Atlanta Hawks at Suns: Game thread
9:05 pm February 15, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
Phoenix–Tracy McGrady did not dress. “We are just going to rest him up,” Larry Drew said. “This is one of the things we knew we were probably going to be doing given the [truncated] season. He will be resting on back-to-back, whether the first night or second.”
- All 13 Suns are dressed and available.
- Jason Collins (elbow) saw his doctor today. “From what I was told, it’s feeling better but it’s not completely healed,” Drew said. “It’s going to be a little bit longer.”
- Drew didn’t commit to another 10-day contract for Erick Dampier. “It’s a possibility given that Jason won’t be back soon,” Drew said. “We are certainly going to need the body.”
- Drew expects to use Dampier tonight against Marcin Gortat and Robin Lopez after he played 16 minutes against Andrew Bynum. “Watching ‘Damp,’ it seems like every day he’s getting into some playing shape,” Drew said.
- The Suns sliced the Hawks on pick-and-rolls in the last meeting. According to Synergy Sports Technology, Suns pick-and-roll ball-handlers scored 1.5 points per possession and roll men scored 1.14 points per possession. On their 21 pick-and-roll possessions used, the Suns combined for 12 of 19 shooting, including 3-for-4 on 3s.
- “We are going to see tons and tons of it,” Drew said. “They run multiple pick-and-rolls. They run a lot of random pick-and-rolls. We are just going to have to do a good job against it. It’s not something we haven’t had seen before. The guards are going to have to do a good job of fighting over it and everybody is going to have to be in position.”
- The league selected Joe Johnson to participate in the 3-point shootout during All-Star weekend. “I guess they needed a fill-in,” Joe joked.
- Joe finished fifth of six players in 2005 when he repped the Suns. “I’ve always wanted a chance to redeem myself,” Joe said. That field included Hawks teammate Vladimir Radmaonovic, champion Quentin Richardson, Kyle Korver, Voshon Leonard and Ray Allen.
- Johnson and Minnesota’s Kevin Love are the two All-Stars who also will participate in the 3-point shootout this year. The other contestants are defending champion James Jones of the Heat, Miami teammate Mario Chalmers, Orlando’s Ryan Anderson and New Jersey’s Anthony Morrow.

It’s funny how human ‘logic’ works. This win doesn’t change any of the glaring issues this team has with horrible coaching, poor rebounding and schoolyard offense. They’ll be lucky to win one more game on this road stretch.

OK, final Joe value figure: For $219,982.00 the Hawks got 6 points.
That’s over $36,000 per point. Good work if you can get it. But lest you think that it is disgusting, thuink about this: If Joe were leading the league in scoring, at say 30 PPG, it would STILL be $7332.00 per point. My point is, he’s NOT worth it.

The Zone really affected the Suns in the 2nd half! Allowed the Hawks to make that a run with willie and josh!
Larry called to quick time outs at the beginning of that 3rd quarter and the Hawks started chipping at that 15 point Suns lead once he benched #24 and then JT….Give em credit! Good to be lucky too
JT is in trouble…..Larry’s milking KIRK now…..

I don’t care about Joe’s emotion, but it’s pretty clear at this point that Josh does a better job finding open teammates than Joe does when he is double teamed.
Joe is a scorer, and the goal needs to be to get him opportunities to catch and shoot or catch and drive for a floater or layup. Any possession where he is asked to create shots for himself or others from the perimeter is a wasted possession when Josh could do the same out of the post.

Willie Green has really picked it up. Zaza had a pretty good game tonight. Aside from a couple bad shots, Josh owned the night and was a big reason why the Hawks won. Marvin, why do I even bother.lol. Good luck finding something positive on him.
Good win.

Marvin should NEVER play in the paint again, unless he is finger-painting. Every shot attempt is either blocked by the rim or a PG from behind. Marvin should just render himself a 3 point specialist like Jamal and just leave it at that!
Sautee has spoken so it’s a wrap! Now, I can stop sulking and sleep with a smile on my face. These losses has been giving ole’ girl nightmares … got monsters under my bed. LOL!

HawkEye and Grandmaster are right on it about changing the way Joe is used. There’s no reason at all to not run him off multiple screens like Indy used to do with Reggie Miller. This is especially true this season because Joe’s just not gonna have the legs to consistently beat guys one-on-one all night every night. It’s be much easier for him to weave through lane traffic for easy catch-and-shoot scoring opportunities.

The Miami Heat need a center and Chris Kaman sure would fit the bill. It won’t be easy for that to happen. But the Heat are trying. Heat officials, including president Pat Riley, have been calling people who know Kaman to ask about him, a source told FOXSports.com on Wednesday. FoxSports
The thinking is the Heat’s best effort to get a center would be to sign Kaman — if his contract is bought out by New Orleans after the March 15 trade deadline. The Hornets recently sent Kaman away from the team for seven games in an effort to trade him. When that was unsuccessful, he was brought back. FoxSports

There’s no way in Hades that Willie should start over Teague or Joe. Can’t really have Joe guarding SFs every night cuz it’ll just wear on him too much and negatively impact his offense. Besides that, a guy like Willie coming off the bench is akin to a poor man’s Jamal Crawford. So let’s not get carried away.

Najeh, isn’t this called tampering? Something only Riles can do apparently. Shouldnt he be talking to the Hornets GM for permission to speak to the player’s agent?
If not, then what the hella is Sund doing? Kaman would be a player worth paying some LT for.

Good question. I would think so, especially if he’s talking to Kaman’s reps, but in this new NBA where the commissioner vetoes trades who knows what’s legal and what’s not.

Never understood it — I liked Billy K.
Even backed him on his never-ending quest to have a roster full of 6′9″ wing players.
But damn —- even he was gushing all over CP3 & Deron W. after each worked out for the Hawks b4 the draft.
Then came the decision — and ya can’t put that one on the spirit clowns. Now, the slum-lord — that reeked ATL Spirit!!!

Kirk isn’t terrible, but I just don’t see why Pargo can’t see the floor? I don’t get how Kirk didn’t have to earn his mins, yet Teague is still threatened to lose his by LD. He was actually playing well before Captain Kirk came back. Now I’m sure his confidence is at rock-bottom. Still smh.
I agree with Najeh. Joe needs to look to score more then create. Maybe if Teague handled the ball more, we could see this happen.
Well, a win is a win anyway you slice it.
