Atlanta Hawks at Knicks: Game Thread

NEW YORK — Much of the news of the day was reported earlier with the news that Joe Johnson is out of the All-Star Game because of his ailing left knee and Marvin Williams response to a report he wants out.

As the game thread, here is coach Larry Drew’s take on the adversity affecting the Hawks as the limp home from another 10-day, five-game road trip and the loss, at least temporarily, of their second all-star.

* “I want to see us respond to the fact that we have two all-stars who won’t be here. … I want to see our guys respond in a positive way and that means playing consistently from start to finish, four solid quarters.”

* “I just personally feel that this is a true test to see what our team is made of, where we are at this point. We said all along in bringing in help off the bench, veteran guys, can come in and help us in these types of situations. You lose key guys and it opens up opportunities for other guys to play. It’s a matter of us responding to the challenge.”

* “We can’t allow any adversity to step in to the fact where we fragment when the situations are what they are, given our schedule, that we have key players out. We have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep marching on.”

Also:

Drew said his team will not get caught up in the Jeremy Lin hype that is sweeping New York. In the Knicks’ last 10 games – nine with Lin as a starter – the guard has averaged 24.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 2.9 steals and 5.6 turnovers.

“The one thing that I won’t allow to happen as we prepare for New York, or any team, we don’t focus on just one guy,” Drew said. “Too much focus, too much attention on one guy and then you leave these other guys open. Our approach to the game tonight will not be to stop Jeremy Lin. It will not be that. We know what we have to do against him. We know what we have to do against the rest of their team but we will not just focus on one guy.”

As a final note, former Hawk Mike Bibby paid a pre-game visit to his old team’s locker room before the game.

More Gearon:

But you go back and say what did Denver do with Carmelo Anthony? They made it past the first round once. What did New Orleans do with Chris Paul? Go past the first round once. What did the Hawks do with Joe Johnson? They’ve gotten past the first round three years in a row. Joe deserves some credit for that. Does he a have a big contract? Absolutely. But I think for a fanbase, they should say, ‘I’m glad those owners stepped up to pay him instead of let him go for nothing.’

See fans like Hawksfancents95…are everything WRONG with Atlanta sports. Mr. Sunny-side up doesnt even realize how bad the Hawks are playing the sport of basketball, and how bad they are embarrassing themselves and the city. Its not only that they have been blown out 6 times in the past 2 weeks (which this guy must have seemed to forgotten), its not just that they cant play offense or defense to save their lives, its not that they turnover the ball 30 times a game, its not just that they have the worst coach in the league with the worst playcalling. Any terribly bad team can accomplish these feats, although it takes a special type of horrible to be blown out as much as these Hawks are on a routine basis. Its all that horrible play combined with the heartless, gutless, no hustle, no teamwork, and a no-show coach that really makes this the worst organization in the NBA…One capable of screwing up almost every draft pick, every coaching decision, every player personnel decision and then act like they arent that bad off. And you want to not only support this garbage with your hard-earned money, but also brush off this game as an isolated incident?? You have to realize their are people like me who laugh at people like yourself on a daily basis, and you are partly responsible for the phrase “a sucker is born every day”….You “suckers” are providing 99 percent of ASG’s income right now….thats real talk from a real fan…

Worst effort of the year. LD is horrible and must go. How do you just sit there and watch Hinrich suck it up and not do anything till we’re down 15. Hate to waste good type but Marvin is playing so bad lately. Not sure I am watching these guys for a while and damn sure not buying a ticket. LD must go.

I had to burn some funny smoke to calm down after seeing the Hawks first half…I thought after the Bulls game that they couldn’t play any worse. At least the Bulls are well…The Bulls…But to be losing by 30 pts to the ” KNICKS” is wayyyyy too offensive.

Maybe the Hawks are smarter than us all and what they really want is to drop down in the playoff seeding and play a team like Boston..Knicks..or Magic again….NOT!

I challenge someone to name a team that won big in the postseason with a lame duck coach…..Its obvious that the Hawks didn’t really beat the Magic last yr…The Magic lost that game because they played like crap and couldn’t hit any 3’s…

I rather beat a team when they bring their A game..then beat a team because they hit a dry spell…

I doubt the Hawks will be as lucky again this post season…If they make the post season..

