Vivlamore reporting from Chicago.
Tracy McGrady met with Hawks coach Larry Drew and general manager Rick Sund about the forward’s publicly expressed displeasure over a lack of playing time.
Both sides say they are ready to move on.
“We talked,” McGrady said before Monday’s game against the Bulls. “Players get frustrated. I was frustrated. We talked and ironed things out. Now, we move on.”
Drew would not disclose the details of the meeting but said “we addressed the problem.”
After playing just 4:39 during a 97-77 loss to the Blazers Saturday, McGrady told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I’m tired of this [bleep]. You can put that in the paper, I don’t give a [bleep].”
Drew has been mindful of McGrady’s minutes this season. The two-time NBA scoring champion has suffered through injuries, which includes a herniated disk in his back. He suffered back spasms on Jan. 11 and sat out three games.
“I’m sure everybody wants to play,” Drew said. “I want guys who want to play. I don’t want guys content to sit on the bench. But the way it was handled, you don’t handle it that way. We will keep looking at the situation of each game. I’m always looking at matchups. I’m always looking at it if it puts us at an advantage, if it puts us at a disadvantage. My job is to coach this team and I’m going to try to put us in the best position as possible. Sometimes it will jeopardize minutes when guys want to play but that is the way it is.”
Entering Monday’s game, McGrady has played in 26 of 32 games this season with average of 18 minutes. Last season with the Pistons McGrady averaged 23 minutes in 72 games.
“If you don’t feel I can help, come tell me that,” McGrady told the AJC. “He ain’t told me nothing. I just want to help these guys win, man, which I know I can. But, damn, four minutes?”
McGrady did not get a start Monday after Marvin Williams left the team Sunday due to the death of a relative. McGrady usually is the substitute for Williams.
* Drew did not know details of the personal situation or when Williams would return to the team. The Hawks end a five-game road trip against the Knicks on Wednesday.
Willie Green got the start in place of Williams.
“Willie has really been playing well for us,” Drew said. “I think the one thing we will miss about Willie is the punch he provides off the bench. In this situation I will juggle the guys coming off the bench but I just felt from a matchup standpoint he gives us a better chance.”
* The Hawks signed center Erick Dampier to a second 10-day contract Sunday with Jason Collins out up to another month with a torn ligament in his left elbow.
The 15-year veteran has appeared in four games for the Hawks after signing his first 10-day contract on Feb. 9. He has not scored but is averaging 2.5 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.3 blocks in 6.5 minutes.
* Drew said he expects no issues with Joe Johnson’s left knee. The All-Star wore a soft brace to protect his problematic the knee Saturday, saying he is suffering from tendinitis around the patellar tendon.
“We will keep an eye on it,” Drew said.

“I think the one thing we will miss about Willie is the punch he provides off the bench.”
Then bring him off the f-cking bench and start T-Mac like a normal person.
$5 says Vlad plays at least 15 minutes at power forward in this game and gets his ass kicked on the boards by Taj Gibson during those minutes, while Ivan sits on the bench.
$5 more says T-Mac plays less than 15 minutes.
$5 more says Joe is going to shoot under 40% in large part because of having to guard Luol Deng on defense.
Rose is back, Bulls will be energized, and the Hawks are floundering. Bulls by 15 is my prediction.

With the Bulls coming off of an embarrassing loss to NJ, they will be highly motivated to bounce back in front of a home crowd and nationally televised game. The bookings got them winning by 10.5. Since they are 11-2 in their building this season, this perhaps is factored into the winning margin.
Given the fragile, depleted, and now struggle Hawks, this could get ugly. The question may not be whether we lose or not, but whether we put forth a respectable effort to make the game entertaining to watch.

OK, I have a bad feeling about this game. I want to believe that the Hawks will come out to try to prove something, but… ugh, Larry Drew will probably mess it up some how. We’ll probably be winning at some point, then Larry Drew will put Rad at the 5, or something stupid like that.
Also, if Teague comes out at the 6 minute mark and is playing well at that point, I’m going to blow a gasket.

Marvin should see 8-9 minutes a game the most give his minutes to Tmac Marvin is garbatron to the maximum Willie Green is respectable but cmon manage this depleted roster better than this they have no Drose tonight there should be no reason we dont win but then again it is the Hawks

I’m sure T-Mac will be ready seeing Willie getting the start.
LD knows what he’s doing…..so does his opponent.
And even if Wille exceeded Marvin’s numbers, he has no chance in staying in the first unit. Marvin pays way too much to lose his slot.

There is no way possible that Drew believes this. I have come to the conclusion that Drew has no idea what he is doing. I have not seen him take advantage of any mismatches this year except for the Pheonix game, when he kept going to Josh on the post, but then he went right back to the Iso Joe play at the end, and almost cost us the game. If you look at matchups then why did you not play Ivan Johnson in the Philly game, when Elton Brand was killing us on the boards. If you look at matchups then why do you keep starting Marvin Williams, who has given you nothing all year, when Green, and TMac obviously give you more, and should be starting. If you look at matchups, why do you keep giving Joe the ball at the top of the key when he is guarded by much smaller players, instead of posting him up? Effort and energy don’t help when you are outmatched, and playing 5 agianst 3 offensively every night.

So LD said he looks at matchups. FTPB, Najeh talking about the Blazers game.
There are 48 minutes to be played at the PF position and C position, totaling 96 minutes.
Josh played 41 minutes
Zaza played 28
Ivan played 4
That adds up to 73.
That means the Hawks were trying to get by with perimeter players (mostly Vlad) for 23 minutes at one or both of the big man positions. Not to mention, Josh has the body of a swingman to begin with..
The Hawks were terrible on the boards, so I dont know which matchups LD was looking at.

They were both career assistants before last year, but one of them came in and asserted himself and infused his style of coaching into the play of his team, and now they’re probably the best defensive team in the league. The other passively makes comments about a lack of energy, commands zero respect, and essentially reminds me of the kid in little league who was afraid of the ball so he’d close his eyes and swing, hoping he’d hit something…

The shooting percentages and turnovers are not that different for these teams, but the Bulls have 10 extra shot attempts in this game. That’s the difference so far, and it’s because they have dominated the glass, especially on the offensive end.

