Atlanta Hawks: Good fit for Fesenko?

The Hawks plan to sign a center and it almost certainly will be a guy on a 10-day contract rather than a permanent addition. They’ve discussed Kyrylo Fesenko, Erick Dampier and Dan Gadzuric but, as far as I know, they haven’t inquired with those guys yet to gauge their interest in a short-term gig in Atlanta.

(Ravell Call, Deseret News)

(Ravell Call, Deseret News)

I’ve always thought Fesenko, the massive 7-foot Ukranian, is probably the best item in the Big Man Bargain Bin (excluding Joel Przybilla, who has eyes for the Heat or Bulls). But you figured something was up when the Warriors reportedly had an agreement with Fesenko in December but balked at signing him and then passed on him again after Kwame Brown went down last month. Word is the knee injury Fesenko suffered playing for the Ukraine last summer remains a concern; his conditioning and work ethic were suspect before he got hurt and so you have to wonder how much he can give.

But it might be worth it for the Hawks to find out on a 10-day because if Fesenko can give them 8-10 minutes a night he’s a good fit (and he’s only 24-years old, too, so Hawks could get a jump on looking ahead). Fesenko recorded amazing on-court, off-court defensive numbers in Utah: The Jazz allowed 11.91 fewer points per 100 possessions in 2010-11 with Fesenko and 8.68 points fewer in 2009-10 according to basketballvalue.com. Synergy Sports Technology ranked Fesenko ninth in the league in 2010-11 with .71 points per possession allowed (on just 93 possessions used in 53 games, but still). And 82games. com had Fesenko’s opposing PER at 10.4 last season and 12.9 in 2009-10.

In other words, Fesenko has provided an even better Twin Effect than Jason Collins with better rebound and blocks rates (and, to be sure, lots and lots of fouls). Fesenko offers next to nothing offensively but he’s got Twin beat there, too, in large part because he can score on putbacks–1 point per possession on offensive rebounds last season, according to Synergy.

Finally, from my selfish perspective, bringing in Fesenko would at least add some intrigue for the Hawks. Don’t get me wrong: It’s been fun to see Ivan Johnson defying the odds to become a bona fide rotation player. But wouldn’t it be even cooler to see a giant Ukranian taking on Roy Hibbert and Dwight Howard this week?

Carried over from the last blog

Big Ray Co-signed with both of your posts.

Just so trolls understand I’m not Big Ray just to clear that up.

Okay for everyone trying to throw out these trade ideas. Like for a Dwight or Kaman or even Mcgee I’ve done that myself recently.

IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

ASKG and Sund plus Joe have set us back many years.

We paid someone Batman money and yet he’s not even a Robin no he’s the butler yes that guy. We have 3 team leaders the only team in the NBA that does, and guess what. Neither one of them is a true leader.

Josh Smith he’ll parade around if we win that we the best ever, but once the tough get going he turns into a sissy yes I’m actually going to call the guy out. He tries to act like he has a J he doesn’t he just gets lucky. 2-11 are you serious 2 for 11 I thought this guy was the one saying he was tried of being the lighting rod well guess what Josh ya F***tard playing like that makes you the lighting rod.

Al Horford – Just like others have said this guy lost his balls somewhere after that 2008 playoff series and we also truly saw Hoford for what he really was just this past playoff series. He’s just one of those people that complain and complain and complain until there is no where left to turn. He is someone that needs to look into the mirror and ask himself WTF happen to the Warrior from 08. I honestly think the Real PF’s punked him out Pau, Amare, Bosh, and Garnett probably even Love all punked him.

Joe Johnson what else is there to be said about this guy we were scared to let him go two years ago, but yet come to find out probably would have been better off. Like I said he’s not even Robin don’t disrespect robin like that he’d at least try to help Batman.

Marvin it’s over sweetheart you are officially a bust that’s just all there is to it. The best Marvin could hope for from here on out is playing probably a 6th man role cause he’s not a starter he’s a super sub that’s playing as a starter.

Honestly it’s really the saddest when a Rookie not really a true rookie if you count his age, but still rookie none the less has 100x more heart, pride, and soul than the rest of the team.

I vote for 9 to 5 being the new leader and the only leader on this team if anything.

Considering the fact that Twin doesnt play much, why didnt the Hawks start bringing in guys for 10 day contracts when Horford went down?

This is unexcusable. Dampier, DJ Mbenga, Fesenko, Gadzuric have all been out there. We should have brought them in for 10 day auditions 3 weeks ago.

Rick Sund drafted Robert Swift with the #12 pick in 2004. And then he drafted Johan Petro with the 25th pick in 2005, and then he drafted Saer Sene with the 10th pick in 2006. So I am not surprised he doesn’t know what to do when it comes to finding a decent big.

doc,

I wish ‘osh would follow Ivan’s lead when it comes to shot selection.

