Johnson out of All-Star Game with knee injury

NEW YORK — Joe Johnson will not participate in the All-Star Game due to the tendinitis in his left knee. An MRI exam performed Tuesday in Atlanta showed no structural damage. The condition will cause Johnson to miss tonight’s game against the Knicks and Thursday’s home game against the Magic. According to the team, the six-time All-Star will be evaluated prior to the Hawks’ first game back from the five-day break, Feb. 29th vs. the Warriors.

The NBA announced that Celtics guard Rajon Rondo will replace Johnson.

“It is just tendinitis,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “From that standpoint, it’s just going to be on feel, how he feels with treatment and therapy. … For us, it’s important that he gets well to where it settles down from a pain standpoint.”

Johnson’s knee has been bothering him of late and he left Monday’s game against the Bulls in the third quarter before returning to Atlanta for the test.

Drew said the time off should help ease the condition.

“Particularly with tendinitis,” Drew said. “It’s just one of those things where you have to allow the knee to rest to where it is not getting the constant pounding.”

Willie Green will start in place of Johnson against the Knicks.

Johnson leads the Hawks in scoring at 17.6 points per game.

Good call for him to hold out of the ASG. Hopefully he’ll be ready to go after the break. Would be awesome if Josh can replace him in the All-Star game – he really deserves to be there.

I’m not a Johnson hater. I always enjoy seeing him in the All Star Game and in games I attend or watch on TV. This is a shame, but clearly it’s better for the team that his knee is in perfect shape for the 2nd half of the season.

As many others have said, I truly hope David Stern will choose to replace Johnson with Josh Smith. That would be so well deserved. Unfortunately, due to the lack of respect for the Hawks in general, my prediction for the replacement is Rajon Rondo. I very much hope I’m wrong.

FTPB,

Ra’mon,

If Joe’s performance is so drastically declined when injured, is it not better for the TEAM for him to not play?.

Yes. But coaches do it all the time across all sports (and I don’t think they should). JJ is an important part of our team, and with this crazy schedule, and with Al out, we need hjm to be fairly healthy.

How many times did we see Bobby Cox send a player out there despite the fact that they are hurting?

I know JJ is a Guard, but what are the chances that Josh will get to replace him in the AS game? I hope Josh gets to go.

O’Brien, David Stern would announce tomorrow that Lin is the replacement if the Knicks win tonight, lol. But seriously, its like in spite of a winning streak going, Pop rested his three best players on last night, although they could’ve played. Phil used to rest Shaq all the time. If your player starts off 1 out of 8, you may as well sit him down for the rest of the game.

Either way, tonight we get to see what Marvin does with more touches, and a relative easy offensive matchup (Melo doesn’t play defense most times).

303,

Anyone would tell you that Josh is the most athletic but at the same time one of the dumbest players in the NBA right now. A guy that cant shoot, but keeps telling himself he can.

Kinda like you, a guy who thinks hes a sports writer and deep down inside he’s telling himself he is. So the only thing Josh has over Anderson is athletic ability…THATS IT.

And what the heck does Alvin Harper and Pierless Price have to do with the 19-13, soon to be 19-14, 2012 version of the Atlanta Hawks???

And i dont recall Josh Smith hearing anything about him being anywhere near the All-star festivities unless he is gonna hold the ball rack for somebody. Maybe he can take Joe’s place…NOT.

Atleast Ryan is participating in the 3 pt contest. So…BOOOYAH!!!

Rondo was just suspended by the league for 2 games. How could he go into the break on suspension but still participate?

AJ, LD’s success will ultimately be decided by post season play, not by regular season. So isn’t it best to get the players as healthy as possible for the post season, not for a 5 game stretch on the road, where you were probably to only win 2 games any way? LD has a better situation than Pop, because there’s no way ASG would fire LD in season, and still have to pay him and another coach at the same time.

honest to answer the question, it is happening in minny with the pekovic kid. played 4 minutes in the first 3 weeks and now is balling at about 20/10. kid was drafted in 08 and somehow does this? right place at right ime and taking advantage of the situation. marvin, listening bro, got your summer planned to work on your game or play pick up with college kids to elevate your game?