Not to beat a dead(beat) coach, but a team takes on the personalities of its leaders and coach. Man would the Hawks be better off not resigning Joe and having all that cap space… I mean even Willie could produce as much as Joe has this season, both on the defensive and offensive ends of the floor. The contract will easily be remembered as one of the worst in history after it is over

G-Dad: Let me try to resolve these burning questions:
Why Is LD starting a guard in place of Marv; who is supposedly a sf ?
Because our team is so versatile
*Who will show emotion 1st Joe or LD ?
It’s a tie; both are cool under pressure, and blowouts.
*If Josh and Boozer got in a fight & nobody was there to hold them back;
does it make a sound ?
Josh will blame the politics of the NBA
*Does Noah show up that is the question ?
Noah punks us aplenty…simply embarrassing based on hustle alone. The guy has little skill, but effort out the wazoo.
Besides Al; [he's hurt] who within our core, would yawl trade for Noah ?
I give our entire starting frontcourt…..effort over no-rebounders anytime.
*Thibodeau or LD ? … -just kidding-
You answered that yourself G-Dad
*Ivan & Joe for Boozer & Asik ?
Chicago isn’t answering the call from Sund.
*Josh gets a quadruple double / Rose goes for 30/10 / who wins
Josh will never get a q-dup…..odds to Rose all day
**[Josh; pts, rebs, assts, turnovers]**
**Think about it** 30/10; what does that mean ?

OK, time for a Joe report. Joe makes approximately $109,991.00 per half game. So for the Hawks 109k+ they got a sum total of: 4 pts, 1 reb, 2 ast and 1 to.
Let’s see that’s about $27,500.00 per point. Good work if you can get it.

Noah and boozer aren’t soft like bosh was Ivan Johnson should not have came in before dampier damn it. and I’m tired of this blowouts the first few maybe its the players but when it becomes a habit its the coach. Fire LD right now damn it. Get us a coach thats gonna get josh ass inb gear about his shot selection. and if Josh doesn’t freaking like ship his out of here too. Idc if JJ is over paid and i don’t care if josh might be the best player on the team but his ass does not need to be having more attempts than JJ. Atleast his shot selection isn’t terrible. Everything josh oes right he screws us over with terrible shot selection and terrible lazy ass passes. i am ready for him to go damn it. i maybe wrong but i doubt it.

marvin-good first half play, hit jumpers off curls and had a couple AFV falls to go along. oh he’s not playing? not even in CHI? didnt notice, oops
josh- only hawks who cares and plays strong. sad to think he’s peoples scapegoat for the hawks poor play.
zaza-get a flagarant in the 2nd half and try to evoke something from our guys, some inspiration.
willie g- playing consistent but 12 pts isnt gona be enough for us to win, willie is our best bench player right now.
kirk- reduced to a defender and passer, cant seem to hit shots regularly.
tmac- finding out how professional the hawks organization is
ivan- no way vlad should be in the game before ivan and this shows how a glimmer of a 3pt shooter can effect a coach over energy,D, and toughness

This team is a dumb team. Good smart disciplined teams beat teams like the “Ducks” in the second round of the playoffs everytime.
Drew was in the huddle telling them to “Hit the glass and look for good shots.” They came out and kept doing the same thing they always do.
LD is not the right guy for the “Ducks.”
Teague is lost out there.
Josh still thinks he can shoot.
No Sho Joe is at it again.
Zaza is the clumbsiest NBA player i have ever seen.
But most noticable of all is they dont share the ball or move it around enough and thats when everybody starts to jack up shots and when the shots stop falling, you can see their body language. They start shutting it down.
This “Core” has to be broken up!

yes i think he has hit his ceiling. he is a great athlete who can get by defenders yet he averages 4.7 assists a game? our starting PG averaging less than 5 assists a game? grevies vasquez for NOH averages more assists per game than jeff (5). seeing how jeff teague acts on the court i would say he is who is supposed to be. a athlete who can score in the paint but doesnt have a pass first mentality and is a mediocre shooter. he is a very good PG but i would take a lot of other PGs in the NBA over him.

i am not sick of lin but sick of the hysterics of advertising, marketing and new yorkers. if there was ever more a superficial group of people it is them on display once again. those are the ones behind the hype not lin wanting to be on the train. i like watching him play, before this it was the decision, but queen was raised to be arrogant, lin not.
lin in fact was a product of bias and prejudice to keep him out of it for so long. he was an all star high schooler in california that couldnt smell a major college scholarship, took good teams like uconn in 2010 with kemba walker and embarrassed them on the big stage at their place and still got overlooked draft day. what happened? then he comes in gets a chance, delivers and all folks want to talk about his turnovers as if kobe didnt throw up 10 yesterday. geez.
no, lin is not the problem, we are; i hope he continues somehow, unjaded, to continue to play like he has, as a reminder to us all. just wish luck would have dropped him here only ld would have squelched him by now. funny melo apparently went to d’antonio and told him to give the kid a chance. what happens when baron is ready?

The Hawks and Bulls are still pretty much shooting the same percentages they had at halftime. But Josh and Zaza played PF and C that entire quarter. No Josh at C, no Vlad at PF. Zaza didn’t even play particularly well, but that’s the difference when you actually play real big men at the power positions instead of trying to get away with a 6′11″ shooting guard at power forward.

Marvin usually plays well when he is close to home, so I think the last Blazers game was the exception. As much as I think Pargo deserves more PT, I wont use this performance to justify it, because he is extra motivated.
But Kirk 2-6, playing 20 minutes so far.
Teague, 2-3 in 18 minutes.

Notes from this loss:
1. Tracy should be the first man off the bench regardless for whether its for Josh, Joe or Teague. Tracy should be playing the ” point forward ” position and he needs to be playing at least 25 minutes and he should be getting 10 shots.
2. Pargo should supplant Vlad as their ” 3pt specialist ” or they should share minutes at that role.
3. Hinrich’s minutes should be cut to 15
4. Vlad should only be playing If there is serious foul trouble at the 4 position and even then it should be bit minutes.

Hawks need to order TMac some pain medicine, because this team has several little shooting guards but not a true PG. TMac, Josh and Joe remain the team’s best facilitators. 4 assists and 23 FGAs from Teague, Kirk and Pargo.

