Los Angeles–It’s the usual starters for the Hawks. Steve Blake (ribs) is active for the Lakers.
Hawks players gathered around Josh Smith’s IPad to watch Knicks underdog sensation Jeremy Lin hit a game-winning 3 at Toronto.

No problem with Kirk getting more minutes, as long as he’s getting them at the 2 and not at Teague’s expense.

Hawks win by 7, Teague should have a nice game since lakers haven’t stopped any opposing PG’s yet this season, although he is going up against the “King Of Flop” in Fisher.

“Kirk Hinrich said he “feels great” physically and sounds as if he’s ready for more minutes: “I’m just staying patient.” ”
That is bad news for the Hawks. We all know he will get those minutes at PG and take more away from Teague.

Hawks can win this one. Lakers are not the Lakers anymore.
I think Teague is the key. If he can hit full bore attack mode, he will have a big night. PG’s have given Lakers trouble all year.

Good point. The Lakers defense has been atrocious this year. If Teague plays with confidence, he could easily have a 20+ point game. Yet, the real advantage we have is our bench depth. Our bench will win or lose this game.

1) ASG can’t afford a players stats board at Philips Arena (you know, where you look to see who is in the game, points, rebounds, etc).
2) AJC can’t afford public transportation for our beat-writers, so there is no live blogging during home games anymore. I’m sure they made MC pay his own way to L.A.
3) DO NOT START JEFF TEAGUE VS. JEREMY LIN. Teague, as we all know, takes games off, and HE IS HIGHLY OVERRATED DEFENSIVELY.
Hawks lose 112-85 tonight. Odom usually had 20 rebound games against us, but someone else will go off.

Oh my, Lin just does it again. That’s gotta be one of the craziest sports stories since Kurt Warner. I’m a white guy but married to an Asian woman, so I sorta understand how big this is for the Asian-American community. Those eugenics experiments like Yao are one thing, but Lin is a straight up American of Asian heritage. Let’s not even get into the Harvard connection, the fact he wasn’t drafted, got cut at least three times, played in the D-league twice, and damn near got cut by the Knicks before he blew up a couple of Saturday’s ago. What a fantastic story about what appears to be a genuinely good dude.

That’s why the contract Sund doled out to him is so laughably bad. We could have had someone like Barnes for 75% of the cost and gotten more production. Sund should be fired for that move alone.

Every time lane wide open stop running sorry pick and roll all that does is bring extra man up and crowds Teague space..Let him run ISO with floor spread out like we do with Joe and not just one time run 5 times in a row and watch what happens especially against slower pgs! I have seen Kobe go off against stifling defenses too many times to count him out in this game. At some point, he’s going to get hot and knock down some demoralizing shots in Joe’s face. Problem is, Lakers have missed just as many shots at the rim. Our layups have been pathetic though. Good Lord.
As I said last week, LD was thinking of changing starting lineup, then I predicted WE’D BEAT INDIANA AND LD WOULD FORGET ABOUT LINEUP CHANGES
LO AND BEHOLD, LD HAS NOT CONTEMPLATED LINEUP CHANGES SINCE THEN
This Ish happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Just when LD or Woody are about to switch things up, we win.

Josh starts with 10 and 4 about eight minutes in. With five minutes left he’s got 13 and 6. Wonder what happened…
JJ, typically passive against a marquee team, not even motivated enough to score 13 to get to a career milestone.
And, most importantly, when we’re getting dominated by the softer Gasol on the inside, Ivan doesn’t see the court to kick his $h!t in. Did he give LD a mean look on the plane?

You don’t have to be Phil Jackson to see that LD is a horrible coach…he sucks at x’s and o’s and he sucks at managing his personnel. He doesn’t know how to make in game adjustments and it shows with his rotations. Tracy should be playing the ” point forward ” position..and should see more minutes with the starters …Josh and Joe don’t trust Teague which is why they continue to dominate the ball. LD puts together the weirdest combinations out on the floor that absolutely do not work ! Josh is already a crybaby..but its LD who brings out the worst in him because he lets him shoot continuously and then benches him without any coaching critique what’s so ever….Mgmt is no better because they are going to blame every loss on the fact that the team is doing well considering they lost Horford….Really ? I didn’t know Horford was a franchise type of player ? they keep using the excuse of not having Horford like he’s play is on the level of a Derek Rose or Dwight Howard…gimme a freaking break….this team has lost games because the coach doesn’t have a clue on how to maximize the talent on this roster as a collective and he lacks head coaching experience when it comes to managing personalities like a Josh Smith (erractic, selfish) Joe ( no passion..fight…change up in his game..)

Rod from College Park,
I’m sure by now you that LaMarcus Aldridge turned his ankle at 1:55 into the first quarter. Unfortunately, Jamal “checked out” [of the game], “put a stamp on it” and “mailed it in”; I guess he [Jamal] was disgusted by not playing [in] the third quarter. Dude [Jamal] only scored 3 [three] points on 1-5 shooting from the field in 23:02 of playing time; that’s a sure sign of sulking and pouting. Jamal just refused to shoot the ball. I think Nate is upset with Crawford’s [lack of] defense and Crawford is upset with Nate McMillan’s minutes [playing time] distribution and for his [Crawford's] lack of playing time. Raymond Felton sucks by the way and really messes up the rhythm of Jamal Crawford as well as the other Trail Blazers’ players. I think Raymond Felton is jealous of Crawford and doesn’t want Crawford to outshine [spelling?] him [Felton].

