Vivlamore filling in for Cunningham. Here is your report from this morning’s shootaround in preparation for tonight’s game against the Suns.
The key to snapping a two-game losing streak is the Hawks’ defensive energy, according to coach Larry Drew.
As the Hawks host the Suns tonight, Drew emphasized defense to his team during the morning shootaround and with the media following the session.
“We can’t be a team with low energy,” Drew said. “If you are going to be small [with injuries to centers Al Horford and Jason Collins] you have to be a team that plays with a lot of energy. You have to be quick. Because you are a little smaller you have to do some things differently, particularly with us. Not having Al or Twin it limits us in a certain area as far as what our defensive schemes have been. Offensively nothing much changes there. It’s more on the defensive end. We’ll have to make some adjustments.”
Drew did say the Hawks needed to share the ball offensively, but his efforts were concentrated on the defensive side of the ball Monday.
While Josh Smith agrees that defense is a priority he is clearly more concerned with the offensive issues during the past two games.
“Everybody has their opinions,” said Smith when told of Drew’s comments about the defensive energy. “I think that defense is definitely the key to winning basketball games but if we don’t have any continuity on the offensive end it really definitely hurts us. When the ball sticks on one floor we get baited into playing one-on-one basketball. That’s what hurts this basketball team because when we are sharing the basketball, moving it from side to side, everybody is benefitting off goods shots, I think we help each other that much more on the defensive end.”
To clarify his remarks, I asked Smith if he was referring to ‘the notion of one person trying to do it all?’
“Iso … it’s pretty much self explanatory,” Smith answered.
Iso-Joe? Perhaps. The Hawks have had issues the past two games with several players trying to do too much in losses to the Grizzlies and 76ers.
“Definitely,” Joe Johnson said when asked if he agreed with Smith’s assessment. “I think we do get a little selfish at times out there. It’s part of it. You have a lot of guys that come out and try to do it on their own that hurts you even more. We have to get some ball movement, get everybody involved, get back to playing loose and having some fun.”
* Monday was the first day NBA teams were able to sign players to 10-day contracts. However, the Hawks had no immediate plans to do so in light of being without Collins for the next two weeks.
“Not a whole lot of news,” Drew said of the team’s pursuit of a big man. “Right now we are going as we are. We are a little small but we’ll just have to play the hand that’s dealt to us.”
* With the Suns in town, it marks the return of former Hawks draft pick Josh Childress. The former No. 6 overall pick is averaging 3.5 points per game for the Suns in 11 games, all off the bench.

No changes needed, just more “defensive energy”

“Hawks get Tyson Chandler, Markieff Morris, Grant Hill
Knicks get Steve Nash, Robin Lopez
Suns get Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Iman Shumpert”
This is not a bad trade at all. Chandler is four years older than Josh, but his production probably isn’t going to drop for another two or three years, at least. And Markieff Morris has shown some promise. Ideally, since the Hawks are giving up the best player in that deal (ranking Josh over Nash due to age), they would also get a draft pick in that trade.

With respect to the last two games, against the Grizzlies and the Sixers, I think Josh’s assessment is closer to the point than LD’s. The half court defense in both games was not that bad. What killed the Hawks was poor ball movement on offense, resulting in either turnovers or bad shots, which in turn resulted in transition opportunities for the other team. The field goal percentage and points in the paint allowed looks bad because of these transition baskets.
Teams like the Grizzlies and Sixers who don’t always have a real go-to scorer on the floor are at their best when they get those kind of easy buckets. Make them convert in the half court and they will struggle. But if you don’t take care of the ball and use possessions efficiently, you play right into their hands.

Najeh, chances are, the Greek Afro won’t play.
Methinks that while Josh may begrudingly accept that Joe is going to take his fair number of shots, I suspect that he has little use for a PG who has as many FGAs as he does (especially a younger PG). Pure speculation on my part, I just think that the whole “move the ball” thing is a dog-whistle for “there is a pecking order and I’m the second option on this here team”.

Najeh – thoughts about the All Star game:
I say travel to the All Star game with just two C’s on the East, Howard and Bosh. That’s all you need. Amare can play some spot C also.
Put Josh, and Peirce as backup F’s
JJ backup SG
DeRon at reserve PG.
Still have 2 spots open – I say Rondo and Iggy. The East would be small, but very athletic, and with great D. You could make arguments for Deng and Jennings, but I say stick with Rondo and Iggy.
Stein wants to put a Pacer player on there. Shaft Rondo, and stick Hibbert on there if needed.
But I’m a homer, and I’m really pushing for two All Stars from the Hawks, so it is what it is.
Shaft DeRon since he’s on a losing squad, and record plays a large role on the selections, and throw Jennings in there if you want. I’m just not sold that Jennings is as good as people are saying. I prefer DeRon at the Point.

