Hawks meet with rep for Kenyon Martin

The Hawks met Thursday with a representative for center Kenyon Martin, according to a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking.

Martin, 34, averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 48 games for the Nuggets last season. The 11-year veteran signed a one-year deal to play in China with Xinjiang during the NBA lockout last summer. He is eligible to return to the NBA following the Chinese season in several weeks.

Martin has reportedly been offered a contract by the Heat. ESPN recently reported that he is also interested in signing with the Clippers,  Spurs and Knicks, along with the Hawks and Heat.

Martin could make a decision by the end of the week. According to reports FIBA has cleared Martin, allowing him to sign with an NBA team.

The Hawks have used a combination of Zaza Pachulia, Jason Collins and Ivan Johnson at center since the loss of Al Horford last month to a torn pectoral muscle. While the Hawks are 9-2 in the 11 games without Horford, teams with dominant big men can present problems. Martin (6-foot-9, 240) could help in that regard.

The Hawks could probably only offer Martin the veteran minimum in salary. They do offer a team that has made the playoffs the past four seasons, including three straight trips to the Eastern Conference semifinals. They are currently tied for third in the conference behind the Bulls and Sixers.

hey bruh…Josh Smith has always been better than Al Horford but Josh always gets the snub on the All Star vote.

Al Horford is a good player but what he does is replaceable. That’s why you see the Hawks able to insert Zaza into the starting lineup and keep on rolling. Only fantasy land and NBA2K12 wanna be managers want to trade him though. That’s just dumb

Boy, I must have really gotten the troll’s goat for him to try and steal my handle in a vain attempt to draw attention away from this:

The troll posts over and over about how awful Horford is, and yet tries to use Einstein’s quote about insanity never realizing that it fits his three year rampage to a T. Where is Department of Unintended Irony when you need him?

No one here is disagreeing that Al held us back some. But even Al had the right idea. The Hawks still need a center. And here you are still b!tch!n about someone who’s not playing this year.

But tell me what your 3 years of railing against Horford has changed? Nada.

So do you fit the Einstein quote?

Little Crimson 75

If you trade Al for Kmart you still have a power forward playing center. unless we get one of the 7 – 10 centers who are better than Al, then we should keep our non defensive power forward rather than trade for yours.

I can assure you I am not grandad, I’ve disagreed with the guy more than a few times… I’m just a poster with common sense. You’re not going to get (save a few) anyone in here better than Horford unless you blow everything up on a 16-6 team that can legitimately win an wide-open East this year.

All those centers mentioned… stats don’t tell everything. The offenses run in those teams go more through them than the offense does Al Horford in Atlanta. With Teague in there now, Horford is the fourth option offensively… right in front of Marvin, the 5th option. The guy just isn’t going to score 20+ points a game unless he’s in the zone or has a favorable matchup that night. The shots just aren’t there. Horford plays tough and does his job better than most, not all, but most.

I really can’t say that Horford is a problem in Atlanta… Dwight Howard would be nice, but it’s just not reality.

The Monger

The idiocracy in here surrounding what consitutes a “big” man in the NBA is mindboggling. The stupid comments come in packs. As stated before there are VERY FEW legit 7 footers who can even contribute at all to an NBA team. I can think of only a few decent 7 footers in this league who can score, rebound, and arent injury prone. You guys on here would not want a 6′9 240 lb. dominant power forward who has been in the NBA for 11 years and is known for his aggressive, banging, hardnosed style because he is ONLY 6 foot 9??? Are you serious?? Like those 2 inches make that much of a difference?? You guys would rather have a 6′11 dude with a 10 inch vertical rather than the 6′9 guy with a 39 inch vertical? Its funny to hear comments like ‘we dont need Martin we need a “BIG”, a real banger and basher”… That is EXACTLY what Martin is..The hawks need rebounders, bangers, and shot blockers and Martin is ALL of that. He has a career rebounding average of 7.2 per game, including years of 10.0, 9.5, and 9.4 rebounds a game. (at 6′9). He has a career shot block average of 1.2 per game (at 6′9). Also as a bonus he has a career scoring average of 13.5 (at 6′9). AND YOU GUYS DONT WANT THIS GUY BECAUSE HE IS 6′9 and not 6′11??? REALLY???

The Monger

February 2nd, 2012
9:41 pm

By the way Al Horford is listed at 6′10 and Kenyon Martin at 6′9. Is this what you fools are really arguing about?? One inch?? Really?? Nevermind the fact that Kenyon Martin has a higher vertical, is much more tenacious around the rim, is a more aggressive defender, and has a fire and passion for the game that is on par with the elites of the league. But hey he is 6′9 right, so lets pass on him..yeah right fools…
