Atlanta Hawks: Tracy McGrady fumes over playing time

Portland–Hawks forward Tracy McGrady’s private frustrations over his playing time finally boiled over after he played just 4:39 during the 97-77 loss to the Blazers late Saturday.

“I’m tired of this [bleep],” McGrady said. “You can put that in the paper, I don’t give a [bleep].”

McGrady didn’t play after halftime against the Blazers. He didn’t dress for Atlanta’s 101-99 victory at Phoenix Wednesday but said it was his decision to rest for the second game of a back-to-back. Against the Blazers, McGrady never returned after Marvin Williams replaced him with 7:21 left in the first half.

McGrady has played in 26 of 32 games this season for an average of 18 minutes before Saturday’s game. Last season with Detroit McGrady averaged 23 minutes in 72 games.

McGrady said Hawks coach Larry Drew hasn’t offered him an explanation when he doesn’t play him many minutes.

“If you don’t feel I can help, come tell me that,” McGrady said. “He ain’t told me nothing. I just want to help these guys win, man, which I know I can. But, damn, four minutes?”

McGrady made his comments after Drew’s postgame news conference. Earlier this week Drew, speaking generally about the limited amount of minutes available for his many veteran players, said he thinks it’s important to offer them an explanation when they don’t play much.

McGrady said he’s previously approached Drew about the topic but doesn’t plan on doing so again.

“I have before but I’m only going to do that one time,” McGrady said.

Drew has said he’s mindful of saving McGrady’s body from wear and tear. McGrady was a two-time scoring champion before a series of injuries that includes a herniated disk in his back. He suffered back spasms on Jan. 11 and sat out three games.

McGrady said that when he suits up, that means he’s ready to play.

“My body feels great,” McGrady said. “If it didn’t, I wouldn’t play.”

Under CBA rules, McGrady would be eligible for a trade on March 1. He didn’t go so far as to say he wants out of Atlanta but said he wants to play a bigger role for the Hawks.

“Hopefully, I’m here,” he said. “I like it here. I like the guys. That’s what I love most about it. I like the guys in this locker room. But at the same time, I still can play. No doubt in my mind.”

I can’t add.

I cheated the G and F spots out of 2 minutes. So give Willie 2 more minutes to bump him up to 18 minutes a game. And give T-Mac 2 more minutes to increase him to 27 minutes.

Bottom line, I Believe Larry Drew is an idiot of a coach anyways. OK, Why isn’t Ivan Johnson still not getting serious playing time, its like he refuses to play guys who might give us a win, makes no sense. He just starting playing Willie Green again, clearly the Guy is a Idiot, really look at the expression on his face during the game, he looks like he has down syndrome.

This blog is now truly “international” thanks to Mr. Ma. He asked, “How was attendance at the circus last week? Will they be brought in for another week? Will Philips Arena be renamed The Big Top? Could the Hawks be renamed The Barnstormers and remain on the road? Permanently? Watching the Knicks today, it’s apparent, half the game is 90% mental.

McGrady is 32 years old…..his body is not going to wear down. If Jason Kidd can get it done at 40 and Kobe can lead the league in scoring at 33 then T-Mac can play in a back to back situation and he can play many minutes. Also nobody knows why Ivan Johnson has fallen completely out of the rotation. Sign Dampier and don’t even play him…just dumb and bad coaching.

I’m so tired of Larry Drew…the team has no energy because he has none

Why is it that in most NBA games, when a good team gets down by more than 10 you can almost count on the good teams to go on a run and get back in the game. Not so with the hawks, other than the twolves and suns games, when the hawks get down they stay down. No heart and bad coaching.
Any body need season tickets?

Uhh really?? People are actually agreeing with T-Mac. From the games I have watched, aside from a few at the beginning of the year… T-Mac cant shoot, he constantly turns the ball over, he stops ball movement when he gets the ball, and he gets beaten on defense constantly. Why do you want to give him minutes?? The game last night was a prime example of T-Mac recently, shoots 3 hard clanker bricks off the rim, turns it over dribbling off his foot TWICE in a row, gets beaten on defense about 4 times in a row, and then sits down and pouts…why does LD play him at all? I mean other than a few nice passes every now and then what does he offer y’all? Have you seen his horrid shooting touch?? I mean has he made a basket in the last 5 games at all?

