Atlanta Hawks: All-Star weekend: Joe Johnson says ‘no pain’ in knee

OrlandoJoe Johnson isn’t playing in the All-Star game tomorrow because of his balky left knee. That doesn’t mean he gets to skip the assorted weekend appearances and obligations that come along with being an All-Star. I caught up with Joe today before the Eastern Conference practice.

Q. They’ve got you doing all this hoopla even though you aren’t playing?

A. Aw, man.

Q. You are just trying to rest, right?

A. That’s it. Just trying to get this knee right.

Q. How is it feeling?

A. It feels great. I don’t have no pain in it right now, actually. I’ve been getting a lot of stim [electrical stimulation] and ice. Just trying to get ready for this second half.

Q. Do you think the rest will help the knee?

A. Definitely. It’s the first time all season I will get a chance to have, what, four or five days off? Can’t beat that. [Note: He actually will get at least eight days off without a game.]

Q. Do you think the schedule caught up to you?

A. Yeah, for me, it has. This tendinitis is lingering around and not getting a chance to really rest and treat it like I should, it’s been tough.

Q. What has to happen for the team to be better after the break?

A. First and foremost, if we had our All-Star center, things would be a little different. But we have got to work with what we’ve got. We’ve got to be more together. There has been a little separation, especially towards the break. I’m sure we will get that cohesiveness back and try to make this late push to position ourselves for the playoffs.

Q. It seems like defense generally hasn’t been the problem, it’s the offense.

A. That’s just getting good ball movement and getting guys good shots. At times we do it, at times we don’t. It has to be on a consistent basis if we want to compete with the best teams in the East.

Q. What is the chemistry like now? It seems like when the losing started, things started to fray.

A. The chemistry, it’s definitely tough when we start losing. You can probably read guys’ body language. It’s something we really have to work on as a team, especially myself. I know when things start to go a little sour for us we all tend to hang our heads a little bit. I am sure coming down the stretch we will all pick up our play and get back to playing how we were when Al first went out.

Q. You mentioned working with that you’ve got. Does that also mean not worrying about if there will be any moves made before the deadline?

A. We can’t even worry about that. Once you start worrying about that, it makes things even worse. We have just got to work with what we’ve got and try to make the best of what we’ve got.

Q. What have you doing this weekend?

A. I’ve just been chilling. To be honest, I haven’t done nothing. Sitting at the crib and with ice and stim all day yesterday. My days have been pretty boring.

MC,

Any update on the new and improved blog system for registration of blog handles?

We were originally told it would be up by the beginning of the season, and then January.
Obviously, if you have looked at the last few blogs, it’s needed more than ever.

It not a Josh or Joe its a head coach issue here. Even we as on lookers know how the hawks should play. They are a heck of a team when they run period. And when it come down to running a set (Half court play) they should go inside out or slash to the basket for a foul or kick it to a shooter. Also a head coach would put his 6′7 starting 2 in the post and when the double team come have someone slashing to basket off a back pick . Also as head coach you limit Josh game to the high post down which mean no long untimely jumpers but makable 15ft jumpers or a lefty jump hook from the post with possibilty of pass to an open shooter (And Josh can pass the rock)

Joe Johnson is the main problem for the Hawks. They can’t afford to bring in decent talent and he can’t carry this team (like another superstar).

Now, we can follow protocol: make the playoffs, maybe win one round, then get bounced. I look forward to the same outcome next year and again the following year. It adds consistency to my life.

Joe Johnson’s comments about the team pulling together after Horford went down speaks volumes about the lack of trust in the coach as the leader and steward of this team. He apparently feels its all or nothing on the players regardless of what LD does or does not do. If we had
Scott Skiles we would be in title contention. Popovich, D’Antoni, Rivers or Collins would provide the spark needed to get us over the 2nd round plateau. Give LD the Celtics as currently constructed and they would be lottery bound. LD with the Bulls without Rose and they would draft another superstar because they would be lotto bound too…It seems the ball hardly ever bounces our way, drafting Pau Gasol does not count because they promptly traded him for “No Deef” Shareef.
Hopefully Joe bounces back strong in the 2nd half and has a great post season run.