“now if we could just these numbers from pargo and willie (before tonight) every night and not once in a blue moon. we got to many potential scorers and not enough ” we are going to score’ scorers”
This is the difference between guys like Willie Green, and Jamal Crawford. Jamal has proven that he can score on a nightly basis, and Willie Green has not. Thus the difference is salaries. I like Willie Green, but if you are depending on him and Pargo to score to win games, then you are in real trouble. There is no excuse for Pargo not getting major minutes. None at all.

7 for 21 and that says nothing to Josh Smith. Know why, he got 17 points and 12 rebounds so in his mind he is the MAN! The HAWKS are done for this season, they will continue to lose in a fast and furious pace. There will be no playoffs and if by some chance the HAWKS did make it, then we are talking being knocked out the first round.
This season is over and i’m hoping for the rest of it to move quickly. There will be many more games of dumb coming around the bend. This team and coach are pitiful, just pitiful. When a player cannot realize he’s not a superstar the rest of the team is going to suffer. Get ready for one stupid roller coaster ride. This is just the beginning.

Like I said. Kirk and Vlad shouldn’t be part of the regular rotation. That 3 point brick off the top of the backboard that Vlad shot was unbelievable.
Hawks have been needing another rebounded for years. Sund still can’t get us one
The closest is Ivan, but he can’t even get on the floor anymore.
Smith can’t play 40+ minutes every night, so Drew or Sund better address this.
Nice 2nd half by Pargo. Dude was garbage in the first few weeks of the season, but has come on nicely since then. Having said that, he should only play when he is playing well. Hope teague’s confidence isn’t shot now. Gotta get him back in the groove. T-Mac played decent, played a heady game today.

“Tracy should be the first man off the bench regardless for whether its for Josh, Joe or Teague. Tracy should be playing the ” point forward ” position and he needs to be playing at least 25 minutes and he should be getting 10 shots.”
I’ll go a step further and say he should be starting. I don’t think he should be playing more than 25 minutes, mainly because I’d rather see him healthy when the playoffs roll around, but Zaza plays better with him on the floor and starting the game with another pass-first player will get the Hawks off to better starts in my opinion.
Not to mention, considering the putrid lack of big man depth this team has, Marvin off the bench will at least allow the Hawks to bring in a guy who can crash the boards. Rebounding is one thing Marvin has consistently done well this season.
Start Teague-Joe-TMac-Josh-Zaza
Let Marvin be the first guy to come in off the bench, give Willie Green his 15-20 minutes or so, and make sure a real big man is playing at PF and C at all times. That means when Josh and Zaza go out of the game, Ivan or Dampier replace them, not Vlad.
And once they trade Kirk for a big man, let that big man take those backup minutes with Ivan picking up the scraps.

Rod, now there I whole-heartedly agree. Rebounding, offense and mental issues. Toss is some emotional problems as well.
On a completely different note, I sincerely hope that Greg Oden makes one of the greatest comebacks in professional sports history. Dude seems like he tries time and time again to get ready and his body keeps failing him. I know that knee problems are different from foot problems, but I recall that Ilgauskas was a walking-wounded player before things got so good the we forgot about his early woes. Probably wishful thinking on my part, but I hope the same becomes true for Oden Pretty much his entire rookie contract tenure has been spent in the operating room and in rehab. Seems like a decent guy… I hope that he can stay strong through the latest setback.

I see this Marvin report comes from Chris Broussard, whose sources are not always that accurate.
Regardless, he does mention this in the same article:
The feeling among some in Atlanta is that the Hawks’ rotation was thrown out of whack by the return of Kirk Hinrich. The Hawks started the season 13-5 but have gone just 6-8 since Hinrich returned from shoulder surgery. Though he’s struggled this season, one would think Hinrich could help a club if made available.
At least someone in the organization recognizes it.

Seriously? Averaging 4 points in 10 sporadic minutes per game is not bad at all. Give him Teague’s numbers and his stats will be up there with Teague’s… You can’t play down the argument by comparing stats because of the huge minute gap. Teague and Pargo are not similar at all. Teague is a drive it to the hole type guard who rarely passes it into the paint. Pargo is a jump shooter that has decent passing skills.

Can you blame him? If I were Marvin, I would have been asking to be traded ever since Jamal arrived on the team in 2009. People constantly complain about Marvin like he’s supposed to be put up great numbers when he is basically the last option when he is on the floor. Marvin has always had the offensive ability to warrant a bigger role, but he’s never given it, since this team is all about favorites. I can’t believe that Marvin has such a limited role on offense when you consider the make-up of the team. Josh Smith, one of the most inefficient starting big men in the league has been taking close to 20 shots a night while shooting very inefficiently and taking shots that we know he isn’t going to make at a high clip (long jump shots), yet L.D. has no problem with it, but guys like T-Mac can’t see the floor to score points and guys like Marvin barely get the ball on offense.
I really dislike L.D. as a coach and the combination of him being in control on the sidelines and Horford being injured has made this season incredibly disappointing for me. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. With a depleted team and a poor head coach, I don’t see the Hawks really going to anywhere positive soon.
Anyway, who would want to stay on a team where they are mistreated for no apparent reason? Good for Marvin if he really is looking to go somewhere else and not let his entire career waste away. I’m glad T-Mac spoke out about his lack of playing time too. That’s a good start. Aside from Josh and Joe (L.D.’s favorite players), I don’t see anyone else on the team that would be happy with their current situation, other than maybe guys stackhouse who are getting paid and not having to play much at all.

No he hasn’t.
People who have the offensive ability to warrant a bigger role make layups and don’t get stripped or fall down every other time they get in the lane.
Marvin is at times a good role player. He’s consistently been a good rebounder this year, generally has been a good defender, and has generally been good at knocking down open shots. That doesn’t warrant a bigger role. If it did, some team would have given Shane Battier or Bruce Bowen the license to jack up 20 shots per game by now. Marvin is a less coordinated, poor man’s version of them. He is not and has never been anything close to a go-to offensive option.

