Atlanta Hawks at Suns: Game thread

Phoenix–Tracy McGrady did not dress. “We are just going to rest him up,” Larry Drew said. “This is one of the things we knew we were probably going to be doing given the [truncated] season. He will be resting on back-to-back, whether the first night or second.”

  • All 13 Suns are dressed and available.
  • Jason Collins (elbow) saw his doctor today. “From what I was told, it’s feeling better but it’s not completely healed,” Drew said. “It’s going to be a little bit longer.”
  • Drew didn’t commit to another 10-day contract for Erick Dampier. “It’s a possibility given that Jason won’t be back soon,” Drew said. “We are certainly going to need the body.”
  • Drew expects to use Dampier tonight against Marcin Gortat and Robin Lopez after he played 16 minutes against Andrew Bynum. “Watching ‘Damp,’ it seems like every day he’s getting into some playing shape,” Drew said.
  • The Suns sliced the Hawks on pick-and-rolls in the last meeting. According to Synergy Sports Technology, Suns pick-and-roll ball-handlers scored 1.5 points per possession and roll men scored 1.14 points per possession. On their 21 pick-and-roll possessions used, the Suns combined for 12 of 19 shooting, including 3-for-4 on 3s.
  • “We are going to see tons and tons of it,” Drew said. “They run multiple pick-and-rolls. They run a lot of random pick-and-rolls. We are just going to have to do a good job against it. It’s not something we haven’t had seen before. The guards are going to have to do a good job of fighting over it and everybody is going to have to be in position.”
  • The league selected Joe Johnson to participate in the 3-point shootout during All-Star weekend. “I guess they needed a fill-in,” Joe joked.
  • Joe finished fifth of six players in 2005 when he repped the Suns. “I’ve always wanted a chance to redeem myself,” Joe said. That field included Hawks teammate Vladimir Radmaonovic, champion Quentin Richardson, Kyle Korver, Voshon Leonard and Ray Allen.
  • Johnson and Minnesota’s Kevin Love are the two All-Stars who also will participate in the 3-point shootout this year. The other contestants are defending champion James Jones of the Heat, Miami teammate Mario Chalmers, Orlando’s Ryan Anderson and New Jersey’s Anthony Morrow.

I predicted 8-5 for this month and 5-3 up to this point. So far they are 3-5 — the two games they lost that I thought they would win were the Philly game and the Phoenix game. If they are going to prove me right they have to win out the rest of the month, starting tonight.

I’ll stand by my prediction. Hawks bounce back and win by 4 tonight.

“Don’t I see you once in a while over on O’Brien’s blog with the BRAVES? Come more often. This might be a coming out year for them after that train-wreck of a September they had last season.”

Not that often. I don’t know as much about baseball and don’t watch it as much as I watch football and basketball. They took a page out of the Rick Sund playbook this offseason, though, sitting on their hands after that collapse and hoping things get better. I hope it works out, but I have a better feeling about Aggressive Frank Wren than Passive Frank Wren.

richbrave, Hawks lost their All-Star center for the vast majority of the regular season… yet this blog goes ballistic when the Hawks lose to the Heat. If the Wizards beat us at home, it would ignite a digital riot.

For those paranoid bloggers, LD will likely sub Teague and Marvin somewhere between 3:00 and 4:00 minutes left in the 1st quarter, regardless of the game situation. Don’t take it personally, the head coach seems to believe that the guy needs to rest during actual game time and not just in between quarters.

I would have liked to see TMac and Marvin play toether tonight with Marvin responsible for chasing Frye on the perimeter. Let’s hope Josh doesn’t lose him like he did in Atlanta.

I truly don’t like the idea of Joe in the 3-contest… here’s hoping that he stops using games to practice his 3-balll. Although according to some, game time is the only way to develop your skills.

AJ:

Yeah they did that in 1994 too, and things worked out. Personally, I don’t think the new SS has had enough AAA experience, and their fall-back plan [JACK WILSON] is fine defensively, but non-existant with a bat in his hands. Still, A-GON had 15 jacks last season, and I think 10 of them were solo blasts, so maybe there’ll be a boat-load of runners on with the 8 hole coming up, and JACK can manage a single to plate one. GONZALEZ was an automatic out with runners aboard last season. Really bad. I guess the BRAVES think the rook and the light-hitting vet couldn’t do much worse.

