Collins has MRI, won’t play Saturday vs. 76ers

Hawks center Jason Collins had an MRI on his sprained left elbow Friday. While the team waits for the results, coach Larry Drew ruled Collins out for Saturday’s home game against the 76ers.

It also appears that one possibility for big man help – free agent Kenyon Martin – won’t be joining the Hawks.

“He won’t be ready tomorrow, that’s for sure,” Drew said of Collins. “Hopefully he won’t be out too long because right now we are looking at Zaza [Pachulia] as our 5 and Ivan Johnson as our backup 5. We are a little depleted in the big man area. Hopefully he won’t be gone too long.”

Collins did not practice Friday. However, it did arrive at the arena as practice was ending. He said he felt “better.”

Collins was injured in the first quarter of Thursday’s blowout loss to the Grizzlies. His left arm was pinned under the Grizzlies’ Dante Cunningham while on the floor after a loose ball.

The injury leaves the Hawks with only one center in Pachulia. Johnson was forced to backup at the position Thursday, especially after Pachulia picked up his second foul in the first quarter. Johnson had difficulty guarding the Grizzlies’ 7-foot-1 Marc Gasol. Memphis ended up with 58 points in the paint.

“I’ve got to be smarter and do a better job of not picking up cheap fouls,” Pachulia said. “The second foul I could have easily used my body to challenge [Rudy] Gay’s shot. I’m going to try to be more careful next game. I’m not going to try to save the fouls. When I need to take a foul, of course I’m a big man I will, especially with Jason down. Now, I’ve got to be more careful and take the foul only when I need to.”

The Hawks will have to step up their on-going search for a center which began when they lost starter Al Horford to a torn pectoral muscle.

The Hawks met with a representative for Martin on Thursday. However according to a Los Angeles Times report, Martin has agreed to a deal with the Clippers. He is currently playing in China.

“It hasn’t been a secret we’ve been looking at some guys,” Drew said. “When Al went down we began our search. We had a list of names we were looking at. The search is going to have to continue now [with the loss of Collins].”

Kenyon Martin signs with the Clippers…how surprising (sarcasm) Chris Paul,, Chanucey Billups, Caron Butler, Blake Griffin, Deandre Jordan….Martin wont have to worry about playing the Center position and he will get many opportunities to score on the second unit…

We continue to go after guys that dont want to be here, If we even had dwight this organization would run him into the ground until there was nothing left of him!!!! we probably wait 2 -3 years to get him a back up center….

other teams they see a hole they fill it, we fill holes thats already filled Hinrich/teague
and yea teauge was good before the playoffs, if you watch every game like me you would know when the bibby trade went down he got more playing time and he played goood!!!!!

Sun’s,Warriors, Nuggets, Celtics all on the road etc… you think he just magically starting playing well in the playoffs against the MVP!!!

Why does Drew like to bully Jeff Teague when everybody else on the team gets away with sloppy play/murder with no repercussions ? He is so quick to yank Teague now that his favorite, Hinrich is healthy.

Rasheed wallace= older josh smith shoots threes and jumpers, would have been a future hall of famer if he used his post moves he actually had in his arsenal unlike Josh and he is old and we have to many head bands as it is already on the team !!!!

Imagine that. K-Mart signed with somebody else, just like how Pryzbilla is going to sign with somebody else. The question is…What will Sund do now?

I’ve said it all along. After Al went down, Hawks should have brought guys in for auditions (even if it’s the Dampier, Pryzbilla, Fesenko etc). Those guys are not world beaters by any means, and maybe they are not in great shape. But Al went down 3 weeks ago. That was enough time to be proactive and get a big in here, just in case.

Insetad, Hawks do what they do. Drag their feet, and now they are forced (imo) to make a some quick decisions (which is not Rick’s strong suit). And (imo), if the Hawks did bring somebody in for a workout, I think we would have heard about it.

With Twin’s injury, and LD’s 2 foul rule, look for Zaza to not be so rough in the paint.

That sucks…I would have liked to have had Martin. I think he would have helped. What stiffs are still available? I can’t even remember……might be better off holding tryouts from the blog posters. I can’t imagine any center still on the market is worth spending any money on.

Holywould, deal. If 76′ers win on Saturday, I will come on here (Michael’s postgame blog) and declare you the greatest basketball mind of all time. If Hawks win, you don’t have to do the same to me….no one would believe you.

And, Holywould, I give the Hawks a pass on last night because I could see they were tired. They just were. I know all the teams play tough stretches, but you never know when the legs are going to fail. Sometimes it just does not make sense…..George Karl, when he coached the Sonics, said that he gives his team 6 to 7 games a season. Meaning, there will be 6-7 games that they are just too gassed to produce. I think the Hawks spent one of their 6-7 last night.

They will play much better on Saturday.

