Atlanta Hawks: Knicks 99, Hawks 82

Here is my updated game story from the Hawks lost to the Knicks Wednesday.

NEW YORK — How would the Hawks respond without Joe Johnson?

They stayed with the Knicks for 7 minutes, 16 seconds — and then they melted. The Knicks used a 16-0 run to end the first quarter and went on to a 99-82 victory over the Hawks on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Forget Lin-sanity. The Hawks are caught up in adversity.

With Johnson back in Atlanta nursing tendinitis in his left knee, he became the second All-Star the Hawks have been without this season. Al Horford is out with a torn pectoral muscle. While Johnson should not be out for an extended period of time, his loss compounded what has been a troublesome stint.

The Hawks (19-14) lost their third consecutive game on a just-completed 1-4 road trip. It was their eighth loss in the past 11 games. In those 11 games the Hawks have trailed by 30 points three times — including Wednesday — and by 20 points four other times.

“I want to see us respond to the fact that we have two All-Stars who won’t be here,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said before the game. “… I just personally feel that this is a true test to see what our team is made of, where we are at this point.”

After the Hawks took a 16-14 lead with 4:44 left in the first quarter, the Knicks went on the decisive run. They led 30-16 following the opening quarter. The Hawks turned the ball over eight times while making only seven field goals (7-for-20, 35 percent). With less than a minute to go in the first half, the Hawks trailed by 27 points. The Knicks’ lead was 30 points by early in the third quarter.

“We didn’t respond,” Drew said. “Particularly when they made a little push and pressured us a little bit we didn’t respond the way we should have. A game like tonight is one of those games you are going to have to bounce back from because we will have another game without Joe [Thursday] night. We have to play a little bit better each quarter, each guy has to give a little bit more.”

The Hawks went on a 19-2 run in the third quarter to close the gap to 13 points, 69-56. Jerry Stackhouse and Jeff Teague each made two 3-pointers in the run. But that has been the problem as of late. Such big runs don’t put the opposition away, they only make a blowout a little less ugly.

It was as close as the Hawks would get. The Knicks answered with a 17-2 run to take back control.

“We just got outplayed from the start,” Tracy McGrady said. “We just didn’t match their intensity. I think the first half we dug ourselves a deep hole. The second half we came out with a lot more intensity, a lot more energy but by that time it was too late.

Jeremy Lin, who has led the Knicks to wins in nine of their past 11 games and has become a city-wide sensation, scored a team-high 17 points with nine assists. He watched most of the fourth quarter from the bench. In the past 11 games (10 starts), Lin has averaged 23.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 2.8 steals and 5.5 turnovers.

“It’s tough to guard him,” Teague said. “They play a thousand pick and rolls. It’s always going to be tough coming off a pick and roll.”

The Knicks, who got points from nine players, also got double-figures scoring from Steve Novak (17), Landry Fields (16), Carmelo Anthony (15), and J.R. Smith (12).

Teague led the Hawks with a game-high 18 points. Willie Green scored 15 points and Josh Smith added 13 points.

“We were a little careless in the first half with the ball,” Smith said. “We had opportunities in the fast break and the half court to score the basketball but we turned the ball over too many times. It seemed like every time we did that, they capitalized on it.”

The Hawks host the Magic on Thursday night before beginning the All-Star break. It will be another game without Johnson.

“It’s definitely tough,” Smith said of missing the six-time All-Star and the team’s leading scorer. “You are taking away 18 points a game. The defense concentrates so hard on trying to stop him that it opens a lot of stuff with everybody else. We definitely missed him tonight.”

“And people will hate this, but the truth is the truth. Look at the game flow of last night’s game. When did the game start to get out of hand? As soon as Marvin and Teague went to the bench, and Drew tried.to play the 2nd unit as a group. It went downhill RAPIDLY. ” -Northcyde-

You can’t really be this dumb. When teague went out the game might have gotten out of hand. Marvin had absolutely, positively nothing to do with it.

O’Brien, I hope you’re right. And, normally, I would agree. I think, however, that the team has shut itself down until after the All Star Break. Kind of like they did the final 5 games of last season.

Hawks are endanger of really slipping. Knicks are on their heels. Hawks could end up in the 7th or 8th spot, which is the worst position to be in. Missing the playoffs all together is not out of the question, if the Bucks ever start playing like I think they can.