Najeh, cross-court passes are also lethal against teams like the 76ers and Grizzlies. I think in both cases, the opposing teams came ready to attack and immediately put the Hawks on their heels and they couldn’t recover. We’ve seen it with the T’Wolves and Pistons in the past few weeks, also. We just had the ability to roar back against the lesser teams.
It is interesting that Josh is emphasizing offensive excution in the above statement. That seems a little out of character.

So Josh says LD’s thoughts are everybody having their own opinions. Hilarious! Hey Grandad, how would you like one of your players saying, everybody has their own opinions, talking about the Coach?
The other thing I’ve noticed Josh say, not just here but another time also, is that offensive touches affect his defense. You gotta grow beyond that. He includes everyone in this quote, but if you never see the ball on O – you still have to play stellar D. The one should not affect the other. Gotta grow mentally here.

I mean seriously, how much more can one organization tolerate from a 7th year stubborn PF who constantly kills team chemistry? Oh, i forgot, we are talking about the Atlanta Hawks.

Steve, Josh isn’t going to be an all-star…he has been too inconsistent lately and IMO he should be averaging a double double with Al being out. That hasn’t been the case and he needs to be a 20/10 guy for us. I know he’s not Zach Randolph, but he has to be our Zach Randolph. His minutes should be the only thing we should be worried about.
Don’t be surprised if its Mikki Moore from the NBDL that gets a call. Another guy who needs to learn from Collins about how to keep a job more than a year. Somehow, Collins can keep coming back year after year.
Say we get the same results as last year, do we seriously have justification to keep Sund and LD?

Buddy Grizzard,
Playing Marvin more minutes won’t result in his numbers increasing. He will just turn invisible for those remaining minutes. I have no idea where some here are getting the Marvin is having a career year nonsense from. He is averaging 10.4ppg, 5.6rpg, 44%FG, and 49%3pt. Same numbers as last year, with the exception of his 3pt % which is up. No team will trade for him, unless they are trying to get rid of some garbage. They guy can’t post up Jodie Meeks or Jrue Holiday.
I am not sure what your problem with Pargo is, but he is just as good as Kirk at this point. Pargo was an extremely good backup point guard behind CP3 two years ago, and had serious knee problems which forced him to have 2 knee surgeries. He seems to be just getting back to old form, and was doing a good job of running the second unit, not giving up leads, and knocking down shots before Kirk came back. Kirk is not a point guard anymore, and if his shot is not falling, he is useless. I have not been impressed with his defense either, as quick pg’s blow by him as well. I hope Kirk is only being played to showcase him for a trade, because the team has been much worse since he came back.

AJ, I haven’t commented much, because I haven’t really seen the last three games. But I think Josh doesn’t mind a PG who has that many FGAs. However, I think what Josh minds is a PG who looks to score FIRST before passing. In other words, if Teague gets his points after the ball swings, or is going from side to side, that is cool. But if Teague chooses to penetrate more often than swinging first, you’re not getting the defense off balance BEFORE attacking. This leads to harder offensive rebounds, and tougher fga in the lane. The other day when Josh was benched for the 3rd, I did see the last play he was in. And that turnover had as much to do with Teague inability to know when to come and get the ball, when a teammate is in distress than Josh’s bad pass. With 4-5 seconds left on the clock, and Josh is on the baseline (also Josh picked up his dribble AFTER Zaza didn’t clear out after missing his shot attempt), Teague has to know, he can’t stay at the top of the key, instead he has to move to the side so he can give Josh a better passing lane. On that sequence, Josh ended up mad at Zaza and Teague (can’t say I blame him for that one).
People are saying Josh are taking way too many bad shots. However, against Memphis, he only attempted two jumpers OUTSIDE of the lane. And three turnovers isn’t great, but it certainly isn’t enough to bench a player over.
Against Philadelphia, Josh that simply had a bad shooting night, that wasn’t basketball IQ. He only took 5 jumpers (going 1 for 5), but he also went 1 for 6 around the basket, that’s not basketball IQ, that’s simply having a bad night. If anything, Josh seems like he may be exhausted physically, and is losing his legs a little, causing bad shooting. Josh hustles so much on defense, and even more with the injuries. I truly think he is fatigued more than anything, but could be wrong.
And for those who say Josh needs to use the shot selection of Ivan Johnson, need to back up from the television. Ivan shoots a higher percentage of his shots from outside the lane than Josh does. And in only 15 minutes per game (less than half of Josh’s playing time), he is committing half the amount of turnovers Josh commits in 33.5 minutes per game, at a much higher usage. So its easy to assume that if Ivan was to receive more playing time, his turnover would be even greater (evident by the fact of 5 of the last 7 games, Ivan has committed 2 turnovers in less than 29 minutes of play).