I would say they are embarrassing the city of Atlanta, but after 50 plus years of embarrassing sports teams from all major sports teams in Atlanta, a 10-game stretch of embarrassing play is really standard, and the embarrassment can always be worse with Atlanta teams (Braves 2011 collapse, Falcons collapse at Giant Stadium 2011, and that is just THIS year.) This group is a very gifted group but DUMB. Every game they will find different ways to lose a game. Also, when things start going wrong, they start shooting jumpers and when the jumpers stop falling, they start crying and flailing and throwing their hands up, while the so called leader JJ runs to the bench and hides under a towel.

It also doesn’t help (Melvin), that 67% of his FGAs have been from 3. One of the reason’s I stated that I HATE that he is in the 3-ball contest. I think that contest affects shooters much like the home run contest usually fouls up hitters.

On the positive side, he’s taken as many FGAs as Zaza, so he (again) isn’t hoisting shots just for the sake of hoisting shots.

I refuse to blame the players, because their talent is the only thing that gets them in the playoffs. If they actually had a competent coach, who knew how to demand respect and run the offense, they would of been in the ECF years ago. They are playing with heart; they are just playing undisciplined, which makes us think they are not trying. Yet, one thing I can say with confidence, is that they are giving their all. If the Hawks want to make a trade with Phoenix involving Marvin, they would almost certainly insist that the Hawks take Childress in return. That may actually work in the Hawks’ favor.

But you can safely give up on getting Gortat without giving up Josh or Al. I don’t think Gortat is as good as his stats, but his trade value is going to be high enough for Phoenix to demand Josh or Al in return.

Do you blame the child for their incompetence and bad habits, or the parents? The coach is in charge of enforcing discipline, creating offensive/defensive schemes, and taking advantage of mismatches. Watching this team makes me feel claustrophobic, “as in getting crammed in a crawlspace with a high floor and a low ceiling” claustrophobic. There’s no room for optimism whatsoever– at least when we were 13-69 we had the lottery to look forward to. Now we’re left with a bunch of indifferent underachievers who are in all likelihood as sick of each other as we are of them.

I could stand to get rid of everyone except: Jeff (cancerous environment for anyone to develop a career; he has serious potential), Hinrich (has proved his worth in this league- time is running out though), Zaza and Ivan (while neither are remotely skilled players, they always put forth the requisite effort). And I like a lot of the bench guys, but that’s what they are. Bench guys. And old ones at that.

“The only anger issue I’ve ever really had is with anyone who doesn’t want to win as much as I do.” -Ivan (how has he not murdered Joe?)

Do not know if the financials work or not but would a deal be workable:

Nash and Gortat to Hawks

Teague and Josh to Suns

Suns are not making playoffs and would be getting younger. We would get a point guard who can run an offense and our assists would go up. Gortat and Nash can still run their pick and pop game with Joe and Green being your perimeter shooters (what Phoenix lacks). Horford moves to Power Forward when he gets back.

Yeah, we get older but we get a true C who I think would love to go up against Howard four times a year or more though I like Josh alot (yeah, I do), Phoenix seems to covet him and feel that in the end, for the team to progress, it would be without him.

The HAWKS definitely need to try something different with the pick-and-roll defensive. Probably trap and make Nash give up the ball. I know that will give up 3’s but we’re still giving up 3’s. If they don’t trap then they should go under the screens.

Melvin, I believe the other team has a bigger influence on Joe having a bad game than they do on Josh and Jeff.

Najeh Davenpoop

February 15th, 2012

The Suns would do Teague and Josh for Nash and Gortat. Problem is, when Nash retires in a year or two, the Hawks will be left with no point guard, a much less effective Gortat without Nash around, and Joe and Al. If that’s worth possibly improving a little for the remainder of this season and maybe next season, that’s a trade that can be made. I doubt that the offensive improvement provided by that trade to the Hawks would offset the defensive dropoff though. The Hawks would probably be last in the league in forcing turnovers after making that trade.

Josh continues to shoot something like 28% from 18+ feet but keeps firing away cuz there’s no penalty for him for doing so. It’s gotta be tough for Drew to pull him given how much Josh impacts the game in other ways… but something has to be done about those shots.

To FACT:, ‘Ra’mon has a crush on Josh’.

