Drew: Teague a ‘day-to-day decision’

NEW ORLEANS – C-Viv in the Big Easy filling in for MC.

Here are a couple of notes from today’s practice in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Hornets:

* Coach Larry Drew said starting point guard Jeff Teague is day-to-day with an ankle sprain suffered in Friday’s OT win in Detroit. Teague participated in practice Saturday. “He was out here getting some shots up,” Drew said. “He’s moving around on it pretty good. They are still treating it. It will be a day-to-day decision.”

*Drew played Kirk Hinrich, in his second game since returning from shoulder surgery, with 3:48 left in the third until the end of the game. Hinrich told MC that he was “gassed” following the effort. Drew said he was ready to play Jannero Pargo but that he decided to utilize his timeouts to rest Hinrich.  “I was prepared to play Pargo after Jeff gave me the nod that he couldn’t go again,” Drew said. “He came back after they taped him and said that it started to stiffen up a little bit. I threw Kirk in there. I saw he was getting a little winded so I was prepared to throw Pargo in there but I made the decision to use my timeouts where [Hinrich] could get some rest. I kept asking him every timeout, ‘How you feeling, how you feeling?’ He said ‘I’m OK.’”

*The Hawks have gotten off to slow starts the last several games. The travel could be an issue. The Hawks didn’t arrive in New Orleans until 4 a.m. Saturday. They had early-morning arrivals in San Antonio and Detroit. Drew is also concerned that his team doesn’t take an opponent lightly, as they may have in Detroit and can’t afford to do against New Orleans. “When we go back and look at game tape, we see obviously when you are not making shots that gets you off to a little bit of a slow start,” Drew said. “Sometimes you don’t look at an opponent how we would like at a Chicago versus how we look at a team like Detroit that has obviously struggled. Sometimes that factors into it. As a team we are going to have to figure it out, particularly our starters, when we get off to slow starts it takes a little bit of a wake-up call to get us going. Sometimes it’s going to be a situation where it’s going to be too late. We want to be a team that comes out and plays hard start to finish, whether it’s the first quarter or the third quarter. We’ve done that, but we haven’t done it on a consistent basis.”

* Drew rested Joe Johnson and Josh Smith from practice Saturday, calling each “a little tired and a little banged up.”

* Expect the same starting lineup (not including the question about Teague) Sunday against the Hornets with Zaza Pachulia starting at center. Drew said he expected to make in-game adjustments but that the starters would remain the same.

* Drew said he expects a hard-fought game from New Orleans, coming off Friday’s win over Orlando. “To me, it’s going to be a very similar game to the one we just played in Detroit,” Drew said. “It’s going to be a very hard-fought game. It’s a team playing with a sense of desperation. They had lost nine in a row prior to winning [Friday] night against Orlando, which they did very convincingly. It’s another team where we absolutely, positively can’t look at their record and say this is going to be a wash. That team, going back and looking at their last seven or eight ball games, they have been in every ball game to the end. They lost games at the end. It’s going to be a dogfight and we have to be prepared for that.”

* The Hawks will not hold a morning shoot-around Sunday prior to the Hornets game. Instead they will do a walk-through at the team hotel.

* There you go folks. I’m going to write a story for the Sunday paper before I make my first venture into New Orleans. If you’ve got suggestions please feel free to share.

Another gut check win by the HAWKS last night. Clearly they’re weaker inside because of the loss of Al, but they’re still working hard. Odd stat from last night, the HAWKS out rebounded the Pistons 49 to 44. The Pistons had more offensive rebounds 12 to 9, but it felt like the Pistons were really killing us on the boards. We’re definitely missing some length and athletic ability down low, but if Collins can just rebound/box-out a little better we might be OK. Hinich looked good once he got going, his physical style of defensive will be very helpful as the season goes on. Hopefully Jeff didn’t re-aggravate his ankle from earlier this season. We need Jeff to improve his drive and dish moves, but we can’t live without his drive and finish.

GO HAWKS!!

The Hornets are going to be tough tomorrow night, but it looks like they get a lot of their offensive from Jack. I think we’ll need to play hard defensive on him and exploit JJ against Belinelli. Josh has a speed advantage against Jason Smith, but as I remember Jason has given the HAWKS problems because of his size. We’ll need solid defensive from our bench, which should also have some advantages on the offensive end with the height of Tracy and Vlad.

GO HAWKS!!

Many times TO’s are credited to the pass receiver.
Perhaps that is what occurred.
I have noted on many occasions whenTO’s are wrongfully credited.
Josh also was guilty of an offensive foul;
obviously the NBA does not count that as a turnover either.

