Here is my updated game story from the Hawks lost to the Knicks Wednesday.
NEW YORK — How would the Hawks respond without Joe Johnson?
They stayed with the Knicks for 7 minutes, 16 seconds — and then they melted. The Knicks used a 16-0 run to end the first quarter and went on to a 99-82 victory over the Hawks on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
Forget Lin-sanity. The Hawks are caught up in adversity.
With Johnson back in Atlanta nursing tendinitis in his left knee, he became the second All-Star the Hawks have been without this season. Al Horford is out with a torn pectoral muscle. While Johnson should not be out for an extended period of time, his loss compounded what has been a troublesome stint.
The Hawks (19-14) lost their third consecutive game on a just-completed 1-4 road trip. It was their eighth loss in the past 11 games. In those 11 games the Hawks have trailed by 30 points three times — including Wednesday — and by 20 points four other times.
“I want to see us respond to the fact that we have two All-Stars who won’t be here,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said before the game. “… I just personally feel that this is a true test to see what our team is made of, where we are at this point.”
After the Hawks took a 16-14 lead with 4:44 left in the first quarter, the Knicks went on the decisive run. They led 30-16 following the opening quarter. The Hawks turned the ball over eight times while making only seven field goals (7-for-20, 35 percent). With less than a minute to go in the first half, the Hawks trailed by 27 points. The Knicks’ lead was 30 points by early in the third quarter.
“We didn’t respond,” Drew said. “Particularly when they made a little push and pressured us a little bit we didn’t respond the way we should have. A game like tonight is one of those games you are going to have to bounce back from because we will have another game without Joe [Thursday] night. We have to play a little bit better each quarter, each guy has to give a little bit more.”
The Hawks went on a 19-2 run in the third quarter to close the gap to 13 points, 69-56. Jerry Stackhouse and Jeff Teague each made two 3-pointers in the run. But that has been the problem as of late. Such big runs don’t put the opposition away, they only make a blowout a little less ugly.
It was as close as the Hawks would get. The Knicks answered with a 17-2 run to take back control.
“We just got outplayed from the start,” Tracy McGrady said. “We just didn’t match their intensity. I think the first half we dug ourselves a deep hole. The second half we came out with a lot more intensity, a lot more energy but by that time it was too late.
Jeremy Lin, who has led the Knicks to wins in nine of their past 11 games and has become a city-wide sensation, scored a team-high 17 points with nine assists. He watched most of the fourth quarter from the bench. In the past 11 games (10 starts), Lin has averaged 23.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 2.8 steals and 5.5 turnovers.
“It’s tough to guard him,” Teague said. “They play a thousand pick and rolls. It’s always going to be tough coming off a pick and roll.”
The Knicks, who got points from nine players, also got double-figures scoring from Steve Novak (17), Landry Fields (16), Carmelo Anthony (15), and J.R. Smith (12).
Teague led the Hawks with a game-high 18 points. Willie Green scored 15 points and Josh Smith added 13 points.
“We were a little careless in the first half with the ball,” Smith said. “We had opportunities in the fast break and the half court to score the basketball but we turned the ball over too many times. It seemed like every time we did that, they capitalized on it.”
The Hawks host the Magic on Thursday night before beginning the All-Star break. It will be another game without Johnson.
“It’s definitely tough,” Smith said of missing the six-time All-Star and the team’s leading scorer. “You are taking away 18 points a game. The defense concentrates so hard on trying to stop him that it opens a lot of stuff with everybody else. We definitely missed him tonight.”

“He’s a guy you have to pay attention to on the scouting report, but you don’t know which one shows up. ‘Good’ Josh can kill you, ‘Bad’ Josh becomes our sixth man. All-Stars don’t have that many highs and lows. His highs are unbelievable, but no all-star has his lows. That’s why you respect Kevin Love. His bad nights are 16 and 11, his great night are 36 and 17″

Some things working in the Hawks favor:
Philly has dropped 5 straight. This without losing 2 of their top 3 players like the Hawks have.
Philly has played 19 Home games to 15 road games, while the Hawks have played 14 Home games to 19 road games. So we play quite a few more Home games in the last half of the season than they do. Now if we can just win at Home…
The Hawks are only 1/2 game back of the Sixers right now.
The Celts have a losing record at 15-17. This while playing 19 Home games to 13 road games.
NYK – 19 home games, 15 road games to this point.
Orlando 18 H and 16 A
So besides Indy, Chicgao, and Miami, we have a much more favorable H/A schedule than the other teams we’re battling for the 3 or 4 seed.
We’re 4 1/2 up on Cleveland and 5 1/2 up on the Bucks who are currently at the 9 and 10 seeds.
And Cleveland has a brutal 2nd half schedule. Not only do they have to play more Away games, they have to cram more games in. They’ve played 2 games less than the Hawks, and 4 games less than the Bulls and Pistons. So they’ll probably fade I would guess.
So the Hawks are in a decent spot to make a run at the 3 or 4 seed.

