Atlanta Hawks at Blazers: Game thread
10:02 pm February 18, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Portland–Hawks center Jason Collins (elbow) got bad news from his recent checkup: “Another two to four more weeks. They showed me the MRI on the screen and the severity of the tear and highly recommended I stay in this brace so I can get back to the court as quickly as possible.”
- Collins will wear the brace around the clock and won’t be able to do any rehab until it comes off. “We started testing how the scar tissue is, the joint is still loose and cracking so there’s no scar tissue yet,” he said. “Got to give it more time to heal.”
- Erick Dampier’s 10-day contract is up after tonight’s game. Larry Drew said the team hasn’t decided if it will sign Dampier to another 10-day, add him for the rest of the season or seek a different free agent. “Rick Sund is here and we’ll visit after the game,” Drew said.
- Joe Johnson is wearing a soft brace on his problematic left knee. Johnson, as is his nature, shrugged it off: “It’s no big deal. Tendenitis flared up on it, but we’ve got to go up with what we’ve got. I’ve got tendinitis real bad right here [around patellar tendon]. Its’ tough at times but I had a couple days of rest so I should be all right.”
- In the eight games since scoring 30 points to lift Atlanta to the W at Toronto, Johnson averaged 13.8 points and shot 38 percent from the field. He scored a season-low six points and missed eight of 10 shots at Phoenix.
- Drew: “The last game I thought he was a little tired. His shots were a little short. When that happens, usually it’s the legs. When the physical fatigue sets in, usually the mental fatigue is not far behind. Hopefully those days off will help. We didn’t do much yesterday. He was moving very well yesterday so hopefully he had a chance to get some rest.”
- Johnson is playing 36 minutes per game after averaging 35.5 last season. Both are lows for his time in Atlanta but of obviously the minutes this year are exacerbated by the busy schedule.
- Drew on Josh Smith: “It’s kind of weird because he’s one of those guys when he gets it going, I do run plays for him, but he’s come to me and said, ‘Don’t run plays for me, just get everybody else going and I will try to find my own offense.’”
- LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle) is starting for the Blazers.

Unselfishness is always good, but in Josh’s case “finding his own offense” usually means standing 20 feet away from the basket waiting for someone else to hit him for a jumper. I’d rather see them run plays for him in the post.
Blazers have lost a ton of home games in a row, and they get LaMarcus Aldridge back. I had this game down as a win before the month started, but I don’t have a great feeling about this one. Blazers by 7.

I saw some were asking about the Gearon meeting with season ticket holders. I was there. Here are some highlights:
–He pointed out that the free agent signing of Joe Johnson was one of the best free agent signings in a number of years. He gave a few examples of “big signings” that have been busts (Brand in Philly, Boozer in Chicago).
–He thinks there is a shot Al comes back by the Playoffs. Said it is tough to judge team, since whole group has not been together.
–Said he thinks Hawks can still “breakthrough” and make Eastern Finals and NBA Finals. Sited ‘04 Pistons as a team that was like the Hawks (no superstars).
–Talked about how teams have to consider impact on team when they sign a free agent. Gave example of ‘89 Hawks. They came off 7 game series with Celtics and signed Moses Molne and Reggie Theis. On paper, should of had a better team. But, Malone tied up paint, forcing ‘Nique to perimeter and Thies was an iso player that slowed the offense. Team was actually better the year before. Thinks Knicks are going through similar experience now.
–Said this is the best team, 1-12, the Hawks have had in his ownership time.
–Said he thinks Joe gets so little attention because he is so quiet. Pointed out Joe hitting the big 3 against Detroit and barely celebrated.
–Was asked why ASG tried to sell team. Gearon said that he is glad deal fell through. Said that he had hard time dealing with losing Thrashers and going away for Summer recharged him. Plus, new CBA changes thing for ownership in a good way.
–I gave him props for getting on the ref when Teague got hammered against Paceds. He said that you have to be careful getting on refs. If you yell all the time, they will start working against you. But, he wants Teague to start getting calls, since he goes so hard to the rim.
–Someone asked why Hawks only draft 6′9 guys. Gearon said that he thought Jeff Teague was 6′2.
–Talked about how he preaches to young players to save there money.
–Said only time he ever rooted against Hawks was when ‘Nique came back as a Clipper for the first time.
That’s all I remember right now. Gearon is a very likable guy. This is the 2nd time he has spoken with us. I think he is a good guy.

I am also a good guy, but it doesn’t mean I’d make a good NBA owner.
The score says the Blazers dominated that quarter, but I just saw a bunch of Blazers hitting tough shots. At some point in the game those tough shots are not going to fall. The Hawks’ defense wasn’t really that bad, at least in the half court, although their transition D wasn’t very good. Crash the boards, slow down the tempo, and share the ball on offense and I think the Hawks can climb back into this.

YOu’re right Najeh, the transition D sucked… which is why Teague got yanked sooner than normal. If Joe hits that floater, the Hawks might be going into the locker room down 11. Instead, they are down 15.
Portland stopped hitting a lot of those tough shots they were getting in the first quarter, but they made up for it by continuing to hit the glass and creating hustle plays. I have a feeling LD will use the word “energy” in the post game press conference.

Najeh,
At first, I thought it was a clean block too. But on the replay, Jeff got him on the arm. But Nique is such a homer, he swore it was clean even after the replay.
I dont know what Nique brings to the broadcast. I wish they would give it to Stinger or Duane who did the magic game.
Meanwhile, Hawks gave up 10 offensive rebounds in the first half. And are outrebounded 26-14.
I wonder if we will see dampier tonight.

