Atlanta Hawks at Knicks: Game Thread

NEW YORK — Much of the news of the day was reported earlier with the news that Joe Johnson is out of the All-Star Game because of his ailing left knee and Marvin Williams response to a report he wants out.

As the game thread, here is coach Larry Drew’s take on the adversity affecting the Hawks as the limp home from another 10-day, five-game road trip and the loss, at least temporarily, of their second all-star.

* “I want to see us respond to the fact that we have two all-stars who won’t be here. … I want to see our guys respond in a positive way and that means playing consistently from start to finish, four solid quarters.”

* “I just personally feel that this is a true test to see what our team is made of, where we are at this point. We said all along in bringing in help off the bench, veteran guys, can come in and help us in these types of situations. You lose key guys and it opens up opportunities for other guys to play. It’s a matter of us responding to the challenge.”

* “We can’t allow any adversity to step in to the fact where we fragment when the situations are what they are, given our schedule, that we have key players out. We have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep marching on.”

Also:

Drew said his team will not get caught up in the Jeremy Lin hype that is sweeping New York. In the Knicks’ last 10 games – nine with Lin as a starter – the guard has averaged 24.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 2.9 steals and 5.6 turnovers.

“The one thing that I won’t allow to happen as we prepare for New York, or any team, we don’t focus on just one guy,” Drew said. “Too much focus, too much attention on one guy and then you leave these other guys open. Our approach to the game tonight will not be to stop Jeremy Lin. It will not be that. We know what we have to do against him. We know what we have to do against the rest of their team but we will not just focus on one guy.”

As a final note, former Hawk Mike Bibby paid a pre-game visit to his old team’s locker room before the game.

The Knicks are a very beatable team, but with Joe out, the Hawks probably need good games from Teague, Josh, AND Zaza if they want to win. I could see two of the three playing well, but I’m not feeling all three of them having a good game. Knicks by 10.

Not to mention, you know LD is going to play Vlad at PF for a few minutes, and Vlad will be matched up against Amare, and the Knicks will probably go on a 10-0 run during that time which will end up being the difference in the game.

Knicks are 4th in the league in defensive rebound rate and 2nd in the league in defensive turnover rate. If the Hawks get jumper happy, it’s going to be a long night. There are not going to be a lot of second chance opportunities.

It’s “Marvin Williams Night” in The Garden.

Look for about 2 or 3 threes and about 6 fts tonight from him. 18 points easily for Marvin tonight.

Teague’s chance to stop the Linsanity train for one night. Neutralize him and we might have a shot.

Can we not get Ivan some minutes?

If Zaza can neutralize Chandler’s impact on the boards and on D, either by just boxing him out or by getting him into foul trouble, the Hawks have a chance. Lin and either Melo or Amare are going to get theirs, but the Hawks’ struggles have mostly come on offense more than defense, and Chandler is the guy who makes the Knicks’ defense go.

Jeff needs to be able to contain Lin so that we don’t have to trap. In order to stop the pick and roll Zaza MUST stay on his man, and therefore Teague (or Pargo) has to be able to keep up with Lin all the way to the hoop. Look for big minutes from both Pargo and T-mac off the bench. With Joe out, we might even see some better ball movement, and therefore open shots. GO HAWKS

And LOL @ coach Drew. This game is just as big of an indicator of your coaching ability, as it is about the mindset and effort of your players. With 2 All-star players out, what will your ROTATIONS look like?

Most people already agree that starting Willie is a mistake. So how will you handle the minutes?

Another Marathon game for Josh?
Another quick hook for Teague and Marvin?
More minutes for Vlad and Kirk?
Refusing to use T-Mac and his versatility to the fullest?

Nah coach. This game is about YOU too.

I don’t understand the calling for T-Mac to start. He was brought here to play about 15 a night. If the Hawks pace him right, he could be a major factor in the playoffs (assuming the Hawks make it to postseason). I just do not want T-Mac getting worn down. Plus, Willie Green has proven to be a good player.

Josh Smith has center stage tonight. Will be interesting to see how he responds. MSG is my most favorite arena. Wish I was at the game tonight.

Fired up for this one. Afraid I will be let down, though.