I want a big who can defend in space and compete in consecutive nights. It is doubtful that K-Mart was plan A-Z. Sund will do something, the question is about timing (IMO) and the fitness of the available candidates. Considering the number of teams that were recruiting K-Mart, one could make an assumption that similar love could have been shown to all of those guys who have been available the past few months (but something MUST be wrong with those guys).

Last year John Hollinger said two NBA execs told him Josh Powell was the worst player in the NBA. LD wanted to move the worst player in the NBA ahead of Zaza in the rotation. This year candidates for worst player in the NBA include Bibby, whom LD would still be starting if he had a choice, and Collins, who is without question the most slow-footed player in the league.

This team was able to withstand the loss of a third-team All-NBA center and still start the season at a pace for a franchise-record win percentage. But oh my God… let JASON COLLINS go down and LD hits the panic button. Can anybody explain to me why Zaza only played 21 minutes on a night when the Hawks got destroyed with layups?

Collins entered the game with 3:28 to play in the first quarter after Zaza picked up his second foul. He then sat on the bench the entire second quarter. With 4:42 to play in the half, LD took out third-string center Ivan Johnson, subbed in Radmanovic and played Josh Smith at center as Memphis closed on a 17-8 run to lead 52-43 at halftime. Rad was horrible in this game. See the highlights on NBA.com and watch his attempt at defense on one of Rudy Gay’s dunks… it’s Jamal Crawfordesque.

This was one of the worst coaching performances I have ever witnessed, and LD has already had some clunkers. Did the players quit? Maybe they did, but there’s no question in my mind that LD quit. Hollinger said that Collins will be out for a while with an elbow injury, which saves LD from himself once again. He won’t have the slowest player in the NBA to play 20 minutes a night at center. I guess he’ll give those minutes to Vlad now.

Hawks had their chances at beginning of season to get a free agent center. You could easily see this was going to be a problem sometime during the season.

“I don’t think Martin is in China. Pretty sure I saw him yesterday before the game.”

Some national NBA writer tweeted the same thing last night. K-Mart was in the building watching the Hawks getting destroyed. Maybe LD went small in the 2nd quarter on purpose to convince K-Mart that he’d have minutes in the rotation.

At this point I wouldn’t even mind signing Benson. The Hawks need someone who can rebound off the bench and who won’t get dominated by opposing centers. Benson lacks the bulk to maintain post position but at least he’ll grab boards and protect the rim.

“But Al went down 3 weeks ago. That was enough time to be proactive and get a big in here, just in case.”

But, O’B, that assumes ANY bit of being proactive. This is the ASKG. They are ONLY reactive, and usually a year late (or more) at that. If Sund is here next year (please God, no) THEN you’ll see the Hawks stock up on useless centers.

Meanwhile the pleas of his top 3 players are ignored, and we are in a rebounding pinch.

Wow Slimjr, you are very negative lately but I have to agreed about this. The only thing that Atlanta needs was a Center and Point Guard, now that we have a PG, only thing we need now is a Center, now we have to get 2 now and Philly and other teams will use that against the Hawks and punish them on the boards. I dont care if it is Benson, D12, or any 7′0 players that wants to play, we need a center.

if hawks worrie about costs why not sign benson 2 a few 10 day contracts at least he can block some shots.

ugghhh, why does it have to get to a certain point before we take action? why dont we take preemptavie measures to ensure these circumstances dont come up? why did we keep donald sloan instead of keith benson? bigs are not a luxury in the nba, they get hurt more often and keeping quality bigs is important in a big mans game. if we dont get keith benson id like to get kyle kresenko? the ex utah jazz bigman. we are not miami and cant play with a 6′9 C and be effective. vlade rad is only eficient for short spurts if teague is penetrating well and if not he is a liability. ivan has great energy and loves sliding under guys for the charge but hes not a surprise anymore and teams know he is gona drive hard and are waiting for it now.
TOPIC 2
how do u al horford fans feel now knowing we are the exact same team without al? he gets #s just cuz he starts period. he needs to be traded next year and id like to get a SG or SF scorer type and slide Joe to 3. we need a scorer to help joe, someone who is a driver and can shoot. marvin off the bench would be great for us cuz i have this strange feeling he will be a lifetime hawk.
anyway i know we’ll get to the second round and lose in 4 or 5 and this will keep repeating until we get a superstar that can get us past chi or mia

“how do u al horford fans feel now knowing we are the exact same team without al?”

Let’s win a few more against +.500 teams before we say that we are “the exact same” without Al. We were 2-3 with Horford against +.500 teams, and we are 1-3 without him. Let’s see how this month plays out, and then decide how much he’s missed.

And if we don’t miss him at all, then why on earth is every other post saying we need a big body?

Look, I’m delighted that they have a 8-3 record without Horford. I’m a Hawks fan above all. But to say that we don’t miss Horford’s rebounding, is just hatin’. Or maybe you think we are fine without adding another big body?
