Atlanta Hawks vs. Magic: Game Thread
Vivlamore back from NYC. Here is your quick game thread for tonight’s game against the Magic.
The news today is that Kirk Hinrich will start in the backcourt with Jeff Teague with Joe Johnson out.
Here is coach Larry Drew’s thoughts on the move:
“From a matchup standpoint, we like the matchups,” Drew said. “We play a little faster. Just to tweak it. See how both Jeff and Kirk play with one another. We’ve been wanting to experiment with that anyway. They’ve been out on the floor before so we will put them out there as starters and see if they can generate anything.”
The move allows Drew to use Willie Green off the bench, where he has provided a spark this season. Green started for Marvin Williams Monday in Chicago and for Johnson in New York Wednesday.
“Willie has been doing a really good job the last couple of weeks,” Drew said. “He’s done a really good job coming off the bench with his ability to score. Moving him back to the bench gives us that punch again.”

Here’s a start. And this would just be phase I:
FTPB: Just tried a crazy trade, but the trade machine won’t say nay or yay. Don’t know what that means.
I had this thought after reading about Brian Scalabrine’s opinion that D12 going to the Nets was a done deal, so I though… what if we got in on this:
So here’s the trade: Atlanta: Sends JJ, Hinrich (expiring), and Teague to Orlando.
Atlanta gets Jameer Nelson, JJ Redick from Orlando, and Anthony Morrow and Mehmet Okur’s expiring contract from NJ
Orlando sends D12 and Turkoglu to NJ. Orlando gets Brook Lopez from NJ.
New players: Orlando: Lopez, JJ, Teague, Hinrich
Atlanta: Nelson, Redick, Morrow, and Okur
NJ: D12, and Turk
If we’re blowing it up, this would give us a lot of flexibility. Nelson, Redick and Morrow each have just two years remaining (1 after this season) and Okur’s is expiring. It get’s us out from under JJs contract, and let’s us amnesty Marvin if we can’t find a big enough bag to trade for him.
NJ gets their man, Orlando gets a starting center, a 6 time All-Star SG, and a starting PG. PLUS Hinrich’s expiring contract which gives THEM some flexibility as well.

I think JJ has no trade value to good teams. But I think a bad team like Minny or Nets will take him. However, I doubt if we get good value for him. I think the only thing we will get from trading JJ is financial flexibility.

Sautee I would prefer to Amnesty Joe after next season when Josh and Zaza both sign elsewhere for no compensation to the Hawks (which is what is going to happen), rather than take back mediocre players for him. Once the Hawks Amnesty Joe, his unpaid salary will still count toward the minimum payroll the Hawks are required to maintain. Thus, the Hawks can put a team on the court with less than $40m per season in payroll and tank it hard core. This will result in high lottery picks and the best chance to rebuild quickly. Only way to make this work, however, is:

Are folks banking on a super human effort by Josh Smith to energize the HAWKS and take them to victory?….Ohhhhhhhhhh K. We’ll see if he can bring a team around him and be the ALLSTAR he truly think he is. For the record, Iso Joe and Al are a lil more important then you think. I am still waiting for him to play to his strengths, rebound, block shots and give the damn ball to the point guard or any guard instead of dribbling up the floor surveying the floor so he can make a dynamic pass. One more thing, hope he is hitting a portion of his outside shots.

I’m really curious to see how the Hawks perform tonight against Orlando. If Orlando plays to their potential, they should be be able to get the win. However, it’s clear that Orlando doesn’t have the same focus or chemistry that they had in years past. It’s easier to understand why. Regardless of whether you want to win, it’s difficult to fully commit and give it all you’ve got when you know the centerpiece of your franchise is probably going to be gone soon, and a major shakeup is likely on the way.
Having said that, Orlando has still be a pretty good team so far this season. They haven’t been great or as good as they were last season, but they are still a winning team. The Hawks are missing their best 2 players and are a bit lost on both ends right now. Still, if the right players get hot on the offensive end tonight and we at least have everyone TRYING to defend as best they can, we should be in this game, regardless. It will be interesting to see what happens. Will the Hawks just assume they can’t win and mail this one in to get an early start on the All-Star break mini-vacation, or will they play hard for the fans like they have something to prove? I guess we’ll find out soon.

