Sixers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread

  • The Hawks said Jason Collins will miss at least two weeks with what they said is a sprained left elbow. Elton Brand (thumb) is out for the Sixers. Spencer Hawes (Achilles) will play.
  • Collins is glad his injury wasn’t worse: “I didn’t break it, didn’t dislocate it. We will look at it in two weeks and be re-evaluated.”
  • There are different degrees of sprains, which also can mean torn ligaments, but neither Collins nor Larry Drew would get into the details of Twin’s diagnosis. “They said for me to say a sprain,” Collins said.
  • Drew said the Hawks are looking at candidates to sign to a 10-day contract. “It’s possible,” he said. “We met yesterday and talked about it and tossed some names around. We will keep doing that until we make a decision what we want to do.”
  • Available free-agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, DJ Mbenga, and Joel Przybilla (who appears headed to Miami or Chicago). Theo Ratliff says he’s done.
  • For now, the Hawks will use forward Ivan Johnson to back up Zaza Pachulia. Drew said Josh Smith also will play minutes at center while Vladimir Radmanoivic and Marvin Williams could see time at power forward. “We will be moving people around, without a doubt,” Drew said. “Game-to-game we will just have to look at the matchups and see what makes sense where we are not putting ourselves at a disadvantage.”
  • Josh on losing another big man: “I guess we’ve just we’ve got to roll with the punches. In this short season when you look around the league every team has had a significant injury. We are limited at the big position. I will have to play some minutes at the five position. We just have to man up and not worry about it and just step in and be there for each other.”
  • Joe Johnson: “We ain’t got no choice, man. We’ve got to step up and try to do something a little different. With the way the season is, it’s going to be somebody dropping different every week in the league. We have got to do whatever we can to stay as healthy as we can. We have got to keep rolling with that we’ve got. Somebody has got to step up and fill that void.”

Zaza isn’t really an awful player. But you put him in the wrong situations, and he looks that way. He can’t finish on the break in traffic – Josh can, and is (or at least was) one of the League’s best at it. However, Josh running the break and Zaza being the finisher in traffic is a miracle if it works and a disaster in most cases.

Nique said having a big guy step out and make shots is a luxury. hell a big guy is a luxury for the Hawks. lol

Yes a luxury tax. We need to be smart. Besides Combo guard is what we need anyway i would go over the luxury tax only to add to our swingguard/combo guard depth

Don’t blame it on the players. It’s the coaches job to runnplaus that take advantage of the mismatches. They barely took advantage of the mismatch of Josh against the Grizzles. Stupid coaching.

Josh won’t reach his potential until he’s traded. I guarantee his next coach won’t put up with this garbage. But since he is here and has people pumping his head up, he does what he wants and gets away with it.

That is such a pointless stat. Of course if your go-to option on offense scores a lot of points, you are going to have a better chance to win the game.

Of course this team keeps leaving Jodie Meeks open after he hit like 8 3’s against them in the first game.

“And I’ll go on record to say that Josh Smith has a MONSTER game tonight.”

So far, at least on offense, he looks pretty terrible. He’s made a few good defensive plays though.

Teague wasn’t playing particularly well, but I’d be very surprised if Kirk manages to do anything more than brick mid range shots and get burned by Holiday off the dribble.

Good pass Josh. More importantly, good job by Ivan staying near the basket, which is something nobody else on this team does when they don’t have the ball.