If folk in Atlanta think our sports team are perrinial losers, they should move to Cleveland. Losing (IMO) is a sub .500 record. There is a difference between losing and not winning championships. Sorry, but watching a few months of a basketball team that wins 45-55 games is completely different than watching a team that produces 13-37 wins. I don;t care about what happnes in the 3-4 weeks of the playoffs… losing is what happened during the early Woody years. Or before Blank took over the Falcons. Or before 1991 withthe Braves. THAT’S LOSING!

Ra’mon,

Also, this season, as bad as KG and the Celtics have been, Garnett has scored at least 10 points in 26 of the 29 (90%) games in which he played. Josh has scored 10 points or more in 24 of 33 games (73%).

I agree that Marvin has not lived up to the draft or contract hype. However, except for T-Mac, JJ (who didnt play last night), and maybe Josh, isn’t Marvin the next best SF on the team?

AJ, I’m gonna disagree on the level of losing you are accepting.

When we were a 37-47 team and gave the Celtics a run for the money on the playoffs, there was general optimism despite the record. The future was bright. Move forward to last year and we finally show up in the 2nd round. In between was plenty of so-so basketball wins, and none that people here will regard as momentum makers.
Our showing in the playoffs is as bad as the Braves letting every NL team beat you on your field.

If its not about winning the championship or even being a contender, it’s losing. What we have here is the same result as a 13-37 team…..we don’t have any division banners…we don’t have anything to show for the 50 win seasons….there is nothing to boast about.

We are stagnant, and it falls on management to make changes. Problem is, they are going to waste this season and justify brining back the same starters waiting for them to get healthy. And we are supposed to be satisfied?

I saw the game last night and I was dissapointed. I didn’t like the passing; lazy careless passes, careless dribbling into a crowd of 3 knicks in the paint (Teague), and lazy defense (not diving for loose balls), and an assortment of turnovers. When I see that kind of body language, that to me, means the team has given up on themselves. Forget the coach; the players have already given up on LD. Just watch the first 5 minutes of tonights game, if you can; most of us will be watching the Heat vs Knicks (Linsanity). Phillips will be more than half empty, or barely half full (for all you positive folks out there). The Hawks are a joke. It’s just a reflection on the management. The management folds its hands and don’t make moves when they should-or makes the wrong (stupid) moves when they shouldn’t-a total dissconnect. I’ll flip my remote to see the Hawks vs Orlando every now and then, but my focus will be on the Knicks-who will have playoff implications with the seeding at the end of the season.

It is over. The team will most like continue to get better. This is the peak or was the peak.

Get ready for years of declining numbers which means less fans which means less money for players.

Hope that all of the freshman in college are good because we will have to draft them in three years with a crap load of picks from all the losses.

Clyde, it will take a total fan revolt for the management group here to understand how bad things are going. I always remember Sund saying he never overreacts on a win or loss. That to me is the problem with this organization. It doesn’t hurt enough to lose and its okay to just compete some nights.
The ASG is only concerned with bringing in a new fan base, a base that doesn’t know their history. They don’t want to be questioned or have to answer to the fan base.
The media in this city that is our voice on the radio is just as bad. They don’t even cover the Hawks. The worse ‘home of the Hawks’ radio base I have ever listened to. No one holds this ownership group accountable or holds Sund or LD accountable.
We aren’t even on the radar in this city, and we will respond with what? Offering Lin jerseys in the Philips stores?

There will be no mention of this organization during All-Star weekend because we aren’t going to be part of anything. Amazing for a team that is supposed to be a winning organization and our 2nd round playoff streak leads the league…..

And those of you looking at the stats of Josh Smith, 2010 vs. 2011, he is putting up numbers no better than last year. So does that make him an all-star taking up the slack for Al being out? You wouldn’t know Al was even gone looking at Josh’s stats. He looks like he has peaked as a player and I would put him on the market asap. Let another coach have a shot with him, because this coach isn’t improving him.

Kevin, all I am saying is it is all relative and this is not losing, this is not winning championships. If given the option of being a hopeful fan of a 35 game winner or being the frustrated fan of a 48-game winner… sorry, I personally find watching months of winning basketball far more entertaining than not.

Of course I want more. But just because I want someone who looks like Sofia Vergara, doesn’t mean I won’t fully appreciate Eva Longoria while I have her, because I was once with Roseann Barr and I have no intention of going back.

“Are you willing to go out on a limb and say Blank hasnt done everything in his power to field a winning team with a good quarterback, general manager and coach?”