Nonetheless, you must endorse the idea of him [Josh] being
the primary ballhandler.
Oh well.
Last year, I did not mind when Josh and Al took off with the ball
due to Bibby’s nonchalance bringing the ball down the court.
this year we have a true pg x 2 [Teaguer & Kirk].

Even though Josh has been hitting his shots much better than he has in past seasons, everyone knows he’s still a very streaky shooter. As a result, they continue to let him have wide open jumpers like they have his entire season, and no NBA team fears him driving to the bucket. Teams would rather see the ball in Josh’s hands than Teagues, becauseTeague is a better 3pt shooter, more consistent shooter overall, and a far better penetrator.

Teams fear Josh on DEF, not on OFF. One of the reasons Josh isn’t in the low post as much as some would like is because he’s more effective as a passer and facilitator from the high post.

Josh Smith’s stats deceiving:

Josh – last eve:
6 of 16 from the floor in an OT game
* note – the only player on the Hawks who should have that high volume
shot attempts wit that low shooting % is Joe.

** Josh missed 11 outside shots vs DET. / an oddity since he was 6 for 16.

Now;
Marv was 6 for 9 FG% & had 22 pts in only 35 min / 9 min less than Josh.
Marv also had 8 rebs in 9 less min.

Zaza had 16 pts on 8 for 12 FG% also in 35 min / 9 min less than Josh.

Marv & Zaza missed only 7 shots between them
Also they combined for 17 rebs.
____________________________________________

Am I saying; due to the stats of one game, Marv or Zaza
either or is better than Josh ? Yes, maybe, perhaps.

Are they better players, unconditionally ? No
____________________________________________

However;
one can begin to look at trends.
____________________________________________

I tend to watch the game.
I was absolutely surprised when I discovered Josh had filled up
the stat sheet vs DET.
I thought he played horrible.
I think he has been playing very badly of late.
why ?
Because he’s Josh Smith !

I hate to disagree with one thing you said.

” Teams fear Josh defensively ”

Not so much anymore.

I think they scheme around him now.

He gambles, takes himself out of the play while looking for steals.
Often if not always takes his eyes off the ball in help position.
Bitches at teammates for mistakes.
Pisses off the officials.
Looks for the grandstand block / but not a good on ball defender [inside].
He’s too little and only blocks shots from the weak-side;
and then only when he sees the ball.
____________________________________________

One would think I do not like Josh;
not the case but it’s getting that way.

Sorry;
my comp ate my Enes Kanter post.

Kanter is from Turkey:
He’s having a bad rookie yr.
He’s undersized – roughly the same as Al.
He had been advertized as a 7 ftr.
[realistically 6-10 thereabouts]

I know I’ve been hard on Josh tonight but:
I’m glad we did not trade Josh for the draft rights to pick him.
And – I would not trade Josh for Melo either.
I would only trade Josh for a Legit Big … (7 ftr) … with presence.

Kanter:
Best case scenario – Al Horford
Worst Case;
a weird mix of – Brian Scalabrine / John Brockman / & Luke Harangody

“SATURDAY, Jan. 28 (HealthDay News) — National Basketball Association players who have a tendency to hesitate too long before making shots may be missing scoring opportunities, according to a new mathematical model created by experts from the University of Minnesota.

The findings were published online this week in PLoS ONE.

“Strategic decisions in basketball have long been made based on the intuition of the coach or players, but as advanced quantitative analyses are increasingly applied to the game it is becoming clear that many of the conventional, intuitive ideas for basketball strategy are misguided or suboptimal,” study author Brian Skinner, of the University of Minnesota, said in a journal news release.

According to the model, when there’s lots of time left on the shot clock, “only higher quality shots should be taken,” Skinner said. “This cutoff for shot quality decreases as the time remaining decreases.”

But players shouldn’t take this too far and be too hesitant to shoot early in a possession. If they do, the model revealed, they could be missing chances to score.

The authors pointed out that their model is limited since it assumes that opportunities to score occur at random.”

“The authors pointed out that their model is limited since it assumes that opportunities to score occur at random.”

…which is why this study is BS. Opportunities to score don’t occur at random. Fast breaks lead to shots earlier in the shot clock, which are going to be converted at a higher rate. Bad possessions lead to desperation heaves — or Josh Smith jumpers — at the end of the clock, which are going to be converted at a lower rate. Teams don’t score better because they shoot earlier; they shoot earlier because they create better scoring opportunities. They have causation backwards.