When Kevin Love averages 2.5 blocks, 2.0 steals, and 4 assists on those ‘bad nights’ let me know. The coach who said that could be any of the Western Conference’s coaches with a losing record. And with all respect right now Love is the best PF in the game, so that’s a mute point.

Looking way back when Marvin first arrived, remember the guy who was in the way of Marvin getting minutes? Al Harrington.
How good would he look on this roster now? The guy is making less than Marvin is today and still outproducing him.
That is the draft pick we should have moved on from. And SteveW, you are right. Simply blowing this team up doesn’t resolve anything. You still have the same management group here making the decisions, and so far, our decision making has been less than average:
Draft picks still here under Rick Sund: 1 (and that is by accident)
Players Rick Sund has traded for on this team: 1 (still underachieving)
Its all about free agents under this regime.

From hoopinion;
The head coach
It’s not easy to coach without 40% of the team’s payroll, but it shouldn’t be easy to oversee a structureless mess, either. Outside of Smith, Johnson, and Pachulia, no one’s getting regular minutes or has a defined role. Johnson and Smith arguably don’t have roles defined toward their strengths. With the rest of the roster on one-year deals or possessing a history of mistrust and self-doubt from the franchise, it’s not surprising they’re susceptible to a not very good team that, to one-up the Hawks in a profound way, has a defined system..
We’ve heard LD talk about motivation, energy, getting jumper happy. And these are the same excuses we’ve been hearing since Woody was here. So what’s changed?
It all starts at the top. Bad ownership leads to bad management, which leads to bad decisions. ASG needs to go.

More from hoopinion;
Kirk Hinrich: Looked horrible again though Larry Drew’s reluctance to play Hinrich and Teague together is approaching Marvin/McGrady levels. If the Hawks think they’re showcasing Hinrich for a trade, they’re not improving the potential return..
I wonder if there are any Hinirch supporters still out there? When will he get his legs back? When will he start making shots? And 3 turnovers in only 15 minutes? And 0 assists in 29 minutes from your starting PG is not going to get it done (although Jeff did score 18).

Ramon,
You are missing the point. Love goes to work and he wears a hard hat. Smith goes to work and his head is hard. Thats what me and the NBA and FANS agree on, thats why he is NOT in the all star game. The dude got passed over for what 4 years in row and twice in the same season???
SteveW,
Yep, thats what im talking about. That game against Phoenix…thats how you get voted as an all-star. But Josh needs to do that more than a few games here and there. He takes himself out mentally of a lot games.
And if Ramon doesnt see that, then he’s not a basketball fan, he’s just a Josh Smith fan. Its a team sport, no matter how many highlights a person gets, he has to be able to pick his team up some nights and carry them, not just to the end of the game, but to victory.
Josh hasnt figured that out after 8 years as a professional basketball player. Do whatever you can do to make the other guys better. If Josh would move down to the blocks and get out of the way of the guys that are supposed to be shooting and make people defend him some, the offense would run much smoother.
For example, ever watched them come down court of offense? Eeveryone heads to the perimeter including Josh. Everybody wants to be a shooter while they only Zaza down low lots of times.
Like the coach said, “he is uncoachable.” Dont get me wrong, i love the guy, but when it comes to Team, he is not playing for that. He is on another agenda. But i know for sure, if they moved him for a couple of nice pieces, we all would see a better product.
I know it is NOT all his fault but sometimes in order to have a smooth running engine, you have to change some plugs.

I hate these kinds of losses when the national media is watching but it was clearly going to be a tough game. Obviously Josh takes way to many long twos and isn’t a good enough shooter to get away with it. (STRETCH calm down!) Josh wasn’t going inside against NY because of Amare and Chandler, so he had to take jumpers and he wasn’t hitting. This team is finally really showing the problems it clearly would have without Al in the middle. As many outside shots as AL takes, he actual took shots in the post, which Zaza is unable to do. Zaza needs to take and make some hooks inside for this team to even compete with good teams for an entire game. Someone has to balance the floor, but we always have 5 guys that take jump shots and that just doesn’t work for an entire game.