If you would like to make a little money this would be the game to do it. Knicks by 7 is the line. Put whatever you have on the Knicks. The two gunners (Melo and JR Smith) might outscore us by themselves. Landry Fields is listed as 6′7 and Willie Green is 6′3. So our wonderful coach who knows we will already be outmatched on the boards, will start Wille Green at the 2 which will help make us more undersized. After we lose hw will again talk about effort and energy. LOL”

One thing my blog friends can never say is that I have never tried to help them make some money. Lets just say, I be taking a nice long vacation off this game.

Y’all still think Melo is just a selfish ball hog who can’t play on a winning team? Still wouldn’t trade Josh for him?

Stars rule the NBA. The more you have, the better your chances of winning.

I’m as big a Josh fan as anyone here, but I’d trade him for Melo in a heartbeat.

I’ll also go on the record as saying the Knicks go farther than the Nuggets in the playoffs this year.

Rusty, it’s just sad that you’re too ignorant to say anything worthwhile than “shut up.” Try to make a point… other than the extent of your own stupidity. We can argue actual points, but people like you took six years to get out of high school, so I expect nothing less.

I agree with Najeh on many things, but his strange hatred of Kirk and fealty to a guy like Teague is something that doesn’t make a lot of sense to either the “eye test” or the statistics test. Fact is that neither is really starting PG material, so the question is who would be a better fit with the starting unit vs the bench.

With the immature and leaderless Hawks, it’s better for a veteran “been-there-done-that” guy than someone still trying to define himself as a legit starting PG in the League.

Either way, ain’t no need for you to demonstrate your ignorance by cursing rather than using a logical argument.

This team is such garbage right now. It goes beyond coaching now….the whole team is flat and pretty much dont care, they argue with each other, dont help out…etc, etc.

Marvin has nothing but a jump shot. If you dont run plays for him he wont be effective. Does Drew know this?

Teague is trying hard and doing reasonably well….Kirk is doing nothing.

We could lose by 60 tonight LOL!

ASG sources of revenue….

65 percent….delusional fans who believe anything and everything told to them by anyone. These people think the Hawks are among the East Elite and Joe Johnson will take them to the promised land before his jersey in hung in the rafters forever. They also believe everything said by George Bush, Bill O’Reilly, and every policeman ever. Some also hold season tickets to the Braves and Falcons….who are “championship-caliber” teams to these guys…yeah you know the type.

25 percent….People who are new to the city and looking for some exciting proffesional sports to watch. They crowd in the minivan and bring their family to Phillips for the first…….and last time. Unfortunately for ASG, these are not repeat customers.

10 percent….People held at gunpoint by ASG hired gunman and Rick Sund to improve attendance figures…whoops i dont think i should have opened up the can on that issue…

Multiple choice question:

Marvin says he would never request a trade because he knows:

1) he sucks

3) he doesn’t care enough
4) All of the above

The game was over once LD went with the bench. They absolutely stunk it up and instead of pulling them once the Knicks got going, he just left them in there. I have absolutely no idea how anyone can defend Kirk at this point. He looks terrible out there. Nobody is saying Teague is the savior but he is clearly playing better than Kirk. And please stop the B.S. about Kirk not allowing guys like Josh to do as he pleases. Even when Kirk is in the game Josh still handles the ball and takes whatever shot he wants. Kirk doesn’t demand any more respect from these guys than Teague. If you dont like Teague just say you dont and stfu. All these excuses you’re using just dont fly.

Willie Green is just too small to defend Fields. T-Mac should start the 3rd quarter but that would mean our coach would have to make an adjustment and he doesn’t seem to know what an adjustment is. Fire LD and hire a real coach.

The Chicago game was lost because of rebounding. The Hawks did other things pretty well in that game. This game is just a flat out ass kicking. The Hawks are shooting 36%, have 7 assists to 12 turnovers, haven’t hit a 3, and have shot 10 fewer free throws than the Knicks.