“THIS IS THE HAWKS BLOG! WE OWN THIS! DON’T TALK ABOUT JEREMY LIN HERE!” – TMACfan
Just consider this advance scouting for when the Hawks lose to the Knicks and Lin embarrasses Teague just as bad as Nash does because the Hawks coaching staff can’t teach pick and roll defense.
“Today was Amare’s first game playing with Lin.”
http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=320204018
“But Lin’s main impact so far has come as a scorer, not as a distributor, as shown by his sub-2 assist/turnover ratio.”
Certainly he’s made a larger impact as a scorer but I believe he’s averaging around 8 assists since the New Jersey game and his shot attempts are about to go way down when Melo returns. The poor assist to turnover ratio is an indication of his sub-elite ball handling and passing skills moreso than an indicator of his role in the Knicks’ offense.
“Can we trade joe and marvin for lin” – J.J.M.

Rusty, Teague shot terribly from the field tonight, and had 2 assists to 1 turnover although he played the 2nd most minutes. Tonight’s loss is on LD. His 3rd quarter substitution of Josh for Vlad lost the game. And that was when LAL made their run to take the lead. After that, the Hawks never lead again. On top of that, LD doesn’t realize that with teams like LAL, MIA, and Bos, when you’re down seven points to them, its like being down 13-15 points, because they’re so smart with the ball. So when you see your team go down by 6 points, take a timeout. Not only do you take a timeout but CHANGE something.

Please bloggers, stop with the trade scenarios, after attending the Gearon circle jerk before the heat game it is now crystal clear that he does not have a clue. His saddest day as a Hawks fan was when the hawks traded………hold on……….stay with me………it’s coming…..Pete “I never won anything but INDIVIDUAL awards” Maravich. Immediately put down my nasty azz chicken nuggets and left. Not to disparage the dead but that told me all I needed to know. Yes the Pistol was fun to watch, his LSU teams never won and neither did his pro teams……well maybe once when he played with Bird but that was it. It explained everything, love of Domique, never won anything but a few scoring titlles, to his love of head case Osh and JJ, should not even be a Robin, but maybe a, canT think of a third wheel.to compare.

I honestly feel the only thing that could save the Hawks organization would be to fire LD immediately and convince either Phil Jackson or Jerry Sloan to take over as coach for the remainder of the season. The only thing that can save the Hawks is for someone to get through to Josh Smith. LD is an enabler… he was making relationships with everybody behind Woody’s back because he wanted Woody’s job. Ownership went with LD to placate the players, just like they hired Bob Weiss to placate Dominique, who was tired of Fratello telling him he had to guard someone.
Most likely scenario for the Hawks: Josh will be traded at the deadline next year, Zaza will sign elsewhere in the off-season and prior to the 2013-14 season the Hawks will begin full rebuilding mode. The organization may even Amnesty Joe at that point because it would have several benefits… by executing the Amnesty Clause while Joe can still play, another team is more likely to bid for him and pay part of his contract for the remaining years, thus saving the ASG money… let’s say $5m a season for the final three seasons.
That $15m in savings for the ASG out of the $69m they have committed to Joe over the final three seasons of his contract is nothing to sneeze at. Another factor is, if Joe is Amnestied, they money they owe him still counts toward the salary cap… so the Hawks don’t have to pay other players to meet the salary minimum. If the Hawks are rebuilding, this ensures that they will lose the maximum amount of games and have the highest possible lottery picks.

With 4:48 left in the 3rd quarter, the Hawks were down by 3, and Vlad came in the game for Josh right after Josh missed an ill-advised 3.
Josh sat until 8:03 left in the 4th, at which point the Hawks were down by 12. Both teams more or less traded baskets for the rest of the game, with neither team going on any extended runs.
I understand the need to rest your players, but sitting your best player (in this game) for 9 minutes during a key stretch of the game is just stupid. If LD was trying to send a message to him about shot selection, he may have lost this game in doing so.
I know a lot of people who post here think it’s a great idea to bench a guy for taking a bad shot or whatever, but it’s a lot easier to do that when you have other players on the team who can come in and do what he does. If the Hawks were 10-deep like the Nuggets and could bring in Birdman or Kenneth Faried to do a reasonable Josh impression, then it makes a lot more sense to use benching as a way to send a message. On this team, where Josh is by far the most important defensive player, this is just not a feasible strategy.
At the very least, he should have been back in to start the 4th, when the Hawks were only down 8 and still had a chance to steal this game. Instead, LD goes the first 4 minutes of the 4th with 4 bench players plus Zaza, allowing the lead to balloon to double digits.