I understand that people don’t like Josh. But look at his career stats especially this year. The Hawks are in the playoff standing w/o Al and Joe for a few games. Question – what do you think if Josh was hurt where do you think the Hawks would be? I am speaking of both Joe and Al healthy. Could you image the Hawks he brings energy, blocks, steals and I know some untime jumpers, whining, but w/o him this team would be BORING and average at best! Please tell why he did not make the All Star team this year?

soullrenaissance, completely agree on LD. I was just glad Woody got the boot initially, but LD has proven to be more or less a clone of Woody. They both look lost on the sideline. At least Woody had Josh’s attention that last season. LD seems to have zero control over this team now.

But don’t give the Hawks any credit for the foresight of the Pau Gasol pick. That was all Memphis. The trade for Shareef was a done deal, so we just made their pick for them. We most likely would’ve ended up with Eddy Curry. Shareef may not have been on Pau’s level, but he was tiers above Curry.

Agreed, hawks21. I see Josh as the most indispensable Hawk. I’d jump ship if he were traded. And his game was made for the allstar game (minus the long jumpers). He got robbed again.

True that – heat check. David West was the Memphis GM back then I believe. That was a very shrewd move of them. Raheem was better than Curry, all day. Woody did finally reign in Josh and the results were splendid! LD is a big time pushover. LD is behind the (8)
Speaking of splendid. The Heat defense was spLINdid against Lin. Lin’s weakness was exploited and the formula to beat him was exposed IMO.

I like Josh because he is not a politician – he is real. He may not be the most eloquent of athletes but he speaks the real and that is rare in athletics world wide. It may have costed him an appearance this year but he is an All-star and the league knows it. Heat check and Hawks21, I concur with your sentiments. The fact is, he IS The Highlight Factory and the occasional errant jumper can be withstood if he ventured to the paint a majority of the time. That would boost up his shooting % obviously.

You guys saying get rid of LD…you can’t believe that is all that is wrong with the direction of this team?
You got a guy who doesn’t like playing C, even after he’s considered an all-star.
You got a guy who is supposed to be the PF on this team, but spends more time on the perimeter.
You got a guy who will never live up to expectations and is not able to help us night in, night out. In fact, 2 pts in 2 games tells you he’s not buying into this rotation thing.
Its not just LD…its the guy who is providing us this roster, and its the guys on the roster. Lots of places to find limitations in this organization.
Oh to have a winning 2nd half of the season…..

Hawks21, people like Josh, but they don’t like the decisions he makes at times.

People are afraid that if after 7 years in the league he’s still making the same mistakes or has the same mindset, he may never change his game for the better. Just like how people want JJ to show more emotion and be more of a leader ( but doesn’t ), the same can go for Josh and all of things he does to drive people crazy.

If he doesn’t change, or do less of it, he’ll never be an all-star.

This dunk contest is horrible. And letting the fans decide the final vote without anybody being eliminated is horrible ad well. The average 16 year old kid has no idea who these guys are.

Not a hard guess who will wim this competition, as long as he can make his dunks.

They need to up the ante for the dunk contest winner. Offer a bigger cash prize for the player, or let them dunk for a huge amount for charity. Either that or open up the competition to some of the internet/streetball dunkers.

KevinM, true LD is not the only problem, Sund acquires and retains players but a great coach can delegate roles better and demand more out of his players. The ‘me first’ attitude would be trumped by a team first concept that this team lost sight of this month. LD seems to hold grudges too and play favorites – what happened to Ivan’s mojo? Teague’s? A true leader should be able to coach them up and instill confidence in them that may not be able to pull out of themselves in battle. Every great army had a great general.

The best part about dunks in real games is when people get posterized. So to carry that over to the dunk contest, they should get some shot blockers to go contest people’s dunks. Those windmills and what not would be so much more impressive if they were being challenged. Get the best D-League shot blockers (I’m sure Keith Benson isn’t doing anything this weekend) and have them try to block Budinger and Evans and them.

Also, they should play Knockout on All Star Saturday.

I’ve got to agree, this was pretty horrible. The one that did stand out was Paul George’s “Lights Out” dunk.

It was the “Main Event”, but I enjoyed watching the three point contest more. I wish Lebron, Durant, Wade, Rose, Westbrook etc would just join the damn thing.

And if D-League shot blockers wouldn’t want to show up to get dunked on, I’m sure a $100,000 bonus would convince them. I think $100,000 is much more likely to convince a D-Leaguer to try to block dunk attempts and get dunked on, than $1 million is to convince LeBron to be in the dunk contest.