“Sorry, Hawks. Can’t give you two All-Stars when you have four wins in 12 tries against .500-or-better teams. The consolation: Atlanta is a tidy 12-0 against teams with losing records to rank as the only unbeaten team in that category even after losing Horford. And it’s 10-1 when Joe Johnson scores 20-plus.”
They ranked them 14th, while the Timberwoves,(while i like their core(no pun intended), are ranked 12th behind Portland at 11. The Celtics come in at 13.

i concur. josh should be the 4th or 5th offensive option but he wants to be the guy that the offense runs through. it’s asinine. josh is hurting the development of teague. there are way too many instances of teague becoming a bystander, passively watching others throw up bricks and turning the ball over. everyone on this blog knows about my disgust for josh because he’s a selfish loser.

SteveW, show me where Josh ever stated that offensive touches affects HIS defense? It doesn’t. He’s saying lack of ball moving and getting everyone involved, affects the TEAM defense. And I don’t know one analyst (Hubie Brown, JVG, any of them) who doesn’t agree with this same statement. If you look at majority of Josh’s turnovers, they come from passes attempting to get teammates involved, not from dribbling mistakes (like are over exaggerated on this blog). Josh’s assist rate dropped when Horford went down, not because he stopped passing as much, but because Horford’s hands (who was normally on the other end of the passes under the basket) are much better than Zaza’s catching a pass or finishing at the rim. I’m not a drinking man, but if you took two shots of Jack Daniels every time Zaza dropped a pass, or missed a point blank layup, you’d be drunk by half time.

His rebound rate, assist rate, 3 point percentage, and true shooting percentage are at career highs, while his turnover rate is at a career low. He is definitely having a career year from a per-minute standpoint.
Of course, the fact that this is the best he has played in his career only highlights what a disappointment his career has been. But at least he has become a pretty efficient role player, which is what he frustratingly failed to be consistently for the last six years.

Najeh, AJ, O’B, Here’s the solution for it all. Marvin can’t handle the ball, Zaza can’t handle the ball. Joe is normally doubled. So out of the starters, Josh is the 2nd best player to handle the ball in the half court offense. So this is how you change this. Start McGrady over Marvin! McGrady will be able to have the ball in his hands more, and run the offense through him at the top of the key, on majority of your plays. This will also cut down on the inability to score on defenses in the beginning of the 3rd quarter! Let McGrady be the general at the beginning of the first and third quarters, and at the end of the fourth quarter. He still will average the same amount of minutes, but give you more options on who to possess the ball more.
Teague – Joe- McGrady – Josh – Zaza
Kirk – Willie Green – Marvin – Ivan (go to a 9 man rotation on majority of the nights, Vlad is a liability).

LD has been taking shots at Josh in the media this year, and Josh has taken a few shots back at LD. Not sure what that relationship really is, but it’s something to keep and eye on. I have to side with Josh on his comments though. Defense was not the problem in the Philly or Memphis game. Especially not from Josh’s perspective. It was offesive execution. Iso’s, dumb passes, and jumpshots caused many fastbreak baskets for both teams, which has nothing to do with defense. We should not be running iso’s at all without Jamal Crawford, as was the most effective iso player on the team. Joe is not an Iso guy unless he gets hot. I don’t understand why they don’t post him on the block more, as he can shoot over his man, and he also is deadly with that floater. That top of the key tricky dribble jump shot is terrible offense. TMac has to look to score. If he can’t score consistently, we are in serious trouble. I llok for us to get a win tonight, as Pheonix plays no defense, but when we play solid defensive teams, with this bad offense, we will continue to loose by double digits.

It’s really not that difficult. It’s actually very obvious. Marvin does not handle the ball longer than 2 seconds at any time, so he poses no threat. That is why his turnovers are so low. You don’t want to overuse Mcgrady, but that one move alone would make our starting unit 10 times better. Marvin is not sarting material. He is a standstill jumpshooter, and that it it.

Agreed. Yet, LD is a complete idiot; he will not address the issues of his poor offensive schemes, horrid ability to utilize mismatches, and players’ ability to make free throws/drive to the basket. Even if the Hawks land a big man, they will continue to lose against good teams because of these reasons. It’s pretty pathetic that Jeff Teague(always hated on by LD, which screws him up), and Ivan Johnson are the only players on the team who have a clue. We need a coach that demands discipline from his players.