The smart thing would be for LD to bring in Kirk at the 2 when the Knicks bring in JR Smith, so that the Hawks have someone who will at least try to check him. But no, he will probably sub out Teague at the 6 minute mark and bring in Kirk no matter how Teague is playing.

Teague needs to make Lin work on D and put pressure on Chandler not to foul him. Keep driving to the basket.

Najeh, I’m not sure why you think Kirk is such an albatross for the Hawks. Sure he started slow, but you try coming back from a shoulder injury and see how crisp you are as an NBA PG. I would argue that Kirk has a much influence in the half-court sets than Teague has ever been. Sure JT is better on the break cuz he has more speed than 99% of NBA players, but his ability to control the half-court O is far superior to Teague, who basically defers to JJ and Smoove… which we all know results in some seriously questionable shot selections. Kirk makes far better decisions and doesn’t just punk out everytime Smoove demands the ball.

I dunno, maybe you’ll quote another obscure politcal science study to back up your point like you did with your argument last night about Smoove’s turnover rate, or maybe you’ll cherry pick 3 or 4 games out of 30 to attempt to prove your point that Teague is the second coming of Magic Johnson… but to say that Teague is the engine that makes the Hawk’s half-court game hum is suspect at best.

I’m not a Kirk fan by any stretch, especially with the crappy showing thus far in this game, but I’m still looking for any proof that Teague is more than an athletic guy who doesn’t have the respect of the other starters on the team. Sure JJ and Smoove like him, but that’s cuz Jeff defers to them and lets them do what they want… just like Larry Drew does. Until the Hawks have a PG who can control JJ and Smoove, then our half-court game will never be what it should be, and Teague sure as hell isn’t respected by those two selfish players.

” I’m not sure why you think Kirk is such an albatross for the Hawks. Sure he started slow, but you try coming back from a shoulder injury and see how crisp you are as an NBA PG.”

Well, I probably would get burnt to a crisp as an NBA PG even at full strength. Of course it would take a while for Kirk to get back to full strength. I completely agree with that. So why the F-CK was he handed 20 minutes a game from day one instead of having to play his way back, when the second unit was functioning just fine with Pargo?

“Kirk makes far better decisions and doesn’t just punk out everytime Smoove demands the ball.”

Did you watch the last five minutes? Those looked like great decisions to you?

I want to watch this game so I don’t have time to link to 82games.com again, but you can go there and see for yourself that Kirk has been one of the worst players on the Hawks this year. Kirk’s turnover rate is twice that of Teague. Never said Teague is the second coming of Magic, but Kirk this year has looked an awful lot like the second coming of Royal Ivey.

That said, he still has short term value to the Hawks if they play him at the 2. At point guard though? No thanks.

Najeh, it’s not just the “last five minutes” that anyone should make a decision. Look at the larger picture, say the entire month of February. Kirk, while still rounding into shape, has played with bench guys while Jeff plays with our best players and averages 8 minutes a game more:
Kirk has same number of rebounds (both Off and Def), just 0.7 fewer assists, 0.10 more steals, 0.1 more turnovers. The shooting is worse, but that’s expected of a guy coming off shoulder surgery. So, I’m confused as to why Kirk gets lit up so bad but Teague is looked at as the savior.

Y’all just aren’t looking at things objectively. And you can’t measure the intangible aspect of Kirk having so much more respect from the vets on the team than Teague. Also interesting how we start so slowly in both halves of these games while doing much better in 2nd and 3rd quarters. Facts are facts, y’all

” I’m confused as to why Kirk gets lit up so bad but Teague is looked at as the savior.”

I’m “lighting up” LD’s overuse of him more than anything. At most, Kirk should have gotten the minutes Pargo was previously playing, nothing more, until he proved that he was back in shape. Instead, he cut into Teague’s minutes (and you can say what you want, but Teague was playing fine before Kirk’s return), cut into T-Mac’s minutes to the point where he complained to MC about it, and screwed up the entire bench rotation.

The dude has the second worst plus minus and the second worst PER on the team. I really don’t see what you are defending.

I don’t know If its a lack of ” practice ” time or what…but its embarrasing that some of the Hawks players don’t know where to go on offense or what sets are being called…I’m tired of seeing guys like Tracy having to point to guys who are STARTERS (Marvin, Teague) on where they should be on the floor or point out that their spacing is bad.