Its actually quite the contrary. I would trade Josh for a few players in the league, but none who are not in the All Star game, and none who are past their prime.

I just think Josh and Joe are under appreciated on this blog. People get mad at Joe because of his contract. But I’ve yet to see the NBA player who signed themselves. I’ve never played in the NBA, but if Gearon came and offered me a $124 million contract, I’d be out their on the plane tomorrow. The fact remains Joe is still the 3rd best SG in the game now. Sund is a terrible GM. LD can’t coach. Yet the Hawks keep making it to the 2nd round. It has to be because Joe and Josh are better than people say they are. People get mad because Joe goes and scores 15 points against a team that is doubling him the entire game. But if I recall Boston did the same thing to the great Lebron and Kobe, until they got more help.

Do you guys notice we still haven’t seen the Hawks play with a legit starting lineup. Marvin has always been there. And Bibby was at the PG spot. Now when Teague is starting, Al goes down to make way for Zaza in the starting line up. So for the past 3-4 seasons we’ve basically seen the Hawks play 3 on 5 majority of the time. Get on management to get the team a LEGIT starting lineup. And then see what Josh and Joe can do.

8 huge points for Josh — probably should have been more if he got a foul call — to close out that quarter.

He does some things that drive a coach crazy, but the bottom line remains that he’s one of the two best players on this team. “A virtual miracle that Hawks cut the lead to 4 without Teague on the floor. LD needs to play Jeff for the rest of the game since that lightening surely won’t strike again.”

Seeing as how they cut it to 4 thanks to two Josh 3s and a Josh putback off a bricked jumper, I’d say you are right. Can’t rely on Josh jumpers and putbacks to carry your offense.

Willie should play the rest of the second half, excepting a lil rest here or there. One of my big complaints bout Drew is that he doesn’t normally stick with bench guys when they’re playing well. This would be a great time to go small with Joe at SF and Jeff/Kirk alongside Willie. But that would entail some creativity from Drew… and we all know better than that.

The Hawks’ offense has stayed afloat during this Teague stretch on the bench because Josh has scored 10 points pretty much on his own. 2 3s, a putback layup and a post up hook. The fact hasn’t changed that the Hawks’ offense is jumpshot central when Teague is on the bench. Joe Johnson another “no show.” Imagine what we could have gotten if we had let him walk and actually use an IQ on all of that money that he got.

Joe Johnson just always looks ticked off. He acts lackluster, shows zero emotion (rare, rare, rare), and isn’t a bonafide leader, in essence. He fades out in the big games and dominates the Bobcats and Wizards. I’d like to see some emotion, for once!

Once again, Josh’s passing out of the post gets the Hawks an open shot.

To be clear, I have made some negative comments about Kirk over the last few quarters, but the point isn’t to decry LD’s decision to stick with him. I don’t mind sticking with something while it is working. I’m just saying that attempting to attribute this 2nd half run to his presence on the floor is foolish. He has hit one mid-range jumper and has deflected a couple of passes, but other than that, his role has been to give Josh the ball and get out of the way.

This is all Josh and 3-point shooting.

That last possession failed directly because of no dribble penetration, and on the other end Kirk gets burned by Nash in transition.

Grandmaster JeJe, EXACTLY. I have been saying that all along, but anyone with an IQ could figure out that Joe is a no-show during the big-time games. I can see why people were criticizing him for another All-Star selection. Not only is Joe not fit for a bonafide “leader,” he shows NO EMOTION and ALWAYS acts like he’s ticked off at the world before the game, during the game, and post-game. I think I’ve seen Joe smile ONCE or twice since he’s been with the Hawks. At least show SOMETHING. His lackluster play is why he isn’t a “superstar” that Dominique ALWAYS refers to him as. I don’t care about Joe’s emotion, but it’s pretty clear at this point that Josh does a better job finding open teammates than Joe does when he is double teamed.

Joe is a scorer, and the goal needs to be to get him opportunities to catch and shoot or catch and drive for a floater or layup. Any possession where he is asked to create shots for himself or others from the perimeter is a wasted possession when Josh could do the same out of the post.

HawkEye and Grandmaster are right on it about changing the way Joe is used. There’s no reason at all to not run him off multiple screens like Indy used to do with Reggie Miller. This is especially true this season because Joe’s just not gonna have the legs to consistently beat guys one-on-one all night every night. It’s be much easier for him to weave through lane traffic for easy catch-and-shoot scoring opportunities.