This is another reason why I have really been hoping that the Hawks trade Josh. However, even when they have attempted to shop him, it doesn’t seem like they have ever been offered close to equal value in return. Most teams who want to make a major trade with the Hawks are wanting to obtain Horford more than anyone else on the team, and Horford is basically the one guy that the Hawks’ management seemingly would not trade. So, our options are a bit limited. We can what and see what Josh chooses to do in the future, or we can trade him for less value. Either way, it seems like a losing scenario to me.

You think that lineup would beat the Magic tonight? Smith is a good powerful small forward but thats still a small forward. And Smith is better than those 2 guys who beat him out.
Not his fault that he plays with a weak supporting cast. Deng’s team wins without him and Iguodala’s team is loaded as well.

In my eyes, Drew has been maybe the biggest problem with the team for the past couple seasons. Almost every issue that the team has can be traced back to him. Unhappy or unmotivated players, poor game plans, continued resurgence of bad habits due to lack of accountability, players playing to their weaknesses, poor rotations, etc. The problems run a lot deeper than his “interchangeable” offense.
I’ve been saying since mid-way though last season that I thought we needed to let Drew go as head coach. I saw no signs of him learning or improving or changing his poor coaching habits. Nor did I see him developing any good coaching habits that he lacked. People said we needed to be patient and give him time, but now even they have began to see the light and realize that we need a real head coach. I have nothing against Drew personally, and he’s probably a respectable man off of the court, but he’s just not the right guy to be running an NBA team, especially on as dysfunctional as the Hawks. I wish Drew and his family the best, but I really would prefer if he were not coaching the Hawks.

I wouldn’t say it’s the same situation. First off, there’s no real guarantee that Josh will be on another team by that time, nor is there sufficient evidence that he wants to be. With Dwight, it’s fairly clear that he wants out, and he has even made his trade requests public. Also, I wouldn’t call Josh the “centerpiece” of the team. He’s definitely a part of it, but it’s really a combination of he, Joe, and Al that make up the “core” or center of the team. I’m not saying Josh is not important to the team, I’m just saying that the entire team doesn’t revolve around him the the way the Magic revolves around Dwight. Both the offense and defense of the Magic revolve around Dwight.
That’s just my opinion on the matter. I can see where you are coming from with your argument though..

Mac-Town (#maconchevyrider)- Doesnt matter how many people live in Metro Atlanta. Most fans are bandwagon-hoppers.The alleged markets bigger than Atlanta are really not as big as people make them. Theyre just close enough that they can hop onto the area teams when they are doing well. I kinda like Jeff and Kirk together in the backcourt, they should stick with that when Joe comes back and let Joe play the 3. It allows Jeff to run and do his thing in the open court, but also lets Kirk run the half-court O which Jeff still struggles a bit with. Then we got Marvin coming off the bench with Tmac and Willie/Pargo (whoever’s playing better at the time). Marvin’s much better suited for a bench role anyway, and maybe it takes pressure off him trying to prove he’s worth a starting position.

I like Kirk at the 2 a lot better than Kirk at the 1. Yeah, he got backed down by Richardson a couple of times, but with the size disadvantage comes a quickness advantage, and this allowed him to make some plays at the 2 guard position.

Shoot/Messenger, you’re right about Jeff. He just doesn’t seem to have a grasp on running the offense and being able to create for others on a regular basis (other than in the open court where his speed is obviously such an advantage). Like someone else said here, his development was retarded by Woody the Rookie-Hater so we really should consider this his 2nd year. That’s why I like him playing with Kirk, so the responsibility for running the half-court O isn’t on his mind and he can just go out there and ball on instinct, which obviously is his forte.

According to this, the Hawks are significantly better defensively when T-Mac is on the floor, although part of that is because he mostly plays against backups. But yeah, the eye test tells me he’s been pretty good on D this year, especially closer to the basket.

The Magic offensive philosophy looks like NBA 2k. A bunch of long 3 point jumpers, with some attempts to feed Dwight mixed in.

Rod and O’Brien, the only problem with comparing Pargo and Kirk is the defensive side of the ball. Pargo is obviously the better shooter but, then again, Pargo wouldn’t be in the League if he couldn’t shoot cuz he can’t D-up, doesn’t see the court very well for assists, isn’t a great ball handler, and really can’t take dudes off the dribble. He’s your consummate bench dead-eye shooter, but can’t really play major minutes… it’s why so many teams have let him go over the years: He’s enticing for his stroke, but the other deficiencies mean nobody really wants to pay him like a major-minutes guy.
That said, I’m sure as hell glad we got him!

