Atlanta Hawks at Suns: Game thread
9:05 pm February 15, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Phoenix–Tracy McGrady did not dress. “We are just going to rest him up,” Larry Drew said. “This is one of the things we knew we were probably going to be doing given the [truncated] season. He will be resting on back-to-back, whether the first night or second.”
- All 13 Suns are dressed and available.
- Jason Collins (elbow) saw his doctor today. “From what I was told, it’s feeling better but it’s not completely healed,” Drew said. “It’s going to be a little bit longer.”
- Drew didn’t commit to another 10-day contract for Erick Dampier. “It’s a possibility given that Jason won’t be back soon,” Drew said. “We are certainly going to need the body.”
- Drew expects to use Dampier tonight against Marcin Gortat and Robin Lopez after he played 16 minutes against Andrew Bynum. “Watching ‘Damp,’ it seems like every day he’s getting into some playing shape,” Drew said.
- The Suns sliced the Hawks on pick-and-rolls in the last meeting. According to Synergy Sports Technology, Suns pick-and-roll ball-handlers scored 1.5 points per possession and roll men scored 1.14 points per possession. On their 21 pick-and-roll possessions used, the Suns combined for 12 of 19 shooting, including 3-for-4 on 3s.
- “We are going to see tons and tons of it,” Drew said. “They run multiple pick-and-rolls. They run a lot of random pick-and-rolls. We are just going to have to do a good job against it. It’s not something we haven’t had seen before. The guards are going to have to do a good job of fighting over it and everybody is going to have to be in position.”
- The league selected Joe Johnson to participate in the 3-point shootout during All-Star weekend. “I guess they needed a fill-in,” Joe joked.
- Joe finished fifth of six players in 2005 when he repped the Suns. “I’ve always wanted a chance to redeem myself,” Joe said. That field included Hawks teammate Vladimir Radmaonovic, champion Quentin Richardson, Kyle Korver, Voshon Leonard and Ray Allen.
- Johnson and Minnesota’s Kevin Love are the two All-Stars who also will participate in the 3-point shootout this year. The other contestants are defending champion James Jones of the Heat, Miami teammate Mario Chalmers, Orlando’s Ryan Anderson and New Jersey’s Anthony Morrow.

Johnson, Smith and Williams all need to go. No movement at all on offense. Sometimes they just look clueless. Start this team over. Wishful thinking.

I sincerely believe that if Al Horford was healthy this whole season, we’d still have the exact same record and would have lost the same games.

The Suns’ domination of the boards hasn’t even hurt the Hawks that much. Both teams have basically the same number of shot attempts and free throw attempts. The Suns have just gotten quality shots and hit them, while the Hawks other than Teague have gotten bad shots and missed them.

This is truly sad…its like watching a JV team take on an NBA all-star team. I probably wont watch anymore games after tonight. I would say they are embarrassing the city of Atlanta, but after 50 plus years of embarrassing sports teams from all major sports teams in Atlanta, a 10-game stretch of embarrassing play is really standard, and the embarrassment can always be worse with Atlanta teams (Braves 2011 collapse, Falcons collapse at Giant Stadium 2011, and that is just THIS year.) The worst fundamental team in NBA without question- cant shoot, no ball movement, dont move feet on defense, dont help each other, blow 3 on 1 breakaways…this team is beyond pathetic. Can Larry Drew coach a middle school team at his ineptness?

Also, once again, the lack of a perimeter defender on the second unit reared its ugly head in that quarter. Damien Wilkins wouldn’t have let Redd post him up and get and-1s.

it is just pathetic if we cant get past 85 pts playing against the phoenix suns. kirk is still a good defender but he cant seem to get in a good flow anymore offensively with his shot.
whats our problem(excuse) tonight? energy? settling for jumpshots?

“Not having Horford is finally catching up, bash him as you may but he’s needed on the floor.”
No. We have had the same core for 4-5 years and go through the same ish every year.
We start fast vs. awful teams and then we get owned by good teams. Maybe you are new to following this team. Otherwise, my prior statement is correct. This is a team of losers and a front office that doesn’t care about winning

I am pretty sure every Hawks point scored since Kirk came in the game has come in transition as a result of fast breaks. Can’t recall a single half court basket scored by the Hawks since Teague left.