Beone, Not only did Josh say this, but Joe echoed it. Its ASG fault. Stop getting these first term coaches who the players see no credibility in, so they can command respect. In the NBA, an assistant coach is almost like an employee to the PLAYERS not head coach. But you go and promote him. Go get Mike Fratello, JVG, Hubie Brown, and so on. Josh Smith’s entire career, you can not point to one season where he’s EVER been coached by someone in the top 10 in coaching abilities. And in actuality, this is his 2nd season ever with a coach who had offensive plays. Al had Donovan (a mastermind on offense) in college, Joe had D’Antoni, Kirk had Roy Williams and Flip Saunders. Josh came from high school where the play was ‘Get Josh the ball and move back’. That’s the problem. As an organization, don’t draft a PROSPECT (which Josh was) if you’re not committed to putting people who KNOW what they’re talking about around the guy. There’s no way, I’d take a high IQ’d 18 year old kid and stick him the mail room to ‘learn’ how to run the company. Josh failures speak more of this organization than anything if you TRULY think about it. Because no matter how you look at it. Josh and Al are the only players drafted (Teague still in early stages) by the Hawks to even be close to successful in the NBA in the last 10 seasons. That’s an organizational problem more than the players. What other team in the league can say they’ve only drafted or developed 2 considerably productive players. Memphis has more, OKC has more, Washington has more, Orlando, the CLIPPERS, Philly, Indiana.

Ra’mon, I’ve seen Teague make some “young PG mistajes” too. But there are times when his quickness provides the team’s greatest mismatch. So if he can get to the rim easily, that isn’t a bad offensive play for the team.
Now, I do recall in the memphis game, Gasol rotated on a pick and roll and was stuck on the perimeter. Teague easily penetrated for a basket with no shotblocker in sight. In the very next possession, they ran the same play but this time Gasol stayed in the paint. Teague opted to penetrate again and his shot was sent in the other direction.
Hopefully, they will “all just get along”.

I have been making this point for 3 years. It does not look as bad with Horford, but now with bad hands Zaza, there is no way Marvin should start. McGrady seems to know how to get Zaza the ball in scoring position, as well, as I am almost positive that he is responsible for most of Zaza’s assist this year. Simple question, if you’re in a car, and the driver is leading you down the wrong road, are you going to say anything, or just ride? You’re on the plane, and the pilot is leading you into the trees, are you going to stop him, or just ride? You’re an NBA player watching your prime years go by with no postseason success, and the coach(es) continue trying to do the same thing that caused you to lose before, are you going to say something or just ride?
There are only 2 coaches in the NBA that would have Marvin Williams starting the last 3-4 seasons, and the Hawks hired both of them. There are only 2 coaches in the NBA who would’ve started Bibby the last 3-4 seasons, and the Hawks hired both of them. There’s been no recent coach in the last 15 seasons to win a title with a motion offense. But the Hawks hired the coach who think it can happen. There’s been only one team who won a title with no offensive game plan in the last 20 seasons, and the Hawks hired the one who thought he could do it annually.
Until its new management, new coaches, new owners, I’m going to think the best things for Joe and Josh career’s is to be traded or amnestied. Because this team in suits, isn’t bringing any banners to this arena, unless its David Banner or the Hulk.

Rod,
The one play call that makes no sense to me is the Iso-JJ at the end of quarters. He hardly ever scores on those isos.
I’m with Najeh. They need to let Teague handle the ball at the end of the quarter, because the JJ iso leads to the other 4 players standing around, while JJ goes 1 on 2, and most of the time, he is unsuccessful.

Wow. He did all those things and still had 7 blocks in one game (LOL). Never seen a guy who never hustles, and argues all the time do that. If he was not hustling, then what were Marvin and Joe doing?

AJ, I think what’s happening with Teague, is what happens anytime any PG takes over a team, and there name isn’t Nash. Speaking of Nash, I would trade Kirk, Marvin, and Zaza for Nash and Lopez. And after this, I would put Teague as my two guard, with Joe playing the 3.

Could not agree more. I cringe every time I see it. I seriously can only remember 1 time this year when he scored on that play. Joe is not Jamal. I don’t understand how many more times that play needs to fail before LD realizes to stop running it. I would much rather let Teague penetrate and kick on those end of the quarter plays.

From MC’s blog dated August 11, 2010. “Inside Camp Drew”.
“There was lots of motion and ball movement, yes, but what stood out was how much of the action had players cutting to the basket. It seemed there always was an option for the next man in the sequence to either accept the ball while moving to his position or reverse field and look for a cut to the basket. Not everything happens on the strong side, either, so ball-watching and inattentiveness by defenders can mean backdoor baskets.
“It’s very difficult to guard,” Conner said. “You have to be precise in your defensive schemes. You can be beat at any spot on the floor at any time. NBA teams don’t like to guard a lot of movement and screens. I’ve heard the guys [Hawks players] are all for it and are excited about it.”
For weeks L.D. has said his system would “force the ball to move” and I get that now. Things happen so fast there’s not much opportunity for holding the ball. The screens and cuts happen quickly and if the first option is not there then the ball quickly swings the other way, leading to move movement.
Not much possession time is spent on the one- or even two-man game. Each guy gets a chance to touch the ball at different spots on the floor. Decisions must be made quickly for things to flow correctly.
L.D. has some work to do with that. Woody had a lot of stuff he wanted to run too but he never could coax guys to do it consistently. Things got tough and the Hawks freelanced.
Drew is going to have to break the Hawks out of their iso offense, sometime-y defense mold. It will be interesting to see how he manages it and how the players take to it once it’s time to do the work.

