Atlanta Hawks at Magic: Game thread

OrlandoLarry Drew says Erick Dampier will be dressed tonight so look for Dampier to get a shot at checking Dwight Howard. “We need a big body,” Drew said. Hawks coaches went over plays with Dampier last night.

  • Josh Smith on being left off the All-Star team: “I felt I deserved it for two years in a row. You’ve got to factor in there is a lot of politics involved in the All-Star selection. Once you get that it’s really about politics, then nothing really surprises you. I call it ‘Nothing But Associates,’ NBA. It’s all who you know. I guess I don’t know the right people or kiss enough ass. All I can do is play my game. The whole world knows I deserve to be in an All-Star. I can’t be salty about not making it I’ve just got to keep doling the things I’ve been doing on the court and that’s playing at a high level.”
  • Josh on media and fellow players saying he got snubbed: “I watched TNT. I thank those guys for having me as an All-Star. I think that Louis Williams deserves to be on there. He’s been the most surprising player and the most efficient player for [the Sixers]. Rudy Gay should have made it. But it is what it is. I can’t really point a finger and blame anybody because, at the end of the day, when you leave it up to certain people that still have ties to their agents [and] players in this game today probably [are] just putting in a bid over the phone or however they do it. You have to factor that in.”
  • Some Tweeps ask me if Josh was taking a shot at Joe Johnson with his comments. He wasn’t. As you can see, he’s just mad at the politics involved in how the team is picked.
  • A Magic media guy asked Josh if he thought Ryan Anderson also was snubbed: “He’s played good but he also plays my position. So I felt I deserve it over him, too. Maybe he deserves to be in the three-point contest. I’ve been playing at a high level for two years now. I guess you have got to get snubbed two or three times before [you make it].”
  • Josh on whether the snub will motivate him: “I can’t play no better than what I’m playing, you know what I’m saying? Just keep playing the same way I’ve been playing since Al [Horford] went down and that’s at a high level [like] even before the injury to Al.”
  • Drew: “It’s really unfortunate. I just think he’s definitely an All-Star. The way he impacts both ends of the floor, he deserves to be on that team.”
  • Joe: “He’s been playing great and he has the numbers to show it. It just didn’t happen. It’s unfortunate. I think we all feel he should have been an All-Star but it happens. For him, he just has to move on and continue playing. I feel like he’s an All-Star in everybody’s eyes here.”
  • Stan Van Gundy: “The guys who make the team are really good players but there are always guys who are left off that can make a case. Smith is one of them.”
  • Joe on his selection: “It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of it. It never gets old. I’m looking forward to coming back to Orlando in a couple weeks with my family and enjoying everything Orlando has to offer.”
  • After coming here like 57 times during my Heat beat days, I’m still trying to figure out what Orlando has to offer. February days like this are an attraction, of course, but weather wasn’t really a factor when I lived in Miami and it still isn’t enough to make me like it here.
  • Van Gundy on the Hawks: “They are different without Horford. They’ve moved Josh Smith back to the four spot and now they’ve got a little more 3-point shooting in the floor and they shoot it very well.”
  • More Van Gundy: “They are a huge post-up and isolation team. There’s not a lot of movement. They do a great job passing out of double teams. So we either have to dig down and play them one-on-one or double and rotate out of it.”
  • Van Gundy on last year’s playoff series: “Their defense was good against us and it affected us. We missed some shots that were presented to us but their defense was outstanding. That certainly was the biggest factor in our struggles.”
  • Glen Davis: “Me and Dwight are physical guys. We bang down there. But at the same time that doesn’t matter if we don’t match their intensity. They are physical, too, like with Ivan Johnson.”
  • Following shootaround the Hawks made Ivan sing “Happy Birthday” to Zaza Pachulia, who turned 28 today. Ivan enthusiastically fulfilled his rookie duty with a smile.

that is what i have been saying big ray. he never put enough distance between himself and the other guys especially when the other guys numbers are down because of the type of teams they are on and he cant say he is giving up points to teammate al anymore or crawford. look at the philly team equal scoring among six guys every night and same with the bulls.

By virtue of Indiana’s loss, the Hawks leapfrog them and are tied for 3rd with Philly.

Lets see Josh get 19 rebounds against Miami or the Lakers or the Suns…..