2) Josh Smith doing everything, despite not shooting well.
3) Joe Johnson NOT doing what Josh does for the team. Oh how the times have changed.
4) Somebody explain to me why we keep going perimeter all the time when we need guys who will fight for rebounds and play tough? Ivan Johnson got to play 2 minutes.
5) Jannero Pargo comes of the bench and drops damn near 20 on the Bulls. Gee, maybe he should be playing a tad more. Just a tad.
6) Hinrich still ain’t there. Teague ain’t there, either. Another downer game.
7) Did we miss Marvin? Heh, not really. It would have given Drew another option, and one with size, but two problems: 1. Drew doesn’t know what to do with that anyway, and 2. Marvin doesn’t play his size.

Hmmmm…let me see.
1) #2 pick in the 2005 draft – that might have something to do with expectations, but what do I know?
2) Back in the day when Josh couldn’t do anything more than finish on the fast break, Marvin had plenty of chances. What about when Flip Murray was here? They let Al Harrington go down the road for free, with nothing in return. Why? So Marvin could take his place and be even better.
Don’t give me that BS. Marvin’s had more chances than anybody on this team.
3) Playing favorites….that’s hilarious. Marvin was a higher offensive option during Al Horford’s rookie year in the League. Same thing in Al’s second year. If you don’t believe me, go look at the shot attempts. So don’t tell me he’s the last option on the floor. That’s total BS as well.
If Marvin is the last option NOW, it’s because he has the least heart, the least drive, and the least amount of “IT” that it takes to be a higher volume scorer.
I mean GD, Jeff Teague averages more than he does now, and he’s the smallest guy on the floor, and somebody who didn’t get even get to start until this year, because somebody put a foot in LD’s arse after Teague’s showout in the 2nd round of last year’s playoffs (Hinrich being hurt again also helped).
Marvin wants to move on? Let’s help him out the door so he can go be a wuss elsewhere.

The play of JJ, Teague, and Marvin can be tied directly to your head coach or lack thereof. The wild out of control play of Josh Smith is also tied to your head coach. Hawks fans, there are very very few coaches around the league that would have Josh Smith, you guys have him way overrated.

People who have the offensive ability to warrant taking 20 shots a night don’t shoot 29% from 3 point range and 33% from beyond 3 feet of the basket, but that doesn’t seem to stop Josh Smith from leading the team in field goal attempts on an almost nightly basis. Also, keep in mind that Josh is an interior player, meaning that his field goal percentage should be higher than the league average, since big men typically have the highest field goal percentages since they score a good portion of their points near the basket.
On another team with more offensive talent, Marvin shouldn’t be complaining, but on a team like the Hawks which is not full of adept scorers and is injured to begin with, Marvin has a legit beef. Any player has to wonder why he is an afterthought on offense while guys who need 20+ shots to get close to 20 points are the first options. Yes, Marvin is overpaid, but if you are going to overpay him, you might as well use him when your team is depleted to begin with.
With the team in it’s current condition, even Willie Green could argue that he should be the second option on offense.

It’s not that complicated. LD’s entire philosophy is built on attacking. Doesn’t matter how many minutes you get. You get minutes based on whether or not your attacking offensively or defensively. There will always be someone on that bench ready to come in and attack. That’s how Teague and Marvin lose their minutes. Teague was 1 of 10 against Portland and kept his minutes just because he was agressive. Teague and Marvin don’t play Mario west like defense or Jamal Crawford like offense. Teague can produce offensively, but his defense is not enough to just give him minutes for the sake of it.

I beg to differ that Joe Johnson “gets it”. The only thing Joe Johnson “gets” is paid. He’s really not concerned about anything else and he didn’t give himself that contract so you can’t blame him. Also it appears L.D. spends more time developing quotes for losses than effective plays for the team. He’s never short on reasons as to why they lose.

Marvin’s field goal percentage is lower than Josh’s despite the fact that Marvin is also usually wide open for his jumpers, never has to create his own shot, and has never faced a double team in his entire career.
On a team with championship caliber talent, Josh should be the 3rd or 4th option on offense. He’s forced to be the #1 option on this team because Joe is declining and Teague hasn’t yet learned how to finish at the rim consistently.

It seems like Josh is never going to figure out that he shouldn’t be out there trying to be a scorer. He’s not a scorer. He should leave the scoring to other players, and just try to get his points by running the floor, slashing to to the hoop, and finishing strong at the rim. If Josh really wants to increase his scoring, he should also work on scoring in the post against smaller players. Until he gets a real coach, I don’t think he’ll ever realize this. Josh desperately needs a coach who can designate a role for him.
Also, L.D. needs to go easy on Josh with the minutes. He’s the only versatile big man we have left on the team with Horford injured, and if L.D. keeps riding him for full games, he’s going to be exhausted by the time the playoffs roll around, which will result in even more jump shots from him.

Get ready for Linsanity! I really like what this guy is doing. The reason I bring this up is because the guy is taking advantage of his opportunity to play. He has a coach that believes in him, keeping in mind he was the 15th man on the bench. They have been waiting on Byron Davis to get healthy.
What’s great about it is the guy plays with Melo,Amare,Chandler and he was buried behind Chauncey, Douglas, Shumpert, & Davis. Since he has taken over at the point, he has scored the most points in February than any player in the NBA. He dropped 38 on the Lakers & Kobe had 28. He quickly gained a mindset of Elite NBA player, while playing with all these Elite players. Even with the major tunrovers they are winning and he is a major factor. His coach believes he can run the offense, like his former point guard, Steve Nash…you got to love the way the guy as stepped into his opportunity…NY is abuzz!
Now we as Atlanta fans want the same buzz, but Joe Johnson refuses to develope the mindset to lead his team and he is a 6 time All Star.
Teague has a commercial on TV talking about he is the Future, but he does not have the confidence to challenge Josh on the shot selections or take Drew’s criticism without it affecting his game…unlike Lin, he does not have the trust of his coach; Teague’s turnover ratio is 10 times better. Teague has a higher impact on games than JJ when he is being aggressive.
We had our version of Linsanity, with Ivan Johnson, but Drew put an end to that high end production with DNP’s and reduced minutes. Now he is messing with Ivan’s aggressiveness.
So I am enjoying the Linsanity, and hopeful Drew sees first hand what happens win you Coach a player up, build their confidence, and allow a player to aspire to be great, and yet humble like Lin.
By the way, if JJ does not play in New York, look for him to skip the All Star game, and Josh will be named as his replacement.