I’ve also noticed that a teams Strength of Schedule (SOS) based on Hollinger affects there record in most cases, that and Home and Away.
Our SOS the last 10 is .586, by far the hardest in the League over that time span. The Nuggest are second at .576, and they’re 3-7 over that span also.
So we’ve played the toughest schedule, and been on the road for most of it over the last 10.
Overall, after 33 games, who has played the toughest schedule in the East according to Hollinger among the Top 8? The Atlanta Hawks. Boston is way back in 2nd place, and they’ve played alot more of their games at Home.
Miami is 3rd in SOS among the Top 8 in the East, and the Magic are 4th.
Miami’s last 10 games have been among some pretty anemic teams however.
Orlando had played a pretty tough schedule, but they had played like 7 of 10 at home when these stats were compiled Monday (I think it is Monday when Hollinger comes out with this stuff).
The 76′ers have played the 5th easiest schedule in the League, the entire NBA. But there last 10 has been pretty tough, and their collapsing.
Over the last 10 games, the Bulls have played the 2nd easiest schedule (the Pistons with the easiest by far – laughable really, one of the lowest I’ve ever seen).
The Pacers 4th and the Knicks 5th easiest over that time span.
Overall, the Pacers have played the 3rd easiest schedule
The Bulls 2nd easiest
And the Knicks have played the easiest schedule in the NBA.
We’ll see what happens when all these teams get into the toughest parts of their schedules like the Hawks have.

Kirk stunk up the gym last night, especially in the first half. We have gone from the promise of solid PG for 48 minutes to small guards who can have good scoring nights (Teague & Pargo), play solid D (Teague & Hinrich) and do virtually nothing in regards to producing assists.
A team with poor PG play (in terms of the function of running a team’s half-court offense) and awful rebounding is doomed for failure.

Stretch, if Josh moved down to the block, he would rarely get the ball, because no one on the team knows how to feed the post. Even if the Hawks had some one like Felton or Andre Miller, I could see that. But now the Hawks only have SCORING GUARDS. Also, what game can you point to and say that Josh’s jumpers was the reason the team lost? Because despite his jumpers, all of the top offensive lineups on the team includes Josh. And Josh routinely has the highest +/- on the team, game in and out. Majority of what the coaches were saying, were from seasons past. But this season Josh has clearly been the best player on this team. The same way if Josh doesn’t shoot those jumpers against Phoenix, the Hawks lose that game.

Lack of a true system, rotations, roles, understanding match ups…
LACK OF COACHING. PERIOD
Green against Landry produced a deficit of 3 points in the first 7 minutes and in the second quarter it even worse.
Hinrich against JR Smith was again an awful match up immediately on paper (given Hinrich’s current condition) and that produced yet another major deficit.
We were – AGAIN – on play, only 2 down when LD took Teague out.
From that point onwards it was -12 and the game was lost.
Teague is 23 and has proven, repeatedly that he can withstand the beating of playing 40+ minutes.

That quote about Josh being hard to coach essentially proves him right. Coaches don’t pick All Star reserves based on who is playing the best, but rather who they would be able to coach more easily.
Kobe Bryant was hard to coach in his prime, too, but he deserved his All Star spot because he played better than the other Western Conference guards. That’s the only thing that matters. That’s the only reason the All Star game exists. It’s the All Star game, not the All Coachable game.
Josh is obviously nowhere near the player Kobe is, but the point is that he’s better than other Eastern Conference front court players who got picked ahead of him, specifically Deng and Hibbert. Who cares if he’s hard to coach? That is IRRELEVANT for the All Star game.
Politics.

STRETCH is right about one thing, Zaza definitel goes one place on fast break opportunities, to the front of the rim. Sadly, even Horford wasn’t always doing that in the recent past (when he was playing of course). This team, almost to a man, has devolved into a jump-shooting team. Even fast break opps are considered a chance to hoist a jumper. Shame.

Also funny that they compared Josh to Love. Josh isn’t as good as the best PF in the game, so he shouldn’t be an All Star. Give me a break. Maybe if they made a similar comparison of Luol Deng to LeBron James, they would figure out that he doesn’t belong there either.
And whoever that Eastern Conference coach is who thinks Josh would score 50 if he was on the block should be fired. You need ball skills to be able to score, not just athleticism.

AJ, I tell you Josh measures a lot better against Love, than LD measures against even Rick Adelman, lol. I wasn’t measuring LD against them. What I was saying, he could’ve taken a page out of their book. In the world of coaching, nothing you do is innovative now. Every play you have, every strategy you have, has already been used before. Its about putting them together to what best suit your team.
If LD can’t get Josh to do what he wants him to do, bench him. If LD can’t get Joe to do what he wants him to do, bench him. The only problem is, just as soon as you bench Josh for taking jumpers, Ivan comes in and shoots two jumpers within the first 5 minutes, lol. Or Vlad comes in, and gets out rebounded. All of LD’s shortcomings only point fingers back to ASG for hiring him.