Controversial;
Yawl may not want to read this.
Josh Smith had a great stat line.
15 points; 9 boards; 3 blks; 2 steals; 3 assts; *only 3 TOs ?
Why is it; that I felt like he was playing horrible ?
I was having ‘`Irritable Bowel Syndrome`’ & ‘`Gastroesophageal reflux`’
every time Josh touched the ball.
-side note-
I do not know who logs turnovers during NBA games;
but Josh was credited with only 3 ?
I lost track after 5.
I know because each time he turns it over;
as the other team scurries down the floor;
Josh remains on his end … debating with the ref;
showing him his arm, hand, wrist, whatever;
that has been detached by the bad guys.
(he has that wrinkled expression on his face of total consternation)
My question again:
how can he fill up the stat sheet and look so bad ?
Last note:
Some players are ‘`Pure Shooters`’, others are ‘`Scorers`’,
while Josh is a ‘`Chucker`’.

Having rooted for the Hawks since moving from NY, Reed Frazier Monroe, it’s all lets go Linsanity for the rest of 2012.

“I think the amnesty counts towards the salary floor, but it doesn’t matter if you are already over it. Or something like that.”
This is what I was trying to say… it clears the salary for cap purposes but if the team is below the minimum salary (85% of the cap I think) it raises the floor so the team doesn’t have to sign more contracts to get to the minimum. Thus, the Hawks could have Joe’s huge salary raise their salary floor without paying to staff actual talented players in replacement… thus ensuring losses and lottery picks.

Absurd contracts such as Kwame Brown for $7.5m for one season in GS are a product of teams being required to spend a certain percentage of the salary cap this year. If the Hawks are paying Joe’s amnestied salary, they wouldn’t have to do that, because it counts for salary minimum purposes (but doesn’t put them over the cap or tax threshold).

I don’t know what LD is trying to prove, or if he’s just foolish. But he needs to realize that the Hawks just don’t play good defense without Josh in the game. So anytime you have the opposition’s starting PF and C in the game, you may want to keep Josh in the game. Truth be told, the only thing keeping Josh from averaging 19+ ppg is his free throw shooting. If Josh shot 80% he’d easily be the Hawks best offensive player all around (when factoring in assists, scoring, and rebounding), and he’s already the best defender on the team. Josh is having a career year in rebounding, and averaging over 2 blocks per game (with 1.4 steals per game). How in the world does LD keep taking Josh out in the 3rd quarter, only to see the team start losing by double digit figures, by the time Josh gets back in the game? LD should keep Josh in the game the entire 3rd quarters of games, unless you’re up by 8-12 pts. And then let Josh get his rest at the beginning of the fourth quarter for 4-5 game time (which ends up being 10-14 real time minutes).

Grandad, you say Josh played poorly, though he played great on the defensive end, kept the team in the game on the offensive end in the first half. And started the 3rd quarter with 2 great assists (to Teague and Joe), and screened Joe free on a jumper in the lane for Joe on 3 out of 4 possessions. But you turn and say Vlad played great, even though he was the one getting out rebound, and scored on helplessly during the biggest stretch in the game (not to mention getting dunked on by Artest at the end of the game). We all have our opinions. But that’s a strange one.

And it’s not the first time he’s done that either. He’s even done it with JJ and Teague. Without Al Horford, he simply can’t sit Josh for long stretches like that. I’m dead serious. The only thing that can save the Hawks is for Josh Smith to become a superstar. JJ is what he is and he’s not getting any younger. Josh is the only Hawks player with superstar upside. LD is not the coach to bring that out of him. LD simply does not have the STATURE to tell Josh how to play and have him listen (not that I think LD knows the correct way to play or how to teach it). By hiring a first ballot hall of fame coach such as Phil Jackson or Jerry Sloan, you’d have a coach that was A. actually qualified to teach Josh the game of basketball and B. of a great enough stature that Josh would actually stop and listen. Who the F is LD? He will never have another head coaching job in the NBA. Why should Josh listen to him?
Now how extactly was I trolling?

Kontract, the Hawks should make a trade/deal to acquire a bonafide [spelling?] scorer. Willie Green is not the answer. I know it’s extremely unlikely to happen but the Hawks should try and swap Kirk Hinrich for Jamal Crawford straight up. Portland is disgusted with Felton and Jamal is unhappy. [The] Portland [Trail Blazers] would love a veteran guy like Hinrich to possibly take over or backup the point guard duties. Then, the Hawks could move Willie Green for another serviceable big [man]. Firing LD is out of the question; that termination [firing] would make no sense and would be a bad PR [Public Relation] move. The Hawks’ [win-loss] record is just too good at 18-11 right now to make that drastic of a decision such firing LD. LD is not the best coach in the NBA but he’s not the Hawks’ biggest problem. The Hawks’ biggest problems are weak front court depth and the lack of scoring, more specifically, the lack of a bonafide [spelling?], prolific scorer. Jamal Crawford gives you that scorer, playmaker, and long-range shooter who can stretch the defense, however, Jamal’s defensive ability [or lack thereof] would be a major area of concern for the Hawks and the AJC bloggers who hate Jamal.