Guys are bumping into each other…arguing on defense…NO COMMUNICATION

Guards can’t bring the ball down the court without turning the ball over…Guys are taking bad jump shots…

LD is not providing any direction, discipline, nothing whatsoever..

I would love to be a fly on the wall during one of their practice sessions…Players probably be tweeting and texting on their Iphones…

Teague PER 16.1
Kirk PER 7.2
Pargo PER 12.2

PER is far from perfect, and only takes into account counting stats. So it could be possible that Kirk isn’t putting up counting stats, but is making an intangible impact (maybe he plays good on ball defense, maybe the offense flows better with him, or something). That’s what plus/minus usually tells you, and yet Kirk is near the bottom in that too.

The problem isn’t that he’s not as good as Teague. For you to argue that he is better than Teague at anything is quite frankly laughable and the stats bear that out. The real problem is that he isn’t even as good as Pargo was when he had the backup PG job all to himself, and yet LD gives him minutes like he is.

IceColdATLien

February 22nd, 2012
8:37 pm

Monger, I made the same +/- comparison during the last game where Teague had a -12 and Kirk had a +6, but it was pointed out that Kirk played against subs. Tonight it’s the flipside, and now people want to reference it as rock-solid proof of Teague’s dominance.

At the end, it just seems like Kirk is better suited to play with our starters because he’s also a vet who won’t kowtow to knuckleheads like Smoove and Marvin, but would rather run the show the way a PG should. Jeff still looks lost half the time and defers to Smoove and JJ (eventhough he ain’t playing tonight) and we ALL know what happens to our offense when JJ or Smoove takes over. Maybe starting Kirk, bringing Jeff off the bench, but still giving Jeff a majority of the minutes because he is physicall more gifted then Kirk, would be a better way of getting the chemistry right and hopefully not start these games against good opponents so damn poorly.

Pure Gearon Garbage:

When we bought the team, we were the first NBA team to say we are going to scrap it and build through the draft. We are going to be patient about it and we are going to try to build assets and then trade selectively when we felt like the right piece was there. Ironically, when you look around the league, that’s the Oklahoma City model. That was the Portland model. That was the L.A. Clippers’ model until they did the Chris Paul deal. A lot of teams adopted that thinking that’s the right strategy. Around the league our peers look at us and say, ‘You guys have done a hell of a job running that franchise because you are in a market that’s not a large revenue market, you’ve been competitive, you’ve kept your base players, you’ve been willing to pay Josh Smith 50-something million, Al Horford his $60 million, Joe Johnson his $100 million, Marvin his $40 million and so forth.

See fans like Hawksfancents95…are everything WRONG with Atlanta sports. Mr. Sunny-side up doesnt even realize how bad the Hawks are playing the sport of basketball, and how bad they are embarrassing themselves and the city. Its not only that they have been blown out 6 times in the past 2 weeks (which this guy must have seemed to forgotten), its not just that they cant play offense or defense to save their lives, its not that they turnover the ball 30 times a game, its not just that they have the worst coach in the league with the worst playcalling. Any terribly bad team can accomplish these feats, although it takes a special type of horrible to be blown out as much as these Hawks are on a routine basis. Its all that horrible play combined with the heartless, gutless, no hustle, no teamwork, and a no-show coach that really makes this the worst organization in the NBA…One capable of screwing up almost every draft pick, every coaching decision, every player personnel decision and then act like they arent that bad off. And you want to not only support this garbage with your hard-earned money, but also brush off this game as an isolated incident?? You have to realize their are people like me who laugh at people like yourself on a daily basis, and you are partly responsible for the phrase “a sucker is born every day”….You “suckers” are providing 99 percent of ASG’s income right now….thats real talk from a real fan…

Maybe the Hawks are smarter than us all and what they really want is to drop down in the playoff seeding and play a team like Boston..Knicks..or Magic again….NOT!

