Atlanta Hawks at Knicks: Game Thread

NEW YORK — Much of the news of the day was reported earlier with the news that Joe Johnson is out of the All-Star Game because of his ailing left knee and Marvin Williams response to a report he wants out.

As the game thread, here is coach Larry Drew’s take on the adversity affecting the Hawks as the limp home from another 10-day, five-game road trip and the loss, at least temporarily, of their second all-star.

* “I want to see us respond to the fact that we have two all-stars who won’t be here. … I want to see our guys respond in a positive way and that means playing consistently from start to finish, four solid quarters.”

* “I just personally feel that this is a true test to see what our team is made of, where we are at this point. We said all along in bringing in help off the bench, veteran guys, can come in and help us in these types of situations. You lose key guys and it opens up opportunities for other guys to play. It’s a matter of us responding to the challenge.”

* “We can’t allow any adversity to step in to the fact where we fragment when the situations are what they are, given our schedule, that we have key players out. We have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep marching on.”

Also:

Drew said his team will not get caught up in the Jeremy Lin hype that is sweeping New York. In the Knicks’ last 10 games – nine with Lin as a starter – the guard has averaged 24.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 2.9 steals and 5.6 turnovers.

“The one thing that I won’t allow to happen as we prepare for New York, or any team, we don’t focus on just one guy,” Drew said. “Too much focus, too much attention on one guy and then you leave these other guys open. Our approach to the game tonight will not be to stop Jeremy Lin. It will not be that. We know what we have to do against him. We know what we have to do against the rest of their team but we will not just focus on one guy.”

As a final note, former Hawk Mike Bibby paid a pre-game visit to his old team’s locker room before the game.

This team has no leadership, basketball IQ, pride, heart, toughness, good coaching or sense of urgency, but they do have a lot of quit in them. I hate this team with a passion. I hope they miss the playoffs. What a bunch of scrubs. I would trade Josh, Marvin, Kirk and Joe for picks and players with heart, basketball IQ and toughness. I’m done with this team.

This was the game that I was most looking forward to-not because of the sorry Hawks, but to see for myself-the Linsanity that everyone’s getting to see at MSG. One would think that the Hawks would want to play their best because of the big stage at the Garden, but after tuning in right before the half-I guess I was wrong. LD days are numbered and he knows it. Sund days are numbered and he knows it, as well. This Hawks team is a bubble waiting to burst. We heard some of it with T-Mac, then with Marvin. We’ll see it with Josh really soon. You can’t contain the emotions with a team the has no respect in the NBA. Every 500 team and above will win against the Hawks. You can look at the remainder of their schedule and predict where they’ll end up. I’m watching because I want to just happen to see the Knicks. They are my underdog team now. Was I on the Hawks bandwagon? Maybe at the very beginning of the season-when Hinrich was out; at that time the Hawks were playing like they were on a mission. LD messed up the chemistry when Hinrich returned. LD didn’t consider what inserting Hinrich when Hinrich wanted get back in the game-would to Jeff Teague-and frankly, IMO-did not care what Teague was thinking. LD is a pseudo-coach who should’ve been coaching in the D-League or college. He’s not ready for the big time in the NBA. Anyone can sit their “tush” down on the bench under a legitimate coach for 7 or some odd years. That doesn’t mean they’ll be a good coach. LD is not a good coach. Sund is not a good GM. ASG failed to sell this team and it’s hurting the fan base. When the Hawks play in front of their home crowd, what must they be thinking; especially when they look at a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden. They know their fan base sucks-and they don’t care. It’s a job, a gig, something to do and get paid. That’s the attitude that I see in their play. So as the Hawks continue to get blown out, I won’t turn the channel like I normally do-because, now I get my chance to experience what a good team looks like with its Linsanity vs. the boring no-heart losers like the Hawks. They will shortly drop to 500 and then below 500-then for the rest of the season-struggle to get any seed. They cannot control their destiny, let alone control their playoff seeding. They would love to back in at a 6 seed-to avoid Chicago or Miami. That shouldn’t be hard for them to do.

Reasons Larry Drew should be coach of the year…

1. Continuing to start Marvin Williams game after game (what a sly move LD, wonderful).
2. Taking Teague out every 1st quarter right when he’s getting in a groove, to put in the ice cold, no-shot Kirk Hinrich (genius, enough said.)
3. Refusing to give signifigant minutes to Tracy McGrady, your best bench player (brilliant)
4. Having no playcalls or ball movement in the half court offense (moving around is overrated anyway, right Larry?)
5. Never calling a timeout when getting drummed on 10 consecutive possesions (why waste time, lets get some early dinner?)

sarcasm off…

Seriously, y’all, what else can we expect from a team without their best two players and the lowest-paid/least respected head coach in the game who obviously hasn’t a creative bone in his body?

These fools are basically the equivalent of college kids in class the Wednesday before Spring Break with a grad assistant running the class… they’re sleep-walking through the game already thinking about the long break.

I mean, look, Stack is in the game in the third quarter… ‘nuf said

More reasons Larry Drew is a great coach…

6. Playing Jason Collins AT ALL. EVER.
7. Doing nothing but stand there while Josh Smith takes his 7th missed jumpshot of the game.
8. Showing NO emotion while your team is beaten like a drum for the 3rd straight game.

Bob -Rathburns excuse cue cards for the hawks…

1. “Josh Smith just cant get any love from the rim tonight, man is he unlucky” (after his 3rd airball)
2. “Joe just cant get a call from the ref tonight….thats alot of contact Nique” (with nobody around, after he dribbles the ball off his leg).
3. “That was a great drive by Marvin” (after he misses an easy layup and is 0-7 from the field, but hey great drive right?)
4. ‘If the Hawks had Al Horford, ya gotta believe they’d be winning this game” (down 34 points).
5. “Lets see if the Hawks can hit a 3 and cut this lead to single digits” (every 4th quarter this year).

Microcosm of the Hawks’ season:

Josh runs the break, passes to Marvin under the hoop with nowhere to go, and he dribbles it off some dude’s foot, it ends up with an old guy who’s played a total of 8 minutes all year missing a tech FT. Classic Hawks!!!