as far as linsanity, it is going to be interesting to see what happens next as the pieces come together. three strong personalities, that have been known more for me first than team first, coming into the mix. heard an interesting look into melo. he is a loose cannon, coming out of time outs to do not what the coach says but to wing it on his own and that what he is known for throughout the league. also he is not a worker and lin is. it took three coaches in san fran to work him out. on the other hand melo is not known to work out at all, so the culture is going to come into conflict. finally, melo seems to fall into that category that ai and tmac is in, non winners with all the talent in the world lighting it up for 30 a night avg for a year, that dont like practice time at all and were never known for it. i wonder if melo will get it or end up over the hill before his time because of lack of body preparation and practice effort to make the team and himself better.

o’b on the tweet, my lineup against the bulls with marvin out would have been to slide josh to three and put ivan at pf to combat their size. josh always gets beat on by boozer by at least once a game just lining himself up butt first to plow into josh. it was flat stupid to go small by putting in green and making jj a sf who does not like rebounding or contact sports. in fact i would see if that would work more often and use marvin off the bench so he could have more of a “star” role. ahem against lesser talent. remember when it was thought out loud that marvin was a queen in cavs uni neutralizer? lol!

baller, you might be adding the knicks to your list tonight and saying eighth and out in the first round. we have a lot of games left in straight match ups with the knicks which in baseball vernacular or worth two games each with a loss or a win. they can make up a lot of ground on us if they whip up on the hawks and they know it.

Ra’mon, I think LD’s first obligation is to deliver as many home playoff games as possible. And one way to achieve that is by securing a #4 seed. In fact, it is the safest way. I’m not so sure that winning in the regular season doesn’t translate into better home attendance. Fans may want to put it all on the playoffs, but the guys who make the hiring decisions and pay the bills are probably focused on year-over-year revenue.

Like OB said, this happens all the time in every sport. Michael Turner tries to play with a hurt groin. Josh played on a bum ankle a few years ago with less than stellar results. Chipper tries to make it work with a variety of ailments. I think we want our athletes to “tough it out”, to not sit out at the first hang-nail.

you’re spot on when it comes to melo. top 5 talent for whatever reason hasn’t had it come together for him. i’m still holding out hope that it works for those 3 up in nyc. basketball is more fun when the knicks are relevant.

key tonight will be teague taking advantage of lin on 1 on 1 situations. if tyson doesn’t play then i’ll give the hawks a fighting chance. but if the big mans can go i see the hawks getting behind early. which seems to be a trend lately.

How is going from playing against Ryan Anderson to playing against a 7 footer in Lamarcus Aldridge “reverting to old habits”.

Not every team has a soft player at the PF like Ryan Anderson or David West that we can abuse.

Its a very basic concept called “matchups”.

- Smith isn’t abusing 270lb Boozer
- Smith isn’t abusing Lamarcus Aldridge.
- Smith isn’t abusing 6′10 Lavoy Allen
- Smith isn’t abusing 7′0 Spencer Hawes

Hell did you forget what happened against Glen Davis in the very same game?

Its called Matching up. Josh Smith is 6′8 people and doesn’t match up very well with size. How about we consider the matchup next time before you tell him to go rebound and score inside.

josh’s size it was it is. you can’t continually use that as some kind of crutch. barkley was all of 6′5 and he played power forward. boozer is 6′9 and has the athletiscm of a snail. how about dejuan blair? there’s a shortie for you. i realize some of these guys have more beef but size in it of itself doesn’t prevent you from dominating your opponent. it makes it harder without a doubt but josh is a tweener just like almost everyone else on the roster. it is what it is. do better with what you’ve got.

look the only difference between josh and some of these other pf’s is that they had a decent mid range to long jumper. josh unfortunately does not. he needs to recognize this and understand he doesn’t have to be the 2nd offensive option. he can dominate in his own unique way without having the offense flow through him. but of course once he was made captain and fox sports implies he is “the real lebron” heh it puts weird thoughts in one’s head.

Ra'mon

Don’t get me wrong, I think Josh is best at the PF position. But before him, I don’t know anyone his size who has dominated.

Either way, Josh shouldn’t take any jumpers with over 7 seconds on the shot clock if he haven’t already been hitting his shot that night. But if he’s hitting the shot, he can shoot it whenever.

a little mre to the article by nytimes on teague:

Teague’s younger brother, Marcus, is a freshman guard at Kentucky, part of the group of highly recruited players who have the team ranked No. 1. The brothers chat often, with Jeff talking Marcus through the perils of having his every dribble scrutinized by the team’s rabid fans.