Its about matchups..Give him credit but who checked him? Some Stiff named Anderson? C’mon…Take it easy now….

pierce is going at a 17/5/5 clip.

again josh deserves it but the other guys certainly deserve the consideration too and have waited in line as well when they should have had ops.

josh is 16/9/3 not that far ahead ot the other guys, with a stretch of four games where he only barely got into double figures once at 11 points. he fell asleep got tired or became complacent. but he wasnt ballin like this last week as i watched three losses at home when he sucked and sulked. sorrry truth.

Josh Smith compared to Luol Deng gets more boards, more dimes, more steals, more blocks, shoots better from the field, and shoulders more offensive and defensive responsibility. Deng scores 0.4 points per game more and has an assist/turnover ratio 0.1 better than Josh. He does shoot 3s and free throws better, but there is no excuse for him getting a spot over Josh. None. Doesn’t matter if Josh should be producing more. He is producing more than Deng.

Rod is right. Politics as usual.

Slimjr,

Iggy or Deng has not led their team to an ECF. Why should Josh have to be different. Joe should lead this team, not Josh.

Anderson ain’t no stiff either. 16 and 7 with 43% from 3 and one of the better offensive rebounding rates in the league. You really could make a case that he deserves a spot over Deng, considering the time Deng has missed this year.

No excuse for Deng over Josh.

Je je please, if josh had a bridge to burn he would already be in the all star game. All he did was speak the truth. You. Know it, the media know it and the coaches. If he don’t make it in ever, it not the end of the world. He can afford to buy a ticket.

Melo is overrated. A brilliant scorer but his defense is almost non existent sorta like Jamal..One dimensional.. Cant win Championships with my 2 and 3 playing no defense…

Sixers are a 3 seed at 18-9.
Hawks are a 4 seed at 18-9.

Deng scored 8 points on 4/13 shooting in Chicago’s blowout loss to Atlanta earlier this year. Other players play bad games too, not just Josh.

Again, All Star is relative. It’s not about what you should be or could be. It’s about whether you are better than the competition… at least, it’s supposed to be.

I mean, sh-t, if we are going to only include people who play up to their potential, then put Jason Kidd in instead of Russell Westbrook. Replace Melo with KG.

Big Ray when you are quiet and utter an occasional sentence or two, I think ” is Ray as dumb as he looks…. ?” Then on nights like to night you open your mouth and confirm it.

Slimjr,

Isaiah and Rodman were like that, but they got respected. We all see the many flaws Josh has, but no reason that he should not get the respect he deserves.

Really tough win, but we’ll all take an ugly win over an ugly loss! Clearly Josh should be an All-Star Deug or Pierce should stay home, but it is what it is! Josh, keep playing hard and staying active on the boards!

RCP [Rod from College Park],

In all fairness and since the Sixers are playing at a high level within the Eastern Conference, at least one Sixers’ player should make [or be on] the All-Star team. [Danny] Granger and/or Josh [Smith] should be on the All-Star team instead of Deron Williams and/or Carmelo Anthony.

iggy 13/7/5/2 is nothing to sneeze at on a team that has 6 scorers avg double figures. deng is 16/7/3. not that mush spread when you look at the totality of what a coach might look at. of those i say melo is the one who shouldnt be there even though his numbers are better but he is because he brings in the advertising bucks.

sadly i think and said this east team, within thirty minutes of the announcment of the team and josh got the short end of the deal, is very imbalanced as they have about five sf and josh is a pf. iggy is more a two than a three and choked the air out of jj with his defense.

i dont understand how they composed the team and that is where josh got shafted. melo got numbers for sure and a lot of street cred that i have always found suspect. when denver escorted him out of town and karl had the cat ate canary smile i thought right there melo was way over rated as a team guy. hibbert was there as was al in the past because there is no height in the east.

as much as i rag on josh it is because his flaws are soo overbearing and it just jumps in your face. rod i hear you though again i say, he shot himself in the foot at close range where he needs to stay on the court to become what i have long said he needs to be as a smash not the smoo sh!t i still cant say it. smoove is for a jazz player with a rhythm all his own and josh has none of that. now nique was flat out smoove. there is no glide in josh though he can flat out fly. i love the guy and when he brings it fine but sometimes a guy who is a year older than him and a rookie shows more interest in the game than he does and that just shouldnt ever happen. that never happens to say a kobe.
