Atlanta Hawks: Tracy McGrady fumes over playing time

Portland–Hawks forward Tracy McGrady’s private frustrations over his playing time finally boiled over after he played just 4:39 during the 97-77 loss to the Blazers late Saturday.

“I’m tired of this [bleep],” McGrady said. “You can put that in the paper, I don’t give a [bleep].”

McGrady didn’t play after halftime against the Blazers. He didn’t dress for Atlanta’s 101-99 victory at Phoenix Wednesday but said it was his decision to rest for the second game of a back-to-back. Against the Blazers, McGrady never returned after Marvin Williams replaced him with 7:21 left in the first half.

McGrady has played in 26 of 32 games this season for an average of 18 minutes before Saturday’s game. Last season with Detroit McGrady averaged 23 minutes in 72 games.

McGrady said Hawks coach Larry Drew hasn’t offered him an explanation when he doesn’t play him many minutes.

“If you don’t feel I can help, come tell me that,” McGrady said. “He ain’t told me nothing. I just want to help these guys win, man, which I know I can. But, damn, four minutes?”

McGrady made his comments after Drew’s postgame news conference. Earlier this week Drew, speaking generally about the limited amount of minutes available for his many veteran players, said he thinks it’s important to offer them an explanation when they don’t play much.

McGrady said he’s previously approached Drew about the topic but doesn’t plan on doing so again.

“I have before but I’m only going to do that one time,” McGrady said.

Drew has said he’s mindful of saving McGrady’s body from wear and tear. McGrady was a two-time scoring champion before a series of injuries that includes a herniated disk in his back. He suffered back spasms on Jan. 11 and sat out three games.

McGrady said that when he suits up, that means he’s ready to play.

“My body feels great,” McGrady said. “If it didn’t, I wouldn’t play.”

Under CBA rules, McGrady would be eligible for a trade on March 1. He didn’t go so far as to say he wants out of Atlanta but said he wants to play a bigger role for the Hawks.

“Hopefully, I’m here,” he said. “I like it here. I like the guys. That’s what I love most about it. I like the guys in this locker room. But at the same time, I still can play. No doubt in my mind.”

In fairness, he looked like sh-t in those four minutes, but on the other hand, Vlad didn’t do sh-t either, so it’s questionable at best why Vlad is getting minutes ahead of T-Mac.

That may be true, but Joe Johnson’s MVP run continued tonight.

He continues to own all of us, even me.

Snap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McGrady is not one who will sit quietly and not say “bleep”!!

Also,i think if its not resolved between he and LD that Management will side with da coach and let T-Mac go..
Now to also be fair,i don’t know why t-mac is tripping because he knows he is not good for a long period of PT and he is not consistently healthy enuff to play game after game after game..

He knows he is old..
And LD knows it too!!

I knew it was just a matter of “bleeping” time before he would go off!!

And u can tell him Nunna said so!!

And one more thing:
This tirade coming from a player like a t-mac and with the beating LD took from the TNT crew on Ivans breakout nite, its gonna be hard for LD to get any free agents to come here now..

He will not return as hawk coach next year..They will not offer him a contract..

Andrew,i smell something with that lineup also..
It stank!
I agree that the only real trade value we have is with Al Horford.
Josh can be moved but other coaches who win, like a doc rivers will get jsmooves respect before he lands in boston.

We won tonite but,i still think that this team is 4 players and another head coach away from at least competing in the 2nd round and winning it!

Everyone is tradable.
But i would keep Teague,Horford, and Ivan..
Everybody else can go..Even JSmoove..
The only way i would keep JSmoove is if we brought in a winning coach that he will listen to and trust..

He nor this team listen to Drew..
Drew still has to go and don’t feel sorry for him if he goes..
He’ll end up on 790 as a college basketball analyst or something..
Or,the traffic guy..Larry “Crash” Drew

My post after the Phoenix game..
I knew this was coming

Before Kirk was activated, T-Mac topped 20 minutes in 7 of the 14 games he played.