I see more than a few people have noticed since Kirk has returned the chemistry of this team has been lost. Teague looks like he is scared to make a mistake cause LD might pull him out the game. Joe Johnson who I have started to refer to as “No Show” Joe because of his lack of producing. What I can’t understand is how LD stays with Marvin even after he has shown he will not make the open shot. Just pull Marvin and put Rad in the game Please…… If Kirk is still on this team sucking minutes from Teague we might not even reach the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!

About 4 games ago LD was saying or contemplating about a lineup change. He’s put the same starting 5 out there every since that statement. I agree with TMAC that he should get more playing time, the way LD uses him is rather screwed. Give TMAC the time Marvin gets and you will see better production in scoring and defense.

Stack needs more playing time also, these guys can help with their knowledge of the game and although some of their skills are on the decline they are still a lot better then some of our starters, that’s a fact plain and simple. Josh will have a good game every now and then but no matter who coaches him the “premodonna complex” will forever be a part of his game. Josh playing under a winning coach that’s credible would be buying bench time and a lot of it. He has skills but the boy has no Basketball IQ.

Wink RE: TMac just want to play. He does not need the money. He chose the Hawks over Chicago, probably because he saw an opportunity to play major minutes and help a team win. We have no marquee talent and were in need of leadership which he could provide.
Rick James RE: This is what always amazes me about sports fans in Atlanta and why our teams will never win anything.
Both of you guys blogs were right on point. TMac IMO, can never be wrong for speaking his mind about the state of affairs in the Hawks team. This kind of stuff goes on all the time and it’s time to put pressure on LD, letting the shiznit flow upstream. LD is vexing the Hawks because of his lack of experience, lack of respect (he never earned it), lack of wisdom (he ain’t gone none), and overall ineptitude for making in-game decisions in the most crucial moments, with respect to the key matchups in the game. LD is not to blame alone. We all know that Hawks management sucks, period. NBA commish David Stern gave them a vote of confidence only because of what he gets out of it. There should be more players on the Hawks like TMac who has the ballz to speak out-when no one else will. Don’t think that other members of the Hawks don’t feel the same way, but they are scared of what their bosses might think. I like TMac’s attitude and I think he called out LD to task. WTF- He ain’t afraid of LD. What has L.D. accomplished?, but coach a team built by those before him and a team that won more games before him? LD is a puppet, a company man that will do what his bosses want him to do on a whim. Otherwise, can L.D. be that incompetent (Dumb)? Look at his substitutions. LD gives Marvin his minutes, not according to his actual poor game play, but according to his salary on the roster. Josh doesn’t respect him. Teague’s just trying to get along-until his contract is over-then he bolts to another team. If you were a professional basketball player in the NBA-would you want to play for a team that you knew the owners were incompetent SOB’s? No, I don’t think so. The Hawks will be on the bottom as a 6th or 7th seed team-only because the Eastern Conference is so weak. The Hawks would not make the playoffs in the Western Conference-period. Fire LD is the mantra. But do you really think that’ll happen? We’ll know after the end of the season-and the Hawks bow out in the first round-as will be expected. I personally would like to see this team broken up to smithereens. I don’t care if it takes 10 years to make a team from scratch. You have to build a foundation for anything to last. The Hawks foundation is cracked and the team is crumbling under the weight of its own melodrama.

Not sure why everyone is all that shocked about anything having to do with the Hawks. They are a 2nd tier organization at best. The talent level is average. They haven’t had a true center in years. They have a bunch of whiners as players. Who in the heck would want to coach for these players and the prior ownership. Make an example out of Tmac and cut him today. Put up or shut up or get out. Take a lesson from the Knicks and go find a Jeremy Lin. You’re telling me that there is not one power forward out there somewhere that can’t give the Haxks 10 quality minutes with a better tude…C’mon Man!

the one hawk who should be complaining is jannero pargo. larry drew doesn’t a clue as to what to do.he’s pulling a bobby cox.he’s not going with his best, instead, he’s coaching with his heart instead of his head.heart never won any championships but with hawks, it’s not about championships but keeping certain players happy. when kirk hinrich came back, it caused chemistry problems even though he hustles but all of a sudden, pargo stop playing and since, the hawks have gone backward and still gettting worse. the main two problems behind this is rick sund and larry drew.