LOL. Josh is not “forced” to be the number one option on offense at all. He simply wants to take a lot of shots. He’s always been this way. There are tons of occurrences where Josh has the ball and there is plenty of time left on the clock for him to pass to someone else and he instead decides to launch a long , low-percentage shot. He likes to try and be a “hero”. It’s obvious. Josh thinks that he’s a great player, you can see it in his comments that he has a false sense of entitlement. Look at his comments each time he doesn’t make the all-star team. He acts like he is better than everyone who is selected over him and like he can’t possibly play better than as great as he thinks he’s playing. Josh leading the team in field goal attempts is not due to Joe declining, it’s due to the fact that he wants to shoot the ball and thinks that he’s the best option to score most of the time. Look at how he yells at Teague when he doesn’t get the ball during the games.
By the way, you’ve heard Josh acknowledge his errors or mistakes and say he wants to get better? Think about it. That should tell you something. He thinks he can do no wrong and that he’s some sort of hall-of-fame caliber player.

“Rod, don’t me mad at me because you said something stupid 48 hours after your boy was a no show. Jamal has been a better scorer over his career, that is obvious, but that doesn’t mean he still has it. What may have happened 2+ years ago isn’t terribly relevant.” – Astro Joe
The top six leading scorers for the Portland Trail Blazers this [regular] season going into tonight’s game vs. the Los Angeles Lakers are as follows:
LaMarcus Aldridge – 22.5ppg
Jamal Crawford – 14.0ppg
Gerald Wallace – 13.8ppg
Nicholal Batum – 13.6ppg
Wesley Matthews – 12.6ppg
Raymond Felton – 10.1ppg
As the second leading scorer while coming off the bench for a new team under a new head coach in a new [basketball] system in new city is pretty good for Jamal Crawford in my opinion.

The Hawks should try and pursue Pau Gasol if he’s really on the market. I doubt he’d want to come here though. It would be great to get some added size and skill with Gasol though. We could offer the Lakers another forward in Josh Smith and a point guard in Kirk Hinrich, as well as whatever else they might like to have from the team.

My company, a very small company has owned two season tickets for 24 years. We are five rows behind basket on Hawks end. I SWEAR this is the FINAL season I buy them. My wife and I LOVE the NBA. I want to say we love the Hawks, but how can any fan love this team? I’m a reasonably bright man, but I cannot figure out how can this organization can be so consistently incompetent every season? I mean from the front office on down.
We have only missed two home games this season, and they were due to our travel. However, we’ve offered the tickets to the remaining games to company office staff. My assistant, who was embarrassed, turned me down, even after offering free parking. $112/ticket. Geeeez…….

Look last year the hawks started strong and then played 500 ball.they were getting blown out almost every time in the last 10 games & then played Orlando in the playoffs.Orlando played horrible & we got pasted them. Then we played chicago & did not play good the only reason we won 2 games was that jT played great. The hawks started great this year & are just repeating last year . This coach doesnt know how to run an offense, worst yet he has terrible judgement on every other aspect of the game. The only players game that hasnt declined under his leadership is Josh & that is debatable. This team is so messed up with his pattern of substitutions. He has gone out of his way to destroy JT who is the only one he holds accountable. Josh & Joe will not let JT run the offense as neither will LT. We all certainly know that KH is not the point guard of the future,LDwill screw upJT ,caused us two 1st round draft picks. This team is doomed with this nitwit in charge.

this team has nobody that plays aggerssively in attacking the basket which creats pressure and adjustments by the defense. All they do is stand around looking for a jump shot and they are not a good jump shooting team. All you have to do is play zone defense against the Hawks and beat them every time. I dont know why Josh Smith wont post up on the low block, he is always calling for the ball 15 and 16 ft from the basket.

What is up with Teague? How is it that he only took 3 shots the entire game? He sucks, he is not aggressive enough, and please don’t blame the coach for him not being aggressive. Teague has no confidence in himself, and needs to be coming off the bench. It is frustrating because fans want Teague to take hold of this team, but he refuses to do so. Where is the Teague that played in the playoffs last year?

The game from an Abstract View:
Since I did not see the game; my only analysis is from stats.
My conclusion.
*Josh Smith & Zaza remain the only two starters who are effective
Josh = double / double while Zaza plays ‘`up`’ to his ability level.
*We left 6 or 7 points on the table – missed FT’s.
*We lost the game in the 1st Qtr. / Mental Preparation; Pure & Simple.
These are grown men & professionals; this is on the players.
*Out-Rebounded (again) However; this is different;
the bench was out-rebounded by the starters 22 to 19.
Yet the starters played 148 min; bench only 92 min.
Once again Josh and Zaza did all the rebounding for the starters.

i think the big reason josh keeps getting heavy minutes lately is b/c we keep getting blown out early and have to climb back so LD so goes with the players he feels will give him energy ala the suns game, also due to this month being against tougher competition, it’s not like we are playing a lot of sub .500 teams and blowing them out by 3rd quarter to rest our starters, plus our rebounding deficiency is at all time high now

Lol @ people talking about Marvin in a game he didn’t even play in. And as for his alleged unhappiness, I don’t blame him. He’s the Hawks deep threat, yet, Drew acts like everyone but him can make a three.
In a year in which Marvin has improved his play, he gets less minutes, and more blame.
People want him to “step up”, but can’t even get enough shots per game to show if he can or not.
Marvin has no doubt been a huge disappointment for a #2 pick. But history will show that he isn’t the garbage player that people make him out to be. It’ll show that he was just a consistently average player. Nothing special in any area. Just average all the way around.
If the reports are true, he’s just tired of people ragging on him all the time, even when he plays well. Like he’s the sole reason for the Hawks not reaching the next level. Dude is just a role player who isn’t even allowed to play his role at times.