Najeh, Love is just a naturally better shooter than Josh. Josh was drafted as a raw athlete who could dunk and jump. And he has developed into a top 20 player despite having below coaching surrounding him his entire career. Love went to UCLA and played for one of the most underrated coaches in NCAA (Howland). People say Josh is uncoachable, but they forget that Jordan got Collins fired, Wade got Stan Van Gundy fired, Kidd got Scott fired, and more. I guess those guys weren’t coachable either to their coaches. Or was it, they just realized that coach wouldn’t bring out the best in the team, similar to what Josh realized seasons ago with Woody, and now with LD.

I don’t have a problem with Teague being taken out with the 3 minutes left in the 1st (because we have comparable players on the bench), but I do have a problem with LD playing “small ball” from that point until 5 minutes left in the half. In that 10 minute period when ZaZa & Damp were on the bench, we gave up 7 offensive rebounds. That’s half the total for the whole game in a 10 minute stretch. Who on the Knicks besides Chandler wants to have ZaZa & Damp leaning on them all game? The Knicks don’t have any depth up front, and while Pachulia & Dampier aren’t world-beaters, they are physical players that love to make things uncomfortable for the other team. Instead, we sent out a front line of Ivan & Vlad, and then when that didn’t work, we tried Josh & Vlad, and then Josh & Marvin.

Although Kevin is taking 4 threes per game, at least he is shooting them at 35%, and making his FTs (83%). And despite not being on the block, he still averages 14 rpb (12 for his career).
If Josh shot 35% from 3, 83% at the line, and averaged 14 rpg, I don’t think people would give him such a hard time. But Josh’s career 3pt % is 28%, and he is shooting .265% behind the arc this year.

1995-96 Chicago Bulls
1994-95 Houston Rockets
1993-94 Houston Rockets
1992-93 Chicago Bulls
1991-92 Chicago Bulls
1990-91 Chicago Bulls
1989-90 Detroit Pistons
1988-89 Detroit Pistons
1987-88 Los Angeles Lakers (Hawks should have made it that year)
1986-87 Los Angeles Lakers
1985-86 Boston Celtics
1984-85 Los Angeles Lakers
1983-84 Boston Celtics
1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers
1981-82 Los Angeles Lakers
1980-81 Boston Celtics
1979-80 Los Angeles Lakers
As we can see there, almost all of those teams won multiple championships with the exception of Philadelphia, Miami, and Dallas being the only teams not to win it multiple times. (Let us remember Dallas was up 2-0 after taking the 1st 2 games in Miami)
So that tells you that those teams were put together by and coached by people who know what they were doing. And Atlanta has stood pat way too long with this bunch of quitters if they thought they had a shot at winning a championship. But i forgot, Sund wants to go “deep” into the playoffs!
At the rate Atlanta is going, they should win it all by 2036.

O’Brien, just because he endorse him, didn’t mean that Josh had it right either. But remember Josh was the FIRST player to learn the offense that LD said he wanted to run. When LD came in with the system, he said it wasn’t an offense that was design to run plays for specific players. But now just last week, LD says when he runs plays for Josh, Josh declines. LD is the one who’s changed so much. Why isn’t he running motion still? And when he does run motion, why does he turn to ISO offense after the motion has been working the entire game?

JT has to be one of the fastest pgs in the league. Just imagine if the lion share of our offense was pick and rolls. Teague would average at least nine assist a game with about 7 to 8 more free throws by attacking basket in space. Rondo, Tony parker, Cp3, are not faster than Teague but play in offenses that cater to thier strengths, speed of the pick. While Teague may not be on thier level yet he is really in his rookie year, 23 years old, and has not been coached.
Nash’s 3rd year in the league 7.9 pts, 5.5 assist
Rondo 2nd year in the league 10.6 pts, 5.1 assist
Tony Parker 2nd year in league 15.2 pts, 5.3 assist
Teague 3rd year with 2 horrible coaches 1st two years 12.2 pts, 4 assists
Not much desparity.

sund has his stamp on this team, without a doubt. it cant be bk’s team any longer.
one year contracts may come back to haunt if this team goes selfish trying to make mine next year. not many top fifties at their positions is my guess and a problem with the bench though it is said ti be our best depth in years. that is truly sad.
al is needed folks as are all the starters on this team as misaligned and unbalanced as it is. as it is. summer of sameness i suggested to try and find a big for josh to no avail.