“Every time I feel like I have pressure on me, I talk to Marcus,” Teague said, “and he reminds me what playing under pressure is really all about.”

oh my! wildcat fans are tougher than us. gearon where are you? did you read what fan pressure and performance is all about bro? their standard is excellence gearon not entertainment i guess. now where is the line we want to be elite from sund et al? it went out with the hiring of LD i think, did it not?

Can’t believe Rondo was picked. If they’re not going to give Josh a spot, fine, But, Rondo? There is no more overrated player in the NBA. A total product of having Garnett, Allen, and Pierce. Take those three away and Rondo is exposed as just being a decent PG.

Josh’s size draftexpress scouting: “Possesses ideal size for a small forward, and has improved his strength during his time in the NBA. Very fast for a player his height.”

How is Josh Smith supposed to dominate in his own unique way without “having the offense flow through him” and no jumper.

That is nonsense.
-pedestrian offensive rebounder against PFs
-no fast break opportunities at PFs (so he leads the break ala Barkley/Blake/Lebron)
-inconsistent post up ability against PFs

He is clearly better doing these things for the team as a SF.

How can we say he can dominate in his own way then malign him when he does it his own way.
“Without the offense flowing through him”?

That makes no sense.

-Abe’s response: “look the only difference between josh and some of these other pf’s is that they had a decent mid range to long jumper.”

-PGslim: “only difference”? Rodman was probably only 6′7 but stronger, had a more solid base rebounding and quicker to the ball than Josh Smith.

And he never shot the ball. He only averaged 8 points for his career.

His first championship came at the SF. The rest came playing with GOAT players. Barkley was a loser who couldn’t play defense. Boozer got dominated by Gasol in the WCSF iirc and ran away to the Eastern Conference where Josh Smith plays.

Gasol 7′1
Garnett 7′0
Duncan 7′0
Rasheed Wallace 6′11 (could hit 3s, crash boards and box out big men)
Udonis Haslem 6′9 (played with Shaq and Pat Riley sometimes put Mourning+Shaq together)

If we really wanted to promote Josh making more of an impact outside scoring we would put him in a bigger lineup and stop with the bogus arguments about him dominating guys his size then reverting to bad habits.

Only tall guy he’s dominated I guess would be channing Frye and he’s considered very soft.

I once saw a 6-1 guy play at an elite level Div III basketball;

Reggie Miller Pacers [2]
Larry Bird Celts [3]
Karl Malone [4]
Shaq LAL [5]

And yes he had the head / he was a little bit nutty / but brilliant.
He studied the game was a true professional, and knew his craft.

“I will say this. Brian Scalabrine, and as you know Mike he knows everything about the league, came over to me when the Bulls were in New York and said, ‘You know, you New York media guys keep writing about Dwight Howard but everyone in the league knows he’s going to Brooklyn.’

I said, ‘Really?’

He said, ‘Yeah absolutely, believe me that’ll be a done deal.’

And I’ve talked to some people from the Magic and that is NOT a lie. He wants to play in Brooklyn with Deron Williams. And I think the whole thing with Brooklyn and Adidas and everything else that’s involved. I think how we all had this feeling that Carmelo would be in New York, we’re all getting this feeling that Dwight will be in Brooklyn.”

If you would like to make a little money this would be the game to do it. Knicks by 7 is the line. Put whatever you have on the Knicks. The two gunners (Melo and JR Smith) might outscore us by themselves. Landry Fields is listed as 6′7 and Willie Green is 6′3. So our wonderful coach who knows we will already be outmatched on the boards, will start Wille Green at the 2 which will help make us more undersized. After we lose hw will again talk about effort and energy. LOL

Grandad, I won’t lie, I think the Hawks need more height also. But I also believe, even with this lineup, if we could substitute someone above average to play the SF position, than Josh and Al (along with Joe) could be very formidable with the right COACH. We complain about Josh not posting up enough. But one thing I’ve noticed about when Josh or Al post up is, there is only one or two players on this TEAM who know how to correctly FEED the post. As a former coach you know how important of a skill this is, that has been lost over the past years. To every great post player, I can show you a great passer who was on their team, feeding them correctly. How much of the shot clock does it seem it takes for the passer to get the ball to Josh or Al when they’re on the block? Mike Bibby was the last player on this team, who could really feed the block consistently. Al and Josh would go games at a time, without any one feeding them on the post, although they were there. When Jamal first got to the Hawks, Joe, Jamal, and Bibby stopped even looking at the post many times, when Al and Josh would have post position. And I can’t recall the last time I have seem the perimeter player feed the post, receive the kick out pass from the post, and then feed the post again for Al or Josh to score off of the REPOST.