During a stretch of 4 games from Jan. 29th through Feb. 4th, Ivan averaged 23.5 minutes, 9.5 points and almost 8 rebounds per game playing primarily as backup center. During that stretch, the Hawks out-rebounded 3 of 4 opponents. In the 7 games that followed, Ivan averaged 8 minutes, 3 points and 2 rebounds. In those 7 games, the Hawks were out-rebounded by 6 opponents. Against Chicago, Ivan played 2 minutes and the Hawks were out-rebounded 51-41

My trade puts the clock on the Hawks for this year and the next before a possible total rebuild in the summer of 2013. That trade clears us of JJs contract while adding Gasol’s. If Deron decides to leave in the summer of 2013, we could execute a sign and trade for someone. We now also have cap room to rebuild the team.

Sund and especially Gearon would rather hold onto all of our pieces until they prove beyond a shadow of a doubt thar they can’t get it done. Even if that “shadow” is already obvious.
I gotta give Mitch Kupchak the GM of the Lakers credit. He puts whatever personal feelings he has about a player, and puts the needs or wants of the team first. Even if his superstar player disagrees. That takes balls to do.
Meanwhile, Sund doesn’t want to upset players with trade talk. And Gearon is afraid to gamble by approving a groundshaking move.
If management is serious about competing for a title, they may have to admit that our top level talent simply isn’t good enough. Don’t get all emotional about moving them. Just do what is for the good of the team.
If they can’t be moved, then we have no choice but to roll with them. But if we can move them for an upgrade in top level talent, make a move. And don’t blink when you do it.

From the ajc article online;
“I don’t know, man,” Josh Smith said of the Hawk’s lack of motivation. .
Josh sounds like JJ in his answer. And haven’t we been hearing this for years now (ever since Woody was here)? But that’s probably a better answer than Bibby’s “we’ll be alright” comments.
More from Josh;
“We are all in this foxhole together. Nobody is to blame but everybody. We all have to put ourselves in one foxhole and we have to figure it out together.”.
Although the Lin story is over-exposed, one of the things I like about him, is after every game, he tells you what ‘he’ needs to do to get better. Last night, he said he had a terrible game against Deron Williams, and needs to get better defensively. When he hit the game winning shot in Toronto, his first comments were he didn’t do a good job slowing down the Raptors guards. He always talks about needing to do a better job taking care of the ball etc.
One thing I’ve noticed with the Hawks, is after these games, players always talk about “we” need to figure it out. “We” need to play better. “We” are in this together. And let’s not forget JJ’s “I don’t get all the credit when we win, so why should I get all the blame when we lose”.
I wish the Hawks players would hold themselves more accountable, instead of always putting it on the team. Talk about what you should have done better individually first. And then talk about the team.

Northcyde,
Trade JJ + 1st round 2012 for Deron Williams.
I don’t think the Nets will trade Deron. And if he opts out, they will work out a sign and trade to get some assets back (imo).
As for JJ, he missed 25 games in 06-07, but starting in 07-08, these are JJ’s games played for the season: 82, 79, 76, 72. I’m not a Math genius, but I notice a trend. And now his knee is hurting. And he turns 31 this year.
Good luck finding a taker for his him. He has a terrible contract (4 years, $82 mil left after this year), he’s getting old (31 this year, which is old for shooting guards), and his game is in decline, down from 21,5 and 5 two years ago, to 18, 4 and 4 this year.

Astro Joe- Teague has 14 games where he attempted 10 shots or more and had 30+minutes of playing time. He has 6 games where he played less than 30 minutes and attempted 10 or more shots. Blowouts are not accounted for. He is almost guaranteed playing time just to be aggressive offensively. He doesn’t even have to score, play good defense, or even attempt a shot. All he has to do is look like hes going to make something happen. Hinrich and Pargo rarely get 20+ minutes regardless of whether or not they earn it. Teague more than anyone else on this team(minus Marvin) is more likely to be given a free pass than be pulled for being passive.

So glad McGrady spoke out about his fustrations with coach Larry Drew because Drew is a nice guy but a below average coach. The Hawks management decided replace Woodson with a cheaper version that cannot maximize the talents of his starters and consistently under utilizes his bench. Right after Horford’s injury, Ivan gave the Hawks a great and unexpected life with his energy and effort . All of a sudden he cannot get on the floor . He played 2 minutes in the loss to the Bulls. No explanation from Drew, yet he continues to play other unproductive players I guess because they are getting paid more money .Its very fustrating to players when they don’t know their roles or when or if they will play. I believe the players have lost respect for Drew and have tuned him out. You get what you pay for so all we are going to get in the ATL is more mediocrity. I think JJ has figured out that this organization is not willing to do what it takes to win championships and will continue to be what it is now. That’s why he took his 120 million so that at least he can be well paid for having to play in mediocrity for the next 6 years.

And the excuses continue for primetime collapses.
The Braves are our ONLY pro sports team left that doesn’t
THRIVE on getting embarrassed on national TV just about every chance they get. Yet they wonder why fans don’t flock to downtown Atlanta in droves to see these multimillionaires play mediocre ball in person. I even heard the local sports station talking today about how “we can’t be a #7 or #8 seed because that would mean we play either Chicago or Miami right away and lose in the first round”. As opposed to automatically losing in the second round? WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE??? A week?
The Hawks fans should call some old Sain’ts fans and borrow their paper bags, not because the Hawks are so bad, but because they are SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD. They are supposed to be getting better, but there is zero proof in recent past that this is happening. These guys have cornered the market on disappointment, with the Falcons coming in at number 2.
How many of you out there have a backup plan ALREADY IN PLACE, whether it is to watch another sports program or a movie or even a household chore to do, when the Hawks start losing BIG in on these nationally televised games?

