Sixers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
6:45 pm February 4, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- The Hawks said Jason Collins will miss at least two weeks with what they said is a sprained left elbow. Elton Brand (thumb) is out for the Sixers. Spencer Hawes (Achilles) will play.
- Collins is glad his injury wasn’t worse: “I didn’t break it, didn’t dislocate it. We will look at it in two weeks and be re-evaluated.”
- There are different degrees of sprains, which also can mean torn ligaments, but neither Collins nor Larry Drew would get into the details of Twin’s diagnosis. “They said for me to say a sprain,” Collins said.
- Drew said the Hawks are looking at candidates to sign to a 10-day contract. “It’s possible,” he said. “We met yesterday and talked about it and tossed some names around. We will keep doing that until we make a decision what we want to do.”
- Available free-agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, DJ Mbenga, and Joel Przybilla (who appears headed to Miami or Chicago). Theo Ratliff says he’s done.
- For now, the Hawks will use forward Ivan Johnson to back up Zaza Pachulia. Drew said Josh Smith also will play minutes at center while Vladimir Radmanoivic and Marvin Williams could see time at power forward. “We will be moving people around, without a doubt,” Drew said. “Game-to-game we will just have to look at the matchups and see what makes sense where we are not putting ourselves at a disadvantage.”
- Josh on losing another big man: “I guess we’ve just we’ve got to roll with the punches. In this short season when you look around the league every team has had a significant injury. We are limited at the big position. I will have to play some minutes at the five position. We just have to man up and not worry about it and just step in and be there for each other.”
- Joe Johnson: “We ain’t got no choice, man. We’ve got to step up and try to do something a little different. With the way the season is, it’s going to be somebody dropping different every week in the league. We have got to do whatever we can to stay as healthy as we can. We have got to keep rolling with that we’ve got. Somebody has got to step up and fill that void.”

The weakest argument in the book is to call anyone who disagrees with you a hater.”
Don’t bother. Your arguments and ‘facts’ that you have given has shown me how much of a Falcon’s fan you are. You are the King of the Hawks blog, either than Big Ray. Yet, your bias in football makes you look really bad. Gnight all.

“17 interceptions is not acceptable!”
Eli Manning threw 16 picks this year and he’s starting in the Super Bowl.
Interceptions is one stat. Newton being below average in that doesn’t singlehandedly outweigh him being Pro Bowl caliber in every other stat.

Blank shooting Blanks!
Blame everybody else but Ryan for his noodle arm and very poor pocket awareness…….
You had 3 years to watch how teams exploit his weakness…Especially in the playoffs…Just brutal to watch Joey 2.0!
Somebody look up his record over the last 3 regular seasons against the winners..He’s something like 2-9 last 11 games against teams above .500.. Absolutely pathetic!
And that game against the Giants in the playoffs was indescribable…A complete meltdown like Millions of football fans have ever witnessed! Surreal it was………… Blah Blah blah…..Yawn….
If Vick put up those kinds of stats I would lite him up too….
Up next 0-4……..Yawn……………………..

Being a fan doesn’t mean you have to be a sheep. If that was the case I wouldn’t be hating on the DASG all the time. Criticizing your team doesn’t make you any less of a fan. Otherwise, I’d be sitting here saying Joe is better than Kobe, Josh is better than Blake Griffin, LD is the next Phil Jackson, etc.

@Crazy_88
The Atlanta Hawks can beat Philly in a series though mainly because we have too many mismatches for Philly. They play those guards to death but as you saw in the last 15 minutes of this game, the Hawks can crank up the intensity and force them into tough situations. Overall it was too little too late but in the playoffs the Hawks will have more urgency.
The Hawks can also beat the Pacers in a series….Bulls too because they really have only 1 guy. The Hawks don’t want to play Miami or the Celtics so a 3,4,5 seed is what they are playing for.

“Sanchez had 26 and 18 interceptions, and Matt Ryan had 29 and 12 interceptions. You sir, FAIL.”
You know that rushing stats also count, right? Sanchez had 6 rushing TDs this year. Ryan had 2. Add them up, and Sanchez had 32 TDs, Ryan 31.
TDs are overrated as an individual stat. They are entirely a product of team usage and play calling.