Since Kirk joined the team, T-Mac has topped 20 minutes in 2 out of the 13 games he has played.

Kirk’s return has eaten into T-Mac’s minutes and Teague’s minutes. Neither T-Mac nor Teague has been as effective since then, and Kirk hasn’t done a whole lot in his minutes either — definitely not much more than what Pargo was doing.

Sund needs to make a move. The rotations were fine the way they were before. Trade Kirk for a big man.

Old or not, TMac (even on a bad night) does more than VRad does.

His play-making ability makes him an asset while he’s on the court. Not sure between him and VRad whose defense is better, but I can see how he is frustrated when people like VRad and MARVIN are playing more than him.

Do I think this will change however, no. As TMac said in his own words “I have before but I’m only going to do that one time.”

Precisely. Kirk’s return has destroyed the Hawks rhythm, Teague’s confidence (if any left), and has pretty much if not completely terminated Pargo’s impact on this team.

Hawks Bench

Perimeter players: Kirk, T-Mac, Pargo, Green, Radmanovic
Big men: Ivan, Dampier, Collins

And you’re already playing a 6′9″ 225 pound guy at power forward who isn’t big enough to contest shots by players of Pau Gasol or LaMarcus Aldridge’s size.

Does Sund really not see a problem here? MAKE A DAMN TRADE

HawkEye

The sooner Kirk is traded the better, but I can’t see how anyone would want him at this current time.

Najeh Davenpoop

Before Al’s injury and Kirk’s return, T-Mac and Zaza used to come off the bench and run the pick and roll pretty nicely. Yes, it is hard to believe, but the Hawks actually used to run pick and rolls this season. I still haven’t seen our heady, savvy, veteran backup point guard Kirk run a working pick and roll with Zaza, but I’ve seen him take at least 8 long 2 point jumpers off the dribble with more than 15 seconds left on the shot clock. Just saying.

Kirk is a good player when healthy, but he is not good enough to f-ck up what was a very effective bench rotation, and he has a LOT more value to this team as an $8 million dollar expiring trade chip than as a player. MAKE A DAMN TRADE.

I mean, sh-t, I wouldn’t even mind this trade.

Lakers get a point guard they need
Bucks clear salary cap space for next year

Leuer’s mom has an explosion in her pants and gets to patronize local clothing stores for a replacement

Everybody wins.

Tonight was a clasic case of hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard! As for JT – he struggledd, but I counted at least 4 wide open Hawks whom should have scored on an assist from JT. ZaZa is the biggest culprit because he is the only one that will follow JT to the basket. Josh acts like he hates JT because he refuses to pass him the ball.

Lastly, if you give the keys to your Lexus to a 15-year old, there are certain things you should expect. I am getting really concerned about these games the Hawks come out and don’t even compete!

Lastly, for the season, JT is 12.5ppg 4.7 ast 2.1 rb and 1.77 steals. Bibby’s last two season were 9.4 ppg and 3.6 ast. JT will get better, but LD has to let the kid play. He also needs to get his rotations down.

Double-edged sword here…

T-Mac sits himself vs. Suns, obviously not feeling well…
Dresses vs. Blazers, feeling better Lewis?…
Now, when he sits himself is he pouting or recouperating?…

If I’m LD, I don’t know from one day to next if he’s ready…

If I’m T-Mac, you knew when you signed me what u were getting…

As a former player, I’m siding w/ T-Mac on this one…
He’s the best player on the team..4min?…that’s BS!…

T-Mac/Willie Green should be playing 20+mpg…if not starting

Let him get his groove on…we should by now what we have

Trade deadline will resolve some P/T issues, pro’s stay quiet and ready…

The problem with making a trade is that Smoove is our only trade asset, and trading him would instantly put this franchise in rebuilding mode for anywhere from 5-10 years. You will recall that I advocated playing Kirk and Marvin so that they could establish trade value and be moved by the trade deadline. Well, we’ve seen enough of both of them. Last year’s Orlando series may be the last time Kirk ever substantially contributes to an NBA team’s success. Marvin is Marvin. We played them, they played like hell and nobody else wants them.