I challenge someone to name a team that won big in the postseason with a lame duck coach…..Its obvious that the Hawks didn’t really beat the Magic last yr…The Magic lost that game because they played like crap and couldn’t hit any 3’s…

I rather beat a team when they bring their A game..then beat a team because they hit a dry spell…

Rusty, it’s just sad that you’re too ignorant to say anything worthwhile than “shut up.” Try to make a point… other than the extent of your own stupidity. We can argue actual points, but people like you took six years to get out of high school, so I expect nothing less.

I agree with Najeh on many things, but his strange hatred of Kirk and fealty to a guy like Teague is something that doesn’t make a lot of sense to either the “eye test” or the statistics test. Fact is that neither is really starting PG material, so the question is who would be a better fit with the starting unit vs the bench.

With the immature and leaderless Hawks, it’s better for a veteran “been-there-done-that” guy than someone still trying to define himself as a legit starting PG in the League.

Either way, ain’t no need for you to demonstrate your ignorance by cursing rather than using a logical argument.

The game was over once LD went with the bench. They absolutely stunk it up and instead of pulling them once the Knicks got going, he just left them in there. I have absolutely no idea how anyone can defend Kirk at this point. He looks terrible out there. Nobody is saying Teague is the savior but he is clearly playing better than Kirk. And please stop the B.S. about Kirk not allowing guys like Josh to do as he pleases. Even when Kirk is in the game Josh still handles the ball and takes whatever shot he wants. Kirk doesn’t demand any more respect from these guys than Teague. If you dont like Teague just say you dont and stfu. All these excuses you’re using just dont fly.

Willie Green is just too small to defend Fields. T-Mac should start the 3rd quarter but that would mean our coach would have to make an adjustment and he doesn’t seem to know what an adjustment is. Fire LD and hire a real coach.

The Chicago game was lost because of rebounding. The Hawks did other things pretty well in that game. This game is just a flat out ass kicking. The Hawks are shooting 36%, have 7 assists to 12 turnovers, haven’t hit a 3, and have shot 10 fewer free throws than the Knicks.

Walt Frazier

February 22nd, 2012
9:04 pm

This was the game that I was most looking forward to-not because of the sorry Hawks, but to see for myself-the Linsanity that everyone’s getting to see at MSG. One would think that the Hawks would want to play their best because of the big stage at the Garden, but after tuning in right before the half-I guess I was wrong. LD days are numbered and he knows it. Sund days are numbered and he knows it, as well. This Hawks team is a bubble waiting to burst. We heard some of it with T-Mac, then with Marvin. We’ll see it with Josh really soon. You can’t contain the emotions with a team the has no respect in the NBA. Every 500 team and above will win against the Hawks. You can look at the remainder of their schedule and predict where they’ll end up. I’m watching because I want to just happen to see the Knicks. They are my underdog team now. Was I on the Hawks bandwagon? Maybe at the very beginning of the season-when Hinrich was out; at that time the Hawks were playing like they were on a mission. LD messed up the chemistry when Hinrich returned. LD didn’t consider what inserting Hinrich when Hinrich wanted get back in the game-would to Jeff Teague-and frankly, IMO-did not care what Teague was thinking. LD is a pseudo-coach who should’ve been coaching in the D-League or college. He’s not ready for the big time in the NBA. Anyone can sit their “tush” down on the bench under a legitimate coach for 7 or some odd years. That doesn’t mean they’ll be a good coach. LD is not a good coach. Sund is not a good GM. ASG failed to sell this team and it’s hurting the fan base. When the Hawks play in front of their home crowd, what must they be thinking; especially when they look at a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden. They know their fan base sucks-and they don’t care. It’s a job, a gig, something to do and get paid. That’s the attitude that I see in their play. So as the Hawks continue to get blown out, I won’t turn the channel like I normally do-because, now I get my chance to experience what a good team looks like with its Linsanity vs. the boring no-heart losers like the Hawks. They will shortly drop to 500 and then below 500-then for the rest of the season-struggle to get any seed. They cannot control their destiny, let alone control their playoff seeding. They would love to back in at a 6 seed-to avoid Chicago or Miami. That shouldn’t be hard for them to do.

1. Continuing to start Marvin Williams game after game (what a sly move LD, wonderful).
2. Taking Teague out every 1st quarter right when he’s getting in a groove, to put in the ice cold, no-shot Kirk Hinrich (genius, enough said.)
3. Refusing to give signifigant minutes to Tracy McGrady, your best bench player (brilliant)
4. Having no playcalls or ball movement in the half court offense (moving around is overrated anyway, right Larry?)
5. Never calling a timeout when getting drummed on 10 consecutive possesions (why waste time, lets get some early dinner?)