That is why for years, I’ve thought Kidd (when he was in New Jersey) and Nash would bring out the best for this roster, because those two are the most gifted passers in the game. And each know exactly where to get the ball to the right person at the right time. Bibby never really possessed this, because going back to college, he was always a scoring pg, more than pass.

If Dwight ends up in Brooklyn, that will convince me that all the conspiracy theories that i keep hearing about the NBA must be true. Why is every star player, demanding to be traded to teams that don’t have a history of winning.I think i know the answer. To bad the Hawks are not owned by the Illuminati.

Here’s the Trade:

Stephen Jackson wants out Milwalkee and the Hawks need Marvin out of Atlanta. Jackson has a nasty attitude/swagger with a solid SF game exactly what the Hawks need. Jackson’s contract is 10 mil per yr with 1 year left. Marvin’s deal is 7.5 mil per yr with 2 years left. Marvin will never live up or down being 2nd overall pick. It would be best for both he and the Hawks to part ways.
The trade options are Jackson for Marvin, Collins, and probably Stackhouse in order for the salaries to match and keep the Hawks out of the luxury tax. The Bucks could buy out Collins and Stackhouse contracts or keep them. Both are expiring! Or Marvin and Kirk with the carrot being Kirk’s expiring 8 mil. The Hawks would have to accept additional player maybe the Luier kid and throw in one of their 2nd round picks.
This is a good deal for both teams with Marvin getting a fresh start with a chance to score. The Hawks get a team leader with a killer instinct who averages 15 – 18 points a game. Moreover, his presence would immediately help JJ’s game because it would reduce the double teams and put pressure premeter defenses because Jackson drives to the hoop and is a good FT shooter.
More than anything else, The Hawks need to make a move to A) improve the team, B) give the fans the belief that they want to win at mininium a ECF title and possibly a NBA title. The team in its present form is clearly not championship caliber.

Go Hawks

Ramon,

To your point, the sad thing is if we had someone to feed the post to Al, he doesn’t have any post moves. Joe and Josh sadly are the best post players on the team. T-Mac can pass well out of the post. Horford’s post game leaves a lot to be desired. He just has the set shot and can finish on the break, although he has looked like ZERO at times on the break throwing the ball off the glass and hitting no rim on a layup.

Joe D,

Marvin and Kirk for Jackson and Drew Gooden works on the trade machine. Gives us another big and a Marvin replacement.

Of course we KNOW what Leuer’s mom will say.

The only thing that Stephen Jackson would do with the Hawks, is try to hang out with Young Jeezy and try to further his rap career. Go to YouTube and type in %Stack 5″ or “Stack Jack”.

LOL he doesn’t even start in Milwaukee and is having an absolute horrible year. But people hate Marvin so much that they’ll take a bag of weed for him.

I think it’s ironic that it was Smith’s own teammate that got hurt, which possibly opened up an All-star spot for him. But because he basically ripped the league and the all-star selection process, he made it quite easy for the league to overlook him once again.

You’ll learn one day Josh…….hopefully.

That’s the point, he does not start, he’s a gangbanger, wants to rap, but he still would come to the Hawks and be better than Marvin easily. Who cares what guys do outside of their jobs. Jordon was a womanizer and a heavy gambler (Might have even gambled on games he palyed in). He will go down as te greatest player of all time.

LOL sautee.

A nickel bag. And the weed might not even be weed. It could be dried up poison ivy leaves with yard grass. People would still trade that for Marvin.

Hey Rod, since you’d bet the house on the Knicks, let’s make a side bet. If Marvin scores 15 points or more tonight, you’ll have to type

“I love Marvin Williams and I want to keep him forever”

After every post you make from now until the Thursday night start of March Madness ( around March 15th )

If he scores less than 15 points, I have to type

“I love Jamal Crawford and I wish the Hawks had him back”

For the same amount of time.

Marvin is a scrub. You’ll win this bet easily right. If so, take the bet.

And if he takes this bet, I want the entire board to hold the loser accountable.

The Hawks are too unpredictable for me to ever bet the house for or against them, unless they are playing the Lakers who they will never beat as long as Gasol and Bynum are playing PF and C for them.

@ Najeh

The Hawks could definitely win this game. Lin is balling, but he’s also a turnover machine. And those turnovers will prevent the game from getting out of hand if the Hawks have an average but not horrible shooting night