That my friend, is the 10 million dollar question. I am convinced he walked in on somebody in the organization doing something that they don’t want to get out. There is no other explantion. Philly guarded Marvin with Jodie Meeks, and Jrue Holiday. That is the amount of respect they give him.

“Everybody has their opinions.” Not sure how fruitful it is for a ‘player’ (one of 13) to characterize the head coach’s position as one among many, if in fact that’s what Josh is doing.
In the NBA veteran players either allow themselves to be managed, or they don’t. When they don’t they become a cancer, and for the health of the patient, cancers need to be removed or purged. Josh, both by deeds and words, seems to have made it crystal clear over time that he will not be managed here in Atlanta, PERIOD.
If there is any hope for Josh to come close to approaching his on-court potential, he badly needs the combination of attributes offered only by the Boston Celtics. No other organization has the unique combination of organizational culture and history, no nonsense head coach, a cadre of accomplished veteran leaders who’ll put you in your place, and a demanding point guard required to force an arrogant talented youth like Josh that team goals are primary and you play the role defined by the coach or you don’t play at all. This cat has consistently shown that he’ll eat coaches like Drew for lunch, squash organizations like the Hawks, and obliterate meek captains like Joe. “Can’t win with him, can’t coach with him, can’t do it…”

Ra’mon, I agree, there is an adjustment anytime a new PG takes over the reigns. I’m just of the opinion that Josh isn’t looking to be one of the first guys to “buy-in”. We saw some of this last year after the Hinrich trade, Kirk would stand there waiting for Josh to pass him the ball and Josh would dribble by him like he was a referee. Josh don’t need no stinkin’ PG, Josh just needs the ball. The excuse makers claimed “he only trusts a PG who can actually lead a fast break”. Those guys have been remarkably quiet as Josh ignores Teague a few times each and every game.

newkid,
While I agree with you somewhat, Josh would thrive in a number of situations. San Antonio, LA. Pheonix, Philly come to mind. He simply needs a point guard who is a leader, and runs a offense, or a head coach who knows basketball and is well respected. A coach who tells Josh to shoot the open jumper when it is there all season, but then turns on him in the playoffs and says I’ve told him many times to not shoot it in the media, will tend to not earn respect. A head coach who takes jabs at him all the time in the media, but won’t call out Joe Johnson, Horford, or Marvin Williams will not command your respect. If Josh played with Paul, Rondo, Nash, Kobe, Derron Williams, he would be all star material. No diss to Teague, but he has not become a floor General yet. Hell, if LD put Josh on the floor with TMac more, I am convinced his shot selection would improve.

AJ, question, how often do you see Teague PASS on a fast break, that’s the concern, lol. That’s why Josh doesn’t pass it to him. And if you remember, before he got hurt, Al wouldn’t pass it to Teague on fast breaks either also, because he knew he wouldn’t get it back. I’m actually thinking, it wouldn’t be bad to have Teague as a two guard, and another facilitator at the point. Teague doesn’t seem interested in averaging 10 assists in his career, lol. He reminds me of Terry, but with better defense, and less of a jumper.

Have you seen Hinrich play? I would dribble by him also, he is horrible. Not to mention he is no longer a decent point guard. Teague is not a pass first point guard, he is a scoring point guard. Rod, if a coach like Pop had the essential supporting cast, he might very well be willing to take on a cat like Josh. But Pop can’t – and won’t – attempt to integrate that kind of cancer with soft spoken Duncan, and laid back Parker. No, Josh needs a VERY strong and demanding village in which to be integrated. He needs to have cats like Russell, Hondo, Heinsohn, Cornbread, and other past greats with multiple rings coming around to consistently cajole and support the messages of the likes of KG, Paul, Doc, Ray, etc. In my opinion that village only exists in Boston. He – and others (probably including his pop) – will dispute it, but Josh needs Boston in the worst way.

Luke Cage, its about a certain court vision where you see the entire court, or tunnel vision where you see the basket. Its not a negative, just different. Not a good enough reason in my opinion. Teague still handles the ball better on the break than Josh, and still pushes the ball to the rim better than anyone else on this team. Josh is smart enough to realize that Teague is still a work in progress as a distributor, and to know that he’s only going to get better by getting more opportunities.

newkid,
I think you are a little off in your assesment. Hell, TMac has only been here for a couple of months, and has already commented on Josh’s high basketball IQ. He does not need a village, He needs a coach he repects, that knows how to design plays to take advantage of mismatches, and runs some sort of offense. If you continuously have Josh spotted up behind the 3 point line, with Joe running iso plays and a scared to shoot Marvin on the wing, then either Joe or Marvin will continue to pass to a wide open Josh Smith on the perimeter, and the jump shots will continue. Or, he needs a pass first point guard like Rondo, Kidd, Paul, Rubio. I think Teague will develop into a great pg, but now he is a shoot first pg.