A healthy T-Mac in the playoffs mean nothing if the Hawks are a 7th seed, because that means a first round loss. If we finish 4th or better, we have a better chance of advancing, even if T-Mac is worn down.

Well tonight Josh is the only team captain available.

I’ve watched his effort, his decisions, his play, his body language, his attitude….everything…

And I see few differences as compared to last season, the one before, the one before…

Statistically, Josh is outplaying Joe overall this year. Maybe it’s because of Joe’s injuries which he never talks about, or other stuff. I don’t know. Some of it Joe has to own up to.

Now the Knicks take their core out and throw in the subs. The Hawks will probably end up with 30+turnovers. That’s unacceptable. There is not one leader on this Hawks team. Certainly, not even the highest paid player in the NBA, which happens to be on their team-can call themselves a leader. Hawks will be eaten alive by Chicago or Miami as an 8th seed team, if they even get in the playoffs. Tonight, the Hawks played like a Jr. High School team. At least Jr. High teams respect their coach. This team reminds me of Detriot-when the whole team dissed their coach. This may not be happening publically, but you know it’s happening privately.

He’s a undersized SG who is trying to play the position but he has no veteran PG to teach him and his coach is a cheap substitute teacher who only got his job because mgmt got tired of Mike Woodson complaining about Josh Smith.

Think about…all of the Hawks ” PG’s” are really undersized SG’s. Pargo has never averaged more than 2 assist his entire career and he can’t create offense. Hinrich is a 2 guard who decent at running an offense before all the lil injuries and the only reason the Bulls played him at the 1 is because of Ben Gordon.

By this time of the year, the game plan should be established and not look like we’re moving in quicksand.
10-30 points off turnovers…that says it all
25 turnovers is laughable for a veteran group of players.

Kevin – How is Tracy suppose to shine when the rest of the team doesn’t or can’t pass him the ball ?

LD is trying to play Tracy off the ball when he should be putting the ball more his hands and less in Pargo, Hinrich and Green’s because he see’s the court better and he makes the correct pass.

I wish Tracy was more selfish and would take as many shots as Vlad, Green, Hinrich and Pargo maybe he would catch on fire and score double digits more often.

And T-Mac should look for the ball more if he wants to be more involved. I think he is satisfied with his role of being just another guy on the court. He should be ready to get the ball each time on the offensive end. I don’t like watching him take plays off over and over.
LD or not, he has to get past his passive attempts at being in this offense. He’s starting to resemble Marvin, who is being paid 7X more than he’s getting…you can’t tell me T-Mac is giving it his all.

The Hawks need an owner like ” Jerry Jones ” somebody who will travel with the team and walk in the locker room after a loss like tonight and raise holy hell !

He would tear LD a new back pocket and let him know either he makes things better or else he will appoint one of the assitants to take his job like LD took Mike D’s

He would absolutely embarrass Marvin Williams and Kirk Hinrich. for shooting a combined 1-8.

He would just give Josh Smith a hard long stare and shake his head and tell him that at some point he’s going to have grow the F up and stop acting like a spoiled child or else ship the F out.

After tomorrows win/loss the Hawks will have approximately 6 days to relax, reflect and reboot. After the Allstar break is when the season gets really SERIOUS. No more laying down and giving up after the 1st quarter just because you’re down 10-15 pts. Guys are going to have play more harder and smarter each and every game – night in/night out – If they want to really make a strong push not just to make the playoffs but to have that momentum going in that could potentially catapult a team pass the first round because Its not a lock that they will get in or make it pass whoever they face.

I don’t think LD has it in for Tracy – I think LD is just a wuss who is afraid to make a change in the lineup because of how much $$$ mgmt has invested in Joe, Josh and Marvin.

I think LD is afraid to bench Marvin because it will make mgmt look stupid considering they’re paying him $9Mil per season. It would be the last affirmation that he’s a bust and LD doesn’t want mgmt asking him why are they paying a guy $9Mil to ride the pine.