The Miami Heat need a center and Chris Kaman sure would fit the bill. It won’t be easy for that to happen. But the Heat are trying. Heat officials, including president Pat Riley, have been calling people who know Kaman to ask about him, a source told FOXSports.com on Wednesday. FoxSports

The thinking is the Heat’s best effort to get a center would be to sign Kaman — if his contract is bought out by New Orleans after the March 15 trade deadline. The Hornets recently sent Kaman away from the team for seven games in an effort to trade him. When that was unsuccessful, he was brought back. FoxSports

There’s no way in Hades that Willie should start over Teague or Joe. Can’t really have Joe guarding SFs every night cuz it’ll just wear on him too much and negatively impact his offense. Besides that, a guy like Willie coming off the bench is akin to a poor man’s Jamal Crawford. So let’s not get carried away.

If not, then what the hella is Sund doing? Kaman would be a player worth paying some LT for.

Good question. I would think so, especially if he’s talking to Kaman’s reps, but in this new NBA where the commissioner vetoes trades who knows what’s legal and what’s not.

I agree with Najeh. Joe needs to look to score more then create. Maybe if Teague handled the ball more, we could see this happen.

Well, a win is a win anyway you slice it.

Portland isn’t anywhere near the same team without Aldridge. A lot of dribble penetration but no post presence, no go-to scoring option, and inconsistent outside shooting. The Hawks can only hope Aldridge sits out through the weekend. They can definitely beat Portland without him.

Drew hopefully will get a lucrative offer after this season from the Wizards. Josh on the post produces when you call the play. And when you have him on the elbow he will shoot.

Giving it to Joe when he’s on the rag nearly lost this game like the Orlando game in the last 2 minutes. The sooner we move from the JJ era as no. 1 iso plank is when this team can advance further in the playoffs.

Trail Blazers out-battle the Warriors 93-91. Jamal Crawford hits a big, clutch 3 [pointer] late in the 4th quarter to put Portland up by one point and later makes to clutch free throws to give the Blazers a two-point lead which in the end was the winning margin.

T-Mac showing his health/age, but hey, we didn’t bring him in to be a starter or play starter’s minutes….no matter how bad we need somebody to take minutes from that guy who starts at SF but shouldn’t ….

I said it once and I’ll say it again. TMAC didn’t come to ATL to start. That’s why he was rested today.

And I see that Jamal used up one of the two clutch shots a year that he makes. That three he took with 10 seconds still on the shot clock was a horrific shot. But he made it. That’s all that counts.

“Now, why don’t we move JJ to SF?”

The major problem with this is rebounding. With the Hawks already a little undersized and thin at PF and C, they need rebounding out of the SF position. For all of Marvin’s other faults, he has consistently done a good job on the boards this season. Joe, on the other hand, not so much.

So in order to beat this under 500 team, we needed key Josh Smith 3 pt field goals, a costly technical foul by the opponent, and wide open misses from them as well???
Honestly, How can you be happy with this win? Is this what we can depend on in the playoffs or against good teams? That dependable Josh Smith 3 point stroke?? Guys for the other team missing wide open shots?? The other team’s superstar getting a costly tech at a crucial point in a game??? Nothing good came of this game from a standpoint of being comfortable with how we will fair in the playoffs. It actually confirms the doubts.

Josh Smith is clearly the most underappreciated player in the NBA. Somehow, his terrific energy (that drives the entire team), emotion and will to win seem to be totally misunderstood. Have any of you doubters actually watched him play? If you haven’t noticed, he can do it all – score, rebound, block, steal, assist – not to mention all the shots he “changes” by his awesome defense. And he cares!!! If you would take the time to look at him, you would see the obvious. Joe an allstar? HA!
On another note, Drew really lucked out tonight in Phoenix, because in spite on Josh’s great, great effort, we almost lost this game. It sure was cute watching Kurt chasing Steve around the court.
Stop taking so many minutes away from Teague – Kurt’s good for a few and then the age shows – he is clearly not Steve Nash. And remember, for all practical purposes, this is really Teague’s rookie year, as he has been screwed over in playing time the last time. He is doing a heck of a job!!
Give him some confidence, Larry!!!!