Yes, I am willing to go out on that limb, because much like the DASG, Blank has hitched his fortunes to a guy wearing #2 who is paid like a superstar and doesn’t produce like one. Just like the Hawks likely won’t be a title contender as long as Joe’s max contract is clogging up their salary cap, the Falcons likely won’t be a title contender as long as Matt Ryan is getting paid and relied on like an elite passer when he so clearly is not.

I can honestly say, with a straight face, that if Ramonovich was given the same type of minutes Marvin gets, he would be much more productive offensively, and I think he would rebound the ball better than Marvin. I do think Marvin is a better defender than Radmo. but his defense id nothing to write home about either. You, as well as a few others on this blog know that i have been saying this for almost 5 years now. All the Marvin hate on the board is kind of funny to me now, because I can remember when I was telling people how bad he was, and was actually having to defend my argument.

Also we will lose by more than 4 tonight. Easy money.

I still think the main problem (although their are really like 5 main ones) is the PG play. Until jeff teague consistently uses his speed to get into the lane and really become a consistent distributor, we will struggle offensively. Remember the start of the year where we were scoring 100 a game nightly? Teague was scoring his points, but he was also making behind the back passes and slinging it in stride to his big men and was actually getting solid assist numbers, now he is lucky to get 2 assists all game. He can still score, and his still hitting 3’s, but he has STOPPED being a true PG. If we had Steve Nash or Jeremy Lin as PG, this would be a completely different situation, because a good PG makes all those around them better players, they up all their teammates game. Thats how guys like Steve Nash can turn guys like Shawn Marion and Chris Paul can turn Tyson Chandler into elite stars. Jeff Teague with the talent around him, should be making guys like Josh, Marvin, Joe, ZaZa, T-Mac, Willie Green better and being a floor general to optimize each guys individual success on the court. Jeff Teague is just not that guy yet.

I was just riding in buckhead around lunch time, and rolled up right next to Arthur Blank in his V-12 black benz. I wanted so badly to roll down the window and ask him to please find somebody or make a move and buy this Hawks franchise. Even though the Falcons have not won squat either, I know that there is no way possible, that he would sit around and let this terribly mismanaged team continue down the same road.

Top 32 Draft Busts of the Last Decade (according to the bleacher report)

Robert Swift, No. 12, 2004, Seattle SuperSonics (Rick Sund GM)

The brass in Seattle should have seen what was coming—Swift had refused to work out for teams before the draft and maybe that little clue would later speak volumes about his abilities or lack thereof. In just 97 games, Swift averaged just 4.3 points per game and recently left the D-League’s Bakersfield team which may indicate his career, at 24, is over.

Marvin Williams, No. 2, 2005, Atlanta Hawks (Billy Knight GM)

Williams has largely been a disappointment. His average after six seasons stands at 11.7 points per game—not exactly All-Star caliber. The conventional wisdom was that Williams as a pro would develop more of an offensive game as his minutes increased. That has not happened.

DerMarr Johnson, No. 6, 2000, Atlanta Hawks (Pete Babkock-GM)

DerMarr Johnson had it all: High School All-American and Parade’s National High School Player of the Year. He attended University of Cincinnati with future NBA players stars Kenyon Martin, Kenny Satterfield and draftee Steve Logan.

Sheldon Williams, No. 5, 2006, Atlanta Hawks (Billy Knight GM)

At 6′9″, 250, the Hawks felt they had a future All-Star defensive force when they drafted Williams. He didn’t get better at the next level; if anything, he regressed. Williams averaged just 5.5 points his first season and three points in just 11 minutes per game during his second campaign in Atlanta.

Mouhamed Sene, No. 10, 2006, Seattle SuperSonics (Rick Sund GM)

The 6′11″, 230-pound forward from Thies, Senegal just turned out to be a major bust and another example of bad scouting. In four campaigns with Seattle, Oklahoma City and the New York Knicks, Mouhamed Sene averaged just 2.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and no assists. That, my basketball friends, is mediocrity at its finest.

Vladimir Radmanovic, No. 12, 2001, Seattle (Rick Sund GM) SuperSonics

He came to the U.S. with a lot of fanfare in 2001. Vladimir Radmanovic was drafted by Seattle and has managed to survive 10 years in the NBA but his statistics certainly look like someone who was totally underachieving for such a high pick.

