Atlanta Hawks vs. Magic: Game Thread

Vivlamore back from NYC. Here is your quick game thread for tonight’s game against the Magic.

The news today is that Kirk Hinrich will start in the backcourt with Jeff Teague with Joe Johnson out.

Here is coach Larry Drew’s thoughts on the move:

“From a matchup standpoint, we like the matchups,” Drew said. “We play a little faster. Just to tweak it. See how both Jeff and Kirk play with one another. We’ve been wanting to experiment with that anyway. They’ve been out on the floor before so we will put them out there as starters and see if they can generate anything.”

The move allows Drew to use Willie Green off the bench, where he has provided a spark this season. Green started for Marvin Williams Monday in Chicago and for Johnson in New York Wednesday.

“Willie has been doing a really good job the last couple of weeks,” Drew said. “He’s done a really good job coming off the bench with his ability to score. Moving him back to the bench gives us that punch again.”

I’m a little behind after traveling this morning so take it away folks.

Everything is around the rim for Smith, and good things are happening. Why not every game Josh?? Good job man so far.

Although Hinrich played decently to start the game, the following lineup for tonight should have been the following:

Teague
Green
McGrady
J. Smith
Pachulia

Teague has 1 assist. At this rate hell have 3 by games end. I wonder what he and Al will fetch on the market.

I like Kirk at the 2 a lot better than Kirk at the 1. Yeah, he got backed down by Richardson a couple of times, but with the size disadvantage comes a quickness advantage, and this allowed him to make some plays at the 2 guard position.

Nice first half considering our two most important starters on shelved. I’m telling you, there’s something about getting Jeff and Kirk together in the backcourt that provides a dynamic element we’ve been missing for just about ever.

Ish Smith was the real PG for that Wake Forest team, not Teague. Interesting to see those 2 do battle. The real test for LD is who he will sub in for Smith when he goes out?

Thats not how it works. We are running a lot of Iso Josh and its working. Smith wont face softies like Big Baby Davis and Anderson every night.

So we run Iso Joe and have Smith as a stretch 4.

This is what happens when smith is guarded by weak players.

Najeh, he’s always been a turnover machine. It’s just that he was shooting the ball so well, that it was covered up. But no way you can be a viable PG in this league and average 5+ turnovers a game.

Shoot/Messenger, you’re right about Jeff. He just doesn’t seem to have a grasp on running the offense and being able to create for others on a regular basis (other than in the open court where his speed is obviously such an advantage). Like someone else said here, his development was retarded by Woody the Rookie-Hater so we really should consider this his 2nd year. That’s why I like him playing with Kirk, so the responsibility for running the half-court O isn’t on his mind and he can just go out there and ball on instinct, which obviously is his forte.

Usually by the time he gets to 6 turnovers, though, he’s put up enough other numbers to make up for it, which is why he’s been carrying my fantasy team for a couple of weeks. Not tonight.

Given the paucity of playing time, Ivan draws an inordinate number of offensive fouls… and is promptly pulled out of the game. Typical LD…

Gotta say that there’s a definite emphasis on ball movement tonight, and Pargo is just killin’ dudes right now!

IceColdATLien I agree with the results but not the cause. Ive seen players who got less time that teague excel. Teague was given 10min per game and starters minutes in preseason. Teague has had plenty of time to develop. Players with less developmental time have done more.

I just dont think teague is star material. More like a Salim Stoudermire/ Spudd Webb without the court wisdom.

At the very least, Pargo should be the backup point guard. If he keeps this performance up, he could rival Teague for starting point guard duties.