Wow. It’s amazing how ineffective the Magic looked in that first half. You have to give the Hawks some credit for being active on defense, but at the same time, the Magic really looked lost out there. I feel bad for Stan Van Gundy right now. The Magic couldn’t even get into their half court sets, and it seems like nearly ever shot they took was a poor shot. At this rate, the Hawks may win by 30+.

Luke Cage…Yes Pargo has bounced around, but has it ever occurred to you that some players develop later than others after actually learning the game, sometimes it takes awhile to click and sometimes they just need to find the right system.. Im just saying….Pargo seems to have alot of these nights where he is on fire, or “ballin” as you put it. Scrubs dont put up on fire nights at the rate that Pargo has this year. In fact whenever a team has given him a chance he has produced…the only time Pargo has gotten significant minutes in a season 2003-2004 with Chicago (26.5 a night), he averaged 13.5 points a game, shot .429, and hit .377 from 3. I think some players need more time, and finally a chance. Thats huge to a player’s confidence when he is not taken out after 3 minutes of playing time every quarter. Ask Jeff Teague this year…

I’ve got to tip my hat to Zaza so far in this game. He’s really doing a good job of preventing Dwight from getting the ball and also has played good individual defense on him. Aside from that, he’s been excellent on the glass, with 8 rebounds already. It’s nice to see a guy that knows his role and is working hard to fulfill it.

Big Lou, Teague is on the bench cuz he hasn’t done anything really. One assist, no steals, no FTs, 2 boards, no blocks (not that PGs get blocks, although Kirk’s got one) and the lowest +/- of any starter (tied with Marv) while Kirk has 4 boards, 3 assts, a steal, the same pts, a +9 +/-… and Pargo has 3 boards, an assist and steal, 3 treys, 15pts, and a +12 +/-. Basically Jeff hasn’t put any imprint on the game. For all the things we love to hammer LD on, Teague’s lack of production vs the other two options can’t be one of them.

Seriously, Rod, Kirk is light years better as a defender and has proven himself a much better guard than Pargo could ever be. Yes, Kirk is on the downslope, as virtually all PGs are in their 30’s, but I’ve had shoulder surgery and a spinal fusion… and the shoulder injury was much tougher to recover from in basketball terms. Pargo is a one-trick pony and always has been. Kirk gave dudes fits on D just last summer (remember how he frustrated one of the best, DWade, last year?), so let’s see where Kirk is at in April once he’s had a couple of months to get back in real NBA shape, then we can see how far he’s slid from his prime. Pargo aint gettin’ no better, but I do like him for what he is: a guy who light it up off the bench, but little more. Kirk, once fully in shape, can play multiple positions, has a great Bball IQ, and has been there and done that in this league. There’s a reason he’s paid 8 million while pargo gets a few hundred k.

You are my dude and i really enjoy reading your post but please don’t lose your blog cred by trying to defend Marvin especially after a game like tonight. Willie played 1 min more than Marvin and attempted 7 more shots then him. Heck, even Vlad took 2 shots more than Marvin. And both guys had at least +4 while Marvin finished with -1.

If the Knicks are going to become a serious contender, they are going to need Baron to get healthy and in shape. Lin is a nice story but they need Baron’s savvy play making and leadership to be elite.

Melvin, I don’t worry about my “blog credibility”. I simply want Drew to play the best 8 or 9 guys on a nightly basis. On those rebounds that Marvin grabbed, he could do like Josh Smith does and go one on three or try to make a Magic Johnson pass……but he doesn’t. He gets the rebound and gets the ball to a guard. May not be aggressive basketball, but it’s the right basketball play.
Dude simply plays his role and takes what the defense gives him. He should be more aggressive and selfish at times.
My thing is this. If the guy who is backing him up is a worse player, no way should that player be getting more minutes. People can make a case for T-Mac. They can’t make a case for Vlad.
Had Marvin committed that foul on “wannabe a Hero” Turkoglu that sent him to the line, this blog would’ve dropped a nuclear bomb on Marvin.
Marvin may be invisible, but Vlad is radioactive garbage.