Shot almost 58 percent from 3pt land in college! Has handles. Can crossover and drive to the rack..

Don’t need Kaman, Okafor, Biedrins, we don’t need any starting Center for a team currently, muchh too pricy for what we need.

We need a cheap big who can preferably start at C to move Zaza back to coming off the bench. A C who plays with energy is long and can finish plays made for him at the rim. With all that said, Semih Erden can be here by Monday and be playing against the Raptors on Tuesday for a 2nd round pick. Cheap, affordable, and effective.

Someone else mentioned it ealier, but Keith Benson played his second d-league game last night and recorded 24 points on 12 of 16 shooting, grabbed 7 rebounds (4 offensive), and had 5 personal fouls & 5 turnovers, all in 34 minutes. In his first game, he also had 4 personal fouls in 15 minutes.

D-league is the perfect place for Benson right now, but hopefully he improves, adds some muscle, and we can give him another shot one day soon.

I still like Jordan Hill from the Rockets as a low-cost big man. Houston is trying to clear cap space for this summer, and has already turned down his option for next year (along with Thabeet, Johnny Flynn & Terrence Williams).

Back-to-back double-doubles for Hill after posting 14 points & 11 rebounds against the Knicks last night in 22 minutes. His double-double against Washington the night before, came in just 19 minutes of play.

Of course, against our Hawks in December, Hill had 11 points & 15 rebounds in 28 minutes. But then again, don’t all oposing big men have huge games against us?

Hill makes $2.8M this year.

From the top three picks this past draft, only one has shined so far. An 18 year old who only played what, 11 games in college? and, he is a small PG. this just magnifies how many teams make poor choices in that top three spot.

I will not even go there about, Marvin and Oden. I believe with any team fortunate enough to be in that spot, should either trade that pick for a proven veteran of dire need on your team. Or, make that pick a positon of dire need and not, be choosing Marvin when you already have 15 PF’s, and 5 lottery choices at a franchise and true PG like,(CP3) and squander it.

Just DUMB owners and GM. They are the single reasons we can’t move forward. I can’t really blame the players for this, especially not Mr. Johnson.

I was the one talking about Benson looking good in the D League. It was actually his second game, he played the night before against the same team. His first game he played off the bench and didn’t look so good but I found it interesting the next game he was the starting center and put up those numbers. Shows that he does better once he learns the plays and gets a feel. I still wish we keep him for a project, we should have keep him over Sloan. It is easy to find a replacement at PG but hard to find a good center to work with.

Do the hawks still have any inherent rights over Kito Benson, or is he free to roam the universe? This org for some reason, does not have a history of developing projects they draft. Of, cousre Josh was raw with tremendous potential and was a starter from day one on a depleted roster.

Benson isn’t a C in the NBA… he might be one in the D- league. His defense and offense are light years away from being decent. If you watched the few pre-season games we played he sucked. Teams like the Hawks don’t have time to develop such a raw talent. It would take way too long and there are many better alternatives available in free agency every year.

Why do Al horford supporters, like Grandad, attack Smoove in defense of Al Horford?

It makes no since. Josh is putting up All Star numbers. Takes the double/triple teams off JJ, Is a legitimate # 2 scoring option. Is scoring inside and outside, has high assists, shooting Pct, and is an excellent defender. He is amongst the very best in the NBA at his position. Both He and Drew have an excellent bond and the team chemistry is just fine since Al is no longer on the team.

So WHY do the Al Supporter waste time with lunacy? Total Lies? Has their obsession for Al horford resorted to this? What type of SICK ideology is this? Attacking Josh will not validate Al nor lift him from his demise.

“Josh does not move in the motion offense;” – idiot.

You dont put up the kind of Assists Josh puts up standing still. Further Josh is a combination of inside and outside.

“Really, seriously, people … watch Josh play the whole game.Watch how he is slow to get back on def while he jaws with officials.” – Idiot

Who cares? Michael Jordan Lebron, and Kobe All Question the refs. Who really cares?Just win baby. If you shoot near 50%, have high assist numbers and high rebounds and blocks who really GAF whether you argue or lobby the refs? Hater.

“Frustrating isn’t he” Idiot’s self analysis

“Why does Josh ‘`not`’ run the pick & roll” – school of the unlearned

The Pick and roll is use by coaches to free up players who cant create their own shot.(like Al) or cant take a man off the dribble. The coaches call for the pick and roll in half courts sets to help limited offenses. Josh creates his own shots and doesn’t need to rely on the pick and roll, (not so with Al who cant create), and Josh can take you off the dribble. So there is little need for Drew to call the pick and roll when you are running the offense through JJ and Josh. This team is designed and implemented based on the level of talent available. Drew is calling the shots and JJ and Josh are making it happen. Hater.