Najeh Davenpoop

Not to mention that trade would get the Hawks comfortably under the luxury tax line and allow them to pursue free agent scrub big men like Kyrylo Fesenko in peace without having to worry about whether they will get their precious rebate checks at the end of the season.

We may as well trade Kirk to the Lakers for a trade exception that will never be used.

I would have let Josh finish the game to get his triple double. Marvin needs to come off the bench. We need some length off the bench to help us board.

I watched the Wizzards beat the Blazers at home. They did it with a lot of energy plays. The Hawks do not come out with that kind of energy every game, why? Also I love Batum. He is a really good young player. Drafted with the 25th pick by Houston and I guess traded to Portland. I know the Hawks picked up JT that season, but I would trade hime for Marvin EVERY day of the week!

Mcgrady is right to complain. Why is marvin even playing, check out his stats the last ten games.

Mcgrady sees the floor pretty damn well. Him and zaza had a nice routine earlier this season when tmac got pt.

I guess ld actually did some coaching in the first quarter because we didnt see that ugly iso joe crud. He looked good cutting to the basket, truth be told he wasnt facing much defense at that point.

X3,4…. About hinrich. I dont mind seeing him go, but what team will eat that contract… Hawks will have to take some of it. Not as easy as snapping your fingers and trading him for a useful big.

Najeh Davenpoop

February 19th, 2012

There are 48 minutes to be played at the PF position and C position, totaling 96 minutes.

Josh played 41 minutes
Zaza played 28
Ivan played 4

That adds up to 73.

That means the Hawks were trying to get by with perimeter players (mostly Vlad) for 23 minutes at one or both of the big man positions. Not to mention, Josh has the body of a swingman to begin with.

And LD wonders why they are getting doubled up on the boards?

Get Ivan and Dampier some damn minutes, and trade Kirk for someone better than Ivan and Dampier so that LD has no excuse but to play someone who can guard big men and rebound.

Vlad put up a whopping 1 point and 1 rebound in those 23 minutes, just for the record. Ivan could have done better than that on both ends.

LD is off & running ddoing stupid things again messing with players minds.a coupe of blogs ago I said LT wasn’t giving TMac playing time,so TMac said screw you I can’t play tomorrow,my back hurts, screw you.sautee askedvwhere I was getting this accusing me of starting false rumors.I said that would make perfect sense as TMac was pissed,he came here to play.well I certainly was right screw around with people ,like JT see where game goes .TMac says I’m fine yesterday LD says he can’t play back to back games even when he gave him limited time. TMac still has a lot of talent. I knew He was in LD ’s doghouse just like JT & probably ivans this man lies & is disrupting this team.

For the one time that it needs to be said, Leuer sux and isn’t going to help this team. But Sund probably has an eye on this talent.

And would it surprise anyone if Sund ended up signing Kirk to a MY deal before he can get to free agency?

Our ineptness continues with another loss to a team that is not a contender in the West. And Joe starting to have knee issues should concern the rest of us that Josh now will have the offense go through him even more.

Ger ready for more struggles just ahead.

Where are those Marvin supporters? Someone tell him it’s okay to start being more involved while he’s on the court. 10/2 isn’t getting it done in 24 min. And JT my man, we need you to be ready every night.

Heck, size wise he is no better than Kito. Maybe he “plays” bigger or has better overall skill (or maybe he just comes from a bigger program), but I don’t see it, esp. looking at his PT. If we get Benson back, all we give up is $$$ for his salary. Heinrich may prove valuable come playoffs, so I wouldn’t be too quick to trade him.

I agree with Adam.
Joe owns us.
I agreed with the Boston ex-owner that the first contract was a mistake.
To redo the same bad deal for another five years was just beyond dumb.
There is no way we can add enough other pieces with that deal in place.
Pretty pathetic when management failed math.