Honorable Mentioned Bust (added)

Josh Childress, No. 6, 2004, Atlanta Hawks (Billy Knight GM)

His average after six seasons stands at 9.7 points per game—not exactly All-Star caliber.

A C Law, No. 11, 2007, Atlanta Hawks (Billy Knight GM)

His average after nine seasons in the NBA is 3.9 points per game He has been with about as many NBA teams as the many tattoos on his body. He currently plays for Olympiacos B.C.

This list makes-up 25% of the top 32 NBA decade bust. Probably throughout the entire league, the Hawks leads in the rate of bust from one organization. If there was a hall of shame for such a category, Billy Knight and Rick Sund would easily be inducted.

Also from this list, it shows repeat blunders from Sund. Not only did he draft Vladimir and witness his decline in Seattle, but he signed him again for the Hawks as a FA. Though BK drafted Marvin, it was Sund who extended Marvin a five year, $37.5 million contract after falling short of expectation. So in Marvin’s case, Sund is guiltier than BK.

To Marvin credit however, his ppg average is slightly higher in the NBA compared to his college days (11.6 vs. 11.3). So relatively speaking, he has improved since college which technically doesn’t make him a bust (lol) if the criterion is based on his college performance.

So in hindsight, it is an indictment on BK for drafting him so high. He and Sund are really “the busts” for his current contract situation.

Lol Rod. Look at the metrics of the season. Vlad has been much worse than Marvin. Vlad is even worse if you took out his production during garbage time.

And WTF you mean the game “might” have gotten out of control when Teague and Marvin left the game. It did. Knicks went on a 15 – 0 run while they were out.

“Lol Rod. Look at the metrics of the season. Vlad has been much worse than Marvin. Vlad is even worse if you took out his production during garbage time.”

I don’t need to look at any metrics. You know what i look at. Vlad can complete a layup without falling. He does not get his shot blocked by the rim or the bottom of the backboard. If he is left wide open, he is a great shooter. He has to be accounted for offensively when he is on the floor. He is a deadly 3 point shooter, so he actually does space the floor, Marvin does not. He can dribble the ball more than 2 times without passing. He does not get to play with the starters, so we will never know what kind of damage he can do, but as of today, I would much rather see that ball going from one side of the floor to Vlad standing wide open in the corner than Marvin. I actually don’t like Vlad game either, but he is better than Marvin. No way possible he ever steps on the floor for 20 something minutes, and does not score any points.

Just tried a crazy trade, but the trade machine won’t say nay or yay. Don’t know what that means.

I had this thought after reading about Brian Scalabrine’s opinion that D12 going to the Nets was a done deal, so I though… what if we got in on this:

So here’s the trade: Atlanta: Sends JJ, Hinrich (expiring), and Teague to Orlando.

Atlanta gets Jameer Nelson, JJ Redick from Orlando, and Anthony Morrow and Mehmet Okur’s expiring contract from NJ

Orlando sends D12 and Turkoglu to NJ. Orlando gets Brook Lopez from NJ.

New players: Orlando: Lopez, JJ, Teague, Hinrich

Atlanta: Nelson, Redick, Morrow, and Okur

NJ: D12, and Turk

If we’re blowing it up, this would give us a lot of flexibility. Nelson, Redick and Morrow each have just two years remaining (1 after this season) and Okur’s is expiring. It get’s us out from under JJs contract, and let’s us amnesty Marvin if we can’t find a big enough bag to trade for him. ;-)

NJ gets their man, Orlando gets a starting center, a 6 time All-Star SG, and a starting PG. PLUS Hinrich’s expiring contract which gives THEM some flexibility as well.

OK, tear it down.

the Hawks are currently down to Josh Smith and Jeff Teague for the foreseeable future or at most the next two weeks. The reality this atlanta Hawks team will not be able to compete with the upper tier teams in the league in both conferences. With this current configuration, they may (with the return of Joe Johnson) squeeze their way into the playoff and not much else. Lets face it this team is missing Al Holford. Al brings to the table High Percentage shooting, toughnest and tenacity on the defensive end of the court. At present the Hawks do not have any player on their roster to give them that ability. Years of not having a 1st round draft pick has resulted in a lack of depth and versatility the consistently good team have. The Hawks last 1st rounder, Jeff Teague, and if Mike Woodson was not replaced we might not have known of his talents. The solution to this season is for the Atl Hawk org (Rick) is to acquire a player in a trade who can bring a High percentage shot to the court before the trade deadline.