And 7 years later, we are still waiting for him to get “it” for an entire season. he’ll go on a tear for a week or 2, and then go back to bad ‘osh for a week or 2. Then he’ll dominate, and then revert back to old habits.

The Hawks obviously need to do something. Before the Memphis game I thought….”wow, this Hawks team might actually be the best team since the Linny Wilkins era”. “If they can win 7 of there next 10….they will prove to me that they could be a real force in the east”. “Those next 10 games are against tough opponents.”

Well, they are now 0-2 to start those 10 games with both of those losses being much worse than the score indicates. And its ths same old thing. They give up! No player leadership. When they face adversity…they go into a shell. J Smith and J Johnson should be the leaders of this team and they seem to go into hibernation when they are needed the most.

As for getting a center….I think its a great idea. Zaza is excellent as a backup but I dont know about him being a solid player while logging a lot of playing time. And….moving Al to the 4 when he comes back will be a real plus.

Big ray,

JJ is not even an 18-3-3 player consistently.

In our 8 losses, these were his points scored. 15, 10, 20, 15, 8, 10, 10, 16. That is an average of 13 ppg. Against teams above .500, JJ struggles.

He feasts on bad teams, but that is not why we gave him 6 years, $124 mil. He needs to step up in these games. But instead, like the rest of the team, he is very inconsistent.

It’s one thing to dominate Milwaukee, and Detroit etc. It’s another thing to play well against the Spurs, Griz, Sixers etc. And JJ has not done that enough.

Northcyde,

What’s up with your boy?

o’b i have a theory that osh doesnt have the stamina to do his magic all the time and his motor just gets low. he has a hard lke pacing himself and may just reach exhaution level requiring a need to take plays off like every other player does umm like jj. i think both of those guys are at a nadir now energy wise.

in josh because his motor is mainly all he has, it is more apparent. he just aint smmmmoo at all. that is not his mo it should be slam and stick with that as he could control energy output. he doesnt pick his spots well as ivan has a greater sense for the ball right now than any hawk.

O'Brien

in those 8 losses, he averaged 3.8 assists, and 3.4 rebs, so it’s not like he is having a big impact in those games.

In the 3 wins against teams above .500, JJ averaged 21, 5, and 4. Those are the numbers he needs to put up when we go up against these good teams.

doc,

I think another one of Josh’s problems is mental. His biggest issues (imo) are mental. And therefore, it’s hard to be under control mentally all the time.

He has the talent, the skill, the determination, motivation etc. but mentally, he is very inconsistent, and that throws him off his game.

Marvin is awful, Tmac should be starting not only that he will create easy basket for Josh in the post, Marvin have been starting his hole career and never ever create easy basket for others, this is the biggest issue at SF.

I attempted to post last eve …..
something similar to what I’m about to say.

Josh is overrated as a defensive stalwart.
Yes, he blocks shots;
fewer than he used to block, last night notwithstanding.
Josh is unsound fundamentally on his def principles.
*turns his head & fails to see the ball
*he actually is a poor help defender due to being out of position
*blocking shots erases his mistakes
*very poor post defender
*actually pretty good on ball wing defender [3]
*pouts and is late arriving on defense
*gambles for steals / takes himself out of position
*teammates must cover ‘`his`’ mistakes:
putting pressure on the overall team defense.

Yes, I’m becoming more and more disenchanted with Josh !

Trade him now; while everyone considers him an All-Star !
_____________________________________________

In the last two games Joe has reverted to his old habits and has
retarded the offense.
Joe must realize he is a better player when staying within
the Team [offense] concept.

Not slamming Joe – yet – only an observation.

* [also from last blog]

Big Ray
I agree on all points.
Although, with some trepidation on slamming LD.
I see growth in LD this year.
Yes, he needs to grow a pair.
Your most important point;
‘`he wants his paycheck`’ … [he might *need that paycheck]
Any Coach cannot coach with the restraint of wanting
or needing his job so badly that they cannot afford to lose it for
$, love, fear, or any other reason.
One has to Coach with a Bob Knight attitude;
When my time on earth is gone, and my activities here have passed,
I want they bury me upside down, and my critics can kiss my ass !
The other evening northcyde even suggested;
Ld had a responsibility to the paying customer;
that he should not yank a player for “discipline” [Josh]
due to the fact that people had paid to come see him play;
Further suggesting that this was not HS nor college.
Later, nc, suggests LD was coaching scared ?
disclaimer – This is not a rip northcyde post !
I’m only using this as an example of the incongruity of perceptions
people have of coaches and their decisions.
Big Ray – remember – I said I agree on all your points !
My greater point is LD is growing, yes on the job;
[a highly paid internship]
while the time to part with Josh smith is * Immediate *
due to the fact that, if anything, Josh is ‘`Benjamin Button`’ !