A lot of the plays Josh makes no one else on team can make ….true sometimes Josh needs to understand that he needs to give the ball up especially after he’s had a couple of turnovers or if were fighting our way back into the game. I would never pass to Kirk either cause he doesn’t like to run he will stop at the top of the key and try to setup the offense because he knows he’s not a threat to finish that’s not his game!

Tony Parker is a scorer more than a pure point guard. Parker has routinely been the 2nd high scorer on the Spurs. That’s why his career average is higher than Ginobili’s. For the last 7 seasons, in the playoffs, its been about stopping Parker, more than stopping Duncan (evident by his Finals’ MVP).

I do agree that Josh should give the ball up after defensive rebounds, but Teague, right now is not a great facilitator. McGrady is the best on the team, that is why he should be in with the starters. Teague is a one man fast break at this point.

All true, but it still doesn’t mean Duncan brings the ball up on fast breaks.
I don’t think Josh is an idiot or a cancer or whatever. I think he has a very good understanding of the game. He just doesn’t have a very good understanding of his own abilities and limitations. Yeah, he handles the ball better than most big men, but that still doesn’t mean he handles it well, and it certainly doesn’t mean he handles it better than Teague. He needs to give the ball up, because in the long run as Teague becomes a better passer it will only benefit him.

Najeh, who would you rather have FINISHING a fast break? Josh or Teague? Who’s more likely to kick out to Joe for a wide open 3 Josh or Teague? If Teague would pass more on the break, then I’d be all for it. But as I said Al does it too. So it must be a universal feeling that Teague doesn’t routinely make the best plays on the court in the full court. If you think about it. Josh always look up court when he gets the ball to make sure nothing is there, before finally giving it to Teague. Can’t say that is wrong or right, depends on the situation.

It took time for Parker, Paul, D. Williams, Nash, Rondo, or any other PG you guys wish we had and won’t get for them to get the level they are at, again, Teague hasn’t started many games, he will grow into his role sooner than later.

“Who’s more likely to kick out to Joe for a wide open 3 Josh or Teague?”
Josh is much more likely to kick out to Joe for a wide open 3, which is partly why I don’t want him leading fast breaks. I am tired of fast breaks ending in jump shots. I’d much rather Teague take it coast to coast and make a layup. Over time he’ll get better at finding teammates on the break.
Najeh Davenpoop

As for Josh finishing fast breaks, of course I’d rather see him finish them. The problem is that too often when he takes it coast to coast, he doesn’t even get himself a good look. Which shot is more likely to go in — a Josh dunk attempt set up by Teague, or the acrobatic and often contested layups that Josh often has to make when he tries to create his own attempt?
Josh needs to take his own advice. Share the ball with the point guard. If the point guard isn’t rewarding you on the break, yell at him if you want, but keep feeding him so he’ll learn. It does Teague no good to stand around watching Josh leading the break, just like it did him no good sitting on the bench watching Bibby play point guard.

Luke Cage,
Nobody is saying that Teague won’t improve, we are talking about right now. TMac can still play the same amount of minutes, he just needs to be on the floor with the starters to handle the ball more, and keep it out of Josh’s hands. He also won’t feel like he has to defer to Josh like Teague and Marvin do. He will also take some of that pressure off of Joe, as teams will not leave him, like they do Marvin.

The coach is in charge, should be in charge, and the PF, while a captain, needs to be a supporter of the regime. If he isn’t he shouldn’t be a captain.
Going forward, if our PF would use all his energy on his game and not getting to know the backside of a ref, we might get better results.

whoa. Why does Blake Griffin push the ball in transition. He has Chris Paul?
Why no one ever makes excuses when we had Horford and Josh both pushing the ball?
Smith/Blake could wait to find the PG but then halfcourt defense is set. It confuses the defense if you can rebound and not wait for the offense.
It’s called early offense. Blake Griffin did it, Magic Johnson did it, Barkley did it, Jordan did it, Lebron does it. Heck even Duncan did it when he played PF with David Robinson. And these guys have better halfcourt post games than Josh and Horford.
Its called early offense and creates mismatches. If you want Smith in transition you should play him at the wing instead of Marvin. I still remember Marvin bricked a fast break dunk.
Hes bigger, slower and a worst ball handler yet we play him as a wing because hes too soft to play inside and rebound where Smith plays (PF/C).
IN THEORY If we switched Josh to the wing for transition points then Marvin would never get rebounds, get embarassed or throw out his back.
But Marvin is 245 and he cant guard Lavoy Allen or Thaddeus Young while Josh goes HAM on Iguodala? I know Coach Collins went with Hawes at PF for a few plays but he started a rookie.