My favorite thing bout Drew is that he won’t change anything about his lineup or minutes or lineup combos, regardless of how bad the beatdown is. I understand that the rebounding issue is tough considering the injuries, but isn’t that why head coaches are head coaches, so they can make strategic adjustments based on extenuating circumstances? He hasn’t come up with anything creative AT ALL to compensate for the lack of big boys, the inability to score or run the break, or to get dumba$$es out of the game for shooting outside their range.

I mean, the Blazers have been running this zone on us all night, but has LD made any strategic adjustment? Does he adjust the lineup to get some shooters out there?
We’re getting killed on the boards, but does he get the scariest guy in the NBA out there to help out?
Marvin’s getting abused out there, but does Drew sit him?
Teague has played 25 minues, shooting 1-7, with 3 assists, no rebounds, and no steals, but Hinrich has played only 6 minutes and Pargo is a DNP-coach decision.

“he’s one of the worst starting PGs with regard to finishing at the rim, check his stats”
According to the stats MC posted on the previous blog, he’s in the middle of the pack.
“can’t get the offense in rhythm, and can’t run the offense.”
I never said he doesn’t have room for improvement in these areas, but he does both of these better than anyone else on this team, and yes that includes Kirk. He is the Hawks’ best option at the point right now.
As far as him supposedly not producing vs. good teams… 15-5 with 4 steals against Miami in a win, 20-10 with 6 steals against Minnesota (a .500 team) in a win, 12-6 with 5 steals against Philly in a loss, 12-8 with 5 steals against Chicago in a blowout win, etc. He has plenty of room for improvement, but he’s been fine this year, and since Al went down he’s clearly been one of the team’s best players.

Najeh, Teague has been “fine” in those few games you chose (didn’t realize playing well against Rubio, Chalmers, Holiday meant so much… and Radmonovic dropped 17 on the Bulls in that game, so pretty much everyone played well against Chi… and for every good game you show me I can show you 2 or 3 where he basically sucked… check out his line tonight), but you’re doggin’ on Kirk like he’s not even in the same category with the “great” Teague.

“didn’t realize playing well against Rubio, Chalmers, Holiday meant so much”
You’re changing the argument around. First it was “he doesn’t play well against good teams”, and now that I show you several games where he plays well against good teams (those weren’t the only ones by the way), you point out the players he went against. Holiday is one of the best point guard defenders in the league, just for the record, and Teague played well in both games against Philly.
“Radmonovic dropped 17 on the Bulls in that game, so pretty much everyone played well against Chi”
What does this have to do with anything? If anything, doesn’t that show that the offense was running well with Teague at point guard?
“and for every good game you show me I can show you 2 or 3 where he basically sucked”
I can do this for Joe and Josh too, doesn’t mean they are not the best options on this team at their positions.
“you’re doggin’ on Kirk like he’s not even in the same category with the “great” Teague.”
I’m not dogging him at all, just saying he’s not the best point guard on this team. He’s a good backup.

Anyway, I have no problem admitting that Teague played like sh-t tonight and went Marvin on several shots that he should have made. I just refuse to agree that this has any meaning beyond being one bad game. He’s still the 3rd best active player on this team and the best option at the point guard position.
Bottom line is he is the only player on this team who can consistently break down a defense, and that makes his presence on the court valuable even when he’s not playing at his best. Kind of like how Josh is the only interior help defender on this team, making his presence on the court valuable even when he’s not playing at his best. You can blame Sund for not acquiring more depth on this roster, but it is what it is.

Maybe if the Hawks had traded Jamal at the deadline last year for T-Mac, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace and a pick (like I wanted them to do), they could have used the pick on another help defender or dribble penetrator, making the presence of Teague or Josh on the floor less vital. Maybe if the Hawks had simply cut Bibby instead of packaging a first rounder AND Jordan Crawford for Kirk, they could have used that pick or made a less costly trade to get a help defender or dribble penetrator to make Teague or Josh’s presence on the floor less vital.
But they have mismanaged their assets for several years, which is why they only have one interior help defender, one dribble penetrator, one go-to scorer, etc. when other teams have multiple players who can do those things. And until they find a way to manage their assets better and improve their depth, they are going to have to roll with Teague, Josh, and Joe even when those players are not playing well.

I hate to watch this team because this coach does not have a clue what he is doing. Why couldn’t he have gave Pargo a try when both Teague and Hinrich were struggling? Why not play a front court of Josh, Ivan, Zaza? What happened to Dampier, isn’t that a guy they sign to a 10 day contract to help them out in the middle.

I didn’t watch or follow the game, but I believe the Hawks need a legitimate second scoring option. Smith is not it and it’s too unreasonable to ask Johnson to create his own shot under pressure time after time, game after game. I believe the Hawks should pursue Stephen Jackson (by trading Marvin Williams) and just dedicate the next year and a half to that CORE. By that time, Jackson and Josh Smith’s contracts will be expiring and you can use amnesty on Joe Johnson if that choice is wild. Mostly though, this year needs to be salvaged before things begin to seriously unravel. Get Jackson now before Drew loses the team emotionally.

10+ rebounds usually spells defeat, especially when you’re missing shots. Don’t know why the Hawks don’t run more pick-n-rolls.
Is it possible to be dumber than L.D.? Why can’t Pargo see any meaningful minutes with Teague struggling and Kirk non-existent? This coach is getting worst and as a result, the Hawks are too.

The play unintelligent basketball. Teague has to get the ball from Josh when bringing the ball down more often. Josh causes more turnovers every game when trying to bring the ball down. For all the good that Josh does it’s. Canceled out by making bad decisions that lead to missed points for the Hawks, but points for opposing teams. This team hasn’t crashed board since KEVIN WILLIS and MOSES