Come into JJ’s house and run amok…
Does he take note? Does he mark the calendar, is he pissed…
Well, stats don’t indicate so, there no vengance in the blood here…
More or less, its just a game, its just business as usual…
Around this time of year, players on the hot stove start taking dives…
Yesterday it was Marvin, today JJ, lets see about tommorrow…
Hopefully, they’ve seen enough to really shake this thing up…
I’ve often wondered whether it was better to tweak this roster…
Or if presented an opportunity, to get from under JJs contract…
Maybe the latter, is a reality, more than a fantasy…
When you see what the NYKnicks have assembled…
And this team’s 10 game performance (3-7)…
It’s painfully clear that we wont get out the 1st rd…

nicely put o’b. i cant say we think alike but themes and interests are similar. as you know that is one of my pet peeves with these guys. it certainly isnt the mo of jj to put it on himself, josh tends to shirk it, al may come close, zaza usually doesnt defend himself in those tones, marvin is oblivious and presents himself as the golden retriever everything is cool persona while doing nothing ever to really improve himself or hold himself accountable. it just goes on. sorry, it doesnt start at ld when he cant hold himself accountable for things like his egregious mismanagement of the miami loss allowing bosh to get a shot off with fouls to give and a three point lead and only 5 seconds to go. certainly not at the gearon level where it is fans and jeff schulz’ fault for not having more gate success.
long this team has made terrible losses acceptable going back to the celt series where we got blown out in four away games. it didnt change with the cav blowout. last year they seemed to be a little angry with themselves over the magic trouncing. unfortunately, those memories are seared in fan’s mind. the only thing that can change it is the players. i dont think they get it.

Did anyone see Hinrich yesterday waving frantically to Josh to pass the ball to Green and then throw his hands up in frustration when Josh looked both of them off and took the shot(brick) instead?
I hope i was not the only person to see that. I am convinced now that Josh Smith will NEVER get it.
But how can he get it when management and Larry Drew dont? Im mean, what coach in the NBA would let a PF with no shooting ability throw up 20 shots a game? He went what, 9-20? That hurt and i dont care who you are, when you are busting your tail getting back into a game and the worst shooter on the team is throwing up clunkers, its demoralizing!
And thats just one aspect of the “Ducks” game. They are a dumb team, they play selfish and they cant shoot free throws. They were 10 of 21 from the stripe! T-Mac missed 3 in a row at one point!
And they need to stop shooting but they cant because Sund keeps thinking they dont need another inside presence. When you can get anything inside you tend to try from outside. Check out the numbers:
KH 1-4
JJ 0-3
Vlad 0-4
WG 0-2
Overall total 9-25 from 3 pt range combined with no rebounding and poor FT shooting will get your butts kicked everytime!
And Joe Johnson and Josh Smith shouldnt be captains on anyones team in the NBA.

And poor Zaza, he is the only other guy they have that gets down in the paint and bag bodies, but the problem with him is he is clumsy as heck. Maybe it has to do with his hands and feet being to small for his body or something.
But i wouldnt throw him the ball on offense, just tell him to throw his body around. But its also clear that LD needs to play Dampier more. LD has to be the dumber more stubborn version of Woodson. Down two centers, they sign a guy and then dont use him…whats that all about?
And Teague is done, i would start Hinrich and follow him up with Pargo. Bad sign when your 3rd string PG scores the most points and your 6 time all-star and wanna be all-star both fold like lawn chairs.
I would trade Joe and Josh for anything i could get and play the guys with HEART(what Joe lacks) and SMARTS(Everybody knows who) over those two.
Flip em for Stephen Jackson/Erson Ilysasova or Rudy Fernandez/Bird Man Anderson or heck i would do Metta World Peace/Gasol!

This is from Hoopinion’s report card about yesterday’s game. It’s long, but a good read (imo), and I have sprinkled in some of my comments.
Players:
Josh Smith: The numbers looked good: 17 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks in 43 minutes. But Smoove shot only 7-for-21, all of his points coming in the paint as he went 0-for-8 on jumpers. 5/10.
When will Josh get it? If Josh would get more of his shots inside the paint, and drastically reduce his jumpers, I think he would be a lock for an all-star spot, because his rebounding would go up, and his ppg would go up (imo). I also think that would help the team a lot.
Jannero Pargo: The Hawks were unable to re-sign Jamal Crawford in the off-season and instead replaced him with streak-shooter-by-committee. Tonight’s contributor was Jannero Pargo, a player absurdly listed at 6-foot-1 who does not deserve the designation “point guard.” Pargo’s 19 points were flashy as he shot the team to within 6 with 4 threes over the game’s final 14 minutes. But his ball handling in the 4th quarter? Not so flashy. He started off the 4th with a heat-check three that missed the entire rim, followed with a bad pass straight to noted passing-lane disruptor Kyle Korver, dribbled out the clock and missed a layup, then dribbled into a triple-team on the baseline and pelted it out of bounds off Smoove. 4/10.
Kirk Hinrich: The Hawks are obviously playing Kirk a lot of minutes in an effort to get him in game shape and create some sort of trade value (lest the team receive little in return for the pair of first-round draft picks it traded away to acquire him). But 5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 30 minutes from one of your primary point guards is not going to win you a lot of games in the meantime. 3/10. .
Pargo is streak, and has his bad moments, but Kirk Hinrich is not giving us anything right now. How many games does he need to get his legs back?
Vladimir Radmanovic: With Pargo as the evening’s designated streak shooter, Radmanovic took the night off, shooting 0-for-5 and going scoreless in 12 minutes, although he did collect 5 rebounds. The Hawks are 1-7 in the month of February in games in which Radmanovic plays at least 10 minutes. Two of the Hawks three wins this month came as Vlad averaged 3 minutes against Orlando and Indiana. 1/10
Ivan Johnson: During a stretch of 4 games from Jan. Against Chicago, Ivan played 2 minutes and the Hawks were out-rebounded 51-41. Grade: Incomplete.
So despite the Hawks being outrebounded, Vlad gets more PT than Ivan. I thought LD’s plan was to get more minutes for Ivan. And it’s not like Dampier has been getting minutes either. Najeh, northcyde (and others on here) have asked over and over again. Why does LD insist on giving Vlad the minutes he gets, while cutting Ivan’s minutes? LD has no clue. And speaking of the HC…
The head coach: The Hawks are 5th in the NBA in future committed salaries at over $244 million. To manage that quarter-billion dollar investment in personnel, the Hawks hired a coach with no previous NBA head coaching experience. He looks as in-over-his-head as you would imagine he would be. Since Lenny Wilkens retired, the Hawks have employed Lon Kruger, Terry Stotts, Mike Woodson and Larry Drew as head coaches. Once Drew is let go by the Hawks, it’s hard to imagine that any head coach the organization has employed since 2000-2001 will be in any demand whatsoever by other NBA teams seeking to fill head coaching positions. 1/10
A thought regarding the opposition: With 3:42 to play in the third quarter, Tom Thibodeau angrily called timeout after a Zaza Pachulia run-out layup. As Thibs shouted at his team on the sideline, the scoreboard showed his team ahead by 19..
Doc and I were big fans on Thibs, but 1) He probably had no interest in coming here and 2) Even if he did, ASG would not pay him the salary he deserves. So they hired LD, probably the lowest paid coach in the League.
What’s disappointing as a Hawks fan is we all know our team has faults. But looking at the list of HCs we have hired to maximize their talents… Lon Kruger, Terry Stotts, Mike Woodson and Larry Drew. Ouch.