Dude really? is that the best you ve got? Al is still going to be traded and Josh, JJ and the Hawks are having a fabulous year with out your boy. This is JJ/Josh’s team. They are leading it and they are winning. They are fun to watch and are beating the teams they are suppose too. Team moral couldn’t be higher. This unit plays together, everybody accepts their role and the Hawks are getting it done. The player know and accept their roles( unlike Al) stay in their lanes and play their positions. I guess you are playing yours….Hater.

So sit back and burst open another tall can of hater aid and enjoy the show!!

skyhawk1,

Benson is not a center in the NBA *yet*

He looks good in the post but he gets out muscled, that is the one thing the Hawks needed to work on with him, which can easily been done with a trainer and the weight room. That is the reason he didn’t look good in the preseason. I just don’t understand it when they say Benson will be a project for them but they cut him because he wasn’t ready to play in the NBA. If they keep him and worked with him for a year he would have been, at least, a good backup on a rookie contract.

Just tell me, what was the point in keeping Sloan on the inactive roster over Benson? Yes, they probably thought Teague would get hurt again but guess what… Horford got hurt and really nothing to back him up off the inactive roster. Remember last season we had all those backup centers on the roster, interest to think “We are good with Horford, Zaza, Collins”.

Lack of ball movement and extremely poor guard play.

Defensively, they’re fine. 10th in the league in defensive rating.
Offensively, they’re a mess. 25th in the league in offensive rating.

Melo leads that team in assists . . . (( rewind )) . . Melo leads that team in assists.

That tells you how bad their guards are. Iman Shumpert and Toney Douglas have to be the worst combination of guards in the league. And that idiot coach D’Antoni gives them the green light to keep shooting. Neither of those guys are even better than Salim Stoudamire back in 2006.

Imagine if Royal Ivey, Salim Stoudamire and Mario West were given major minutes to play guard for the Hawks. That’s what they have in NY right now.

When Baron Davis takes control of the team, they’ll have a legit PG on the team that can rack up assists and shoot the ball from the outside a little better.

But I truly believe that the team won’t get better until they fire D’Antoni. Woody wouldn’t let Shumpert and Douglas get away with jacking all of those jumpshots.

A – Don’t want Kenyon Martin, guy is old, a headcase, and too small at center, which means Hawks will still be a small undersized team up front so why bother??

B – Heard Kaman may get bought out, so if he wants to play for the Hawks then it will be his choice.

C – ASG, let SUND GET A BIG MAN!!! Stop handcuffing the guy.

Joe Mama,

Zaza has been looking more consistent out there and has been doing a somewhat good job, but he has his clumsy moments alot. We really need a Center to at least come in behind Zaza so Collins is not out there long.

My question is why don’t they bring in someone to like a 10 day contract, like the did with Wilkins when JJ got hurt? That is what has me confused, we lose All Star JJ and get a short replacement, but we lose All Star AL and get no replacement at all.

I became interested in Kaman after reading all of the requests for him, and I was surprised at what I found out. Aside for his injury issues, he hasn’t been all that productive. I compared his production with Horford’s, and after I found the surprising results, I added MWilliams, and here’s what I found. Kaman(Horford)(MWilliams).

PPG-9.2(12.4)(10.4), RPG-6.6(7)(6.1), APG-1.4(2.2)(1.2), SPG-.47(.91)(.59), BPG-1.24(1.27)(.74), TOPG-2.4(1.5)(.8).

Why would anyone suggest we pay $14M for a 7′ 265lb center who’s slower, not as quick or athletic, and can’t out produce Horford, who HORFORD HATERS desperately want us to get rid of. Based on his stats, compared to Horford’s, all we’d end up getting out of the deal is less speed, quickness, and athleticism, as well as 2 extra inches and an extra 10lbs. He has barely out produced MWilliams, the same Marvin Williams many want to see given away.

He’d only have value to us if we were able to add him without having to give up any of our top 8-9 players(starting 5 plus Hinrich, Zaza, TMac, and maybe Johnson).

Estamos felices.

Benson is UFA free to sign with any team. He should take Stack’s spot because we don’t need a wing on the end of our bench and Keto would block more shots and get more rebounds than Collins.

DrMaryB…
The 2nd round pick the Hawks got from the nets a couple seasons ago was sold to OKC and used to draft Tibor Pleiss(sp). Not T. Splitter.
