Sixers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
6:45 pm February 4, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- The Hawks said Jason Collins will miss at least two weeks with what they said is a sprained left elbow. Elton Brand (thumb) is out for the Sixers. Spencer Hawes (Achilles) will play.
- Collins is glad his injury wasn’t worse: “I didn’t break it, didn’t dislocate it. We will look at it in two weeks and be re-evaluated.”
- There are different degrees of sprains, which also can mean torn ligaments, but neither Collins nor Larry Drew would get into the details of Twin’s diagnosis. “They said for me to say a sprain,” Collins said.
- Drew said the Hawks are looking at candidates to sign to a 10-day contract. “It’s possible,” he said. “We met yesterday and talked about it and tossed some names around. We will keep doing that until we make a decision what we want to do.”
- Available free-agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, DJ Mbenga, and Joel Przybilla (who appears headed to Miami or Chicago). Theo Ratliff says he’s done.
- For now, the Hawks will use forward Ivan Johnson to back up Zaza Pachulia. Drew said Josh Smith also will play minutes at center while Vladimir Radmanoivic and Marvin Williams could see time at power forward. “We will be moving people around, without a doubt,” Drew said. “Game-to-game we will just have to look at the matchups and see what makes sense where we are not putting ourselves at a disadvantage.”
- Josh on losing another big man: “I guess we’ve just we’ve got to roll with the punches. In this short season when you look around the league every team has had a significant injury. We are limited at the big position. I will have to play some minutes at the five position. We just have to man up and not worry about it and just step in and be there for each other.”
- Joe Johnson: “We ain’t got no choice, man. We’ve got to step up and try to do something a little different. With the way the season is, it’s going to be somebody dropping different every week in the league. We have got to do whatever we can to stay as healthy as we can. We have got to keep rolling with that we’ve got. Somebody has got to step up and fill that void.”

Put in Radmanovic amd let him hit some 3s, a to spread out the defense, so that Josh can do his work down low.

Bringing Mcgrady in for Teague and Zaza in for Ivan killed us at the end of the third. Two horrible substitutions by LD.

When I say the hawks make changes talking about more than just player changes and Arthur Blank ain’t scared of the players to make them GTFO!
Lofton, Turner, and Ryan
May not be the Top players, but they are up there whether you like it or not. Matt Ryan may not have the biggest arm, but he’s more accurate then most QB’s.
As for the Hawks come next year still be All-NBA Al, JJ, Marvin, and Josh plus some other filler that will get us to the ECF or so what is said every year.

“That’s fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Hawks have accomplished a lot more than the Falcons have under their current regimes.”
And what have they accomplished? Beating the wack Bucks? Wade and a bunch of Tito Jacksons? Lifeless Magic?

Najeh…
Again, you’re comparing a Hawks team that’s been together for how long to a Falcons organization that’s been at it for 4 years?
They’ve overhauled the entire roster and within a 3-4 year span, are positioned to be a contender for the forseeable future.
The Hawks ‘core’ has been together for at least 6-7 years. It took them a good while before they even squeaked into the playoffs.
Since squeaking in, they’ve gotten no further than the Falcons did last season when they got that 1st round bye. Both teams essentially have made it to round 2 in their respective sports.

Don’t think Joe has come off a screen for a catch and shoot since the 2nd quarter, even though that was the Hawks’ most successful half court play in the first half.

5-8 sounds reasonable. I thought you were too conservative but after these past 7 quarters you were right on the mark…..
I and others were smitten by the soft schedule, but now the real Hawks have been exposed once the schedule toughened up!

“are positioned to be a contender for the forseeable future.”
Are they? Their two best defensive players are free agents, their QB is no better than the 3rd best in his own division, their RB is declining and doesn’t play on 3rd down, their offense gets worse when they open it up despite the league as a whole becoming a more pass-heavy league, and they don’t even have many draft picks in this draft to replenish the talent on the team.
Y’all have a much higher opinion of the Falcons than they deserve.

The playoff wins will come.

“t-mac and kirk are giving away a lot of easy points”
“As good as the Hawks’ bench has been, the lack of a perimeter defender on the bench has killed the Hawks the last two games”
Actually, I was thinking of the 3 missed 3pt and two poor drives by t-mac and kirk on the offensive side of the floor. They could have cut the lead to the mid single digits before the 76ers went on their run.

Neither have the Falcons.
All I said (on the Falcons fan blog) was that the Hawks were the best team in Atlanta. Big Ray called me out for it there and called me out for it again earlier on this blog, which is why I’m defending that position. Like someone said earlier, being the best team in Atlanta is like being the world’s tallest midget, and I agree.

I would love to know how thick is LD playbook ? Seriously…you mean to tell me he couldn’t draw a play 2 quarter back to get Josh Smith some easy buckets ? Now he’s hoping that Vlad can catch fire with a few 3’s yet he hasn’t played him the entire game ?

As if that’s something to be proud of.
Another reason the city’s pro teams have a loser mentality is because their fans are satisfied with–and even defensive of–MEDIOCRITY.

Najeh,
The only reason I have confidence in the Falcons is because of the owner Arthur Blank. If the team does not improve next year, I think the HC is gone. And the year after that, the GM is gone.
Arthur is not afraid to spend $, and make changes.

Apparently you have some reading comprehension problems. I don’t accept either team’s mediocrity. I am just perplexed as to why the Falcons’ mediocrity is accepted by the media and the fan base, while the Hawks are treated like the non-contenders that they are, despite the Hawks having accomplished more than the Falcons.

In the Next 5 years
My bet is on the Falcons
The Hawks have had 6-7 years with this regime to do anything like just get past the second round. Every year the stumbled onto a struggling first round team except that first year they got back into the playoffs.

Ryan is a top 10 QB. Yes Baker and Jerry were flat out inexcusable picks which I have yet to hear him explain or defend, but overall he has done an above average job.
The main reason why is because D. Orlando Ledbetter is the worst beat writer in all of sports and has no clue what he is doing. The fact that he is a Hall of Fame voter made me lose what little respect I had for the Hall of Fame to begin with. The AJC needs to fire his arse, but of course are just as stupid as he is and allow his terrible coverage to continue. The guy is borderline retarded.