Great posts in general by Rod and Ra’mon.
Don’t agree 100% but close.
Josh never had any decent coaching so he plays with fire but without discipline.
Without any good teachers you can’t expect miracles.
Also agreed that with Al, Marvin’s inability to affect the game beyond spot shooting is channeling defences towards JJ and resulting in worse shots and possessions by Josh.
Don’t necessarily agree that Hinrich is buried yet but he his getting way too many minutes given his current form. Pargo was doing fine and being aggressive on both ends. Not perfect but improving game to game IMO.
On JJ’s ISO – agree that he goes too much into that but I think he suffers from poor officiating like no other player in the league.
On Teague, he should be getting the rock always on fast breaks. Josh needs to understand that and go back to the basics: 3 lanes and a trailer is how you play a fast break.
On T-Mac starting: I would do it and on his absence I would split minutes between Green and Hinrich at the SG slot and start JJ at the SF.
Marvin could still get his 25 minutes backing up JJ and Josh and greeting his shots with the second unit.

Bottom line is Josh needs to keep his mouth shut. If not then maybe LD should take his place and let Josh be the coach. My biggest problem with J Smooth is he thinks he’s a point guard. For crying out loud I can’t understand for the life of me why this guy can’t get a rebound, give the ball to his point guard and run the floor. I am sick and tired of him dribbling the ball up the floor. If he doesn’t want to listen to you LD sit his but down and if that doesn’t work ship him out the door with his arrogant butt.

That’s what hurts this basketball team because when we are sharing the basketball, moving it from side to side, everybody is benefiting off goods shots,”
That makes sense to me too, thats why we dont want Jeff teague running the offense

Larry Drew is destroying this team. He has put in Kirk Hinrich in and taken Jeff Teague out and again, like last year, treating Teague like a step-child. I say again, I don’t like it, and the Hawks will continue to get embarrassed at home and as long as Drew makes these kinds of changes. Once upon a time, early in the season-they were on a roll. But as Hinrich’s injured shoulder healed, Larry thought it not robbery to focus on Teague’s mistakes-and then bench him-and then insert a chomping at the bit-Hinrich, who probably resented Teague’s success while he sat in street clothes-on the bench. Teague may be under contract, but he will never fully develop into the player he can be fooling around with these hapless Hawks. We got too many teams with birds anyway. ASG-sell the team and get out of the sports entertainment business.

The Suns outscored the Hawks 24-6 to end that quarter, playing zone almost the entire time.
The Hawks have two major assets they can use to combat a zone. They have a quick point guard who can get in the lane and force the zone to collapse, and they have two big men who are good at offensive rebounding.
Instead, they spend the majority of that time with the quick point guard giving it up and standing around, and the two big men on the bench.
What a pathetic coaching job by LD.

Larry Drew is a lame duck coach ! I absolutely hate the way he rotates players in and out of the lineup…What’s the point of having Tracy on the team If he’s going to play him 8 minutes and give him 2 shots…what’s the point in pointing in your bench when you’re down 20 freaking points!
I’m convinced that Joe Johnson and Josh Smith purposely break plays or that the only play LD calls are Isolation plays for Joe & Josh.
The Suns are 9-14…and the Hawks are getting embarrassed…

I have been watching this team for18 yrs since i moved from NY. We have a solid group of guys. We mirror image of the sixers. I.e. no top ten star. But we are solid. I am convinced our players are not being coached up. They are getting by on talent alone. We need a better coach. That is one of the reasons no one takes th Hawksserious as contenders. I would also suggest to Mr. Gearon that is why they have a hard time seloing tickets.
Fire LD and spend moneyon coach.

Josh Smith is so concern about making the All star team. The Hawks need to make a change either at head coach, players or both. We don’t need Dwight Howard particularly, but we do need to acquire a collection of players with a high basketball IQ and fighting spirit. This team wasn’t assembled correctly. At this point I would break up this team and build it around Jeff Teague. Don’t kid yourself people this team won’t make it pass the first round of the playoffs. I would try to gain as many first round picks as possible.

lol about half of the teams in the damn league make the playoffs in the NBA. Plenty of average and in the East’s case below average teams can make the playoffs. A slightly better than average to average team in the Hawks can look “good” as a 4 or 5 in the east. You cant compare making it to the playoffs in the NBA to making it in the NFL and MLB. The Falcons and Braves are chokers too, but still better than the Hawks.

LD is not a head coach in this league he’s just another over his head assistant coach who only got the job because Hawks management is too cheap or broke to seriously spend $$$ on a legitimate head coach. I’m sure LD is a nice guy but he doesn’t command the respect of his core players (Josh Smith, Joe Johnson)
At least Mike Woodson had the balls to call out his star players and didn’t care If they pouted on the bench. LD is like a bad parent who knows his child needs discipline but continues to do nothing to correct the behavior.
LD doesn’t have the coaching acumen to maximize this roster…Guys are lost and they don’t have any confidence in the offense schemes which is why you’re seeing all this ISO crap..guys don’t know when they are going to play or not play because LD doesn’t have a set rotation.
Again…dude subs players in and out like he’s playing 2k12…

No, they would have made it every year they were a top 6 seed, which is each of the last 3 years. The NFL lets 6 teams in from each conference. If the NBA switched to the NFL format, the Hawks would have still made it each of the last three years.