The one team that’s desperate enough to take Joe Johnson is Orlando. We know they’re not afraid of a bad contract (see Arenas and Lewis). Now, they don’t have much to offer in return. But I think they would send Turkoglu, Reddick & a 2013 1st rd pick (I don’t think they can trade this year’s) to Atlanta for Joe. The reasons this move may work are:
1) This gets us back below this year’s luxury tax. I think we save $1M+ on this swap.
2) I think we can flip Reddick to a team like Minnesota for an expiring contract and another pick (1st or 2nd rounder, whatever we can get).
3) Turkoglu is similar in age to Joe, but makes half the money, has a year less on his deal (maybe 2 if by some chance he waived his player option year), offers us more size at 6′10″, and is a better/more consistent long range shooter.
4) If Dwight walks, then that 2013 1st rd pick could wind up being pretty valuable.

Hawks are struggling to score points. Maybe we should hire a head coach who actually gives a dang about offense. Someone who won’t run plays that involve Josh taking long-distance shots. Someone who will ensure that we don’t have sub-20 point quarters in the second half. Someone who can develop an offense that doesn’t stagnate and isn’t so predictable. A head coach who understands how to properly use his bench and make situational substitutions. Someone who will hold players accountable and someone who is clearly and irerefutably better than Woody. That’s what the Hawks need and we’re destined for greatness.

STRETCH…I couldn’t have said it better myself.
The problem with trading “Cold Joe” is that everbody knows what we know. “Poutin’ Josh” could be easily traded to an elite team that needs defensive help, but they would have rework the contract to stipulate “pine sitting” penalties for excessive brick-throwing (and we have seen how well Josh works with authority). It’s no wonder he didn’t get the coaches vote for the ASG.

Another tough night and it would have been embarrassing if it wasn’t for Pargo doing work against the Chicago reserves. My problem with last night is LD gave up making moves. He got lucky that Pargo starting missing and the Chicago reserves started turning the ball over. The zone was another good move that was effective in slowing down Rose’s drives to the basket. But those were his last moves, he needed to continue. I think his final move was to put Vlad in, but he did that with about 2 min left in the game. LD didn’t change the line-up for almost the entire the 4th quarter, just waiting for the guys to do something. They were playing a zone defense so match-ups really didn’t matter, he could have easily substituted one or two guys that would have impacted the game on the offensive side of the ball. LD has to continue to impact the game and not give-up trying.
Josh needs to stop shooting outside, he has other guys that can do that.

It’s obvious to me that something happened in the locker room between players that the Hawks are not reporting. TMac blast the coach for not getting more minutes, and Marvin Williams (who has started since his 2nd year in Atlanta, and never said anything negative since his been here) put out that he wants a bigger role. First of all, no NBA team in their right mind will trade for Marvin Williams, unless they can give up a bigger salary. The guy is just not a good basketball player, who is clumsy, and uncoordinated. Obviously TMac, and some othe the other vets on the team, have become tired of LD talking about energy and effort every night, but the continuing to trot this Marvin Williams clown ou there every night who provides nothing but an occasional jumpshot. Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end of THE CORE.

“Josh Smith had 9 jumpers outside the paint. He missed all 9. Meanwhile, he was 7-12 inside the paint. When will Josh get it????”
ill give 70% of the blame to the coaching staff. they continuously allow Josh to roam the perimeter. Josh could be an effective offensive player, however, he has no filter to his game. Josh will take any shot, from anywhere on the court. even the best shooters in the game have sweet spots. look at Joe for example. he has areas on the floor where he likes to work.
im almost ready to send Josh somewhere where he can play under structure. he’ll never be the player he can be under the watchful eye of the cheapest instruction money can buy.

Maybe a head coach who will set the tone from his very first press conference. About the sophistication of his offense, his ability to optimize the talents of his players by having them shoot from their most effective spots on the floor and produce a culture of effort, energy and accountability. A head coach that would have the blog world excited by the “non-Woody-ness” of his methods.
Man, and if could get that guy on the cheap, all the better.

There is little difference between the offense of Woody and Drew because LD has been the lead assistant since 2004 thus coaching the offensive set where Josh is on the deep elbow and Joe is isoing away.
Atleast Woody would call atleast two lob plays for Josh. Calling a post play for Josh is still iso basketball. You can call variations to the play like setting a screen.

I think it’s possible that the players are getting tired of LD talking about energy, especially during this compressed schedule. They may also be tired of being outrebounded, while LD continues to play Vlad, and does not play Ivan or Dampier enough. Also, LD never accepts any of the blame, and always puts it on the players.
As for the Marvin situation, it is strange that there are rumors out there about him wanting out. Even if they are false, I don’t think there have any been any Marvin rumors (unless it’s about trying to trade him). So I don’t know what’s going on.

From Jeff Schultz;
It’s true that his scoring average of 9.6 points is the lowest of his career. But let’s not suggest that he has been an 18-to-20-scorer in the NBA. His annual averages: 8.5, 13.1, 14.8, 13.9, 10.1, 10.4, 9.6. Career average: 11.6.
Williams has been almost a full-time starter since year two. He has played 458 games. I think we all know by know what he can do.
In 2009, general manager Rick Sund gave Williams, then a free agent, a five-year, $37.5 million contract extension. I’m sure the thought at the time was that, after four years, maybe the small forward would turn all of that athletic ability into something good. But that hasn’t happened. So the Hawks are now stuck with an underwhelming player who makes $7.5 million this season, $8.2875 million next year and a $7.5 million player option in 2013-14.
In other words, Marvin, if you really want out, we hereby give you permission to pick up the phone and find a team that’s interested..
