Sixers at Atlanta Hawks: Game thread
6:45 pm February 4, 2012, by Michael Cunningham
- The Hawks said Jason Collins will miss at least two weeks with what they said is a sprained left elbow. Elton Brand (thumb) is out for the Sixers. Spencer Hawes (Achilles) will play.
- Collins is glad his injury wasn’t worse: “I didn’t break it, didn’t dislocate it. We will look at it in two weeks and be re-evaluated.”
- There are different degrees of sprains, which also can mean torn ligaments, but neither Collins nor Larry Drew would get into the details of Twin’s diagnosis. “They said for me to say a sprain,” Collins said.
- Drew said the Hawks are looking at candidates to sign to a 10-day contract. “It’s possible,” he said. “We met yesterday and talked about it and tossed some names around. We will keep doing that until we make a decision what we want to do.”
- Available free-agent centers include Erick Dampier, Kyrylo Fesenko, Dan Gadzuric, DJ Mbenga, and Joel Przybilla (who appears headed to Miami or Chicago). Theo Ratliff says he’s done.
- For now, the Hawks will use forward Ivan Johnson to back up Zaza Pachulia. Drew said Josh Smith also will play minutes at center while Vladimir Radmanoivic and Marvin Williams could see time at power forward. “We will be moving people around, without a doubt,” Drew said. “Game-to-game we will just have to look at the matchups and see what makes sense where we are not putting ourselves at a disadvantage.”
- Josh on losing another big man: “I guess we’ve just we’ve got to roll with the punches. In this short season when you look around the league every team has had a significant injury. We are limited at the big position. I will have to play some minutes at the five position. We just have to man up and not worry about it and just step in and be there for each other.”
- Joe Johnson: “We ain’t got no choice, man. We’ve got to step up and try to do something a little different. With the way the season is, it’s going to be somebody dropping different every week in the league. We have got to do whatever we can to stay as healthy as we can. We have got to keep rolling with that we’ve got. Somebody has got to step up and fill that void.”

We can still win just hope Drew doesn’t snatch Teague early for Hinrich!
if anything I would use hinrich to sub for Joe and bring Pargo in for jeff! But never fails Marvin will leave first the Jeff and Joe will play whole 1st two qtrs no matter if hes hot or not! Jeff could score 6 straight times and Coach would still stick to same sub pattern!

Someone tell the Three Stooges — Drew, Sund, Gearon — to get some 7 ft bodies in here before someone else goes down.

Need to get up on these guys early. They got beat down by the Heat last night. We need to keep them demoralized.

“MC: when can we get another 6-7 swingman? We need to trade for a 6-7 swingman and i hope we draft swingmen with both our draft picks. We are very vulnerable at the swing guard position and need to bolster that position.”
LMAO!
Yea make sure LD puts him in the middle? The next Chuck Hayes?

Nobody on this Sixers team is good enough in the post to where the Hawks need to be double teaming and leaving people open for jumpers.

Slimjr,
I agree, if Zaza gets into foul trouble it will get ugly. I am wondering what will happen before the Orlando game, we can not go against Howard with this few bigs.

Now that was a bailout, but it was an example of stupid basketball.
Josh should have let Teague bring the ball up while he filled the wing.
Instead, Josh brings the ball up, and he passes off to one of our worst finishers in Zaza.
Stuff like this makes me mad at Josh, and just plain disgusted with Larry Drew, who should be all over somebody’s case for it.
But it will do no good….because these guys aren’t going to listen to a joke of a coach.

Actually, Drew might have been credible as a head coach…if he hadn’t gotten promoted at the behest of the players, whom Gearon listens to more than he does his own GM. Just ask Billy Knight what that’s like…