It’s not so much Kirk’s fault as it is LD’s fault. LD should have eased Kirk back into the rotation instead of just handing him Pargo’s minutes. In fact he handed Kirk more minutes than Pargo by screwing up his substitution pattern to get Kirk in the game too early every game.

I think its time for LD to shake things up…..I think they should start Tracy at the 3 and let him play a ” point forward ” type of a role. The ball moves better when Tracy is involved in the offense, he’s the Hawks best playmaker but LD is playing him totally wrong. Jeff Teague is not a passer..neither is Joe & josh…
The Hawks need more easy buckets early on instead of tough jumpshots..

No Crybaby, we probably “whine and complain” because we see the potential that our team has, but never see anything come to fruition. In 94, poised to meet with Houston in the Finals, we trade our star in Dominique for Danny Manning. Obviously, we get booted from the playoffs (as the #1 seed) in the 2nd round. We were able to survive for a while, but then mediocrity finally got its grips on the franchise. About 7-8 years ago, in desperate need of a PG and a C, we used all of our high draft picks on forwards. Now, still in desperate need of a C, our front office refuses to get one. We may complain in your perspective, but the team never drafted Dwight and Shaq, instead choosing Marvin, Shelden, and Childress over the likes of SEVERAL all-stars. That’s why we are mad that we have never won a championship. (like Orlando, BTW)

Hey, no problem, phil; I just think you’re giving us way too much credit–based on the team’s miserable playoff history since moving to ATL in the 60s.

doc,
Thanks again for the invite. Looks like I picked a good one to miss. I told Slim, that as much as I hate to say it, I hope the Hawks lose every game until Sund is forced to act.
I said 5-8 for Feb. but even that is looking dim. Oh well, at least we know that these guys always play better when we give up on them. Well, usually, not always, lol.

The REAL Problem
February 6th, 2012
10:45 pm
The value of Meruelo’s original deal to buy the team was estimated by sports-business experts in August at $300 million-plus Ð an amount based largely on the debt he was to assume or pay off.
Based on prior reports or court records, those debts included the approximately $120 million the Hawks borrowed last year from the NBA’s league-wide credit facility and the $40 million-plus owed to Turner Broadcasting/Time Warner, which financed part of its 2004 sale of the Hawks and Thrashers to Atlanta Spirit.
The debt to the NBA credit facility would transfer with the franchise to a new owner, while the debt to Turner/Time Warner, backed by Levenson and Peskowitz, likely would have to be paid off or renegotiated by a new owner.
Also, the Hawks remain responsible for debt payments on bonds that paid for the construction of Philips Arena. The $124 million left on those bonds was refinanced in August 2010, with the Spirit pledging Hawks and arena revenues, up to the maximum annual lease payment, as collateral.
In addition, the $300 million-plus price included the value of the minority stake that, under terms of the August agreement, was to be retained by Atlanta Spirit.

@drebaby I’m sorry about that sis, but the bottom line is, the Hawks core players ceiling is the second round playoff exit, because they don’t have a player who can post up and give the team easy baskets, when they need it. So when you make statements about all these non-factors, the facts are this team isn’t that good. That’s all I’m trying to say.

OFFENCE?
“what has gone wrong with our offence?”
-tb hawk fan i think-
___________
I guess this guy kicked Rosetta Stone to the curb and went to Pictionary School instead.
I imagine what’s wrong with our “off-ence” is, someone sat it on top “of (a) fence” and left it there. Like my Grandma always said, “If you see a turtle sitting on a fence … You know someone had to put it there.”
Maybe, “Your Baby Can Read” but can it spell without those flash cards?

Didn’t see the game tonight but looks like they put up anohter clunker.
The silver lining to this is that the team could tank it (as we all hope they will) and get a higher draft pick. Fire Larry Drew and bring in a coach that is not depressing every time he talks and knows what he’s doing. A Coach with some pedigree.
Draft a young SF/Power Forward (like Anthony Davis). Let Hinrich come off the books, look to trade at least one of the three Horford/Smith/Marvin and then Amnesty Joe Johnson. Trade Zaza. Resign T-Mac for one final year.
Teague, JJ, draft pick, Josh Smith, Free Agent Center/draft pick from trade/player from trade/ Ivan Johnson.
The fact is that the team has to be broken up. Can’t even beat the Suns at home. No pride, no heart. Al Horford and Joe Johnson for Dwight Howard rental. If he doesn’t sign long term….let him come off the books and have money available in free agency to get someone. If you can’t get anyone hold on to the money until next year.
