Larry Drew as a head coach? This guy is way in over his head with this team, but thats what you get when you shopping on the cheap like ASG.
