Sixers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • The Hawks said Jason Collins will miss at least two weeks with what they said is a sprained left elbow. Elton Brand (thumb) is out for the Sixers. Spencer Hawes (Achilles) will play.
  • Collins is glad his injury wasn’t worse: “I didn’t break it, didn’t dislocate it. We will look at it in two weeks and be re-evaluated.”
  • There are different degrees of sprains, which also can mean torn ligaments, but neither Collins nor Larry Drew would get into the details of Twin’s diagnosis. “They said for me to say a sprain,” Collins said.
  • Drew said the Hawks are looking at candidates to sign to a 10-day contract. “It’s possible,” he said. “We met yesterday and talked about it and tossed some names around. We will keep doing that until we make a decision what we want to do.”
  • Available free-agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, DJ Mbenga, and Joel Przybilla (who appears headed to Miami or Chicago). Theo Ratliff says he’s done.
  • For now, the Hawks will use forward Ivan Johnson to back up Zaza Pachulia. Drew said Josh Smith also will play minutes at center while Vladimir Radmanoivic and Marvin Williams could see time at power forward. “We will be moving people around, without a doubt,” Drew said. “Game-to-game we will just have to look at the matchups and see what makes sense where we are not putting ourselves at a disadvantage.”
  • Josh on losing another big man: “I guess we’ve just we’ve got to roll with the punches. In this short season when you look around the league every team has had a significant injury. We are limited at the big position. I will have to play some minutes at the five position. We just have to man up and not worry about it and just step in and be there for each other.”
  • Joe Johnson: “We ain’t got no choice, man. We’ve got to step up and try to do something a little different. With the way the season is, it’s going to be somebody dropping different every week in the league. We have got to do whatever we can to stay as healthy as we can. We have got to keep rolling with that we’ve got. Somebody has got to step up and fill that void.”

When do you think Josh Smith will stop shooting jumpers…..I say he’s 0 for 7 at the moment my guess is 2 for 15 and he won’t stop. He really hurts the HAWKS.

Classic Hawks…

Josh Smith airballing 5 times to go 0-7 from the field, stops hustling, and walks around with that “who just farted?” look.

Joe trying to do too much, cant make every shot when his bum teammates go 2 for 50 from the field.

ZaZa looking lost as always against better teams, he can stroke it against the Bobcats, but as soon as Philly or Memphis come into town and he turns into the bumbling idiot. Dribbling balls off his foot, getting beat on the boards, getting beat in the paint, and just really looking like a mediocre backup against better teams.

Teague….Lets put out an MIA notice on this guy with the APD. He has straight dissapeared, and so has his passion. Looks like Mick Jagger on heroin dribbling the ball up the court…come on man, the team goes with you and this is the effort you bring to big games?

Marvin…inconsistent as always, enough said.

Larry Drew….more questionable moves. T-mac is balling and you take him out after 5 minutes of play…Ivan gets like 8 minutes the whole half, after dominating those 8 minutes (6 points, 8 rebounds).

The only positive guy playing with ANY heart is Ivan. Yeoman’s work son…

The Sixers are not winning because of talent. They are winning because of aggressiveness. They are a team full of Tony Allens. When you are constantly playing physical and trying to disrupt passes and get your hands on loose balls, you force the turnovers and bad possessions that are currently the difference in this game.

The thing is, the Hawks have the personnel to play that way, but they just don’t.

They need to BEG the HORNETS for KAMAN. He can’t be worst than ZAZA. At least LD would have to play him. Please New Orleans, place him back on the trade block. We will give you Josh and Marvin.

I agree Crazy 88, go all in.

Teague, T-Mac, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Ivan Johnson for the rest of the half. Playing time is not guaranteed…it’s earned. Use timeouts to get them some breathers.

Has anyone noticed that ever since Hinrich came back we’ve been a sorry basketball team???? Or is it just me.=?

2 boards in 15 minutes from the “best backup center in the league” who stood under the basket while at least 3 different Sixers made uncontested layups.

Do you think the Atlanta Hawks organization could put a shock collar on Josh Smith’s wrist so that every time he shoots a jumper he would get a shock equivalent to a low-caliber taser? Enough not to cripple him for more than a couple of minutes, but enough for him to realize he needs to NEVER shoot a jumpshot again?

It’s not just you. He’s getting too many minutes and shouldn’t be playing point guard full time.

Hawks players have officially given up on Larry Drew and the Hawks organization until they get serious about winning and sign a legitimate Center!!! They are unhappy with management about not wanting to win championships. They are 30 years behind of what the fans already know.

@Davenpoop:

You can’t compare the Falcons and Hawks. Multiple 7 game series are bound to result in some wins and you cannot compare that to the NFL’s one and done format. Despite the Falcons’ lack of success in the playoffs thus far, I am far more confident that they are closer to competing for a title than the Hawks are as presently constituted.

“You can’t compare the Falcons and Hawks. Multiple 7 game series are bound to result in some wins and you cannot compare that to the NFL’s one and done format.”

This makes absolutely no sense. An underdog is much less likely to win a 7 game basketball series than a one-and-done football game. The Falcons had the better record in each of their playoff matchups and they got blown out in all three. Are you saying they merely got unlucky each time?