No. I agree. Yet, throwing up bogus stats about Mark Sanchez(who has less touchdowns and more interceptions then Matt Ryan by the way) to prove a point shows me that you will change anything around to make you right. Which in turn, shows me that you are being objective and downright ludicrous.

Sanchez has 32 TDs, Ryan has 31. Rushing stats count just the same as passing stats.

Rushing touchdowns do not count in REAL QB touchdowns. Only pass touchdowns thrown. Stop skewing the stats. This isn’t fantasy football.

We’ve followed the Falcons all the way to the bitter end of the season and into the playoffs, only to be disapointed. But at least the owner and the coaches and the GM were trying to explain to the media (fans represented)_the changes that are going to take place. In the case of the Hawks-they need to continue to look for a buyer and take this sinking ship out of Atlanta. If the Hawk make the playoffs, then look for them to repeat the same type of play. Larry Drew hasn’t learned anything from last season as a rookie coach and he doing things like benching Teague-and putting his confidence at risk. Teague was the high scorer in the Philly game and continue to show promise. I don’t like what Drew is doing. Management is so boneheaded and uninvolved with this team, that it will let him get away with these types of stupid decisions. Hawks management isn’t on any level-able to communicate with the fans in this city, their intention of doing anything, other than hoping, that this Hawks team can make it to the playoffs. Now that their center position is out for the season, their weakness is on display for all the NBA to see. Now, teams will take advantage of that and the Hawk will be headed to a losing streak that will take them to 500 and they’ll be fighting for an 8th seed.

In any case this is pointless because the whole point of even bringing up Sanchez was to show that TDs are overrated. You are taking a stat I used, misinterpreting it, and applying it to an argument I didn’t even make. Sanchez has a lot of TDs because they call sneaks on the goal line and throw fades to Burress instead of running it in with Shonn Greene and Tomlinson. I don’t think Sanchez is better than Ryan by a long shot, so who cares.

It’s time to break up this team. They need to get cap space and draft picks. This team has met its ceiling. The 76er’s, Pacers and Bulls have all passed the Hawks. So I would build a team around Jeff Teague and Al Horford. The hawks could draft a low post player like Jared Sullinger, a shooter like John Jenkins and a scorer like William Buford. This team wasn’t put together properly.

Josh needs to put in some extra time in practice and get that lefty hook in the post working again. The big man depth is still the biggest problem for this team, but another problem that has shown up in the last couple of games is that the Hawks often can’t get reliable offense from anyone. They went through a few stretches today when they were bricking very makeable rhythm shots.
On nights like this when hot and cold players like Willie Green and Vlad are off, the Hawks need their “new big 3″ to step up, and 2/11 is not good enough from Josh. Missing jumpers is bad enough, but it’s worse to me if he is missing shots in the post or near the basket, because without a post threat the Hawks become very predictable offensively.

Zaza is not able to handle the role he has been given. Marvin is barely a SF, much less standing in for a stint at PF.

yodaddybrother.
The Hawks cant beat the Sixers or the Pacers. Its time to blow it up. this is how basketball works, when teams like the Sixers and Pacers start to own you, then you have done all you can. You are done.
Yes the Hawks can play with the Heat and Bulls, but they cant play against teams that are more younger and more physical than they are. The Sixers and Pacers give the Hawks fits.
Then next thing: They will always suck, cause of management and the personnel they have. this is NOT a championship caliber team. A few reasons why:
Josh Smith is a a whining brat that is NOT mature enough to lead a team.
Joe Johnson is not the guy to lead a team.
Larry Drew is a terrible IN GAME manager and he will continue to get abused by the leagues better coaches and will coninue to kiss Josh Smiths Azzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
NOW THE REAL HAWKS ARE SHOWING UP FOLKS. THE QUITTERS THEY ARE KNOWN FOR. THE ONES CHARLES BARKLEY TALKED ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO.
The worst management in the NBA in 40 years. Everybody in the world knows they need a center but Sund and company are gonna use Ivan Johnson. Are you serious?????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