LD probably sold mgmt on the fact that he can make Marvin into a better player and to bench him would mean that he sucks as a coach and Marvin’s confidence would be destroyed along with his trade value.

I’m sure LD is a nice man but its more than obvious that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a head coach in this league and that he is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy over his head.

On to the game. It was awful. Lots of flailing around on defense and shooting 3’s with 15 seconds on the clock. Looks like they’re taking the allstar break early. That wasn’t easy to watch. And Nique didn’t help with the audio.

Your Atlanta Hawks are the true definition of no faith. They are very talented but has no one to guide them. When they do believe in themselves they are a team we are all rave about. When they lose we talk like theyre a piece of u know. Lets face it we really don’t support the Hawks like we do the Falcons and Braves so when they lose we are so quick to point fingers and say the hawks sorry. The city should strip ASG of ownership for damaging the Hawks brand for future reference because no wants to come here as long as their owners. But Atlanta will be the laughing stock of the NBA for years to come because they have to rebuild again. As the league gets even powerful the core has run its course because JJ is as a good as a six man really. Josh skipped fundamentals 101 and went straight to the big leagues. Al should stay because he’s a valuable 4 with some heart with him. Marvin Marvin Marvin God Bless Marvin. 1 2 buckle my shoe Marvin skipped the course too. Pretty much like his game. Teague mad love for the dude doesnt get the chance to get in his zone due to not being played in previous years and being yanked after he make a few mistakes. This is really his rookie year folks. Zaza is your toughest player on your team(says a lot about toughness). Then LD. Oh LD. If you only had a brain you be smart which you are not. You cant even get these guys to listen to you. They run you where are your balls.Man up! Call em out thats what coaches do. Bench them when you think they are not giving you 110. (percent). You make excuses for them. You cater to this teams wants.Hawks shouldve took Avery Johnson. At least he would have brought toughness.
This GM should have never been hired in the first place. He has a bad rep everywhere he has been and destroyed franchises for years. Then the owners our beloved broke owners who decides to sit on money and make a profit for ten years loves mediocre play. Chooses not to do what it takes bring championship(conference finals will do) caliber team to Atlanta.Take notes from the Thunder on how to rebuild starting with the fans.

Mouhamed Sene, No. 10, 2006, Seattle SuperSonics (Rick Sund GM)

The 6′11″, 230-pound forward from Thies, Senegal just turned out to be a major bust and another example of bad scouting. In four campaigns with Seattle, Oklahoma City and the New York Knicks, Mouhamed Sene averaged just 2.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and no assists. That, my basketball friends, is mediocrity at its finest.

Sheldon Williams, No. 5, 2006, Atlanta Hawks (Billy Knight GM)

At 6′9″, 250, the Hawks felt they had a future All-Star defensive force when they drafted Williams. He didn’t get better at the next level; if anything, he regressed. Williams averaged just 5.5 points his first season and three points in just 11 minutes per game during his second campaign in Atlanta.

Robert Swift, No. 12, 2004, Seattle SuperSonics (Rick Sund GM)

The brass in Seattle should have seen what was coming—Swift had refused to work out for teams before the draft and maybe that little clue would later speak volumes about his abilities or lack thereof. In just 97 games, Swift averaged just 4.3 points per game and recently left the D-League’s Bakersfield team which may indicate his career, at 24, is over.

Marvin Williams, No. 2, 2005, Atlanta Hawks (Billy Knight GM)

Williams has largely been a disappointment. His average after six seasons stands at 11.7 points per game—not exactly All-Star caliber. The conventional wisdom was that Williams as a pro would develop more of an offensive game as his minutes increased. That has not happened.

“L.D. has some philosophical principles to go along with the Xs and Os. He said he believes his system will work because the Hawks have so many “interchangeable pieces” to work with. Al will play some power forward with Zaza or Twin at center but Drew said the combinations won’t end there.

“We have the luxury a lot of interchangeable positions. We’ve got twos that can be play 3, threes that can play four, fours that can play five. We can even move Josh to the five against certain matchups. You might see the five at the three. You might even see the five at the one. [Regardless of lineup] nothing changes as far as the action on the floor. I want to utilize our abilities as interchangeable pieces.”
